Here’s an interesting phrase that can be used to  show the popularity of a certain person or thing.

다음은 특정 사람이나 사물의 인기를 표시하는 데 사용할 수 있는 흥미로운 문구입니다.

To be popular during the current period can be  described as being ‘the flavour of the month’.

요즘 유행하는 것은 '이달의 맛'이라고 할 수 있습니다.

To be the flavour of the month  means that something is popular.

이달의 맛이 된다는 것은 어떤 것이 인기가 있다는 것을 의미합니다.

A certain person or perhaps a trend that  is currently seen as fashionable or popular

특정 인물 또는 현재 유행하거나 인기 있는 트렌드를

can be described as ‘the flavour of the month’.

'이달의 맛'이라고 할 수 있습니다.

A pop star or an actor might come from nowhere  and be lauded with praise and positive reviews.

팝스타나 배우가 아무데서나 찾아와 칭찬과 긍정적인 평가를 받을 수 있습니다.

That person is the flavour of the month.

그 사람이 이달의 맛이다.

A certain style of dress or accessory  that suddenly becomes the ‘must have’ item

갑자기 '머스트 해브' 아이템이 된 특정 스타일의 드레스나 액세서리는

will most likely be described as  being the flavour of the month.

이달의 취향이라고 할 가능성이 큽니다.

“Open shoulders on ladies dresses and tops are the  flavour of the month at this year’s fashion show.”

"여성용 드레스와 상의의 오픈 숄더는 올해 패션쇼에서 이달의 풍미입니다."

A certain genre of movie or book  might become the flavour of the month.

특정 장르의 영화나 책이 이 달의 맛이 될 수 있습니다.

That particular type of story has become  popular amongst moviegoers and reader.

이러한 특정 유형의 이야기는 영화 관람객과 독자 사이에서 인기 있게 되었습니다.

“Right now superhero movies are the  flavour of the month for moviegoers.”

"현재 슈퍼히어로 영화는 영화 관람객을 위한 이달의 맛입니다."

“Historical tales of colonial Britain have  become the flavour of the month for readers.”

"식민지 영국의 역사 이야기는 독자들에게 이달의 맛이 되었습니다."

Of course it is possible to stop being  fashionable and lose that popularity.

물론 유행을 그만두고 그 인기를 잃을 수도 있습니다.

The thing in question was  the flavour of the month,

문제는

until something new came along to take its place.

새로운 것이 그 자리를 차지할 때까지 이달의 맛이었습니다.

It would be fair to say  that whatever the thing is…

be it in show business, fashion,  kid’s toys, or entertainment;

연예계, 패션, 아동용 장난감, 엔터테인먼트 등 무엇이든지…

it is not easy to become  the ‘flavour of the month’.

'이달의 맛'이 되기란 쉽지 않습니다.

And when it does happen, quite  often, it does not last long.

그리고 그런 일이 발생해도 오래 지속되지 않는 경우가 많습니다.

It’s time to take a look at another buzzword.

또 다른 유행어를 살펴볼 때입니다.

A buzzword is a word or phrase that is popular  

유행어는

during a certain period or is  generally popular in everyday use.

특정 기간 동안 유행했거나 일상 생활에서 일반적으로 유행했던 단어나 문구입니다.

Today’s buzzword is…

오늘의 유행어는...

‘deepfake’.

'딥페이크'입니다.

The word ‘deepfake’ is a noun that names  a video that has been manipulated somehow

'딥페이크'라는 단어는

to create a false news story or  to spread untrue information.

허위 뉴스를 만들거나 사실이 아닌 정보를 퍼뜨리기 위해 어떻게든 조작된 동영상을 지칭하는 명사입니다.

This normally involves using a computer  generated representation of a well-known person,

여기에는 일반적으로 다른 사람의 신체에 겹쳐지거나 병합된 잘 알려진 사람의 컴퓨터 생성 표현을 사용하는 것이 포함됩니다

which has been superimposed or merged  onto the body of another person.

.

The movement of their mouth might be altered  or their body might have been altered somehow.

Oh my, what has happened to master Duncan?

That was not a good example of a deepfake,

but you get the general idea.

Here are two words that appear similar,

비슷해 보이지만

but in fact have very different meanings.

실제로는 매우 다른 의미를 지닌 두 단어가 있습니다.

The words are ‘elude’ and ‘allude’.

단어는 '피하다'와 '암시하다'입니다.

First of all, the word ‘elude’  means to avoid or escape capture.

우선 '피하다'라는 단어는 포획을 피하거나 탈출하는 것을 의미합니다.

To hide away or move to another place  so as to avoid being caught is ‘elude’.

들키지 않기 위해 숨거나 다른 곳으로 이동하는 것은 '피하다'입니다.

To avoid capture by using clever  or cunning methods is to ‘elude’.

영리하거나 교활한 방법을 사용하여 캡처를 피하는 것은 '피하는 것'입니다.

“The escaped prisoner has  so far eluded the police.”

"탈출한 죄수는 지금까지 경찰을 피해 다녔습니다."

“The man managed to elude the police  for a week before he was captured.”

"그 남자는 체포되기 전 일주일 동안 경찰을 피해 간신히 도망쳤습니다."

Something that cannot be remembered  or understood might elude you.

기억할 수 없거나 이해할 수 없는 것이 빠져나갈 수 있습니다.

It cannot be remembered or comprehended.

기억하거나 이해할 수 없습니다.

“The subject of Quantum  Physics eludes most people.”

"양자 물리학의 주제는 대부분의 사람들을 피합니다."

To fail in achieving  something that has been sought  

찾거나

or worked for might be expressed as ‘elude’.

노력한 것을 달성하지 못하는 것은 '피하다'로 표현될 수 있습니다.

You almost reached your goal  but in the end it eluded you.

목표에 거의 도달했지만 결국에는 목표를 달성하지 못했습니다.

“Sadly for the British swimming team,  that sought after gold medal eluded them.”

Then there is the word ‘allude’

which means to indirectly mention or hint  at something, without saying it directly.

It is alluded to, but not said explicitly.

This word is not used with an object,

but instead is used to make a  suggestion without being too direct.

You might allude to the guilt of  a person in a crime investigation.

유죄를 암시할 수 있습니다 .

“You asked me where I was last Friday  night, what are you alluding to?”

“지난 금요일 밤에 어디 있었냐고 물으셨는데 , 무슨 말씀이세요?”

“You often allude to me having an affair,  but I can assure you it is not true.”

To allude is to hint,  suggest, imply, mention, cite.

You might make an allusion to something.

You don’t say it directly.

We can also say ‘two peas in a pod’.

Also, things that match or  complement each other well;

go together like ‘a pair of socks’.

Although quite often I’ve noticed  that my socks do not go together well.

They are often odd.

They are different from each other.

Two things that do not go together  well might be described as being like

Then there is ‘key cutter’ which  is a machine for making a door key.
