I did mention the weather a few moments ago just to show you how bad things are.

This is quite a contrast.

In fact, from last week

we were suffering with one of the worst heatwaves ever

here in England.

Today, it is gloomy.

It's been raining all day.

You can see it's rather gloomy outside.

Lots of low cloud, rain, damp.

And it isn't even warm.

It is only 16 Celsius, which,

I have to be honest, does feel very nice,

especially at night.

I have to be honest with you.

I have been very pleased that the nights have become much cooler.

So I'm lying in bed, feeling much more comfortable

at the moment because it is much cooler at night.

But we also have low temperatures during the day.

So this does not really feel like August.

I will be honest with you.

However, it is much cooler than it was last week, for which

I am very grateful indeed.

Of course we have the live chat here, so it would not be a live stream

without you joining in on the live chat.

it was absolutely terrifying and there was a thunderstorm that battered Paris.

So I have a feeling maybe the weather there has been worse than here.

We've had lots of rain, but we certainly haven't had thunderstorms

or anything really serious like that.

But it would appear, yes, one could hardly see anything yesterday,

the pouring rain and the strong gusts of wind.

The streets became rivers.

I did see a little bit of this yesterday.

A lot, a lot.

Many parts of Europe have now had lots of rain.

So after the dry weather

and as you know, we've had a lot of dry weather across Europe.

Now we are getting lots of rain.

So I would imagine in a few weeks from now, people will be complaining

that there is too much water around and that is the problem.

Another problem, of course, is when the ground becomes dry,

the water does not soak into the ground.

It just runs away. It just runs off.

It will not soak in, especially if the ground is baked solid.

So if you have many days of extreme heat,

you will find that the ground becomes so hard

that the water will not soak into the earth.

It just runs away, which can of course cause lots of problems.

You can have flooding and all sorts of horrible things happening there.

It's changed so dramatically.

We had so much sunshine last week and then this week.

Rain last night.

It rained all night.

Very strange. I'm not used to it.

a husband and wife celebrating their wedding day in the park.

And there are many people every year

who are unfortunate enough to be struck by lightning.

And as the story that Palmira told us about, well, it can be fatal.

Not a very nice experience.

There are many people who have been struck by lightning

and they have lived to tell the tale.

They have lived to tell their story.

But unfortunately, in some cases, people are not so lucky.

I've never been struck by lightning, but I have seen

lightning striking the ground very close to where I am.

And it's pretty frightening because all

you hear is a very loud bang

and it's the type of sound that you never forget.

It is quite intense, a very intense feeling.

And I always remember afterwards I could smell the electricity in the air.

It's very strange.

So if you you ever have a lightning strike,

you go very near to where you are.

You will also notice an interesting smell

in the air as well.

the fish is Hake.

I'm not even sure if I've ever tried Hake.

I've had many different types of fish.

Cod is the most common here.

A lot of people like cod. Cod.

Another one is haddock as well.

Haddock, another nice type of fish, often caught

and served fresh.

I'm not very keen on certain types of fish, small fish.

I don't really like very much anchovies.

As you may know, I don't like anchovies.

There is something really smelly and horrible about anchovies.

I don't like them at all, to be honest.

I was scratching my nose.

And the reason is, I think there is maybe a hair

growing inside my nose and I can feel it.

It's very annoying.

and you can feel it all the time?

It's really annoying, actually,

I always think that salmon is the king of all fish.

Well, it might be.

It might be one of those things, but it's probably the most popular fish.

If you go to a restaurant, you will often notice that salmon will be served on the menu.

Even though there are different types of salmon.

So you can have pink salmon, which is not so expensive,

and then you can have the freshly caught red

salmon, which is expensive.

It can be very expensive. But yes, I do like salmon,

especially when it's steamed slowly

and then maybe you have a little bit of fish sauce or hollandaise

sauce and some mashed potatoes on the side

and maybe some peas as well.

Oh, I feel so hungry.

All this talk of food is making me feel hungry.

and normal to find a fleet

of hake here in Buenos Aires.

I don't think I've ever tried that type of fish, to be honest.

I find fish sometimes difficult

to cook, especially when you have to prepare it.

So maybe if you buy some fresh fish

from the fish market and the fish

still looks like the fish from the sea,

it still has its eyes

and its mouth and its tail and all of its scales.

And you have to sometimes do all the horrible things

like cut off its head and its tail, and then you have to take the skin off

and then you have to cut it open and take all the things out from inside.

I don't like to do that if I was honest with you.

So do you buy your fish fresh?

When I say fresh, I mean

still in one piece with its head, because some people do cook

the fish with everything still attached.

Like in China, they used to serve fish to me in China.

And it had everything.

It had its head, its tail

and even its eye would stare at me

from the plates

and that would make me feel very uncomfortable,

to be honest.

Eskimos eat uncooked fish in order to take advantage

of all the nutrients, new treatments or nutrients.

Raw fish.

I've tried raw fish only once.

It was okay. I didn't mind.

It was actually raw salmon, which is something I've never tried before.

But I did try it.

I think it was whenever I was in Paris with Steve

It did smell a little bit fishy.

Which season in England is your most favourite of all?

Well, I have to say, I suppose it depends on what my mood is at the time.

If I'm feeling happy, I might think that summer is the best.

However, if I'm feeling cold and lonely, maybe I've had a bad day at work.

I might say winter because that would represent

the way I was feeling at the time.

However, I have to say

in first place,

two seasons, spring and autumn.

I love those seasons so much.

You might say that they are transformative

in the fact that they normally contain certain types of change.

For example, winter into summer,

we often define spring as being that period of time.

And of course, from summer into winter

we often say that autumn is that time of year,

but they are lovely seasons, lots of colour in both spring and autumn.

However, today I have to say

summer is my favourite

because I'm outside right now enjoying the summer weather.

It is a beautiful day here in England.

I'm out and about enjoying the nature and as you can see behind me,

some beautiful landscapes as well.

We are looking at idioms connected to the human body.

I'm sure you have talked about this before.

Yes, maybe I have.

But sometimes it is good to have a refresh.

It is good to look at things again.

Also, I have added some new ones as well.

There are a few.

There are some new idioms connected to the human body.

So we are going to do that over the next few minutes

to the end of today's live stream.

We are a little bit busy.

Let's just say I'm not going to say too much because I can't.

I've been sworn to secrecy.

I've had to sign one of those

non-disclosure documents.

That means I can't talk about the thing

that I want to tell you, but I can't.

So this weekend and also next week, a lot of things going on

not only in my life, but also in Steve's life as well.

Everything is

changing a little bit

over the next couple of weeks in many different ways.

I might tell you about it next week.

That's all I can say, unfortunately. So here we are.

We are talking about body idioms and expressions

that use parts of the body or parts of the human body.

There are many parts, some of them common, some of them that are visible.

There are, of course, some parts

of the human body that are not visible.

They are internal

inside, hidden away,

under flesh and bones.

So some of them are visible and some of them are not.

And these are all words and expressions, phrases,

if you will, if you want to use that phrase or word,

you can you can say, yes, these are all phrases

that are used in English, idioms

that are used very commonly in the English language.

So let's have the first one right now.

Here's the first one elbow.

Well, this is very easy to find.

You have well, if you are lucky enough to have two arms,

you will notice that you also have two elbows.

There are some phrases that we can use in English, including this one.

You give someone the elbow,

you give someone the elbow,

which means to push your way

or exclude a person from a group.

So if you give someone the elbow,

it means you are pushing them out of a group,

maybe something that they were involved with along with you.

But now you don't want them to be with you or

you don't want them to be involved anymore.

So you will give them the elbow, you will push them out.

You refuse to communicate with someone any more.

You give them the elbow, maybe a person, maybe a friend in your life who

you were in contact with, but then they do something or they did something to upset you,

and so you gave them the elbow.

Maybe you are in a relationship with someone

and you've been with them for a long time, but then suddenly they do something that upsets you.

They maybe they cheat on you with another person.

You give them the elbow, you push

or exclude a person from a group

or maybe a situation that is taking place.

You refuse to communicate with someone anymore.

You give them the elbow you like that to give someone the elbow.

And this one is very commonly used,

especially when we are talking in anger.

You give them the elbow.

I am not going to see my girlfriend anymore.

I'm going to give her the elbow

because she has been talking to other men.

In fact, I think she might have another boyfriend.

I am going to give her the elbow

many ways of using that particular part of the body.

You might elbow someone if you are trying to get their attention.

So there is another use as well.

If you elbow someone

it means you are trying to get their attention.

Now that is not figurative, that is actually literal.

So you will literally elbow someone,

you elbow them,

you are trying to get their attention.

Maybe you are sitting next to your husband or your wife at night

and she is or he is ignoring you.

So to get their attention, you

you elbow them

like that, you not not harshly.

You don't hit them with your elbow.

You don't do that.

Okay. Can I just say you don't do that.

You just give them a little tap with your elbow

because you are trying to get their attention.

So there is another one.

Here's our second

part of the body to hit me.

Okay.

There isn't much you can say to that. Lose your head.

A person might lose their head if they become uncontrollable in their mood or anger.

If they start becoming angry to become angry or uncontrollable

with rage, you are becoming

uncontrollable with rage.

To become angry with someone, it means you lose your head

if you lose control of your emotions.

For example, we can also say that you lose your head or you have lost your head.

You have lost your senses.

You are doing things that make no sense.

You have lost your head.

So when a person becomes angry, quite often they will lose

control of their emotions.

You lose your head, you have lost your head.

And this does happen quite a lot of times a person might lose their head.

We might describe a person who always loses their temper,

or they become angry very easily as a hothead.

We might also say hothead.

So a person who is a hothead is a person who has a fiery temper

or may be a fiery personality.

They are a hothead.

Here's another one. Oh, I like this one.

Maybe you have a secret.

Or maybe someone tells you a secret

and they want you to keep that secret safe.

They don't want you to tell anyone else what that secret is.

They might say, Can you please keep a secret?

And then they tell you what the secret is,

and they need you

to reassure them that you will not tell.

Else you might say, Don't worry, your secret is safe with me.

My lips

are sealed.

I will not tell your secret to anyone.

So this is said when you want to let a person know

that you will keep something secret,

you won't tell other people what that secret is.

Your lips are sealed.

The secret will remain safe and hidden.

You can trust me.

My lips are sealed.

Talking of your mouth, there is another phrase that we often use

when we find it difficult to remember a person's name or certain word.

We will say that something is on the tip of our tongue.

Something that is on the tip of your tongue is a word or a name

that you can't quite remember,

but you are sure that you know what it is.

But at the moment you can't remember what it actually is.

It is on the tip of your tongue.

So there is another one connected with the mouth.

Now we are going to move a little lower

down the body.

Are you ready?

Okay.

Not too low down

to get something off your chest.

To get it off your chest.

It is something that we often do when we want to tell someone.

Something may be a secret or maybe something that we've really been

wanting to tell another person.

Maybe something that will be a surprise.

You want to get it off your chest?

Maybe there is something that has been causing you worry.

Maybe you are feeling anxious about something.

Sometimes it is really good to get it off your chest

to tell other people what the problem is.

I need to get this off my chest

to tell someone about a thing that is worrying you or to reveal

a hidden secret that has been troubling you.

It is a very healthy thing to do

and quite often if you want to talk to someone,

maybe there is something that has been worrying you for a long time.

It is good to get that thing off your chest.

You get it off your chest.

We can also say that you unburden yourself.

Unburden.

If you unburden, it means you take away.

The problem you no longer have to worry about that thing.

You unburden the thing that you want to talk about.

You get it off your chest.

This also is a very common expression.

We use this quite a lot in all types of English.

Here's another one.

This is not a very happy one.

The next one is a little bit depressing for some people.

So I do apologise if this makes you feel

a little gloomy.

One foot in the grave.

We are looking at idioms and expressions connected to the human body.

If you have one foot in the grave,

well, this is a humorous way of describing a person who is old

and not long for this world,

maybe a person who looks unwell, or maybe under the weather.

So if a person appears to be unwell

or if they appear to be sick,

you might say that they look as if they have one foot in the grave.

They are really unwell.

So you normally use this expression with someone who you are familiar with.

You never use this expression.

Never say this to a stranger because they will be quite upset and offended by it.

But if you say to your friend, Oh, you look terrible today, you look like you have one foot in the grave,

you look unwell or under the weather.

They look like they have one foot in the grave.

Of course, if you have both feet in the grave,

maybe all of you is in the grave.

Well,

I think we all know what that means.

Here's another one.

We are looking at body idioms, parts of the body

or parts of the human anatomy.

Oh, I like that one. Anatomy.

The study of the human body,

all of the parts and what they are called and what they do

is called anatomy.

Anatomy. I like that.

It's a very nice word.

The next one we have now is play it by ear.

To play something by ear is to carry out or do something

with no preparation whatsoever.

So you are doing it without any practise.

You are doing it, but you don't really know

what it will turn out like or how good it will be.

You play something by ear

to work out what to do as you go along.

So you have no plan.

You have nothing prepared.

However, you will play something by ear

so quite often, maybe in in music if you are playing the violin

or maybe the saxophone

more, or

more, apparently the saxophone

is the coolest, the coolest instrument

that exists.

The saxophone, apparently

I'm not sure if you agree with me,

but apparently the saxophone

is the coolest instrument to play something by ear.

It means you make it up, or maybe you do something without having any practise.

First of all, you work out what to do as you go along.

You are making your plan as you do it.

You have no strategy or plan.

You play it by ear.

You don't have any plan.

Here's another one,

another gruesome one.

Another nasty one.

You might say

something that will cost an arm and a leg.

Something that costs an arm and a leg

to pay a high price for something, maybe something that is very expensive

or maybe something that is more expensive than you intend it.

So maybe you want to buy a lovely gift for your wife

and you know that your wife wants a lovely diamond ring for her birthday.

So you go out, but you only plan to spend

£500.

Wow. Your wife must be amazing.

Oh, she must be such a lovely lady

if you are going to spend £500.

But when you go to the shop,

you realise that the ring that she wants

is actually

more expensive than that.

It is actually £5,000, not 500.

So you have to pay more than you intended.

You only in tended to spend 500,

but instead you have to spend 5000

on the lovely diamond ring.

So you pay more or you have to pay

more than you actually wanted to.
