Learning English - Late and Live - 23rd May 2013 - 10pm UK time - android or iphone ?

Can you see what I'm doing here? i'm putting some peanuts into this bird

feeder in English there is an expression to go nuts or to be nutty this means

that a person is behaving in a strange or unusual way or if they get angry

about something suddenly they will go nuts to be very keen on something or

excited about something can also be described as going nuts for example I

always go nuts when mr. Steve comes home from work I can always hear his car

coming up the driveway what about you do you ever get nuts?

do you ever become nutty about something? maybe you are about to get nuts right

now because it's just after 10 o'clock here in the UK it's a Wednesday night

and this is late and live English

oh hello there here we go again is it really Wednesday again already I

can't believe that Wednesday is here again oh my goodness these days I hardly

get a chance to take a rest I don't know what it is May has been an absolutely

crazy month hi everybody this is mr. Duncan in England how are you today are

you okay I hope so are you happy well are you happy I

really hope so I'm happy today I'm so happy I'm feeling so carefree today that

I'm actually wearing my shorts would you like to have a live view of my hairy

legs really okay then so there it is that my lovely legs can you see them oh

I don't think so now I have very thin legs and my knees are very nobly but

there you can see today I am wearing my shorts and my lovely blue and green

socks so that's what I'm doing today as a way of keeping cool because it has

been so hot here today it's been really really hot we are having such a

wonderful period of weather I don't know why and can you believe we have another

public holiday next week during May we actually have two public holidays during

the month of May so next weekend it is an extra long weekend because we have

another public holiday we call it a bank holiday here in the UK so when we have a

public holiday we normally refer to it as a bank holiday bank holiday because

traditionally all the banks would close and many businesses would also close for

the bank holiday not now though many banks stay closed

but you will find lots of shops will actually open on bank holiday so on a

public holiday they will actually keep the shops open even though most people

are not at work the shops will stay open so it's good news for some people but

not good news if you happen to work in a shop so it's not very good from that

point of view we are going to reveal something now straight away straight

into it remember last week mr. Steve was talking about one of the flowers in the

garden and he referred to it as a busy Lizzie busy Lizzie well guess what

I checked the flower today and guess what it isn't a busy Lizzie no it is not

it's not a busy Lizzie it all in fact the flower in question is a forget-me-not

forget-me-nots so there it is a beautiful flower by the way

forget-me-nots so forget-me-nots are very small flowers

they are blue and as you can see they have a lovely little yellow center

forget-me-nots and apparently the name has a romantic connection because

apparently if you meet someone for the first time and they are wearing one of

those flowers on their clothing maybe is a buttonhole apparently you will never

forget them so apparently that is where the name

forget-me-nots comes from I'm not kidding I wish I was I wish that was a

joke but it isn't so so unfortunately mr.

Steve was slightly ever so slightly wrong with his guests

it was not busy Lizzie it was in fact forget-me-nots and I have

taken some advice from one of my viewers because last week I mentioned that I was

looking at some of the flowers in the garden and someone recommended an

application for your phone so that's exactly what I've done I've downloaded

it and tonight I was in the garden taking lots of photographs of the plants

in the garden and identifying them so i felt quite excited about that although i

think i've made the mistake of having one of the free apps so i decided not to

pay for it so i had one of the free ones and I did notice that quite often the

application was suggesting suggesting the wrong actually the wrong plant so

the suggestion was incorrect so I don't know I think maybe that particular

application may need some adjustments I think so all we have the live chat I

mustn't forget about the live chat because sometimes on Wednesday I do

forget all about it so let's have a look at the live chat wow it's very busy at

hello Wes antha annual bedding plants such as lobelia salvia and petunia and

busy Lizzie can be started early yes well busy Lizzie can I just tell you

is a very popular plant and it comes in all sorts of beautiful colors as well

so yes the busy Lizzie's were were not correctly identified last week we got

them wrong in fact they are forget-me-nots the rhododendron how is

your rhododendron looking well I will show you right now I'm going to show you

right now because tonight I decided to do a little bit of filming and well

let's just have a look shall we so here it is the view tonight

and you will see my rhododendron in a moment so let's have a look and as you

could see the field at the back of my house is looking very lovely at the

moment there are lots of buttercups growing so those small yellow flowers

are actually called buttercups buttercups very nice plants as well very

breezy today quite a lot of wind and there it is the rhododendron is now on

your screen looking wonderful so it's almost out in full bloom now so it's all

almost out in full bloom so there it is my lovely rhododendron and yes as I

always mention this particular flower was always on my spelling test during my

English exam it's cool so even though this plant is very lovely I have some

strange memories of the name of this plant from my school days so everything

looking lovely tonight look at that so you can see all of those little white

flowers those flowers are called cow parsley cow parsley and there is a

little pigeon that is one of the pigeons that is building a nest at the moment in

my garden and there it's gone some lovely dandelions are coming out and you

can see the seeds waiting to be carried away by the breeze so tonight is a

lovely lovely night we had a gorgeous sunset tonight absolutely stunning so we

had a lovely sunset and you can see in the garden today I was drying my clothes

over there I am I think I'm just checking to see if my clothes are dry

there it is the view tonight where are we going next let's have a look shall we

oh look at that that particular plant is called a corn flour corn flour and I

found that out tonight by using my little application on my smartphone and

can you see the laburnum so that particular tree is called laburnum and

there is a beautiful buttercup a lovely buttercup close up and there it is the

view tonight looking across the Shropshire hills into the distance and

it was a beautiful evening and we had a lovely sunset as well I will show you

the sunset in a moment and there they are there they are

that forget-me-nots so those are the plants that we thought were busy

Lizzie's but they're not they are forgettable nots and there it is the

sunset

quite quite lovely I think we will have a look at that again later on because

that is such a lovely lovely sight so a beautiful evening here in the UK I hope

questions to ask I am in the process of renewing my phone contract so the phone

contract that I have at the moment is about to come to an end now the phone

that I've had is actually a Samsung Galaxy 5 an s5 which of course is now

four years old so I'm thinking of changing the phone but keeping the same

phone plan so I've come to a very strange moment of time because I'm now

thinking about getting an iPhone mr. Duncan we can't believe it you are

really thinking of getting an iPhone after everything you've said in the past

you are such a hypocrite so yes that's exactly what I'm doing at

the moment I am thinking at the moment of getting a new phone

changing the phone and it will be on my contract so it won't cost much more

money so I will have not the same contract but I'm thinking of getting a

new phone so which one should I get now I'm thinking of getting an iPhone

iPhone 6s because mr. Steve has one and I really like the look of it I think

it's quite a nice phone and it works very well so the phone I have it at the

moment is a samsung galaxy s5 which is four years old so I am in a bit of a a

quandary at the moment that's a great word by the way

quandary if you are in a quandary it means you have a difficult

a decision to make or you are in a confused state over something so that's

the position I'm in at the moment so I'm not sure what to do should I get an

android phone or should I get an Apple phone and the choices I have well I'm

thinking of getting an Apple 6 an apple 6s because I quite like the look of it

apparently the photographs and the video it takes is very good so that's what I'm

thinking of I'm thinking of doing and your advice would be most welcome

for a very long time they give me a very good discount so I'm thinking now after

four years of having the same phone I'm thinking of having an Apple phone and of

course for many many many years I have not been a fan of Apple products I think

they are quite expensive very dare I say overpriced in some cases so I'm not a

big fan of Apple phones or Apple products they do tend to be very

expensive and I think they are overpriced that's just my opinion so now

I am having to eat my words I'm having to go back on what I said so I'm

thinking now we're getting an iPhone but I'm not quite sure mr. Steve

has an iPhone s6 s not the 6s plus because that's much larger it's too big

so what I'm thinking of having is the iPhone 6s which is which is smaller so I

don't want a big one I don't want a big phone because it's very hard to carry

around and apparently also the camera on the 6s plus is not as good as on the

success so I really do need those 12 of those 12 megapixels I really need them

the iPhone 6s because it is the best choice it is the best choice well I'm

not too sure you see I'm not too sure now I have been playing with mr. Steve's

phone I have been playing with it so it does seem to work quite well but I think

the iPhone 6s is maybe two maybe two or three years old

so there you go I'm not really sure what to do so shall I keep my Samsung Galaxy

s5 or shall I get an iPhone 6s now the reason why I'm so interested in that

particular phone is because the video recording on it is very very good it's

very high quality and it's also very steady and that's the only thing I don't

like about the Samsung the problem with the Samsung is when you film with the

Samsung camera it's a little bit shaky even if you have the steady shot working

so it's a little shaky but what I've noticed with the iPhone the iPhone 6s is

that when you film with it it's very very smooth and very very steady even if

your hands are very shaky so it doesn't seem to matter so I I like to use the

phone to video with so I like to record videos but also I like the the video

footage to be very smooth as well not not shaky so that's just my thought

Galaxy S 8 or 9 I recommend yes I would probably go with a Galaxy s8 or maybe s9

but I'm not really sure how how well it videos what the video quality is like

really impressed with the iPhone success I thought the video quality was amazing

looked as if you were using some expensive Steadicam to keep everything

people are unable to concentrate for long periods of time due to having short

but in amateur dramatics we don't have such luxuries so so if you become ill

you have to just go onto the stage feeling really sick yeah you have to

I've been on feeling very ill before now but if you're that bad you literally

can't appear then somebody would have to go on just with a script and pretend to

be you I've never seen that happen but apparently it does happen

he's the thing that Steve's very good at now Steve gets very very embarrassed

when people give him compliments he doesn't like compliments but Steve is

the envy of everyone in every single group that is don't say that in every

single group that is joined or being with people always say mr. Steve we

think it's amazing that you can just put the book down and you can remember the

lines so quickly I know I mentioned this the other week but a lot of people are

very impressed by Steve's ability to remember all of the lines so he reads

them he goes through them and then remembers them and that's one of the

reasons why I could never do that you see because I'm hopeless at remembering

things I really do I can't remember anything I sometimes I forget my own

name but mr. Steve is very good he has a very good retentive memory you are very

good at putting things into your brain and then they stay there I haven't

really it's just going over and over and over it mr. Duncan that's all it is so

it's it's just it's just repetition action yeah I don't have a photographic

memory people who have if you describe someone as having a photographic memory

hmm it means they only have to read it once or twice and I've learnt it that's

not me at all I have to work very hard at it

remembering the lines it's just that I do it earlier than other people because

I don't like to go into a show at the last minute not remembering the lines I

need to be going into rehearsals well before

knowing the lines and not having to use the book it gives me confidence so

that's that's a thing you said the other week you you you feel better you feel

more at ease when once you've that you are sure that you've remembered the lion

that's right yes that's quite good but it's a bit like learning English you see

so some people ask me mr. Duncan how do I learn English on my own and there are

many ways to to actually learn English by yourself and as I always say the

hardest part of learning English is speaking English is making the sounds

because it is a little bit like performing so when you speak a second

language certainly when you start speaking a second language it is a

little bit like going on a stage but as I always say the more you do something

the easier it becomes and then the easier it becomes the more you enjoy

doing it repetition and then the more you want to do it

so yes it's quite interesting that you should mention that because it's very

similar to learning English so that is the thing that I always stress I always

say never be afraid to repeat things never be afraid sometimes to learn

something new you have to learn like a child and one of the best ways to learn

is to repeat Steve does exactly the same thing so that's how Steve remembers all

of the lines all of the things he has to say on the stage and that's it's exactly

the same thing so learning a new language is the same thing you repeat

repeat remember repeat remember you make the

things go into your brain so I think so any water so let's have a look I teach

of something because one of the amateur dramatic groups that you're involved in

Steve they were going to put on a certain show called Hello Dolly and we

both agreed that it would have been great if Steve had played the lead role

and of course the lead role is a female lead role but in the past men have

actually played the lead role so so that the character is a woman a very brassy

classy woman called dolly Andy busty I would say as well what does

busty mean a woman with prominent breasts she has no cut dress she has

large ample ample bosoms bosoms do people still say bosoms I don't know it

sounds like some of your grandmother says there are other words it can be

used but yes yes we don't do that sort of thing

busty it means it means a woman a buxom it means a well-endowed woman she has

very voluptuous that word buxom is books or books um well-built solid you know

I can't stop doing this now I feel as if I feel as if I I should have something

it's it's it's not active but you can go out and you're above the clouds it's

quite incredible that is not doing anna says what technique is steve used to

memorize I just literally I just go over and over it

I look at it and then I look away from the page and and try to remember it and

when you're in a scene with lots of other people they've all got their

dialogue I record what I do is I record all the other parts onto a tape recorder

hmm or onto my phone that's oh this is a great idea by the way when other people

found out about this they were amazed that this is what you did oh I'm not the

only one oh I know so yes so I do all the other voices and then leave a gap

where I'm supposed to speak and then so I'll do the whole scene and and then

when I rehearse it at home then when it comes to my line I just I'd have to say

it in the gap that I've left well and that's a good as you could you might be

a do that for English if you're recording conversation between people well this is

something I've suggested in the past I I've suggested that people who want to

practice English on their own actually use use a mobile phone or a tape

recorder something that can record their voice and they can listen back to what

they're saying they can listen to themselves but Steve does all the other

parts including the women parts but when you do the female parts you do a very

high voice don't do it now it's very funny when you do that big because I can

hear Steve in his music room and he's up there doing all sorts of things and it

sounds like he's having a party up there because there are lots of other voices

up there but of course it's Steve on tape so Steve acts with the

you've recorded less Aurora says there what's the best way to speak if you

don't have anybody with you well you could record yourself asking yourself

questions so you could say you know what is my name what have you done today and

you could record like a fictitious conversation and then you can then you

can record playback and leave gaps where you would say they give the answer and

then you could you could do it that way yes like ass we could write a script yes

and you could actually do both parts so you could record half of the

conversation and then you could interact with that half of the conversation by

using what whatever you wanted to say so you could interact with the recording a

off and tonight I was telling some people and he had to have it amputated

people somebody says oh I know somebody who got their ring caught in something

and their finger was either dislocated or kamo

husband and he lept up to do something and his ring got caught in the net came

down and his finger tore his finger off and I've that lot people are having lots

is probably the what you would call the correct proper English pronunciation of

the word I think that's a Queen's in you will find that the difference is

probably between that the north and south so because your mother was raised

in the south maybe that's the reason why and that's

the reason why you you you have what I would call a posh accent

so me posh my accent is a bit sort of flat have really don't know what you
