What a lovely day

for taking a walk in the countryside.

Admiring the scenery, looking at all of the wild life,

looking out for the elusive animals

that are often shy and timid.

That's what I'm doing today.

I'm having a lovely walk, and we are having some wonderful weather at the moment.

Here in England.

Oh, I can't believe we've done 200 of these.

English addict live streams, of course.

That does not mean that we've only done two live streams.

We've actually done.

Can you believe it?

Almost a thousand live streams

over the years since 2016.

And that's when I started doing my live streams was way back in 2016.

But of course, we started doing this

particular series of live streams just

as the pandemic started.

So towards the end of 2019 was

when we started doing English Addict And then of course

2020 came along.

And I think the rest, as they say, is history.

Hmm. It certainly is.

So my name is Duncan. I talk about English.

I like English.

You might say that I'm one of those you see up there I am an English addict.

I love the English language so much.

I hope one day I can marry

a lovely language that is English.

But today a little bit different because it is episode 200

I can't believe I've done 200 of these.

Does it feel like 200?

Some people say, Mr.

Duncan, it feels like 2 million.

It feels like we've had to sit through

a lot of your live streams over the years.

That's OK as long as you enjoy them.

That is the most important thing of all, as long

as you enjoy what I do.

And then maybe

we can all have a little bit of fun.

We have the English language yesterday.

Today is a special day. It's a beautiful day.

You might notice behind me looking out of my studio window.

Look, there it is. The view out of the window.

Is rather nice at the moment.

In the garden.

It looks fantastic.

We are having a wonderful late spring day

it is a very strange time of year.

I always think that May is a very strange time of year

because it's neither spring nor summer.

It's kind of in between.

But now you can see most of the trees have their leaves.

Lots of lovely blossom is coming out all over the garden.

And I suppose I should also show you my lovely lavender tree as well.

Would you like to have a look

Isn't that beautiful?

It's not.

Bit is not lovely. Wow.

So all of the lovely lilac blossom

has come out on the tree in the garden.

And the sad thing is it never lasts very long.

Have you noticed that?

How how short?

The beautiful colours and the blossom lasts for.

It's only around for a very short time.

And then as quick as it came, it disappears.

Anyway, enough of that.

It's all happiness today.

We will have a lot of smiles.

Hopefully especially after 2:30 when Mr.

Steve arrives.

We are finding out this week what Mr Steve has been up to a busy week in his life.

Also a busy week in my life.

Would you like to know what I've been doing this week?

Well, for some of this week, I've been sitting in front of my computer

trying to sort one or two problems out

concerning my YouTube channel.

That's all I'm saying.

Let's just say it is connected to

copyright and music

so that's what I've been doing for most of this week,

trying to sort out things that.

Well,

I have to sort out by myself.

So if there are any problems with my YouTube channel, I have to do it all by myself.

I don't have anyone to help me.

I do it all on my own. I

film, I edit,

I produce everything

I have to make the tea.

I know sometimes Mr.

Steve makes a cup of tea for me, but most of the time

I have to make my own tea.

Do you have someone in your life

who makes a cup of tea for you?

Do you have someone special?

It doesn't have to be your partner.

Maybe there is a work colleague who is very generous and kind,

and they always offer to make the tea

or the coffee in the morning at work.

So do you have someone generous like that, or do you all like to take turn and if you take turns

doing something, it means that each person

takes responsibility at some point.

So one person will do it on Monday,

then another person will do it on Tuesday.

So each person will take responsibility.

So each person will take their turn

doing the tea or the coffee.

So what about you?

Do you have a magic person in your life?

Who often offers to make you a cup of tea or a cup of coffee?

Is this someone like that? Maybe someone at work?

I have worked in many strange environments over the years.

If you know me well, you will know.

Many years ago I worked in sales retail

and also in an office as well.

So I've worked in many different environs

over the years, and I think it is good practise,

especially if you want to develop your social skills

to improve your social skills.

And I think this is one of the things

that a lot of people have difficulty with in their lives.

Socialising going out and meeting new people.

Of course when you're young it's easy,

but even even in your teenage years

or in your twenties, you can still find it difficult to meet new people

and to make friends.

I did I have to be honest with you again, this is a story I've told you before,

but over the years I've had to deal with shyness

and being a little introverted,

not having much confidence, especially in social situations,

and especially during my teenage years

and my early twenties, I found it very difficult to socialise, quite,

quite hard to walk up

to a person, just walk up to them and say, Hello,

my name is Duncan.

What's yours?

Maybe if you are at a party

and there are lots of people there you don't know.

So being in a social situation can be

a thing that causes

a lot of anxiety and I used to suffer from that quite a lot.

Not so much anymore.

For various reasons, but one of the things I wanted to mention

was I used to work many years ago in an office

and the office environment I think is a very unique thing

because quite often if you work in an office,

it means you are very close to other people

and quite often for long periods of time,

for very, very long periods, maybe six or 7 hours each day,

you have to spend time with all of those people in a very small space.

And I remember

finding that quite difficult to cope with.

I didn't like it.

I think one of the worst environments I've ever worked in is in an office.

I didn't like it. I found it really.

I suppose the word I want to use is claustrophobic.

So you feel as if you're closed in.

You can't breathe, especially in some offices, because it is possible

to work in an office that has no windows.

Maybe there is very little natural light coming into the room,

just lots of those horrible fluorescent

lights that offices tend to have.

And it's not a very nice environment.

And then of course, you might have

people nearby who you don't like.

Maybe they have some very annoying habits that you don't like.

So there are many situations where this can happen.

So what about you?

Are you a person who can socialise easily?

What about the environment?

What type of work environment do you work in?

Do you work in a place where you have a lot of freedom and space

or do you work in an environment

where there are lots of people around you

and they are all quite nearby

and if you are near to someone you don't like,

your job can become quite unpleasant to say the least.

One of the things I notice about getting older is quite often

you choke on nothing

Have you ever done that where you choke on nothing?

It happens sometimes.

In fact,

it might be happening now.

It is strange.

Sometimes that happens.

Sometimes you choke on nothing.

There is nothing in your mouth.

But you choke.

Suddenly, you can't stop coughing.

I have a feeling that I might still have a little bit of COVID

Not the actual virus, but the the after effects.

Because yesterday, Mr.

Steve and myself, we went for a walk.

We had a lovely walk because the weather was nice. But

afterwards we came back and we arrived back home,

and we both felt absolutely exhausted.

And we didn't have a very it wasn't a big walk.

We didn't walk for hundreds of miles,

but we felt absolute really tired.

I can't remember the last time I felt so tired after having a walk.

I don't know what happened, but I know there are some people who are suffering

long side effects from coronavirus.

Some people find that they they have no energy

or they get tired very easily.

So I think it is happening to some people where they do

feel exhausted and tired all the time

after going through the COVID illness.

Yesterday, we were outside.

I decided also to do a little bit of filming

at the back of the house as well, because as you know,

we have some lovely cows,

some beautiful cows and some lovely bulls at the back of the house.

And I couldn't resist showing you

one or two sequences with them.

And all of these video clips have one thing in common.

The cows and the bulls are taking it easy

I must admit, I'm enjoying all of the colours today.

There's lots of green and lots of yellow.

They seem to be the dominant colours

on the days live stream.

Yes, we are together

live on this Super Sunday and we are having the most brilliant day.

The most amazing weather I was.

Can I let you in on a secret here?

I was going to go outside

for today's livestream, but then this morning I decided not to

because I thought if I do that, maybe

lots of people will start making all sorts of noise

with their lawnmowers and all of their other noisy equipment.

So I decided not to.

So instead I'm in the studio.

However, we can still enjoy the beautiful sights outside.

And there it is, a very colourful day with the green grass.

You might even be able to see that there's some sheep there running around as well.

So little sheep in the distance.

Miles and miles away, having a very nice time.

We have something

very special to show you today.

An animal

that we saw yesterday during our walk.

A lovely animal.

And it is an animal that we've never shown before.

And yesterday I managed to film

this particular animal so that coming up in a few moments with mr.

I am here talking of the king of English

and talking all about the English language.

That's my job, apparently,

I think, one of the most mistaken things in the English language.

The weather is lovely.

The nature is having a wonderful time.

Mother Nature is running around completely naked at the moment because it's

describe it as late spring and I suppose

also early summer.

A bee came into the studio

and started causing all sorts of havoc, for which I apologise.

And that's the reason why.

Because I was being attacked by a bee.

It was flying all around and causing

quite a lot of chaos.

I hope you enjoyed the cows in the field, because if there's one thing I love watching, it's nature.

And we are going to look at quite a lot of nature today,

including an animal that we saw yesterday.

That we've never, ever seen before

or filmed or even shown on the live chat ever.

I was going to go outside today, but I decided not to.

But yes, I mean that we know what we know what makes people angry

around this area and littering is one of them.

Mentally, physically, every joint is aching, my hips are aching

and my hand and joints in my fingers are hurting, my necks hurting.

I think, you know, once you pass 60, it's all downhill from there.

We were talking about nature a few moments ago.

We have something very special to show you.

An animal that we've never filmed and we've never showed before.

And I want to say thank

you to Steve, because it was Steve who actually spotted the animal.

You saw it.

And so we we stayed very still.

And the animal came towards us, and I was able to film it.

The quality of the video isn't very good,

mainly because I filmed it.

But there is something there and it's quite

interesting to see and we were really excited about it.

One of the things about walking in the countryside, Steve,

you never know what you're going to find,

particularly if you stay very still

and just sort of observe and watch

and see what comes out of the undergrowth.

Yes, I'm very into the bushes.

I'm very good at staying still, but Mr Steve isn't very good at staying quiet,

except yesterday because I was tired.

I just stood still.

Yeah, and I think to this particular creature,

I must have seemed almost barely alive because it hardly reacted at all.

He's the animal that we saw yesterday.

I wonder how long it will take you to to recognise the animal.

But we are going to look at it now and we're going to see how long it takes you to spot the animals.

so in a

and try to catch the thing it is looking for.

For some reason, it didn't know we were there.

Mm. Mm. I think it was. It was being very cautious,

but it seemed

as if it knew we were there, but it wasn't really afraid

and I think also it was a little bit injured, so it looks like it's

actually sustained an injury.

I like the way it looks back.

Just heard me then. Yeah,

it looks back and then it runs away because it realises that maybe.

Maybe it's camera shy. Perhaps.

Maybe that's the reason why.

So there it was.

Yesterday we saw a lovely fox, one of the most

beautiful creatures around.

And you don't see them very often.

Ironically,

you don't see them very often in the countryside.

However, you see them a lot in urban areas.

Where there are lots of houses and people.

It's very strange.

When we lived in Wolverhampton, we used to see them all the time.

If you went for

a walk at night, you would often see a fox trotting around,

you know, going into people's bins looking for something to eat.

And they weren't tame.

But at the same, you know, I come back at night in one across the road, they were everywhere.

But of course in the countryside they are.

I think they're cold, aren't they, to keep their populations down yes.

And of course the more they're more cautious as well.

So wild, wild animals are more cautious

than urban animals because they are they are more comfortable with humans.

And of course, the farmers don't like them because if they're keeping sort of poultry

or small birds, then obviously the fox is going to attack them.

So they tend to kill the foxes in the countryside.

Well, as I always say, a fox has got to live it's got to live somehow,

even if it has to eat some chickens now and again, or the occasional rabbit.

Ooh, that

reminds me, we've got some baby rabbits, haven't we, in the garden,

wildlife is closing in on this area.

Well, I have to put up an electric fence

surrounded by animals, cows, foxes.

We've got everything around here.

So there is there is a little, a little family of baby

rabbits, and they, they keep playing on the lawn.

The only problem is they don't stay there very long.

So I normally don't have a chance to film them,

but I really want to take some video footage

of of the baby rabbits in the garden and their suit and suit.

Tiny and cute.

Pedro said he's going in a moment, so I thought I'd say hello before he goes.

Pedro never stays for long.

We don't mind we don't mind as long as he's here.

That's the main thing

from the largest animals down to the smallest creatures.

So what have I been doing this morning, Mr. Duncan?

I've been trying to keep the ants away.

Because outside, we've got this sort of patio area,

and they came in the house.

They sort of the slightest hole anywhere.

They will come up.

So I've been filling all the holes around the grouting

of the paving slabs to discourage them.

And ask them gently to move away.

This is another area, because last year we had ants everywhere.

So I've been filling in every little hole, every little gap in the grouting

because they seem to like coming out there looking for food and go back in again

and building their nests underneath the paving slabs.

But of course, when the populations get too big, they start coming in the house. Yes.

And also the other thing is the ants have been around for millions of years.

Then they're not going anywhere. They are.

They're very adaptable.

They are able to adapt to all situations.

So that's one of the reasons why ants quite often get everywhere

because they are very good at adapting.

I think so.

Right? Yes.

We don't want ants in our pants.

No. As the saying goes, or anywhere for that matter.

We saw something yesterday on our wall again.

Did we see something else?

Yes, we saw a lot of things yesterday.

Here's something that we saw yesterday.

I'm not sure if anyone can identify this,

but it's a very interesting plant that we saw growing.

And I've never seen this before.

Steve, it's a very unusual plant.

It looks like wheat or barley, but it isn't so.

So does anyone know what this is and one of the reasons

why we noticed this yesterday, because we we noticed

lots of pollen coming off this particular plant

and you can see there is

lots of it looks like hair, doesn't it?

But all of that is actually pollen.

And if you if you touch it with your hand, lots

and lots of dust comes off, it's some kind of grass. Hmm.

But if anyone can identify that, in fact, there's a lot of it around here.

And I notice it gets very tall, it can get as tall as sort of, you know, two metres tall.

This grass can

I think it's a grass it looks like a grass

as you say.

It looks a bit like wheat, but it's much bigger than that.

We had some in the back of our garden last year.

So if anyone knows what this is, please let us know.

And of course, I suppose

I should also mention that May has arrived.

We are approaching mid-May and for me and many people that is always bad news

because that means the hay fever season is beginning

bad news for people like me.

So in a couple of weeks I won't be able to go outside

because if I do, I will be sneezing my head off with hay fever.

So not quite yet, but as soon as all of the grass

starts to produce it's pollen, then

it's bad news for me.

You'll be drugged up with antihistamines and I might have to to present the show.

Mr Duncan, that's never going to happen because you might be too ill to continue.

That's never going to happen, ever.

Victoria says that

she finds lots of green lizards

in her garden and once spotted a salamander.

Oh, I think they're quite large, aren't they?

We were quite scared.

Yes, yes.

So salamanders are like snakes with legs, I always think.

Is that right? Yes, I think so. Yes. That long.

They look like snakes with legs there.

Maybe they're some kind of you know, in evolutionary terms, somewhere between a snake and a lizard.

Maybe some expert would be able to tell us that Mother's Day,

apparently in Brazil at the moment, hello to all the mothers in Brazil.

That's presumably where Pedro's going after this.

Yes, maybe, maybe, maybe we don't know.

But yes, yes.

Mother's Day every week it's Mother's Day in some country around the world.

I mean, Mother's Day for us was about a month ago, wasn't it?

It was. It was.

Well, it was towards the end of April. Yes.

And yet every week we come on, somebody says it's Mother's Day in their country.

So it's it's amazing.

How different it is in different countries.

It's spread out.

Irfan says Mr Duncan is prone to getting hay fever.

If you are prone to something, it means you are at risk

or you are susceptible to that particular thing.

So yes, you are right.

I am prone to getting hay fever

during the mid-summer months so that is coming

and it normally lasts normally during June

and then July it starts to ease away.

So I do get to enjoy some of summer, not all of it.

If you were if you were a mother

and you liked the attention of Mother's Day,

you could literally travel to many different countries

from sort of

March through to May and celebrate Mother's Day everywhere you went.

Yes. Couldn't you?

I like the idea you were a mother and you like the attention of Mother's Day.

If it's how should we go to that country next week on holiday and then it be Mother's Day

and you'd have to buy some more chocolates and flowers and another card.

And then you go to another country and it would be Mother's Day.

Then you'd have to repeat the whole process ever again.

So, yes, if you are somebody that likes Mother's Day,

you could go on a world tour

and celebrate it every week somewhere in the world.

It's a bit like Christmas because quite often there are two Christmases.

There's Christmas that we have, and then a few days later there is another Christmas

so you could technically celebrate Christmas twice as well.

Just like the Queen of England, she has two birthdays.

She does.

Duncan. Apostrophes.

It is one of those areas of the English language

that a lot of people get confused by even here.

Would you like to see a classic use,

or should I say misuse use of the apostrophe?

Here we go.

Look at the picture on the screen.

So you can see here there are several mistakes

that people have made or someone has made.

And this is on the side of a van, a vehicle right

and someone noticed that this person has literally

used the apostrophe incorrectly.

Right the way through.

For example, Moti Faily, is he he's included,

I'm assuming it's a he by the way, because it's a builder's van.

So there so before anyone says I'm being sexist, I'm

not emotive failures

with an apostrophe which of course is wrong.

And then we have diagnostics also.

They are using an apostrophe incorrectly brakes

in the fact that they are native English speakers. So.

So a lot of people get them wrong.

to show possession.

Possession one thing

is possessed.

When I say possessed, I don't mean, like possessed

like that.

I mean owning or being owned by

or connected to in a strong way or a definite way.

So an apostrophe is often used to show possession.

One thing belongs to another.

So we often see the apostrophe as defining the ownership

or the connexion between two things.

Normally there is another way which we will also talk about a little bit later on.

The Apostrophe Express is the connexion

or ownership, and I will give you some examples in a moment.

So don't worry don't panic.

There are examples coming.

Don't go away.

The apostrophe express is the connexion or ownership.

So one thing belongs to someone else,

or there is a connexion between those things, maybe a place,

maybe a business, maybe a thing.

For example,

now you can see how you should use

an apostrophe.

This is how you use the apostrophe.

You can see that the ball belongs to the dog.

So we say that a the dog's ball.

That's

an interesting example, Mr. Duncan.

You know, I've just only just realised I read it, just realised that the dog's ball.

Well he's, he's only got one, you see, had an accident.

He was jumping over a gate.

You mean a toy? Yeah.

You mean a toy?

Of course I do, yes.

A dog's.

I can't look at that the same now.

A dog's ball.

So the ball

belongs to the dog and we use the apostrophe to show you that,

to show that it is possessive

because if you don't have the apostrophe then

that is referring to the plural more than one.

So without the apostrophe

you would say the dogs are everywhere.

The dogs.

There are dogs in my garden and there would be no apostrophe.

But this is possessive.

Here we go. Another one.

A cat's collar.

The collar belongs to the cat.

So we use the apostrophe.

A girl's bike.

It is a bike that belongs to a girl.

Or maybe it is a bike that is often ridden

or used by a girl, a girl's bike

and a boys toy.

Mr. Steve has a boy's toy.

Do I?

Well, of course you do.

You have your. Your lovely car.

A boys toy.

Is a thing that belongs to a boy.

It is possessive.

We are showing that that thing belongs to the other person.

So the apostrophe is used to separate the plural from the possessive.

It is a way of making sure that there is no mistake

also, it is very useful when you are writing as well,

especially when you are writing signs for your shop

or your business.

You have to make sure that you don't misuse

the apostrophe.

Here we go.

So put simply, dogs without the apostrophe is plural.

More than one.

Dogs with an apostrophe is possessive.

We are talking about something that is related to the dog

or belonging to the dog.

The dog's meal, the dog's leash,

the dog's ball

or plural

the dog's balls may be

when a possessive is used with a plural syntax.

That is the way of using a sentence or constructing a sentence.

The apostrophe might come at the end of the word, for example, and you will see this quite often.

For example, the teacher's college,

you can see there that we are using the possessive,

but the apostrophe comes at the end.

So there is no need to state anything else

you know that that is the teacher's college.

So the R and S are not separated by the apostrophe.

Can you can you separate them? Yes. Yes.

So that's an alternative way of

indicating the possessive then?

Yes, it's strange.

It's one of those strange grey areas in English.

You might actually say that, that it is often used in American English more than British English as well.

So I think you'd also it just depends on which type of English

you are adopting in that particular sense.

So the thing that is possessive, the apostrophe can also come at the end,

especially when it can also be used as a plural as well.

So teachers can be used as both a plural and as a possessive.

So by simply putting the apostrophe at the end shows

very clearly that you are talking about the possessive clause.

You are saying that the college is for people to learn

to become teachers.

It is the teachers college

a contraction and this is the other use of the apostrophe.

Steve, a contraction also uses

or can be used as an apostrophe.

Shall I try that again?

A contraction also used or uses an apostrophe in words

such as don't wear there

shouldn't and wouldn't.

So that's the other reason why we use apostrophes.

If there is a letter missing from a word,

we often fill that space with an apostrophe.

So now so you're you're combining

two words to make it quicker to write it. Yes.

Because otherwise you'd have said

like shouldn't should that should not, isn't it?

That's it.

So instead of having to say, should not you put an apostrophe in the T

or would not, is contracted to wouldn't sit.

So the space that would or the space

that would be taken up by the missing letters becomes the apostrophe.

You are showing that that has been shortened.

Of course, there are exceptions.

Won't won't quite often.

Doesn't have an apostrophe.

It's one of those things that some people argue about.

So won't will not quite often, will not have

or it won't have an apostrophe.

It's one of those strange little quirks of the English language.

So now you can see why this is wrong.

So they are talking about plural

in this particular situation, beds are plural.

So you don't need an apostrophe.

Mattresses.

That's the nice springy thing that you lie down on.

It doesn't need

to have an apostrophe because you were talking plural.

You are saying that this shop sells

beds, lots of beds, mattresses,

sofas, lots of them.

So you don't actually need to have the apostrophe.

And I suppose also it explains this as well, much better.

Now you can see why this is wrong the most failures.

Well, it's not possessive.

It definitely is not.

Yes. So diagnostics you're discovering what is wrong with the car?

You are testing it to find out what is wrong with it.

You don't need you don't need it.

You don't need the possessive there.

You are just using the noun.

You are saying diagnostics.

That is what you are doing.

That is the task that we will carry out for you.

We will repair brakes.

Well, again, you don't need to add the apostrophe.

This is still my favourite these two are my favourite, Steve Clutches.

Clutches, that's my favourite.

And also Campbell's.

Both of these are plural.

You are naming the parts of the car

so you can see that the apostrophe is something

that can cause a lot of trouble.

You are going to say, Steve, they've even used one at the end there.

That was correct. Incorrect as well in the writing.

Yes. First of all, makes and models. Yes.

And you don't need apostrophes anywhere.

You know what I think?

I think what they've done is whoever designed that sign

they they panicked.

Maybe they did it, but they didn't put the apostrophes in and they thought,

hmm, that doesn't look right.

I feel as if I need to put apostrophes in there.

So instead of making any mistakes, I'm just going to put

apostrophes in everything.

And maybe somewhere in there, maybe some of these will be right.

And fortunately,

they are 100% 100% wrong, unfortunately.

So none of these things should have apostrophes.

So to the person who is driving around in this van,

can you please change the supplier of your signs?

Go somewhere else.

that there is a semicolon or a colon

at the beginning of the word and the end of the word.

So that is a completely different thing.

It's a little bit like speech.

If you are reporting speech you will have the little

semicolons or colons at the end

and also at the beginning of the word, because you are saying

or repeating what another person has said,

scissors, POW-MIA gives an example there.

Because unless, of course, you were talking about an aspect

of the scissors, for example.

But if you were talking about the plural form of scissors,

I have a lot of scissors.

There isn't. It's the same spelling.

so the trousers you are talking about that actual thing and something relating to it.

Then there will be an apostrophe.

But if I have three pairs of scissors here and if you are trying

to indicate that you had more than one pair of scissors,

you would just have to say how many you've got.

You would have to say, I've got three pairs of scissors or three scissors or four scissors.

And spelling remains the same because there's no

plural spelling for scissors already.

You might say on my table, there are lots of scissors, lots of scissors, scissors.

There are scissors everywhere.

And you, but you would not put apostrophe s, as Mr.

Duncan said, unless you were referring to something to do with the scissors.

So the rule is quite simple, but it can be confusing because there are some slight

very Asians and because of that and this happens to everyone.

So we are not we are not trying to to make you

seem as if you don't understand what what we are saying is we do it.

I think I've done it in the past.

I'm sure in the past I've used an apostrophe in the wrong place or at the wrong time.

So it can happen.

You can do it by accident or you you might panic

If you said the 19 years old uncle, that would be grammatically incorrect,

but you would say the 19 year old,

you wouldn't put the S at the end anyway,

so there would be no need for an apostrophe at all.

However, if you are referring to the 19 year old uncle,

then yes, you would because you are referring to an aspect

the 19 years old uncle.

But once again

the grammar people out there

would come around and they would probably break all of your windows to be honest.

But you just wouldn't say that, you wouldn't say it like that,

you would say your 19 year old uncle or your 19 year old

auntie, you wouldn't have an s

on the years if you decided to use the sentence in that way.

Yes, my uncle is 19 years old is you would be that that would be grammatically correct.

we used to get these different sausages and they had all these

different herbs and spices inside.

And there was one I'm sure it had apple inside.

I'm sure it was Apple.

We had one with wild garlic in it.

Oh, yes, of course. I forgot.

We actually did buy some last year. Yes.

Oh, and that would have been the year before because the shop that sells them before

and out with the we don't like it anymore.

Well, that's so two years ago we did see sausages

with Wild Garlic and we bought them and they were absolutely delicious.

well,

it's almost worth going back to that shop just to see if they've got them. Hmm.

Oh, we can make our own.

We could, we could, we could get our own sausage meat

and sausage skins.

I don't know what I don't know if you can buy sausage skin.

Sausage skin. It's not easy to say that, by the way.

So maybe it may be you could make your own and chop some wild garlic.

Bruno says you can buy them at his local butchers.

Well,

yeah.

So, yes, maybe.

Maybe we can buy them locally as well.

We need to check out our local butcher.

Yes, particularly the wild garlic is is very seasoned well,

then it'll be gone in about two weeks time.

You won't be able to.

It's only here for a short period of time.

Just the season. That's right. So

we only saw them that once, and it was about this time of the year.

So, yes, we will check our local butcher.

That will be my job this week to check out the local butcher and to see if he his God

save his sausages smell like garlic

glue.

I was absolutely addicted

to pickled garlic when I was in China.

Used to be able to get these big banks of pickled garlic

and I used to sit at night and I would eat

so much garlic

and I never once saw a Chinese vampire.

Not once. So it must have worked. It must have worked.

That's pretty much it.

If I if I talked any more about apostrophes, I think

I think it would be very boring and dull and I think I might fall to sleep well.

Apostrophes are useful

when you want to show possession of something, a possessive clause,

or if you are using a contraction,

and then you will put their apostrophe in the place where

the letters are missing.

I think garlic might be my most favourite thing

to eat, especially with things like cheese as well.

That's another one.

You can get special cheese that has garlic inside and it is amazing.

The only problem is and we've learnt this in the past,

if you eat too much garlic it can make your stomach very bad.

We've had bad stomachs you see.

Bruno says that I don't collect

wild garlic because it's dangerous.

There's a plant that looks very similar but is poisonous.

So that's what worried me.

Yesterday, Bruno, I decided I picked the leaves

and then in the end I decided not to put them in the meal because

even though that probably is wild garlic,

I still would want somebody to verify that

and confirm whether it is definitely safe

to put in food because I didn't want to poison Mr.

Duncan on the eve of his 200th

I've just thought of something.

Steve, how how did we find out

that things are poisonous?

How do we find out?

So we were talking about this.

Well, we were having one of our, one of our little chats at the dinner table, and we were both wondering

how how did we discover

that certain types of mushroom,

for example, will kill you?

How did they find out about those things?

I'm just wondering if it was just by accident maybe they noticed

someone eating a mushroom.

And then and then a few moments later, they collapsed on the floor and died

and they might think, oh, I'm going to make a note of that.

That particular mushroom will kill you if you eat it.

So I always find it quite interesting how did how did they discover that

certain things like arsenic,

how do you how did you find out that it will kill you?

So they must have found out by someone actually

taking it and dying from it.

Well, I read a survival guide say for example,

that if you are

out in the wild

and you maybe

maybe you've been on a shipwreck or maybe you've

you've just ended up somehow in the wild,

maybe you've gone to the top of Wenlock Edge and you've got lost and you've got all

these plants around you, and you have to try and decide whether you can eat them or not, apparently,

because if you've got a poisonous plant,

you've got to have a set.

You've got to eat, eat a certain amount of it for it to kill you.

So apparently what you do is you take a very small amount of it and see how you react to that.

And then that can determine whether it's safe to eat or not.

I wouldn't like to do that, but apparently that's if you are desperate to know

if you can eat a certain plant or a fungus or a mushroom,

then you can just take a little bit of it and try it

and see when probably kill you a small amount.

But if you get a stomach-ache, maybe stay away from it.

But certain plants are poisonous,

raw, but if you cook them, they're not poisonous.

Anymore.

Well, there is that there is that type of fish, isn't there?

There's a type of fish that you have to prepare very carefully.

It's a Japanese delicacy we could go through for something.

It's cool, isn't it?

Blowfish is what it's called, and you have to you have to carefully take all of the poison,

all the poisonous organs out, and then you prepare it.

But if you make a mistake

and you leave some of the poison

in the fish then the person will

they will die.

Well, red kidney beans, which are very popular

in in food red kidney beans.

So they've got a sort of a red dye in them when you cook them

and we put them in our chilli on can.

Well, red kidney beans are poisonous, but

when you cook them for a period of time,

a long period of time, it destroys the poison in them.

And you can then eat them quite safely.

So red kidney beans, don't try eating them raw.

I think you've got to cook them for at least half an hour to

to kill the toxin in them.

So so there's a good tip.

Always make sure your red kidney beans, your red

kidney beans are thoroughly cooked.

I've heard this about rice as well.

Is that true? Rice, rice.

If you cook rice and then leave it out

then there is some

bacteria that will grow in the in the cold rice.

Say you cook the rice, that's fine. Rice is fine.

But if you then leave it out, it can get infected

with a bacteria that can give you food or make you very ill.

I think it can kill you.

Well, people that cook rising countries where they cook a lot of rice

and they may be use one of these these rice cookers.

And then if you leave the rice in there, I think it can become sort of infected

with the bacteria and then you can keep re infecting it and get quite sick with it.

So you've got to be careful with rice.

If it's cooked, you can put it in the put it in the fridge.

Keep it cool, I think.

And I remember a friend of mine living in Malaysia

said that they they never reheat,

reheat cooked rice if it's whatever

if there's any leftover, they chuck it away because apparently you can become quite sick

with it. Yes.

So that's but it seems like such an innocent food

rice, you just say, oh, look, there's some rice.

Oh, lovely.

But even that if you if you don't store it or if you don't store it

properly after cooking, it can can make you very ill.

Mm hmm. Yes.

And of course, any food they left out will

when you buy pre

sort of made meals and ready made meals,

you've got to only heat them once and heat them very quickly.

You can't

call them down and then reheat them again, because every time you do that,

there's a little period of time where the bacteria at that point

where the food is heating up, bacteria will grow in it

and give up their poisonous toxic substances.

So every time you heat and cool, cool them down

again, the bacteria enter that zone, but they can grow very quickly.

So you've got to be quite careful with saved lives.

Am I right?

Also, you have to be very careful with potatoes as well.

Certainly if you

if you're digging your own from the ground because there are certain things that are in the soil.

I might be wrong here, but I do remember a few years ago, people

warning other people about potatoes.

You have to be careful.

I think it might be in the preparation perhaps.

So if you're preparing your potatoes and maybe you cut your finger.

So I don't think it's actually about eating them, but I haven't.

But I think if you eat soil, I don't think it's good for you

because there might be something in that as well.

But although lots of kids eat dirt

that I remember trying to eat dirt as a child,

and kids kids will put anything in their mouth.

They will, especially if it looks delicious, like a sweet or something.

But what you got to watch out with?

Well, of course, they say now that that's possibly one of the reasons

why so many children have allergic problems, allergies

is because they don't

get enough sort of exposure to soil and things like that.

Younger. Yeah.

To build up sort of immunity in the body, they think that they don't know.

Cause the problem with soil is you've got to be careful

of getting soil into a cut because of tetanus.

Yes. So that, you know, that's I think that's the one I'm referring to.

I think that's one I'm actually on about.

So think even things that seem seem like a casual moment of time,

maybe you cut your finger whilst you're preparing your potatoes and maybe a little bit of the soil,

a little bit of the something

from the ground goes into your bloodstream and then you are in trouble.

So it is it is strange, but I'm always fascinated how we find out

about these things, how we discover

that eating a certain type of mushroom.

I think that's the one I think more people

than any other

food I think mushrooms might be the one that mean

that people are taken to hospital or even or even killed.

So you have to be very careful with things like mushrooms.

There are so many varieties that look tempting,

but I believe the killer is a good way of working that.

I think a lot of them are very bright.

I think it's different with mushrooms, you know, magic mushrooms.

Mr Duncan, they are now looking at magic mushrooms.

As a way of treating certain mental disorders.

I think because they've discovered that it's

actually probably better than a lot of say.

I don't know, for example, antidepressants or something like that.

They're beginning to look at magic mushrooms as a way of treating such a disorders of the mind.

So so magic mushrooms in that sense is a type of mushroom that you eat or.

I think I think also you put it in food as well

and it makes you go, hey, man,

apparently.

Yes. I've never tried it, by the way.

Well, it's like looking frogs, you know, that's another that's another way of getting spaced out, isn't it?

I don't think that's true.

I think that was on a cartoon that was on Southpark.

That was a joke.

I think I don't think it's a real thing that

it's ever got anything else to talk about. MR.

I get high on life.

And I always say, no, I'm not on anything.

I don't smoke anything illegal or take anything illegal.

I'm just high on life when I wake up in the morning, you know what I do first thing in the morning, Steve?

I open my eyes and I have a smile, a big smile

on my face because I get I get all of this again.

We get to do this again.

I get to spend another day of my life with this

this individual and and you're still here to tell the tale.

What do you do first thing in the morning besides moan?

Oh, I'm always moaning. Yes. I have a glass of water.

That's the first thing I do in the morning because I think it's flushes out my kidneys, OK?

And that prevents you from getting kidney stones?

I don't know it is the first thing I do in the morning.

Do you still have your do you still have your poison spit as well?

No, I don't. You do that.

But Steve used to Steve used to refuse

to to swallow his morning spit.

I read somewhere that

it's full of toxins and you should spit it out.

It's probably rubbish, of course.

But yeah, if one if he's been do you think about it?

If you've been sleeping all night, then you, you, you know,

you haven't drank any water for maybe seven or 8 hours.

If it was the daytime you would be drinking, you know something every hour probably.

So you must wake up in the morning somewhat.

Dehydrate it.

So the first thing I do is take a glass of water

and my mother always did that and her mother always did it.

And they didn't have any kidney problems.

So I think it maybe is helping me. Hmm.

Maybe, maybe not.

Some people have a cup of tea

yeah. What do you do first?

How many people out there have a glass of water when they first get up?

Or do you have tea or coffee?

Because, of course, tea or coffee well, they say they say

the caffeine in tea or coffee dehydrates you, but

you still are taking in water.

It's still hydrating you.

You may be a bit more, but you still getting some hydration

from that, from that the liquid and the tea in the coffee.

As long as you don't do it in the bed, that's that's that's my that's my only rule.

A litre?

Yes, one litre that sounds like a lot.

Well, maybe that's over the morning.

Oh, maybe not all at once.

Of course there have been debates over the years

of how much water you are supposed to drink during the day.

And this is, this has become a big thing.

And there are some people that have this I don't know if you've heard of it, Steve, but you have to drink

some some ridiculous amount of water every day.

It's something crazy like 20 litres or

ten litres of water during the day.

I'm not sure if that's good for you.

I'm not sure if any part of your body wants ten litres of water every day,

but there is something like that a type of diet and they believe that

it flushes your system.

But I think you can only flush your system so many times

before before you start washing away your internal organs.

Well, there's always somebody with somebody saying you should drink so many, I think it's ten litres a day.

I think they recommend but I mean that depends on the person,

it depends on the temperature, depends on so many things.

If you just stick to that ten litre a day rule,

some days you'd be going to the toilet every 5 minutes.

Another days you probably wouldn't.

But I mean if it's winter you don't need ten litres of water a day. No,

because it's

cold so you don't sweat so you're not using up water.

But if it's the summer you might I might need two litres.

I don't know particularly if you're playing tennis or going for a long go for a run or doing some exercise.

It varies and somebody said to me, a doctor said to me years ago,

forget about any rules about

how much water you should drink during the day.

The, the indication if you're drinking

the right amount of water is the colour of your urine.

Yeah.

So if you are drinking the correct amount of water,

your urine should be a very pale yellow colour and that's it.

You don't need to follow any particular rule anyway.

You know, when you're thirsty yeah.

Yeah, I am terrible, by the way, for drinking water.

I sometimes during the day I won't drink anything.

I might have my cup of tea in the morning

and maybe coffee and then an evening tea, but that's it.

I won't drink anything in between.

And I know in the past that that I yes, you're right.

I actually that's a brilliant point.

Sometimes when you go for a wee wee, it looks like tea, it looks like black tea.

And I'm sure that's not good for something else.

But also, if it's clear, you have to be careful as well.

I think if it's like water, you have to also sometimes be careful

because you might have too much sugar.

Am I right that.

No, that if it's if it's just very, very pale that just that just probably

I mean, if you go into the toilet all the time and urine

is the same colour as the water you're drinking, the you probably drinking too much water. Yes.

You know, but if it's like a dark yellow, then you're probably not drinking enough.

If it's the same colour is this field, if you're, if your wee wee looks

the same colour is this, then that's not good for you.

Then you need to have a rule as such, not as if

I think it's the first time we've talked about urine ever before.

I think we talk about it every week. Yes. Rather

the water has to be room temperature instead of cold. Yes.

I don't like having cold water.

It's sort of it sort of sends my stomach into a spasm.

It's nice to have it at room temperature.

I think so.

Otherwise it's sort of it's a shock to the body

and some people like to put a little bit of lemon juice in there

and it's quite popular now to have this apple cider

put a few teaspoons of apple cider juice

into your water that's supposed to help you it sounds that sounds disgusting.

There's always somebody telling us how much water we need to drink.

It's so boring.

I mean, come on. We're human beings. We've got.

We've got instincts.

We know how much water to drink and how much not to drink.

Everybody knows when they're not.

When they haven't drink enough water.

If we are talking about something not to worry about, if we are talking about food,

that is a completely different thing altogether.

Sometimes I miss my morning meal,

but quite often I will have maybe some toast.

But I do like my evening meal.

I do we had the most delicious meal last night.

The chilli con carne last night.

It is, yes. Cooked.

Hey, here's something that also annoys me.

If we're going to change the subject away from here in OK, is every F,

you know, if you're looking at news items and if you're on the internet,

every regular once a month, once

every two months, someone writes an article about a study

that's done telling you, telling us how much sleep we should get.

Oh, I'm sick to death of people

telling me how much sleep I need because they're all different.

Every article that's written, and I can't believe people are being paid

somebody is you know, somebody is being quite clever here.

All these people doing these long year two,

three, five year studies on sleep

and then they come out with a study saying,

oh, we need 8 hours sleep.

And then another study comes out says you must have between seven and 8 hours sleep.

Well, it's the same, isn't it?

I know. And it's always different.

And then now there was another article saying if you're over 60, you only need 7 hours sleep.

And then there was another one, somebody on another one.

I read that your sleep should be divided into 90 minute

level so if you want, you have lots of sleeps during the day.

Yes, you shouldn't.

Apparently this article said you've got to think of it in 90 minutes.

So OK.

And you know, I mean it's ridiculous.

You feel tired, you go to bed.

Everyone knows when they're not getting enough sleep.

We all know because we feel tired yeah.

And I'm sure we can catch up at the weekend.

I'm sick to death of people telling me how much sleep I need.

But we do this all the time though.

We, I think people like to read these stories and the internet is full of them.

How to lose weight whilst still eating well.

I mean, sleep.

You can't, you can't you can't lose weight when you're eating.

So we don't want to talk about that again. I do.

I do know.

Well, because because by going, everyone's different.

You can't write a rule like that and say everyone should get that same amount of sleep

because everyone's different.

And what you've done in the day, you've just literally said that.

I know they studies never look at that.

And so you're repeating, you guys should get into one of those.

It must be a must be a good you.

It must be a nice old trick to get into that being paid into a useless, pointless study for years. Yes.

Well, a lot of a lot of scientists do this a lot of universities do it.

They study something that sounds useful. Yes.

And then they

well, and then they get a they get a grant yeah.

Two or $3 million or pounds to do this study.

And then at the end, you have to produce a report.

You all you have to you have no choice.

And quite often the report at the end of it is just a load of rubbish.

That's it.

Sleep is subjective, says Vittoria.

We all we don't all need the same amount.

And it depends on the time of year, the season, that's it.

In the winter you probably need more sleep because it's dark is less light. Hmm.

I mean, how many millions of years, how many hundreds of thousands

of years of human beings being going to sleep?

We, you know, not millions.

It's, you know, it's it's something you'd have to think about sleep.

I don't think I'm going to stop worrying about it.

You know, if you don't get enough sleep one night, you can catch up the next yeah.

You feel tired, you go to bed, listen to your body, OK,

so it's sending me to sleep.
