it's Wednesday it's Halloween it's late and live

live from Much Wenlock in England on a Sunday afternoon this is live English

mr. Duncan it isn't Sunday it's Wednesday as you

just said

so here we go it is Wednesday and it's late in live it's been a long time since

we've done one of these and the big question is will I managed to stay awake

for the whole stream that's the big question just to give you an idea of how

cold it is tonight we have the fire burning in the living room there it is a

live view of the fireplace and just in case you are feeling a little bit cold

at the moment you can you can move closer to your computer monitor or

mobile device and hopefully the fire in our house will keep you warm so here we

go and what is coming well first of all I can tell you something I can tell you

something that's here right now guess who is here go on see if you can guess

yes it's mr. Steve and mr. Duncan oh my goodness I nearly said 21 years 12 years it's only

12 years so what are we doing to celebrate mr. Duncan I'm very excited I

know a lot of party celebrations cake smacks that sort of thing have you laid

something on for the celebration mr. Duncan absolutely nothing I have a glass

of water well I have a glass of water that's it is that how you're celebrating

no alcohol no vodka no beer just a glass of water

know I'm not usually on at the beginning upstairs frantically preparing her words

and phrases and idioms and and we're certainly not normally on this late at

night we're not I've just realized that it's

very late at night it's been a while since we've done one of these and

already I can feel it I can feel it I can feel it hitting me

all of the neighbors are asleep in bed now actually you're right because I've

been about half an hour ago I thought I'm gonna go for a little walk outside

it's pitch dark okay I felt a bit tense tense because I've been working today

now I had to work late upstairs tonight I felt really tense and wound up I

needed to release some tension I thought I'll go for a walk and it was very still

cold dark slightly drizzly bit of drizzle with rain and there was nobody

around and you know it was absolutely wonderful and I can't remember where I

was going with this story what did you what did you say just before I started

the story well I said hello welcome to the live stream this is mr. Steve he's

joining me tonight and you said you said something about water and then I drank a

little bit of water we had to look at the fireplace so there's there's the

fireplace we had a look at that and then you said you were feeling a little bit

tense and then he went and then he went outside and I also mentioned that the

neighbors were all in bed that's it that's what it was thank you mr. Duncan

oh you're so clever and I went for this walk and I noticed that as I was walking

it was only half and half past 9:00 at night okay all the houses all the lights

were off yes hardly any houses had any lights on because around here where we

live they all go to bed at 9:00 9:30 at night all the neighbors go to bed very

early they do we're the only ones still up it's what and when I it's quite

bizarre every time we go out anywhere and come back you know it's before 10

o'clock the place is dead you you would have no problem finding us after 8:00

p.m. at night yes because because our house is the only one that still has its

lights on if we say it's dead we mentioned that word didn't we on there

on on Sunday yes so I was saying it's dead in the village is dead

yeah not meaning there are dead bodies everywhere I was just very quiet

nothing's happening okay I was trying to get through today's live

stream without mentioning dead or death but it's Halloween it's

Steve's fault and of course it is Halloween actually

mr. Duncan sorry to interrupt I think the reason that they'll go to bed early

is because they know that often we go for walks late at night and they're

scared stiff so they all they all go inside because I feel a bit they feel a

bit uneasy we're walking the street without with our torches flashing light

everywhere or torches yes but what kind of what kind of torch is that well we've

got several sizes of torches yes we've got a very small one I've got a

medium-sized one and we've got a huge one it's like carrying a lighthouse on

you something it's very hot so you interrupted me for that was it worth it

I don't know let the viewers decide I'm not quite sure so here we go and we are

celebrating twelve years on YouTube mr. Duncan I still can't believe that I've

been doing this for over 12 years look look at the sign behind Steve that's

what it says it says 12 years look at that yes as Steve is completely in the

way of it back a bit further that's it yeah that's it there it is it says 12

years on YouTube can you believe it I can't believe it it was on this day in

2006 that I created my youtube name Duncan in China and of all the questions

that I'm asked I think one of the most common ones is mr. Duncan why do you

call your YouTube channel Duncan in China well the reason is because when I

created my YouTube channel I was living in China I was not only living in China

I was also teaching in China and there you can see me in China and this picture

was taken on my first day in China teaching English what did you do to that

girl to make her look she looks like she's trying to stifle her laugh well

she was quite embarrassed I think she's quite embarrassed because most of my

students had never met a foreigner so I was the

first foreigner the first person that many of them had met says she was shy

she was a bit shy and that and that was my first ever lesson so so one of the

the members of staff at the school came in with a camera and took some

photographs and I was also feeling a little awkward as well so this

particular photograph was taken not 12 years ago but way back in 2003 Wow

so even longer ago you could at I it looks like it was 1970 or something

because of the quality of the picture yes well it was way back in 2003

don't forget digital photography was in its early stages in 2003

not many people appreciate just how basic cameras were and just 15 years ago

so technology has come such a long way so there is a photograph just to show

that I was in China let's have a look at another one and this is the place in

which I was living and this is where I started my youtube channel in China got

a nice straight road that is a lovely road in all those houses when I first

moved to the city of Bao toe all of those houses were empty they'd been

built but no one could afford to live in them but now they are all full so people

are living in all of those houses now there are people in all those empty

apartments they are living there now because things have changed over the

years and here's another photograph Here I am

sitting by my computer there we go and now you know why my channel is called

Duncan in China because when I created my YouTube channel I was still living in

China and you can't change the name of it now can you well I can change the

name but you still keep the original name when it comes up as a URL so that's

the main problem one more picture in China do you know where I am

can you recognize the place do you recognize that handsome man and I'm not

talking about Chairman Mao I was about to say that it's not Chairman Mao that's

the other guy who took the picture mr. Duncan it was one of my friends who

lived in Beijing Wow and I went to visit during the October

holidays because they they celebrate their national holiday in October and I

went to stay for a couple of days in Beijing so there you can see me standing

in Tiananmen Square you look like a real dude do I look like

your definitely you should have a rucksack on your back and a tent that

was so loaded up that was 13 years ago remember that top where did you get that

top from I actually bought that top whilst I was in China and you can tell

it was bought in China because the English on the shirt is dreadful it

doesn't mean anything hmm and this is something you would

often see you would often see t-shirts and sweatshirts in clothing with things

written on them in English but the English would make no sense because the

person that designed the the the t-shirt or the sweatshirt didn't speak English

so they just put anything down you don't like you've got an unfeasibly long neck

oh thank you that's very kind of you and here's one like one more one more I'm

sure you're getting bored with this I am yes and here's another one taken during

the holiday season during the Chinese New Year and you can see and just behind

me you can't see in that photograph but there was snow all over the place it had

been snowing so actually they it was freezing cold you still got those gloves

a bit like tonight have I still got those gloves I think I have some wear

and lying around somewhere I think I've still got them yes so they're for those

who are wondering why we call the channel Duncan in China now you know why

because I created this channel whilst living in China although having said

that 12 years ago we weren't doing this we didn't have the

livestream of this technology this high level of technology so originally the

the quality of the video the quality of the the video footage anything that you

uploaded to YouTube was a very poor quality and you couldn't livestream at

all that's correct when YouTube first started so way way

back in 2006 YouTube was a very different place reminiscing or you are

rather because I didn't really help you out in the beginning no because you were

in England and I was in China yes but even when you came back I wasn't helping

you out very much I was supporting you supporting you some might say venture

some might say you're still not helping me very much I've been there

most of those 12 years through the heartache and the tears and that's just

me though the trials and tribulations the ups and downs we are going to have a

look at some of my very early videos by the way some of which I I did film in

China but first do you know what's coming next yes a live chat the live

able to do tonight's live stream I really thought I was going to have no

energy but I seem to have perked up I've got I've got my energy is the phrase we

hello mr. Duncan hello mr. Steve purest silk at 77 from Cordoba Argentina

Cordoba it's a province that in the center in the middle of the Argentinian

map so we have Mediterranean weather we have almost everything very very cold

winters with sometimes with snow and very very hot summers we are not my

husband and I we are not fond of summer because it's very very very hot but now

it's springtime and it's a beautiful weather springtime is the best for us

everything is green the plants are beautiful but the birds are coming to

eat here and we have a little river a little branch of the a nice I got a

river at the end of our yard we have 9 steps and then we have the river and

then there's a little island we call it an island it's a a patch of land

know how to say it but there are lots of trees and plants and rocks and sand well

I wanted to tell you that when we found you was a very very hot day a very hot

summer day it was last Christmas we were looking for something on the internet

with snow a film or something and we found you and it was Treasury and we

loved your your lessons yeah we loved your jokes I love when you roll your

eyes I love it it makes me laugh and sometimes I'm moody or sad and you're

really enlighten my Sunday breakfast and for that I just want to say thank you

thanks to you and mr. Steve and also I wanted to say something about Halloween

that I hate masks really but there are some beautiful disguises there there are

beautiful costumes really beautifully made that I like but masks no I don't

like any scary mask and the first thing that I

wanted to say it's to salute you congratulate you because of your 12th

year on the life on the the YouTube lessons it's really amazing where those

lessons are we so well made the music the places you record the

birds with the nature so I thank you I thank you for your lessons and I love

make a request can you share these photographs with other classmates there

are some pictures of the Amazon Opera House so I thought we will show one of

the photographs so here it is Wow Amazon Opera House so there is a magnificent

building now what I love about that photograph Pedro is you have the very

stark contrast between the old building and the new building in the distance so

there you can see a large tower block obviously there are people living in

that and in the foreground you have the Opera House so you have quite a quite an

interesting contrast there between old and new so thanks a lot Pedro for

sharing that I do appreciate it I think also I have something else to

show oh yes I know because if you noticed ensue cats recording yes could

you hear the birds I could yeah I thought what lovely wildlife I could

hear I could hear that in the background under and sooo cats got a river at the

bottom of a yard and an island as well here is sunix here is sue calm sue kepts

God and right now here it is so there is sue caps guard and look at that oh that

looks fantastic and if you look very closely you can see a cat oh yes

winter effects sooo cats cat sooo cats cat but look at that I must admit your

your garden looks amazing I love that big old tree what type of tree is that I

don't know I don't know I don't know what that is it probably it might be

like a rain forest tree I don't know yes it looks incredible - no it does look

amazing that looks beautiful tsukete so yes congratulations you it looks like

you've got yourself a very nice garden there who probably don't that's probably

a tree that could well be native to Argentina or certainly South America ok

nice to know the name of it whether we doesn't look familiar to me I don't

think we've got them here in the UK oh but yes if you do know the name of that

and zoo cat was saying she doesn't like people with masks on well we are going

to put our special Halloween masks on right now mr. Steve if you if you come

because I'm going to now do something for Halloween oh we are now going to

wear our pumpkin heads is it going to be scary it might be a little bit scary so

there we go to celebrate to celebrate Halloween we are now wearing our pumpkin

heads do you like that then as you can see there are some holes in the front so

we won't suffocate so what do you think Steve do you love very oh I'll get

moving don't you have to keep moving and I'm trying to line my eyes up with a

hole it will never happen there we go look I'm doing it you won't

be able to line your eyes up unless your head is the same shape as a pumpkin I'm

because during Halloween people make something called a jack-o'-lantern

where they they carve a face in the front of a pumpkin I don't know what

Steve's doing there I'm trying to get closer so that I can line my eyes in the

mouth exactly there we go we're back on there

have time because it's it's the 31st is in the middle of the week we didn't

really have time to good last time it was on a Sunday wasn't it mr. day that's

it yes because it's in the week everything is crazy and chaotic and I've

been working ah so that's the way it goes it's our 12th anniversary 12 years

teaching English that's my job I think one of the most common questions

I'm asked during my time here in China by my students is how can I improve my

English

there's one thing I've noticed my fingers have gone dead look my fingers

have got a strange ready blue purpley pink color not very good I think I think

if I stay outside much longer I think they will fall off hi everybody this is

English teaching videos you know the world of English is a fun and exciting

place to be I'm so glad you could join us for another lesson why do we need

phonetics the reason why we need a phonetic code is because some English

letters have more than one sound and because some letters when joined

together in a word actually create a new sound of their own also there is the

silent letter that can appear within a word

it is Wednesday night late and live just like it says on your screen 20 minutes

away from 11 o'clock at night it's not daytime it's nighttime here in the UK so

how are you feeling Steve I'm holding up which is an expression that means I'm

is a car that I used to own back in the early 1980s so yes it looks very

interesting and I will be paying more attention to that and going into more

at petrol Isha's at petrol issues as if they've interested in cars it's worth a

look it is a well-known fact that Steve does like cars JC Geordi is here mr.

Duncan congratulations on your 12th anniversary yes it was 12 years ago

today when it all started Anna says Oh a very young mr. Duncan yes

I was very young 12 years ago and they were also commenting about other aspects

of your appearance which may have changed over the years nothing I think

someone may have mentioned that I am a little heavier now than I was then we

know that and have you been on the scales yet no look we'll do this on

Sunday shall we will do it properly so what I will try to do on Sunday is set

up a proper camera and so we can do it live but it's very hard to do it live

because we need to be on a hard surface and the problem is that the carpet in

here is very song here so the scales don't work that was interesting because

mr. Duncan weighed himself on a hard floor surface and what board did you

weigh I think it showed me it showed me 10 stone now why yes I'm getting on to

that but what did it show what would you what is your actual proper what is your

weight now thirteen and a half thirteen and a half but then mr. Duncan came in

here with weathers of we're standing on a carpet and it weighed himself on there

he says oh I think that I think they were wrong upstairs that I'm only ten

and a half it's apparently if you put scales on a carpet they don't work they

must absorb some of the weight and it shows you the lower weight than you

actually are okay I think we understand that well I

didn't I didn't realize it did that a weighing machine if it put it on a

carpet I must admit I got very excited so if so this is a good idea for people

who are losing weight but you're not losing weight very quickly so if you

weigh yourself put put put the scales put the thing that you weigh yourself

with on a very soft surface and then you will actually appear to be lighter you

were well I don't know how that works but it does Tomic says he's been

watching eight years that's incredible Thank You

hello there today we are going to take a trip to a place

in Baotou the oldest community in the city a place called Dong Hg we must take

a bus to get there the number 5 bus so we will take it right now do you want to

come with us come on let's go

now that must look very promising but there was a big problem with that bus

that particular bus that we just saw stops in every single stop between here so it

would take and take around one hour he entered on her so we're going to wait

for the quick bus which only takes about 40 minutes

this is a very common practice in Baotou have taxi drivers stopping at the

bus stops and they will stop at the bus stop and they were home

buses are very popular here in China especially in Baotou where many people

still don't have cars so public transport is very very popular

a round Baotou there seem to be many many small police stations but the

curious thing is you barely see policemen I've never understood that one

now here's a memory way back in 2003 during SARS I remember clearly standing

up there at the top of that hill by the pagoda

and I was dancing and singing because I was so happy because I had my SARS

vacation and I remember this shop over here a camera shop they also came out

and they were so interested in the foreigner dancing around they started

taking pictures of me while I was doing it

as you can see donger is not a quiet place to be the cars and the buses are

continually sounding their horns all the time

Dong He is a busy small area of Baotou but in many ways Dong He is the heart of Baotou

a common feature in many cities in China are parks small areas for people to come

and relax and take exercise dong-he is no exception here we have a large square

for people to warm talk share moments together and also do a little bit of

exercise as well let's have a look around

another thing I always notice in China is how active old people are it may

sound a little patronising but it's true then elderly people in China do tend to

be more active than people in the West dare I say and dong-ha is a good example

of this activity if you look around you you will see I am literally surrounded

by people over 70 so it's a great feeling to see so many elderly people

very active and I think it's one thing that we in the West can take a good

lesson from

another common factor in Dong He as with the rest of China is the way it's

developing as you can see behind me yet another building is being constructed

in 1996 a large earthquake struck Dong He nobody was killed fortunately but

many of the old buildings were destroyed as a way of remembering this event a

large structure was built in the center of the square as you can see behind me

modern bio is very different to the Baotou of a hundred years ago when Baotou was

first created there was only Dong He so this is our

last glimpse at twin year Guanche our

it's worth mentioning that Spring Festival the Chinese New Year is coming

soon so many people around here today are getting very excited doing some

shopping and preparing for the Lunar New Year

so there you have it a little glimpse around Dong He here in Baotou China
