I have to say, it is hot.

I suppose the big question today is how many times

First of all, sorry about Sunday.

I'm ever so sorry, but I was suffering from hay fever.

It is something that affects me every single year.

Every time the summer arrives, I always spend a few days

feeling a little unwell because of hay fever.

And that's what happened on Sunday.

I was feeling really ill.

Really, under the weather.

Now, can I just say it is nothing serious,

nothing life threatening.

I don't think anyone has ever died from hay fever.

However, the problem is

people who suffer from hay fever quite often suffer

from other things as well, including asthma.

And of course, asthma is a very different situation altogether.

Because many people can.

Many people do.

In fact, many people have died

from having an asthma attack.

So because I have both of those things, sometimes it is a little worrying.

But this is just hay fever.

It's nothing serious.

It's OK.

I am feeling great.

The only problem is I often sneeze.

I often have sore eyes Sometimes

I find it very difficult to speak because my throat is sore.

But today I am OK.

And the reason is because I've sealed myself

in the studio completely.

I feel like one of those insects that you sometimes keep in a jar.

The only difference is there are no homes punched in the lid.

So that's what I feel like today in the studio

because all of the windows are closed everything is sealed.

So all of that horrible pollen cannot come in to the studio.

So I feel like one of those insects

that is being kept in a jam jar.

But the only difference is there are no holes

punched in the lid to let the air it.

So it is a little bit I suppose the word I'm looking for is stuffy.

It's very stuffy in here today.

Quite hot.

There is no air for me to breathe, unfortunately,

because I have to keep everything sealed

all of the windows closed so the pollen cannot come in.

So I am trying to protect myself today from that

horrible, horrible pollen that is in the air.

I mentioned the weather a few moments ago.

We have some glorious weather coming this week.

It is going to get

very hot.

We are talking.

33 degrees on Friday.

On Friday.

Although if you are watching in Europe,

you will know that, well,

if you are in Spain, or Portugal, you will know

definitely that it has been a hot week.

Some of the temperatures there have been crazy

In fact, it's hot today.

It's about to fall.

because I have my lights

and all of the windows are closed.

So the pollen will not affect me and make me sneeze.

I'm very glad to say that after 6 minutes

of doing my live stream today, I have not sneezed once.

Sometimes we have to face up to something.

Sometimes we have to face a problem or a person.

Quite often a person who has made us angry or upset.

Maybe someone who has been

annoying us in a certain way.

Confrontation is what we are talking about today.

Another thing I'm going to talk about.

Now, I'm not normally a person who goes

for fashion or things that are popular.

Quite often I will go the opposite way,

but I have become a little bit addicted to this particular thing.

I don't know if you've seen it, but a lot of people at the moment are going

absolutely crazy at the moment for this particular thing.

It's called Dali.

It is a type of intelligent software.

And all you have to do is you type

a sentence or some words into a box.

And then it will produce it will come up with images

using artificial intelligence.

Sometimes the images are good.

Sometimes they are very strange, and sometimes they are quite weird.

I will give you an example.

So this is something I did the other day.

I entered the following sentence.

William Shakespeare sitting on the toilet.

And this is what it came up with.

So as you can see, there were lots of pictures of William Shakespeare.

And you might notice in some of them, he is actually sitting on the toilet.

So that is all generated by artificial intelligence

just by typing

some words or a sentence into their system.

It will come up with images.

It will create unique images that don't exist anywhere else.

So as you can see, we have William Shakespeare,

and in some of the pictures, you can see that

he is actually sitting on the toilet.

And that is all created using artificial intelligence.

Here's another one that I created

I put the Queen of England as the Mona Lisa.

And this is what it came up with. It's not very good.

I will admit it doesn't look very good.

But there it is, the queen of England as the Mona Lisa.

And that is the best one that it created using artificial intelligence.

Apparently a computer programmer who works for Google

has leaked some information

concerning their artificial intelligence.

Apparently it has become self-aware.

It knows what it is,

which is the thing that a lot of people are afraid of.

If you've ever seen the movie Terminator, you will know all about that.

So when machines start thinking for themselves.

Well, a lot of people believe that that is is a bad thing.

And apparently this week, someone who works at Google, who apparently has

has now had to

take some time off from that job.

I don't know what that means.

I think it actually means suspended from that job.

But they did reveal that

apparently the artificial intelligence at Google

is starting to become self-aware.

We often talk about something

that is sentient, something that is aware

or something that reacts with the environment.

We are officially halfway through this month

and we are almost halfway through the year.

We are almost halfway through 2022

people already are talking about next year.

I think quite often when people start doing that,

they are often wishing for better time and let's be honest,

if I can be serious for a moment,

we are living through some really bizarre times

and I'm not even talking about COVID.

I mean, that was really, really weird.

That was a very strange period. Of time.

And here we are once again in what I can only describe

as a period of uncertainty

I can't think of any other word

that I want to use uncertainty.

I think everyone is quite uncertain

now I know from day to day our daily lives

we are fairly certain about things.

But I think these days, at this moment in time, I think there is a lot of uncertainty

about almost everything that you can think of.

Future job, many health,

everything,

even where you live

it is a very strange time indeed.

We are looking at some subjects today

some English subjects to help you hopefully

with your understanding of the English language.

We are now going to look at a subject that I think is interesting,

something that we often avoid doing, however,

something that we often try not to do.

However, now and again in life, we have to do it.

We have no choice.

We are talking all about confrontation confrontation.

It's a great word. Confrontation.

It is a word that

often comes around when there is some sort of disagreement,

something that is taking place, an occurrence

where maybe people are disagreeing or maybe there are things

that people want to talk about or say or even do

confrontation.

So that's what we're doing today.

For the next few moments, I hope you will stay with me.

The word confrontation is a noun

that defines a heated disagreement.

So quite often when we use the word confrontation, we are saying that there is

some sort of disagreement taking place.

There is a confrontation.

Maybe one group or two groups are coming together.

And of course, maybe one or two individuals

are coming together in a heated debate,

an argument or conflict

between two or more people is a confrontation.

You want to

talk about a certain thing with another person maybe something that is annoying you or irritating you,

maybe something that you feel you feel

as if you want to say it to them.

We've all been in that situation.

We've all been in a position where we've really wanted to say something to someone,

maybe another person has been annoying you

and you really want to to tell them

how much they've been annoying you.

But of course, to do that you have to have confrontation,

an argument or conflict

between two or more people is a confrontation.

To confront someone or something is to face it

directly or straight on.

So when we say straight on, we are doing it directly.

Maybe you are doing it face to face.

Perhaps you are doing it through a phone call.

You are doing it directly in some way,

and we often describe it as a confrontation.

To confront someone or something is to face it directly

you have to confront that thing.

A heated disagreement can be described as contention

so contention also describes

that feeling of something that is annoying you.

Some things that you have to say or tell someone

something that is making you so angry and mad

that you have to get it out in the open.

You have to tell that person how you feel.

It is something that you want to talk about.

However, it can also be an argument.

It can lead to some sort of disagreement, some sort of argument,

some sort of conflict

you confront someone.

But there is always a risk that there will be also

some arguing, fighting

and that's one of the reasons

why many people try to avoid confrontation.

The moment when something must be discussed

between individuals is confrontation.

As I said a few moments ago, it is something

you can't stop, you can't hold back, confront Tatian

quite often comes from an emotional reaction,

something that has been happening, something that has been annoying you

maybe something that has been

getting on your nerves and you really have to say something.

You can't hold it back you have to say something.

You really do.

A long running dispute will often lead to confrontation

so when we talk about something that is long running,

it is something that has been going on for a long time.

Long running, something that has been going on for a long time.

So a long running dispute is

a disagreement,

something that has been going on

that two people disagree about for a long time.

It will often lead to confrontation.

Quite often there are situations in our daily life

where there might be some sort of confrontation

and we will be looking at that in a few moments.

A disagreement between neighbours

might lead to confrontation.

Confrontation between neighbours

You might not realise this, but here in the UK, I don't know about where you are,

but here in the UK one of the biggest problems

that arises

between people

are are disputes or disagreements between neighbours.

It happens quite a lot and you can probably imagine

there would be many reasons why neighbours

would have some sort of disagreement

or some sort of conflict or confrontation.

There are many reasons.

Maybe there is noise maybe your neighbours are making a lot of noise,

maybe they are having parties and every night you can't get to sleep

and you keep saying tomorrow, tomorrow

I'm going to tell my neighbours what I think about their noise.

I'm going to tell them maybe your neighbour has a barking dog

that keeps barking all the time,

but maybe, maybe early

in the morning it is barking and it won't stop Maybe at night

it is barking, making a noise and you can't get to sleep.

So there is a situation

that might arise or come along

that will cause disagreement between neighbours

and it is one of the most common forms of disagreement

to face up to a person or problem

directly is confrontation.

You will go to that person directly

and you will tell them, you will explain what the problem is.

The thing that is annoying you, you will face up to that thing.

I like that expression, by the way. Face up.

If you face up to something, it means you are confronting it.

You are going to that thing directly.

You are facing up to something.

Maybe you have to face up to your punishment.

Maybe you have to face up to your embarrassment.

Something that you have to confront, something that you have to face directly

to make a complaint about

something is a form of confrontation.

So when you complain and we all do it,

if there is one thing that we all good at here

in England and across the UK, we are very good

at complaining about things

We complain about the weather.

We might complain about the food

that we have eaten in the restaurant

we might complain about our neighbour.

As I said a few moments ago.

So there are many things that we might complain about

and we do like to complain.

Maybe you are eating some food

in a restaurant and the food is not very good.

You might complain about it,

even though it can be very embarrassing if you are with someone.

I have been

on the

little trips where I've met friends and we've gone for a meal

and the people that we are dining with,

they start complaining about the food all the time.

They send the food back, they keep complaining and sometimes they complain

even though there is nothing really to complain about.

They just like to make a fuss.

So to make a complaint about something

is a form of confrontation.

However, not everyone likes to complain.

Not everyone likes to confront something

to complain or object

directly is confrontation.

You confront something you complain,

you object to something directly.

I suppose you might say that protesting

to have a protest over a certain issue

might be a form of confrontation.

You are confronting a certain problem or a certain issue,

maybe a demonstration

towards the government

or maybe some plans that a government has.

Or maybe you are trying to raise awareness.

You are confronting the ignorance

perhaps of a group of people.

So to confront can also be to protest as well.

A complaint or confrontation

might not occur face to face.

So there might be situations where you do not

confront a person directly.

You might do it through some other way.

And there are other ways of confronting a person without doing it.

Directly.

A confrontation might be carried out in a court of law

or through a counsellor.

So quite often there might be a situation

where the confrontation does not take place directly,

even though there is still confrontation, but it is not direct.

Quite often in law, maybe if a married couple are divorcing

their confrontation, their disagreements

might be carried out separately

through a court.

It does happen.

Many people try to avoid confrontation whenever possible.

It is true no one, no one likes confrontation.

However annoying something is, however bad

something seems to be

We will still avoid confrontation.

And I mentioned a few moments ago the situation with a neighbour.

If you have a dispute, if you have a problem with your neighbour,

they are doing something that is annoying you

and it is common it happens all the time.

Maybe you have experienced it.

Maybe one of your neighbours has been annoying you in some way

and you keep telling yourself, I'm going to do something about that.

I'm going to go round to my neighbour tomorrow

and tell them I'm going to confront them.

However,

quite often you don't do it

because you you worry, you are afraid

The confrontation is not, is not a good thing

to confront.

Someone is often seen as bad, negative.

And of course it can lead to other problems as well.

There is always a fear

of the consequences of confronting something or someone.

So I suppose the fear of confrontation is what the effect will be.

What will happen if I go round to my neighbour and complain?

What will they do?

How will they react?

Maybe they will be angry.

Maybe they will start a fight

verbally or physically.

So it is sometimes

a difficult situation.

Confrontation.

There is always a fear of the consequences

of confronting someone.

Of course, there are many people also who are not afraid

they will do anything to to face up

to a problem or a bad situation.

A war or violent battle is the conflict

We often describe war as conflict,

a serious conflict where

things I suppose

when war occurs it means things have got out of hand.

Things have gone too far.

War is a consequence quite often of disagreement.

And there are many things

that we can disagree about that might start

a war or conflict.

The confrontation of conflict is often brutal.

So a war or a violent battle is a conflict.

The confrontation is often brutal,

and you often hear the word conflict used.

A confrontation might be made in the form of a threat.

You might threaten someone

so you don't argue.

There is no conflict.

But instead you make a threat.

You do something because you want that situation to stop.

It is a form of confrontation.

So you might threaten someone.

Maybe you threaten them with

some sort of legal action

You threaten someone.

You make a threat.

Maybe you go round to your neighbour's house

and you say, if you don't stop making noise,

if you don't stop doing that,

you might make a physical threat.

It does happen.

A confrontation might be a way of settling a dispute or argument.

So let's look on the bright side.

Let's look on the positive side of things.

Confrontation is not always negative.

There can be a positive outcome.

Confronting a situation,

maybe two people who want to talk about a thing.

And maybe both of those people are annoyed or upset.

But when they start talking, they realise

that the problem is not as bad as they thought.

Or maybe they are able to come to a solution

So sometimes confrontation

might be a way of settling a dispute

or ending an argument

So it is not always a bad thing.

So what about you?

From my own point of view, I have to be honest.

I'm not always brave when it comes to confrontation.

I don't like it sometimes.

I don't like to complain or object to something.

Maybe in certain situations, especially in social situation,

because you always worry about what other people will think.

Maybe if you are eating a meal

and the food isn't very good

maybe you don't want to complain because you don't want to be that person.

You don't want to be the person that complains

so you don't.

So what about you?

And it can be anything.

Maybe a person who has been annoying you or a person

who has been doing something that you don't like

and you want to confront them.

However,

you don't,

you just keep it to yourself.

You want to say something, but

you just keep it to yourself.

Sometimes there are arguments.

There is no such thing as a perfect relationship.

Sometimes there is conflict disagreement

even in the best relationships.
