Because we hate them so much.

They are stinky.

They are horrible.

They are like a pair of underpants

that have been worn for two months without taking them off.

will make your Monday a little bit brighter.

For those who aren't aware.

Well, first of all, my name is Duncan.

I talk about the English language.

I like English quite a lot.

You might say that I am crazy about English.

You might even say that I am an English addict, you see?

And I have a feeling that maybe, perhaps you are one of those as well.

Yes. During the month of April, I'm doing a special series

of live streams almost every day.

Of course, normally I'm with you on Sunday and Wednesday,

but this particular month,

almost every day except Saturday.

So think of every day of the week.

But then take off Saturday

and that's it.

That is basically my schedule.

We talked about lots of different things, including words

and phrases connected to the word slap.

And can you believe how many there were?

It is strange and I suppose

also fascinating that in the English language there are many words

that seem quite innocent and uninteresting.

But actually, when you start to to look closer

at those words, you realise that they are rather fascinating.

It really does leave you feeling quite

exhausted, wiped out.

I often feel wiped out.

Completely exhausted,

not only on Sunday evening after

finishing my live stream, but also on Monday.

Normally. Quite often on Monday.

I'm going to let you in on a secret.

Sometimes on Monday morning I will stay in bed

till quite late, maybe midday or 1:00.

I know it's very naughty of me, but yes, it it does.

Doing a two hour live stream does exhaust you.

I find that it wipes me out

Maybe it's my age.

I don't know. It might be. It might not.

The garden is looking rather nice today, and there it is.

People always like to see the garden.

And also there you can see some detail of some of the plants

And also we have some beautiful lavender that is now coming out.

I used to go to to school with a girl

The beginning of the week always means that people have lots of things to do.

I I often think of people who work in offices,

to sort out things that have to be done?

Maybe things that have been left on your desk

or your inbox.

Because, of course, nowadays most people

follow their work routine or do their work on a computer.

So maybe you will go to your your inbox

on your computer and there will be lots and lots of things,

lots of messages that have to be read and things that must be done

because over

the weekend, lots of things have come through.

One thing I do know is Steve

quite often gets lots of stuff

in his inbox on Monday morning.

So normally Steve has to spend many hours or well,

I suppose two or 3 hours in the morning on Monday,

going through all of the emails and all of the messages, all of the Zoom meetings.

That's the big thing now.

That's the big thing that many people are doing.

They're all having Zoom meetings.

I think Monday is the day of the week that most people hate.

Most people dislike Mondays.

A lot of people tend to moan on Monday.

Today we are looking at time.

Time.

Time is one of those interesting things.

We often need to express.

Time in a certain way.

Maybe the day of the week may.

Maybe the day of the month.

Maybe the time of the year.

There are many ways of expressing time.

Also, there are many ways of writing time down

if we are going to express time in writing.

There are many ways of doing it.

Also, there are many ways of measuring time as well.

What is the difference between time and distance?

It's an interesting question.

We might not answer it today,

but I still think it's a very interesting question.

So those things are coming up a little bit later on.

What do you normally have to do on Mondays?

Of course.

I suppose there is one thing that I am forgetting

and that's

that some people have to work at the weekend.

For example, Florence says for me

it is better to watch you during the week because every weekend I have to go to work.

So it is very easy to forget that there are people who have to work at the weekends

So maybe watching me on Sunday is not as convenient.

So yes, that is a good point and it is very easy to forget that I think so.

Claudia says, I have many things to do today, but here I am watching you.

But afterwards I will be very busy

to return to their offices.

Yes, this has happened here in the UK as well.

In England, of course, all of the restrictions have now been removed.

Everything Compulsory testing, free

testing, all of that has come to an end.

So you might say

I am, of course, keeping my my fingers crossed

very tightly.

You might say that here everything has almost gone back to normal.

However, as you mentioned, there are people

who don't want to go back to the office.

They've had the sensation,

they've had the experience of working from home.

And I think many people have realised

it's quite nice working from home.

And they don't want to go back.

They would rather work from home than go back to the office.

Many people in the morning, they have to drive, maybe for one

or 2 hours to get to work.

They have to sit in traffic to get to work.

But during the lockdown many people who did that

have been staying at home and I think quite a few people have realised

it's much easier

You can still do your work, you can still do your job,

but you don't have all of the inconvenience of travelling to the office.

So I think that might be one of the reasons, not just because of the health reasons,

because there are still people who are concerned with the situation

concerning coronavirus, COVID

19, whatever you want to call it.

So there are still people who are concerned about it

but also I think

it is because a lot of people have had the taste,

they've had the taste of working from home

and they don't want to go back

to the old way of doing it.

Maybe it's true.

Maybe it's not.

There were some rather strange moments of time,

see what happened towards the end of yesterday's live stream?

Something that I've never done before and I will never do again.

Time goes by slowly, but passes quickly.

Yes, I think time is

sometimes an illusion.

Now, I don't mean from that.

I don't mean that it's not real.

But I do mean that sometimes the speed

or how quickly time goes by seems to change.

Of course it doesn't.

It's all up here in your brain.

The way you process things, the way you.

You understand the passage of time.

Your understanding and also the feeling.

The sensation of time passing by.

Maybe if you have nothing to do.

Time goes by slowly.

Maybe if you are busy and you have a busy life.

Lots of things to do.

Maybe the day seems to go quickly.

Maybe time seems to go by quickly.

However,

whatever your perception of time is,

you often find that it always seems to go by quickly

when you are looking at the days of the week or the months of the year.

It always seems as if time is going by quickly,

especially when you get older.

I don't know why.

When I was a child, the summer months seemed like forever.

And I don't know why.

Summer always seemed incredibly long.

It seemed to go on forever,

but now the seasons seem to come and go very quickly.

Summer then winter and suddenly it's spring.

And then suddenly it's autumn.

And then suddenly it's spring again.

It comes around very quickly.

So sometimes I think time does appear to go slowly.

However, overall, when you look at the days

and the months and the years,

suddenly you realise that time actually goes by quickly.

Especially as you get older

we've sort of we've sort of had a leap in time.

We've we've had a quantum leap

Who remembers that TV show?

Do you remember Quantum Leap?

I used to like Quantum Leap.

Steve doesn't like it because he doesn't like Scott Bakula.

He doesn't like him.

He says, I don't like Scott Bakula.

I don't like him, but I like Quantum Leap.

Dr. Sam Beckett.

He stepped into the Quantum Leap Accelerator and vanished.

And each time, he was hoping

that his next leap would be the Leap home.

But it wasn't.

He just vanished into thin air.

One of the most disappointing endings ever

to a TV show was the last ever episode of Quantum Leap.

He just vanishes at the end, and that's it.

We never find out what happens to him.

It does.

It made me so angry.

I can say it was a great series. Yes.

I used to like it all the time.

I used to love watching it.

Very interesting programme.

Was I going somewhere with this?

I think we've all had

a quantum leap into the future.

So the ways in which we were working during the lockdown period,

I think that is how we would be working

maybe five or ten years from now.

So I think what's

happened is we've sort of gone forward in time

with the way we we work and the way we do our jobs.

So I think this would have happened anyway.

But what happened when the pandemic came?

Everyone had to work from home and suddenly all of that technology

that was around, suddenly it was put to a different use.

And that's what I think has happened.

So imagine going forward in time, ten years from now,

we would be working

the way we are working out I hope you understand that.

It makes sense to me anyway.

Have you ever been stuck for words?

Have you ever been in a situation where you could not think what to say?

There are many ways of describing this occurrence.

We can say that you are tongue tied.

You have been left speechless.

You are stuck for words.

You cannot find the words to express yourself.

Your mind has gone blank.

There are many reasons why you might find yourself unable to speak.

Perhaps you are in a state of shock or surprise.

An unexpected event can leave you speechless.

The surprise can be a nice thing, or it can be something

not so nice, such as bad news.

If you are giving a speech to a group of people, you might find

that your brain suddenly stops working.

You become nervous and cannot remember what to say.

I am ever so sorry.

My mind has gone blank.

After a sudden surprise, you might only be able

to say I'm speechless.

You have become tongue tied and stuck for words.

If you try to remember the thing you wanted to mention, you might say

It's on the tip of my tongue.

A continuing debate in

English usage is the question of when to use who

and when to use whom, according

to formal grammar, who forms the subjective case

and so should be used in subject position in a sentence

as in who decided this?

The form whom, on the other hand, forms the objective case

and so should be used in object position in a sentence as in.

Whom do you think we should support?

To whom do you wish to speak?

Although there are some speakers who still use who and whom, according to the rules of formal grammar.

As stated here, there are many more who rarely use whom at all

its use has retreated steadily

and is now largely restricted to formal contexts.

The normal practise in modern English is to use who instead of whom,

and where applicable to put the preposition at the end of the sentence.

language

So when you go to work on the way to work, it takes you two and a half hours

and when you come back from work,

it takes another two and a half hours

I used to do the same thing many years ago

when I used to work in town,

and sometimes I would work in other towns that I had to commute to

and quite often by train because I don't drive.

I don't have a car.

I didn't in the past and I still don't.

So I've never learnt to drive.

To be honest with you, I never done it.

So I used to have to commute sometimes using two

or sometimes three trains,

and it would take me a very long time to get to work.

And I have to be honest with you.

I would never return to those days.

I do quite like working from home.

That is one of the wonderful things about computers and technology People complain about it.

They say, I hate computers so much.

I have a feeling over the past couple of years a lot of people have fallen in love

with computers and technology because without them

we would not have been able to stay at home to do our jobs.

And also, maybe in some cases

you might find that your company or the or the company you work for,

they might decide that that is the best thing

for you to just work from home forever.

I imagine that.

So I do like that particular situation.

Well, there are a lot of negatives, I suppose.

It depends how you look at it.

There are negatives and positives to everything, I suppose.

Eric says as a side effect of this pandemic time,

I was affected by salary reduction.

A lot of people had to stop working.

Maybe if you were working at a shop or a restaurant,

of course they were told that they couldn't stay open.

Just like here, it happened here.

Lots of people suddenly found that not only did they have no work to go to.

They also had no salary, no wages.

So the government here decided to give people money.

It sounds great,

but unfortunately that money has to come from somewhere.

So I'm sure over the next few years we will be paying that money back.

So a lot of people, not me.

I didn't I didn't I decided not to claim any money from the government,

but lots of people who had lost their jobs

or were not receiving any salary,

they were able to claim money from the government

whilst they were on furlough.

So if you take furlough, it means it is time that you take

from work that has been agreed.

being a dentist,

you have to you have to get very close to people

and I have recently started going to the dentist again

because the dentist here in much Wenlock was closed.

It closed down during the pandemic,

but recently it has reopened.

So I think it was around January,

January, they started seeing people again.

And in fact, I have

I've just realised I have a dentist appointment

this month on the 22nd.

So on the 22nd of April I will be going to the dentist

for a Check-Up to check that my teeth are not falling out

Palmieri says we do not need masks anymore in shops,

but it is still required on public transport.

Yes, that is what we were doing up

until a few days ago and now everything has stopped.

So now you don't have to wear a mask anywhere.

The only place that you probably still have to do it

is if you go into a doctor's surgery.

So if you go to see the doctor, I think you still have to wear a mask

and if you go into the pharmacy

to pick up some medicine, you have to wear your mask.

And of course, when I go into the dentist,

so when I visit the dentist, I have to wear my mask

until

the dentist asks me to open my mouth wide

and then I take my mask off

So if you go to a place where there might be people who are vulnerable, maybe they are ill,

maybe a place where people are being taken care of,

for example, a care home so maybe a care home

that is taking care of elderly people,

a very similar to a place where my mother is at the moment.

So she is being taken care of there as well.

We are now going to talk about time.

I think time is an interesting thing and what I want to do

today is talk about expressing the date,

a very small thing.

I know it might not seem very important, but expressing the date.

There are different ways of expressing the date.

And by that I mean the order in which

the day, the month appear.

So sometimes they are one way round

and in other cases they are the opposite way round.

I would explain now.

So quite often when we express the date,

we often put the date, the month and the year.

So when I say date, I mean the number.

The number.

So the date is actually the number.

So you put the number, then the month, then the year.

However, there are also situations

where you might put the month first

and then the number or the date and then the year.

And I will show you an example.

Now, for example, you can have the 4th of April,

2022, the 4th of April.

So the fourth is the number.

April is the month and of course followed by the year.

However, it is also possible to express the date

the other way round, you can say April 4th,

20, 22,

and there is a reason for that which I will explain

a little bit later on

And also there are ways of expressing the dates as well.

And I'm going to give you some examples because quite often people get them wrong

when they are writing them down and you can see how I've written them on the screen.

You can see them written down just underneath my lovely face.

You have the first, second, third, fourth,

fifth, sixth seventh, eighth, ninth,

10th.

So they are all expressed in a certain way

and if you want to use the actual writing,

well, I've done that for you.

You have the first and you can see

at the end of each word, you can see that I've marked

the end of those words with red and there is a reason for that.

And you will see that the end of each of those words

is what you abbreviate the date to.

For example, today is the fourth,

and you can see that the fourth ends with T-H,

which is basically what we do here.

And that is the reason why, because they come

at the end of each of those words like that.

So remember in the

United States, so if you are writing with American English,

it is worth noting that the month will always come first

and then the number and then the year.

However, if you are writing using British English,

quite often here we will put the day

or the number first.

So the date or the number and then the day and then the year.

And that is the reason why if you look just above my head, you can see there,

that is the reason why we write

the 4th of April 20, 22,

because we always put the number first

and then the month the number and then the month

and then American English, it will be expressed

the other way round

And when we are talking about

time, the passage of time, or maybe how often

something happens, there are some words that we can

use as well for example, we can say annual

something that is annual is yearly.

So one year is annual

from the beginning of the year to the end of the year or 12 months cycle.

So each time the year changes to the next number

that is annual yearly.

So maybe an event that happens once a year.

We can describe it as annual, and then you have bi annual,

which is every two years.

We can also express decade.

Decade means ten years.

So each ten years is a decade

Every time ten years passes by,

we can say that a decade has passed.

We can also use decade to express each of the ten years.

For example, the ten years between

2000 2010.

Or of course some people are going to say, Actually, Mr.

Duncan, it's 2000 to 2009.

Thank you very much for that.

And then you have century.

Century normally refers to 100.

So in this situation, century refers to 100 years.

And then we have millennium.

Millennium is 1000 years.

And then we can talk about

something that always blows my mind.

Something that Mr. Steve mentioned yesterday.

In fact last year

one light year,

a lot of people believe that light year is a measurement of time, but it isn't.

It's actually distance.

So when we talk about light years, we are talking about the distance between one thing and another.

And to calibrate that

to work out what that actually is, that distance

we use, the time that it takes for light

to travel from one place to another.

Which I believe is around about

well, it's around about 5.8 billion miles.

So that's a long way.

So when we talk about light years we are talking about

very large distances indeed.

Incredibly large.

So you might say this, a light

year is a year because it takes one year.

Can you imagine that?

One year for light to travel from one place to another?

So one moment of time, one moment of light

it has to travel

all that distance

But that is the reason why

a lot of people tend to confuse those two things.

They often confuse light year

between time and distance,

but normally it is distance.
