Are you obsessed with the way you look?

Do you often think about your appearance?

I know I do.

Sometimes I become very worried about my appearance.

I think sometimes that I can see

my my age

I can see it.

In the past when I was young,

I was self-conscious about my body, but for different reasons.

So as you get older, maybe your your reasons

for becoming unhappy about your looks will change.

So now, of course, I have old age and as we all know,

as we get older, our face will start to become wrinkly.

Our skin will change.

Already I can see things happening to my neck.

I have this strange thing that happens sometimes to my neck, especially when I'm looking

in the mirror in the morning and I can see something just for a brief moment.

I can see something that looks different

maybe I'm cleaning my teeth or having a shave.

And then for a few moments I think, what was that?

What was that on my face?

What was that on my neck?

Something something looks different.

And I know what it is.

I'm using my beautiful looks,

my twinkle is beginning to fade.

from one of my lessons that I did all about that actual subject.

This is a lesson all about image because today

we are talking about one particular word

in the English language, and that word is

vanity.

In our day to day

lives, image plays an important role

when we are out shopping for fresh food,

we are constantly judging the image of what we are looking at.

A Red Apple might look better than a green one,

a tomato with its stalk and the leaves

attached may look fresh to the image

of even the most simple thing can alter the way we see it.

Of course, what is pleasing to one

person may not be so to another.

This is why offering more choice to shoppers is a common one.

You can buy some fresh tomatoes or

pick up some that have been put in a can.

More choice means more customers

we often see image as being a real thing.

The thing we look at has an image.

It leaves an impression on us,

but image can also exist in the mind.

We can imagine anything.

Your imagination allows you

to free

albeit in a dreamlike way.

Creativity tends to come from this imaginary process,

so the power of imagery is a force, for one,

be it right in front of your eyes or appear in your mind.

And there are many moments in your life

where the way you look and how you show yourself to others is important.

For example, when you are attending

job interviews while looking for work,

you need to make sure that the image you are

projecting is a positive one.

There is a strong belief that first impressions are the most important ones.

So it is crucial to make sure that the first impression you make on the person

who could end up being your employer is a good one.

A smart and tidy appearance can go a long way

There is a saying

in English Beauty is only skin deep

This means that the outward appearance of a person

does not give a complete picture of what they are like.

It is what lies deep down in a person's character that is important.

Also, it is worth remembering that beauty

is in the eye of the beholder.

What might seem attractive to one person

may be completely repugnant or repulsive

Vanity refers to a person's self image.

So your vanity quite often is your own appearance.

Your thoughts, your feeling, your impression of your own appearance.

So we often look at vanity

as something that is referring to our selves,

our own appearance, the way we think we look.

Your self-image, as I mentioned, in the video

a few moments ago, your self-image is the way you see yourself

when you look in the mirror, when you walk down the road, the way you think

people see you, the people you meet every day, your friends.

Maybe you are a person who has to appear

in public and do public things like this.

Maybe you have to stand in front of a camera

and try your best to look beautiful.

The attitude towards one's look.

So quite often we are talking about the attitude,

the way we feel towards our own

appearance.

The attention to how one looks.

So when we talk about your own attention, we are talking

about your own attitude to the way you look.

So not just physically, but also in appearance.

So by that, the effect that we have

when we see ourselves, for example, in the mirror

I mentioned a few moments ago about the shock

that I feel sometimes when I'm looking at myself in the mirror

and maybe I notice something that has changed on my face.

Maybe a new wrinkle, maybe a new line.

to project yourself to other people when you are walking down the road,

when you are in a public place, if you are going somewhere special,

maybe you are going for a meal in a nice place, a nice restaurant

somewhere where you want to be seen

and hopefully admired

Maybe you are trying to find a partner,

a girlfriend, boyfriend,

You are image conscious,

so you are very aware of the clothes

you wear and also the way you appear.

The self awareness of one's flaws.

This is it.

You see, I think most people, when they look in the mirror,

I'm sure we can all find something that doesn't look right.

Maybe something we wish we could change.

I used to be obsessed with my appearance,

one particular part of my body.

I used to be very self-conscious of when I was a child.

I used to hate my Adam's apple,

my larynx here in my neck.

Because it used to stick out.

In fact, it still does.

It's very obvious.

And when I was a teenager, around the ages, maybe

maybe 13 or 14 years old, you know what happens?

We all start to become more conscious of our bodies.

And I hate it my Adam's apple because I always thought it was too big.

And I still think it is, although these days

it doesn't bother me But when I was young, I used to hate it.

I used to dream of having an operation

to remove it or to make it less obvious.

But of course, unfortunately, you can't.

There are no operations.

There is no surgery that will take away your Adam's apple.

In fact, some men and some women

like to see a man with an Adam's apple

with a large larynx.

Some people think it's manly

little

I don't know about that.

But yes, I was often self-conscious about my body, my height.

I didn't like being tall.

I hated being tall at school and thin.

I was very thin when I was a child.

So my Adam's apple, my larynx would look even larger.

I hated it.

making themselves look beautiful.

but a narcissistic person,

a vain person is narcissistic.

And of course, we have another word.

They're vain in which is related to vanity.

So to be vain is to be obsessed

with your own appearance.

Beauty.

We often talk about beauty.

We often talk about glamour, fashion,

and all of these things quite often are linked

to beauty, beauty products,

fashion things that can make you look beautiful.

So beauty is the concept of image.

The concept of what is attractive

I know it's controversial

these days because over the last few years we have become more conscious

of the way in which people look and appear

of all shapes, sizes.

People

might not be attractive, or maybe they might not be attractive

to a certain person, but they might be very attractive to someone else.

So in the past, the ideal person would be one particular thing.

Slim, young, beautiful.

But these days that attitude has changed a lot.

And you will notice this quite often in fashion

when you see those glossy fashion magazines,

you will often see people of all shapes

and sizes in those magazine

So beauty is the concept of image.

The concept of what is attractive

And there are some great expressions, by the way.

This is one of my favourites

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

So the person who is looking, the person who is observing

is the one who decides

whether something is attractive or beautiful.

So the beholder is the one looking.

So you might see someone in a crowded room

or whilst walking down the high street in town, you might see someone

walking towards you and you think, oh,

that person is very beautiful.

Very beautiful, but that is what you find beautiful or attractive.

It might not be attractive

or that person might not be attractive to someone else.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The person who sees the thing the person,

the image in front of them.

So everyone has their own concept or their own idea.

Of what is good looking, attractive or beautiful

Another great expression.

Beauty is only skin deep.

Beauty is only skin deep.

It is on the surface.

It is what you see on the surface.

Beauty is

on the surface.

You don't really know what a person is like.

A person might be beautiful.

They might be the most beautiful person in the world, but it doesn't mean that they're a nice person.

And of course, as I mentioned earlier,

it's all very lovely being young and beautiful bursts

waiting just around the corner

Time is waiting to take all of that away.

So whatever you have underneath that beauty, your character,

the way you behave, the way you treat other people,

those things will become more important later in life.

As your beauty starts to fade,

it's a very important lesson

that many people learn too late, unfortunately.

So beauty is only skin deep.

It is just on the surface.

A person that only cares about someone's

appearance can be described as shallow.

A shallow person is someone who only cares

about the appearance of another person.

So maybe they think they have to be beautiful.

They have to have a certain

body shape a certain look,

and they judge that person based

entirely on their appearance.

So they don't care what the person is really like,

their character, all they care about is their appearance.

So maybe you meet a nice girl and she's very pleasant,

very friendly, but you don't find her completely attractive

because you want to find the perfect person, the perfect woman.

The perfect man.

You keep looking. You keep searching.

Where is she?

And you look
