But then after a while, something very strange happens and then you start to feel slightly unwell

and the cold starts to eat into

your body and I was really glad.

I have to be honest with you.

I was very pleased to get back home yesterday.

We've often done one on Christmas Eve

and we've often done one on Boxing Day, the day after Christmas.

However, something I wanted to talk about very briefly,

I think that people

are being much more cautious

and careful this year with how much money they spend on Christmas.

Definitely.

We've noticed already one thing that's happened, we have received

very few Christmas cards.

Three, hardly three, hardly any.

You know, when you get about 30 something.

So a lot of people this year are not sending Christmas cards.

And I think there are two reasons for that.

One, of course, is because people want to save money

and not do it because it can be expensive if you are buying lots of Christmas cards

and then you have to post them, you have to pay the postage.

But the other reason is I think a lot of people

this year, Steve, are making donations to charities.

Well, you see.

Are they, though?

And of course, we have a postal strike. Yes.

So I think a lot of people are sort of saying, oh, I'm not

they're using the excuse to say, oh,

I'm not going to send Christmas cards this year

because, you know, you might not receive that because of the postal strike.

Yeah.

So I'm going to give money to charity instead.

Of course, they never present any evidence.

So it does show you that they've put their money towards charity.

It's a bit rude, though, isn't it, to ask?

It's a bit of a copout.

So it's rude to ask them, Hey, you didn't send me a Christmas card.

You are going to have to prove that you sent that money to charity.

I need to see the receipts.

I think people I think people are,

because it's a very time consuming

event, if that's the right word.

It's very time consuming to write Christmas cards.

I always end up doing it in a state of semi stress

because, you know, sending about 30 Christmas cards,

you've got to you've got to write little messages in all of them. Yes.

And it takes a long time to put them in the envelopes

to put all the addresses on.

But the stamps on by the stamps go out.

Stamps are expensive and you have to post them and you have to post them and you have to do it

by a deadline.

But my point, the point I'm trying to make before we go right off the subject is

I think people are not spending so much money this year.

I think we are going to see this after the new year arrives.

I think a lot of shops are going to be saying

and reporting that they did not have a very good Christmas.

So I have a feeling lots of people are.

There's a great expression in English.

I'm sure you've heard of this, Steve.

You tighten your belt,

you pull your belt in to make it tighter.

And that means that you are trying to save money.

You don't want to spend so much money, so you are tightening your belts.

You are making everything become a little bit more restrictive,

which means you won't spend much money.

So that's.

Do you think that's where that phrase comes from?

Tightening is you restricting things

and it's when you don't you don't have food.

So what's the first thing that happens when you don't eat?

Well, I was going to I was wondering whether it meant that you lose weight.

So you talking about but are you tightening about as a metaphor

for another phrase, which is tightening monetarily?

So you're you're not spending so much money, so you're tightening your belt.

It what it did was just makes you don't spend so much money.

I just told you, I've already looked it up. Yes.

That's that time we've actually talked about this before, that's why.

So if you tighten your belts, you are actually pulling your belt in because you are not eating.

You are having to cut back on the things you spend money on.

And it's a great expression.

So I think I think that is one that a lot of people are going to

because it is a yes because of the increased cost of living

that we've all got to tighten our belts.

And therefore, it just means that you've got to you won't have so much money to spend on maybe presents.

Maybe people will spend money on the food. Hmm.

People are making choices, rational choices.

As you said to me earlier, Mr.

Duncan, if you've got so much money to spend, if that money is reduced because of energy bills going

up, etc., inflation, then you'll be spending money on food

presents, parties going out for meals.

Some of those you might have to cut down on.

Yes, Well, I think people are just cutting out things.

Well, they could be like Christmas cards is a good thing, but you don't cut out the food.

Well, that's it.

You see, I don't think people are cut down on the food That's probably the last thing they'll cut.

But I mean, you've got to eat, haven't you?

for meals, that's an easy one to save money on, isn't it?

So from the evidence I've seen going out for me as recently,

that doesn't seem to be stopping because everywhere we've been it's been fairly busy with people.

Well, I think it's the time of year.

Lots of companies, lots of people from work are going for Christmas meals.

So I think that's quite popular.

And sometimes, of course the company will pay

for that particular meal.

So you might still see people going to restaurants and having a good time

and perhaps that that company is paying for that particular thing.

As I said on Tuesday, the most important thing about Christmas, it's not gifts.

It's not Santa Claus, isn't it?

It's food.

I thought it was gifts.

No, food is always top of the list for me.

So so the presents are all very close.
