I don't know why, but everything at the moment is turning rather nice, even though we have a gloomy day.

You might say that I am an English addict, and I have a feeling maybe you are an English addict as well.

And of course, I suppose it is fair to say it would be fair to say that English has become popular.

It has now become a language that many people want to learn.

And of course, there are many ways of learning English.

You can read books, exercise books.

There are many great text books out there that can help you with your English.

But as far as I am concerned, from my point of view,

I think there is no substitute for the practical lesson.

So this is the type of thing that does more than teach.

It is creating an environment where you can listen to English.

And of course, because we have the live chat, you can also chat to other people as well.

So I think English is a good language.

It is rather super duper.

You know what it's like quite often these days?

I've noticed when you buy almost anything furniture, office equipment,

most things that are large quite often these days, you have to put them together yourself.

You have to assemble

the thing that you buy.

Of course, many years ago there was a company.

It still exists, the company is still around and they started making furniture that you had to put together yourself.

So you would buy lots of these large pieces of wood

and some very strange instructions,

and you would have to assemble the furniture yourself.

But I have noticed these days a lot of people

have difficulty putting things together.

Sometimes the instructions are not very clear, and quite often you will end up with a couple of pieces

that don't seem to go anywhere.

Does that ever happen to you? It's happened to me quite a lot.

Steve's new office chair is now working very nicely.

I just wish the person sitting in the chair was working nicely.

of studying, learning, and of course, absorbing those English words.

I think reading is a very good way

of learning.

Another good way, of course, is writing.

It would appear that more and more people these days do not write

by hand.

So we have become so used to typing and using our smartphones.

We it's almost as if the the art of writing has become almost out of date.

I think it is a very useful way of learning any language, because if you write something down

and I know I've said this before, you can use your brain in a very special way.

It is a very good way of putting information into your brain.

If you write because you are using your brain in a different way,

and it is a very good way of learning anything, to be honest.

Steve's gift is very useful.

Normally when I buy gifts for people, I do like those things to be useful.

So if I ever buy anything for Mr.

Steve for Christmas or his birthday, I always like to give him something useful

or something that every time he looks at it, or every time he uses it,

he will think of me.

Claudia says I have problems with my teeth as well, which is ironic when you think about it, because you are a dentist.

But I suppose even dentists will sometimes have problems with their teeth.

It's a bit like doctors.

You always think that doctors never become sick because they are doctors.

But of course, as we all know, everyone becomes ill at some point in time, including doctors as well.

So there are many things to talk about when we are discussing agreeing.

If you agree

to something or you agree

with something, maybe something a person says, maybe an opinion that they have,

quite often you will have a choice.

or disagree.

maybe a certain deal that is taking place quite often in business, when people are negotiating, they are talking.

They are trying to make a deal.

Quite often they will have to agree on certain things,

especially if you are going to sign a contract before you sign a contract.

There are many things in my life that I've never tried, things that I've never done.

Is there something in your life that you've never done?

Something you've never ever done?

However you would like to try it?

And that is the question I'm going to ask right now.

Is there something you have never done but you would like to try?

There are many things I've never done, many things I've never actually tried.

Perhaps a certain activity,

things I've never done.

I have never,

ever tried skiing.

Never, never done it

for two reasons.

One, I would be very afraid of falling over.

I would be really scared of falling down.

Maybe breaking something, maybe injuring myself.

But I've never, ever tried skiing.

It does look fun.

Don't get me wrong. It does look fun.

I would like to try it very much, but I don't feel as if it will be suitable for me.

I don't think I would be very good at it. I'm too tall.

I think the first thing I would do if I ever tried to ski,

and there are many parts of the world where you can go to ski,

France, the Alps, Italy, Switzerland.

There are many places around the world where you can ski.

You can go skiing.

Never tried it.

I've seen lots of people do it and I have to say it does look fun,

but I don't think I would be very good at it.

So I would like to do that.

I would like to try to ski, maybe in a controlled environment,

because nowadays, of course there are many places where you can ski indoors, artificial ski slopes.

So maybe that would be a good place to start.

Maybe I could do it.

But in a controlled environment, I certainly don't think I could do it.

Going down a ski slope with snow all around me.

I've seen many of your photographs of you skiing.

And this is one thing I have had had a wide experience of eating.

So because I've travelled to other countries, I've eaten lots of different types of food,

some unusual food as well.

So when you say walk in, do you mean something like a job interview?

That is something we all have to face, especially when we are young.

Quite often if you are trying to find work or find a job, or maybe you're applying to to attend university.

So quite often these days there are many situations where you might have to attend an interview.

So yes, I think that's what you mean.

Maybe walk in so you walk in and you will be greeted by someone, or sometimes more than one person.

I remember once I attended an interview for a job many years ago,

and I was expecting just one person to be there, but when I arrived.

Two people already, I felt pressure.

So from that point on, I was always prepared before I went in for an interview,

just in case.

Perhaps, maybe

there will be more than one person.

So I do think that it those types of situations can be intimidating.

I'm sure a lot of people would agree with me. Mr.

Duncan, the hardest thing you have to do is go for a job interview.

Something you have to do.

Now my advice for that is just to do it.

We all have to learn in a particular way, and I think

attending a job interview is something that you can't fully prepare for,

because there still might be things that the person will ask you, maybe a question they that you are not prepared for.

So my advice to anyone who has never been to an interview for a job,

well, maybe you are trying to attend a certain society or a group or a college.

Do it. Just do it.

We've all done this in the past.

I remember maybe 2 or 3 of my first ever interviews that I attended.

I know I wasn't very good, but sometimes, of course, that nervousness can help you as well.

Sometimes being a little unsure or a little nervous can actually make you come across as a real person.

So I think one of the worst things you can do if you go to an interview

is to look to confident, to.

Sure of yourself.

So it can be a bad thing.

I do think sometimes it is good to appear human. I think so.

That is something I've never done.

For those who have been watching for a long time, you will know I do not like water.

I am afraid of water.

I am not very good at swimming.

So going underwater would be something that I would find hard to do anyway.

But there was that that awful event where that submarine that was going down to take a close look at the Titanic.

Something really awful happened involving that.

I like looking at the water.

I like being near the water.

I like drinking water.

And sometimes I like bathing in water

in the bathroom,

but nowhere else.

I will definitely not be going underwater.

I like diving in the water.

That's something I couldn't do either, you see.

So maybe one day you will get the chance to do it.

But it doesn't look easy.

It doesn't look like something that is easy to do.

To be honest.

may have its risks.

I don't know why I never.

I never feel comfortable.

Whenever I see a helicopter.

I always feel as if maybe something bad is about to happen to it.

So no, I don't think I would ever go up in a helicopter.

One thing I would like to do probably

is go up in a small aeroplane.

Now, around here where I live, quite often we get lots of aeroplanes coming over because very near to where I live.

There is a place where lots of planes take off from a small airport,

not very big, but they normally have light aircraft taking off and landing there.

So quite often we do have lots of small aircraft going over

and sometimes we have really big ones going over as well.

But that is another story.

So when it comes to food, I think I've tried almost all types of food, all types, even foods that I didn't like.

I've tried it and then I've realised that I don't like it.

So most food that I don't like, I have at some point tried it, and so I am sure that I definitely don't like it.

So again, I've never been to Japan.

So sushi is raw fish, uncooked.

So you eat it normally with rice, or normally it is arranged on a plate.

And there are many places where you can go, especially in London.

In London they have lots of sushi bars as well.

And quite often the meals will come around,

they will go past and then you can just take the meal that you want.

But I've never tried sushi.

I think the only time I've eaten a raw fish was when we were in Paris, and we did have raw salmon,

and I have to say it was quite nice.

So that is the nearest I've ever been to eating raw fish or sushi.

I did have some salmon once and that was rule.

It was okay. It was nice.

I probably wouldn't do it again, but it was okay.

But you are using it in your sentences.

Am I right? Yes.

Well, I would say, and this is something worth saying.

Helping verbs, doing, helping, giving advice.

Anything like that normally involves some sort of verbal use,

especially with certain topics.

So the topic I'm talking about there is there's something you've never done but like to try.

Then of course you will see there will be lots of occurrences of that type of speech.

But no, I would say

that we all have different ways of speaking.

The other day, by the way, I had somebody complain.

Someone the other day complained to me.

They said, Mr.

stop telling people to speak like you.

I did reply.

I said, I'm not telling people to sound like me.

I never have and I never will.

My job is to guide you.

I am your guide into the world of English.

I've never been there either.

One place I did go to in China was Tiananmen Square,

a huge place, very large place, and

they have a McDonald's as well.

There is a McDonald's in Tiananmen Square. And guess what? I actually went there

I've just realised

that is a very long time ago.

I don't think I have. We do have Indian food here.

But I have to say, a lot of the Indian food that we have here in the UK is not the same

as the real Indian food that is served in India.

I have to say, quite often the recipes and the way in which these things are cooked can be very different indeed.

So there are many things that we could try.

Maybe you won't like it.

Maybe it is something that you won't enjoy, but at least you tried it.

I've never done a Ted talk.

Have you ever seen a Ted talk?

They've been around for many years and lots of people enjoy watching them.

People take part in them.

And of course, over the years, Ted talks have become really, really popular.

And I would love to do one of those.

Maybe not the big ones, because I don't think they would accept me,

but maybe one of the smaller Ted talks I believe they are called Ted X.

So Ted x

seminars or talks or where people give maybe lessons or lectures about certain topics.

So I've never done one of those, but I would love to have a go.

Maybe one day have a try at giving a Ted talk

how successful it would be.

I'm not sure I personally

think I would be quite good at doing it, to be honest.

Because when you think about it, life

to do the things that they want to do or to follow their dreams.

So I think personally, personally,

a life coach is there to give you motivation

or to give you encouragement to to give you that feeling of self-belief,

which I suppose is a good thing when you think about it.

agreeing, allowing something to happen.

Maybe if you are agreeing to an opinion or maybe you are agreeing to a proposal.

Maybe in business, quite often they will be agreements taking place.

There will be things that have to be said and discussed before.

An agreement takes place.

To show one's approval or enjoyment of something.

Quite often you will give your approval or your enjoyment will be expressed in a positive way.

So I suppose it's obvious to some of you that if you enjoy something, then you like it.

You agree with that thing to show one's approval or enjoyment of something, to express agreement on a thing planned.

So a game, maybe a friend of yours makes a suggestion.

Shall we go somewhere this weekend?

Shall we do something different tonight? Would you like to come with me

on the trip

to Paris to meet Mr. Duncan?

And you will either agree

or disagree.

You will say yes. Sure. No problem.

Or you will say no. Thank you. I don't wish to do that.

We often express a positive reaction so as to avoid any misunderstanding.

Sometimes you have to be clear

with your response how you feel about something.

I think it's one of the most important things when we talk about human needs communicating with each other.

Sometimes it is very important to be clear on what

your opinion is, how you feel about that thing, whether you agree or disagree.

Sometimes it is very important to be clear with your feeling

to be sure that one's reaction is clear.

Quite often we have to show that we agree with something we like something or the opposite.

A positive

response is to agree or concur

with someone.

The word concur is an interesting word and you will hear it used quite a lot.

Normally, if people are discussing a certain thing, maybe there is a debate taking place,

or maybe one person is making a suggestion or a comment and the other person will concur.

For example, in a sentence, we concur with your decision.

That means we agree with your decision.

We accept what you say.

Concur can also relate to things occurring at the same time.

So it is interesting when we look at this particular word, if two things are happening at the same time, we can also say they concur.

They coincide.

Two things are happening together.

For example, in a sentence, his birthday concurred with his graduation.

They both came at the same time.

They happened together

to concur.

Concur derives from the Latin word for role, along with.

We might describe something as concurrent, something concurrent.

You are describing a thing that is happening at the same time is something else.

Sometimes when a person has done something wrong, they will be sentenced to jail

So a jail term or jail time.

And sometimes maybe they have to serve two sentences.

Quite often referring to a type of deal or something you have to agree on

before you sign a contract or make a contract,

a tough deal or proposal will often be negotiated.

So quite often you will have to discuss.

You will have to talk about something before you agree.

There are many ways to express agreement.

Those involved will agree that you reach an agreement.

So when you think about reaching an agreement, you come to a point where both sides agree.

They agree on a certain thing.

Agreement

might be described as mutual.

Both sides

agree

an opinion or point of view might be agreed with.

So perhaps you are discussing a hot topic

politics. Perhaps.

Maybe you are discussing a certain situation happening in in the world somewhere.

You might discuss that thing with your friend.

Perhaps you will see

eye to eye.

You agree with each other.

So one person might have an opinion and the other person will agree.

You both agree on that particular thing.

You have a very similar opinion.

You might verbally express agreement.

There are many ways of expressing agreement.

Verbal Lee to say something that shows you agree.

You might say

that's fine, that's fine.

Would you like to meet me tomorrow at 2:00 outside the local library?

Yeah. That's fine. That's fine. No problem. I agree.

You might say that's good.

That's good. No problem.

That's fine. That's good.

That's okay.

No problem.

To agree with something you express your acceptance of something.

No problem.

Again, very simple.

It's a simple reply, but it is incredibly clear.

No problem. It is no problem.

Of course you can use a single word.

Sure, sure.

No problem.

To be positive.

To be absolutely sure of something.

You agree?

You accept that thing.

And of course, you might simply say, great.

Great.

No problem. I tell you what.

You are going along with the suggestion.

Once again, to verbally express agreement.

I can go along with that.

I can go along with it. No problem.

So you are saying that you agree to that thing?

I have no problem with that.

Sounds good to me.

A suggestion.

Something said maybe an offer.

Perhaps you are selling your car.

Maybe you are saving some money. Maybe you want to buy a new car.

So you decide to sell your car.

Maybe the person comes around and perhaps you want £500 for the car.

But they offer

£450.

Does that sound good?

Sometimes when you are selling a certain thing, you have to negotiate a price.

I have to say I'm not very good at doing that.

I am not good at making a bargain.

I am terrible at doing that.

Sounds good to me.

I know you want £500 for the car, but I've noticed it does need a lot of work doing to it.

So I tell you what I'm going to do.

I'm going to offer you £450.

And you might think, okay,

maybe, maybe 500 is too much.

Maybe I am asking for too much money.

So instead, yes.

£450.

That sounds good to me.

You agree?

Once again, verbally expressing agreement.

I accept.

I agree to that.

Maybe a suggestion.

Maybe before you sign a contract, a person will tell you what you have to do.

You have to agree to something that it has been suggested to you.

That sounds fair to me.

Okay. That's okay.

I accept what you say.

I accept the terms of your contract.

You might also physically

express agreement quite often.

And I know I've made a lesson all about this body language

is very important in certain situations, especially where you are trying to make a decision.

Maybe a person is explaining something to you and you have to make a decision.

You have to show that person how you feel.

So if you agree with something, quite often you will smile.

Smiling.

It's a very good way of showing that you are happy with a certain situation or with a suggestion.

Yeah. Okay. No problem.

Let's do it.

You smile in agreement.

Of course. In business.

And this is something that still happens.

A lot of people do whenever they make an agreement in business, quite often they will

shake hands.

A handshake is a sign of trust.

So when two people come to an agreement, especially in business

or quite often in politics as well, you will often see people shake hands.

A handshake.

It is still something done quite often in business.

Normally, just after two people have reached an agreement.

You might physically express agreement by celebrating.

I know this sounds weird. I know you're going to say, Mr. Duncan.

That sounds very strange, but you might agree with someone and then celebrate that agreement once again in business quite often.

If you sign a contract,

if you agree, maybe to join together with another company, maybe two companies are going to join together and you agree

to do that.

You might celebrate.

So quite often we we will celebrate an agreement,

maybe a dispute or an argument between two countries.

Maybe they suddenly find peace.

They come

to an agreement.

You might have a celebration because of that.

The most common, and a lot of people think that this is very common.

To agree on something.

You might give a thumbs up.

So quite often, normally in a situation that is not too serious.

So normally in serious situations you won't normally do this

because it looks a little too casual.

It looks as if you're not taking it seriously.

But if you are excited about doing something, if you are really happy

about someone's suggestion, you might show that you are happy by doing this. Yes.

Let's do it. Yes. Let's go there.

You are agreeing by giving a thumbs up?

Of course.

One of the most common ways of showing that you agree, especially in a situation where one person is talking.

So maybe you are watching a performance on stage, and maybe someone is talking about a certain subject.

Or maybe two people are having a debate

on stage and there is an audience watching.

Quite often agreement will be shown.

By applause, through clapping.

Yes. I have to say yes.

Yes I, I agree with that. Yes. That's a, that's a very good, very good idea.

Yeah I, I agree.

You applaud.

You will show your agreement by clapping.

So generally speaking when we are talking about coming to an agreement or trying to agree on something

normally, especially in business, you will normally have a plan, then you will negotiate.

That normally involves lots of talking, lots of meetings.

Sometimes you can negotiate very quickly.

Sometimes it takes a long period

to negotiate before you will actually agree.

And then of course, eventually, hopefully

you will agree.

You will meet, you will discuss and hopefully you will agree.

Of course, there is the opposite.

You might disagree as well.

You might also disagree.

To agree could also be stated as reaching an understanding.

If you reach an understanding, it means both

groups understand each other.

They both have things that they want.

They have. They both have things they need.

And sometimes those things can be different.

So you have to reach an understanding.

Again, a very interesting phrase.

It is a pity

that more people around the world can't reach an understanding of each other.

Then we have the opposite.

Of course we have the opposite to not agree.

You might disagree.

You reject.

You object.

You push away something.

You dismiss that thing, something you don't agree on or you don't agree with.

You reject it, disagree,

object,

push away or dismiss that thing.

You are not going to go along with that thing.

So if you don't go along with something, it means you don't agree with it.

If you don't reach an agreement, that means you can't continue.

If you can't agree with someone, then the conversation will come to an end very quickly

to be of opposite views.

So quite often if you are discussing a certain topic, sometimes you will.

Disagree.

And moving on.

Because I've just realised good dismay. Is it really 3:10 already?

My goodness.

Figuratively.

You will give something the thumbs down.

So quite often we won't use

the physical sign.

So very rarely do you see people do this.

I don't know why, but normally we don't do this.

However, we will often express thumbs down verbally.

Did they agree to your offer? No.

They gave it the thumbs down.

Unfortunately, they gave my suggestion the thumbs down.

So we are using the phrase verbally rather than physically.

The Romans,

the Roman Emperor.

Shall I give you the thumbs up?

Which means you live.

Or shall I give you the thumbs down?

Which means?

Well, I think you know what it means.

Of course, if you are trying to agree, sometimes you can't reach an agreement.

Two people, or maybe a group of people might have to agree

to disagree.

So the thing you agree on is to not agree.

You can't reach an agreement.

Sometimes it is hard if you are talking to another person.

Sometimes you can't reach an agreement.

So instead you will agree to disagree.

If you disagree with someone, it means you have the opposite thought or the opposite feeling.

You do not accept that thing.

So sometimes again, when we are talking about world politics, quite often people will sit down.

They will talk, they will discuss, and maybe they find it hard to reach an agreement.

Sometimes being unable to agree will mean that a stalemate has been reached.

So, as you can see from that picture, quite often stalemate is used in chess

regarding a situation where a certain piece on the chessboard can't be moved.

That's it. You can't move.

Nothing else can happen.

The play cannot continue.

The game cannot go on because you have reached stalemate.

Negotiations have stopped.

You cannot reach an agreement,

which happens quite a lot.

We can't always agree with each other.

In every relationship,

even if you are married to someone.

Quite often it is very hard to always agree.

Sometimes you must agree to disagree.

And that is the subject. A very big subject.

By the way, you can agree to something.

If it has been suggested did to you something that is offered, you will agree to that.

If you agree with something, quite often it means you share

the same opinion.
