today in the uk well when i say the uk i mean england so the uk is lots of

different places combined however today in england we are now

all required to wear face masks all the time

even when we're sleeping even if we're on the toilet

even if we're taking a shower we have to wear

our face masks so now it is mandatory however it turns out

that you don't have to wear your face mask everywhere

so this new rule that has been introduced today

is actually rather confusing to be honest it is a little

bit confusing but yes you may have read in the newspaper or on the internet here

in england we have to now start wearing our face

mask everywhere we go however

to be honest with you i don't think i need to wear my face mask here

because there is a nice piece of thick glass

between us we don't have to worry about it isn't that nice

so here we go again we are back together from

we all have to wear our face masks we have no choice

wherever we are going if we are in the shops in the street

if we are near other people we must wear our face masks

one of the problems of course is if you wear your face mask

with glasses like me you often find that your glasses will steam up

they will mist up or fog you won't be able to see where

you're going because of the condensation from your breath

so that is one of the problems with wearing a face mask

during this particular period of time so if you are in a shop you must now

wear one of these on your face however

there are some exceptions for example if you are in a restaurant

you don't have to wear one of these because you can't eat

with a face mask you see you can't eat if you are wearing one of these

how are you going to get the food into your mouth

so if you are on public transport yes you need a mask if you are in the

supermarket yes you need a mask

if you are walking along the street maybe in a busy town center where there

are lots of other people yes you must wear a mask

so there are some places where you must wear it and

some places where you don't have to wear it however

apparently the rules are slightly confusing for some people

it is rather confusing to say the least so we are here yes

we've made it all the way to the end of the week

some people don't sometimes british humour

can be very subtle very dry so dry humour is something that is

given or delivered in a certain way so sometimes british humour can

appear very dry

talking of humour we are going to talk about british humour in a few moments

something that might be offensive or upsetting

so what we are talking about now is british humour when we think about

british humour what are we actually talking about

so what is british humour and how can we describe it well there

are many ways of describing british humour and i'm going to show you some

words and also show you some things as well on the

screen some of these things are a little bit

naughty so if you have any children nearby

i suggest you cover their eyes and their ears

in fact take them out of the room completely

and put them somewhere else

so when we think about british humour humour of course is

anything that makes you laugh a certain type

of story or joke with a humorous ending so british

humour when we think of british humour and when i think of it i often think of

words like bawdy and vulgar bawdy

and vulgar interesting words i know but when we think of things

that are related to british comedy one one person i often think of is benny

hill to be honest i always think of benny

hill when i think of british humour now

so many years ago people stopped showing his programs on television because

a lot of people thought well maybe it's not very

is hard to avoid that so when we think of british humour we

often think of things that are saucy and suggestive

maybe a little bit rude or naughty

for example so here we go here is a postcard

and on this postcard there is something rather rude

and suggestive you can see there is a couple

having a picnic by a bush and someone on the other side of the

bush is listening to what they are saying

and the girl is saying to her boyfriend let's have it now fred before it goes

soft now you see they are talking about the

ice cream however it might also have

another meaning as well which we will be looking at

a little bit later so when we talk about british humour quite often

it is humor that is suggestive or saucy a little bit

naughty when you go on holiday quite often you will see

postcards and many of them will have this sort of joke

on the front of them naughty suggestive jokes

so british humour quite often does refer to things that are naughty mischievous

maybe a little bit rude and sometimes misunderstandings as well you might

talk about misunderstandings or maybe things that can be taken

in different ways have you ever heard of a double entendre a double

entendre sometimes pronounced double duble entendre which literally means

double meaning so an entendre is the meaning

a double meaning sometimes when you say something a sentence maybe you mean one

thing however sometimes a sentence can be

taken in another way and yes once more british humour does rely

quite a lot on

misunderstandings or using words in more than one way and that is why we

have the double entendre or duble entendro

if you are french

by the way this is the old spelling before anyone criticises me

i know that this is old french this is old french i know it is but this is how

we spell it even now this is how we spell it before

anyone in france says mr duncan that is the old spelling

the old french spelling of entendre let's have a look i really don't want to

do this let's have a look at some double

entendres so these are things that you can say and

they are perfectly innocent however you can also give another

meaning to those sentences so here we go please

now all of these sentences look very

innocent however if you read them again they might also have another meaning

so there once again a double entendre quite common in british humour

we do like the double entendre maybe your neighbors next door are doing

some diy maybe they are repairing one of the

rooms or renovating part of the house

and maybe they are doing it until late at night

you might say my neighbors were banging all night

you see very innocent sentence that is an innocent sentence

my neighbors were busy next door they were making so much noise repairing

their house my neighbors were banging all night

you see double entendre that can mean something else as well you see

maybe you go to the doctor for an injection

your doctor has to give you an injection maybe in your

arm and perhaps you are slightly afraid so you say to the doctor oh i'm a little

bit worried about having the injection and then the

doctor replies you will only feel a small prick

maybe you are in the garden and you have some wood

that you need to chop up so you you get an axe you pick the ax up but

it is very big it's a very large axe very hard to hold in your hand

and you might say oh this chopper is too large to hold it's too large

it's too big i can't get my hand around this chopper again you see

double entendre british humour we love the double entendres in british

humor i hope you weren't offended by that

because it does exist and that is a very big part of what we call

traditional british humour we like to make jokes we like to give

things double meanings

so that is what the double entendre is i hope

i haven't offended anyone i hope i haven't offended anyone

sarcasm as well a lot of people say that british humor

good at being sarcastic saying something

to make a point saying something to make the other person

feel uncomfortable or unhappy you are putting someone down

you are saying something to belittle another person sarcasm so you might find

british humor as a little sarcastic some people accuse me

quite often quite often i am accused of being sarcastic some people say mr

duncan you are very sarcastic now i don't think

i am sarcastic sometimes my jokes might seem

sarcastic but i never like to hurt people with my humour

i like to think my humour is cheeky i like that word cheeky i will put that

on the chat cheeky

so when we think about cheeky something that is cheeky there it is

i've put it now on the live chat cheeky so cheeky humour

is humour that is given or used but you are not trying to hurt another

person cheeky so a lot of people accuse me

of being sarcastic but i think i am just cheeky my my humour

is cheeky a little bit naughty sometimes

you might do something that is naughty but not offensive not offensive

is a type of humour that is delivered or given

or done or carried out for a certain reason

so satire is a way of expressing an opinion about something

in a certain way you use humor for a certain purpose

very similar to sarcasm so some people do believe that satire

is very similar to sarcasm satire so when we say satire

we mean comedy or humor that is done for a certain purpose a

certain reason i remember growing up in the early 1980s

so during the 1980s there was a very funny

comedy show on tv here in the uk called spitting image

maybe you've seen some clips of that show

on youtube spitting image very famous show and what they used to

do they used to use rubber puppets so puppets that they

would operate with their hands and then someone else

would do an impersonation or an impression of

that person so it's a very interesting form of humor

satire and one of the most famous characters and don't forget these are

people who who were real at the time

they were alive and real so this show used to satire

the government celebrities famous people here and also abroad as

well and one of the most famous puppets

was this one oh i see so we are talking about satire

does anyone know who this is so this this is a puppet from spitting image

from the 1980s but do you know who this is a very famous person

and she would often appear on this particular program

not the muppets this is definitely not the muppets

there there was no kermit the frog or miss piggy

in this program trust me

so this type of humor satire you are making fun

of famous people or maybe people who are in the public

eye politicians actors singers

but who is this a very well-known character from spitting image and also

a former prime minister of this country way back in the 1980s

satire we are often making fun of famous people

politicians maybe the things that they've done

recently maybe the things that they've done

that they shouldn't have done so we often use

satire in certain ways so this is princess diana and princess

diana was in spitting image a lot but i must say

this is not a very flattering puppet in fact none of them were they were all

i suppose you would describe them as caricatures

a caricature so this is actually a caricature

of princess diana it was used as it was used as

satire you are making fun of a certain thing a certain

organization or a certain person quite often

politics believe it or not they have actually started making

spitting image again using

people who are around now can you guess can you guess one famous person

who is now in the new series of spitting image

so one puppet if you can name it there is one puppet who is in

the new series so there is now in 2020 there is a new series of

spitting image

surreal humour when we think about surreal humour we mean humor that is

unusual or odd strange

maybe something that is unusual or weird or something that does not make

sense or doesn't seem to make sense

surreal humour when we think about british humour

quite often we will

we will think of surreal humour where is boris johnson yes i suppose

they i'm surprised that they haven't used

boris johnson i couldn't even find a photograph of

boris johnson in spitting image to be honest i

couldn't find it

of the u.s nothing would surprise me anymore

one of the things about living in this particular era

is that nothing surprises me it's very hard to be surprised by

anything anymore very hard to be surprised so surreal

humour when we think of surreal humour

one of the things that i always think about is

monty python have you heard of monty python

british humour very popular around the world

americans can i just say americans love monty python so much

even though they always mispronounce the name of the group

they always say monty python i don't know why they say it like that

it isn't monty python it's monty python

monty python not monty python they are over pronouncing python

and it sounds very strange so we often think of monty python one of

the most famous routines

must be the parrot sketch so once again when we think of british

humor we think of surreal humor unusual humor involving strange moments

of time so who remembers this have you ever seen

this the parrot sketch this is the most

famous routine that monty python ever did and it is a man

who goes into a pet shop and he's returning a parrot

and the reason why he's returning the parrot is because

it's dead and that's it that's that's the whole joke but

this routine goes on for a very long time

he walks in and he says i wish to register

a complaint

and the shopkeeper says oh yeah what's the problem i'll tell you

what the problem is my dear man i bought this parrot not half an hour

ago yeah what's the problem i'll tell you

what the problem is it's dead this parrot is dead

and then for the next seven or eight minutes

they argue about the parrot because the the shopkeeper

does not want to give the money back so he keeps trying to find excuses

unusual humor we often see british humour as surreal

and unusual strange or weird

surreal of course i'm not saying that surreal humour only exists

in british english british comedy but also

in all sorts of comedy as well around the world

french comedy french comedy is often seen as very surreal

very unusual i think so

another type of humour

toilet humour dirty humour so something that is

seen as a little disgusting is often referred to
