Even though at the moment this is recorded.

I couldn't resist coming out here today to one of my most favourite places.

I could not resist coming out to breathe in some of that spring.

Yes, it really does feel as if spring is in the air at last.

Finally, we can start to enjoy those long spring days.

I am at the moment in a place,

a local area near to where I live called the 99 Steps.

And the reason why it's called that is because just behind me,

there are 99 steps.

Well, there used to be.

Now there are around 70 steps.

So not quite as many.

I don't know what happened to the others.

They all vanished for some reason.

By the way,

you may have noticed that I am using a stick today.

This is my lovely stick.

And the reason why I'm using this is not because I'm getting old.

Don't worry about that.

I am not becoming infirm, by the way.

The word infirm means unable to move around easily.

Quite often if you are elderly, you will be infirm,

especially if you don't take enough exercise in your earlier years.

Mr. Duncan, some lovely health advice there.

Behind me there is a lovely brook babbling

by a brook is a shallow river

quite often with rocks at the bottom,

and they are normally quite noisy.

And that's the reason why we describe a book as babbling.

Also, if a person talks too much,

they babble we can describe a person as babbling

if they talk for a long time or if they talk about nonsense.

Some people say, Mr.

Duncan, sometimes you babble.

I don't know what you mean.

I haven't eaten any food whatsoever today.

So you might hear my stomach rumbling from time to time.

I've had some computer problems.

Of course,

I was going to go outside today to do my live stream outdoors.

But although yesterday was a beautiful day,

as you could see in the video that I played at the start of today's live stream.

But today, not so good.

It is.

I would say that it is miserable.

I hope you're not miserable,

but the weather outside is quite grey, quite gloomy,

although I have to say we haven't had any sandstorms.

I know a lot of people have been getting sandstorms as the sand

has been lifted and blown across Europe.

But here we haven't had any sand or any sandstorms.

But some parts of Europe have had lots

of dramatic scenes of the orange sky

as the the sand billows across.

I do remember, though, a few years ago

I I do remember when I was in China,

the place that I lived in in China

was very close to the Gobi Desert

and normally around springtime,

there would be lots of sandstorms.

We would get huge gusts of wind

and they would carry a lot of the sand with them.

And in the afternoon you would often hear

the sound of the sand approaching.

It would be a rather eerie, creepy

howling sound in the air

and you knew straight away that there was a sandstorm coming.

And so everyone would have to go indoors, they would have to close their windows,

and then everywhere I would go orange.

You wouldn't be able to see anything outside.

It was like living on Mars for around about ten or 15 minutes

whilst the sandstorm passed over.

But yes, we had a lot of sandstorms

during the spring months in China, but not here today.

Fortunately, you might notice behind me as well, we have a different background

because the weather is so bad My usual background

is just haze mist because the rain is coming down.

However, there is behind me a live view right now

looking into the garden and those are my lovely daffodils in the garden.

So we have a live you, but something

a little different today behind me.

I have to be honest with you.

And I know at the moment there are some terrible things happening in the world.

Of course, in Ukraine, we also have places like Yemen parts of Africa,

where they have already forecast a huge famine,

where maybe up to 11 million

people are going to be affected by famine.

So there are lots of things going on in the world

that are quite gloomy, sad,

unfortunate and dare I say, disastrous for quite a few people.

It doesn't mean that I don't care just because I'm having fun here

and bringing a little bit of sunlight and colour

doesn't mean that I don't care.

I have had some messages and some emails asking Mr.

Duncan, Do you really care about what's happening in the world?

Yes, I do, I do.

Those things do affect me.

But when I do this,

I like to try and bring something positive.

Someone has to do it.

It's very easy

to to turn on the television and listen to the news.

And everything is doom and gloom.

And I do understand that.

But there are people who feel affected by that.

Situation, either directly or indirectly.

So a lot of people like to come and watch my livestream as a way of cheering themselves up.

So that's what I try to do.

However, it doesn't mean I don't care,

and it doesn't mean I have no empathy.

By the way, that's a great word.

Empathy if you have empathy, it means you have an understanding.

You have an understanding of other people's feelings.

So, yes, I do know and I am aware

that we do have many viewers in in the areas

that are affected at the moment, including Ukraine.

So I have received lots of messages,

ever been stuck for words?

Have you ever been in a situation where you could not think what to say?

There are many ways of describing this occurrence.

We can say that you are tongue tied.

You have been left speechless.

You are stuck for words.

You cannot find the words to express yourself.

Your mind has gone blank.

There are many reasons why you might find yourself unable to speak.

Perhaps you are in a state of shock or surprise.

An unexpected event can leave you speechless.

The surprise can be a nice thing, or it can be something

not so nice, such as bad news.

If you are giving a speech to a group of people.

You might find that your brain suddenly stops working.

You become nervous and cannot remember what to say.

I am ever so sorry.

My mind has gone blank.

After a sudden surprise, you might only be able

to say I'm speechless.

You have become tongue tied and stuck for words.

If you try to remember the thing you wanted to mention you might say

It's on the tip of my tongue.

A continuing debate in English usage is the question

of when to use who and when to use whom,

according to formal grammar, who forms the subjective case

and so should be used in subject position in a sentence

as in who decided this the form?

Who, on the other hand, forms the objective case

and so should be used in object position in a sentence as in.

Whom do you think we should support?

To whom do you wish to speak?

Although there are some speakers who still use who and whom, according to the rules of formal grammar.

As stated here, there are many more who rarely use whom at all

its use has retreated steadily

and is now largely restricted to formal contexts.

The normal practise in modern English is to use who instead of whom,

and where applicable to put the preposition at the end of the sentence.

Such uses today are broadly accepted in standard English

So so there has been moments in my past.

There have been moments where I've had bad fortune, bad luck.

So, yes, I think it would be fair to say that you can have both of those things,

although sometimes it does appear that that some people

do have a lot of

bad luck in their lives.

I actually sliced a big chunk out of my toe.

I don't know how I did it, but all I can say is it was very painful.

For many days afterwards.

In fact, even now, if I go for a walk

and I'm wearing my big heavy boots,

it's very painful.

Because my poor little toe is still trying to heal.

because you were waiting for something to happen.

Of course there is the opposite.

You can also be down on your luck as well.

If you are down on your luck, it means you are having no luck.

You are feeling unhappy because you are having no luck.

We might say that you are down on your luck.

So we often use the word down as a negative word to show

that something is not as good as it was.

Or maybe something that is not as good as it could be.

A person is down on their luck.

You are down on your luck because you are having no good luck.

Of course, there are many words we can use to describe.

Look, we can say Fortune,

Chance Destiny.

Well, I like that word.

I don't know why, but the word destiny

is, is the arrival point

in your future.

So maybe in the future you will have good luck.

Your destiny is the road or the route you are taking.

You might experience good things or bad things.

We like to think of our destiny as being something

that is fulfilled.

Maybe a wish.

Maybe something you hope for is your destiny.

Fate is another word we often use fate negatively,

you might notice, but fate is just the outcome of something.

Something that comes your way an occurrence or an event.

Fate.

Although we often

use the word fate negatively to mean

a sad or unfortunate occurrence.

Coincidence?

Yes. As I mentioned earlier,

a coincidence can be a happy event.

Maybe something that you weren't expecting.

Perhaps you are walking down the road

and you just happen

to look on the pavement or on the sidewalk

and you see some money that is maybe a pound coin

or something else of value.

You might think, Oh, that is my lucky day.

That is my lucky pound.

My lucky pound coin.

So you might have a coincidence where two things happen at the same time

and the event leads to something nice happening.

You might say that the moment was lucky.

We often say a lucky coincidence.

Two things that happen at the same time that bring a nice moment of time

with them is a coincidence.

Providence is another word I think this particular word.

Providence is old fashioned, maybe.

I don't think people usually use the word providence,

but it can be used when we are talking about, look,

to be fortunate is to be lucky.

And I suppose in these strange times we are living

in, I think a lot of us

are counting the blessings that we have

because maybe we live in a place that is peaceful,

calm, Maybe you are able to put some food on your plate and eat a meal.

So for me, from my point of view, especially over the last couple of years,

I have started to re-evaluate

my life, things that I often worry about

or feel annoyed about.

I no longer worry about because I realise that those small things in life,

the small things that you have, you realise how fortunate you are

because you can live in your house, you have a roof over your head, you are warm

and you have some food in front of you.

So those things, as far as I'm concerned,

are my ways

of of expressing fortune being fortunate,

having the things that you need to survive.

To be fortunate is to be lucky.

A lucky person might have everything they need in front of them.

And by that I mean walk a roof over your head

and maybe some sort of security as well.

A fortunate person is a lucky person,

a person who has luck on their side.

They are fortunate.

They have good fortune.

We say a fortunate person, fortunate.

And the opposite is unfortunate.

A person who is not lucky is unfortunate.

Maybe they have some bad luck in their life.

You might say that that is unfortunate.

The thing that happened is not positive.

It is negative.

So fortunate is a good thing.

It is something that has come your way.

Some things that you need, something that is good for you

and unfortunate is a situation

or an event that comes along that is not good for you.

So those are the two words and the ways of expressing them

He is a

an interesting phrase, the luck of the draw.

We often describe the luck of the draw

to mean the occurrence of luck or maybe

the actual event of receiving look.

The luck of the draw, for example,

the draw is when you pick something out.

So imagine if you are playing the lottery and you are

waiting for your magic numbers

or your lucky numbers to come up in the lottery.

So quite often they will draw some numbers and that means you are taking something out,

you are drawing the numbers, and then you are showing each number

to the audience or to those who are playing the lottery.

The luck of the draw is the occurrence

or I suppose also the chance of luck

happening or recurring.

By the way, do you play the lottery?

Do you ever take part in the lottery?

I don't. I will be honest with you.

I don't play the lottery

I like to keep

the money instead.

I have seen people in the supermarkets or in the shops

spend 20 or £30

on the lottery for each weekend.

So they go into the shop and they spend 20 or £30

on the lottery.

And as we all know,

the chances or the odds of you winning

are quite high.

They are high or when.

When I say high, I mean the chances are that you won't win.

Maybe it's 10 million to one.

You probably have more chance of being struck by lightning

than winning the lottery.

That's what I'm saying.
