Learn a new English phrase - 'Nothing ventured, nothing gained'

There is a phrase in English

that relates to the action of trying something new,

or doing something that you are unsure of.

A situation that may or may not work out

or be successful.

We often describe this type of thing as a ‘venture’.

Something that you have set out to do,

normally involving a certain outcome or goal.

The phrase I am referring to is commonly used

when we want to encourage

someone to go ahead and just do it.

The phrase is ‘nothing ventured, nothing gained’.

This phrase means that if you don't try,

you will never find out.

Sometimes it is necessary to just go ahead

and give it your best shot.

Perhaps you have an idea for a business,

or maybe a smart invention that you feel

will be useful to other people.

As I have said before,

quite often when we start off doing something new,

the hardest part comes right at the beginning.

Or as you are taking your first step.

There are many reasons why you might give up

on the idea of putting yourself out there and giving it a go.

Self-doubt,

worry about what other people will think.

And of course, the fear of failure.

That is where today's phrase comes in very useful.

because it is better

to give it your best shot and to try to do it,

rather than talk yourself out of it

and spend the rest of your life

wondering if it would have been successful or not.

Whatever that thing may be, just go ahead and do it.

After all...

nothing ventured, nothing gained.
