I Don't Understand AMERICAN ENGLISH!!!!!

America, we need to talk!

Now when you told me that jam was actually jelly I didn't mind.

When you told me that coriander was cilantro I was ok with that.

When you told me that get got got was actually get got gotten, it was hard but I worked through

it.

Now I'm still not sure that pissed should be angry and not drunk, but ok don't worry

about that one.

But what the hell is an eggplant and why doesn't it look like this?

If petrol is gas, then what's gas?

And trousers being pants, that's so confusing guys!

And don't get me started on fanny packs.

Don't get me started!

Now I accept all these differences, after all English is a beautiful rich language where

variety should be celebrated.

But guys there is one phrase, one phrase that I cannot accept America.

I cannot accept it.

'I could care less' I could care less doesn't make any sense.

In British English we have a phrase 'I couldn't care less' which means that you don't care

about something that you are not worried about something.

That, yeah, whatever, I don't mind.

So for example somebody tells me that Dave thinks I'm rude.

I couldn't care less what Dave thinks.

I couldn't care less.

I don't care, whatever!

Dave can think whatever he wants.

Now that phrase, I couldn't care less, everything is explained in that sentence.

Here's how much I care.

I don't care and i cannot care any less.

Nothing.

This is the lowest I can go of caring which is zero.

There is no more below it.

This is zero, I care not at all.

Now in American English 'I could care less' it has the same meaning as 'I couldn't care

less'.

But wait!

I could care less.

What?

There's more caring, I could care less.

So this is how much I care and they are saying I could care less.

That means that I could care this much or this much.

What?

But wait, if you are saying that you don't care why are you saying that you could care

less.

This doesn't make sense.

You could care less surely then there is more here.

I could care less, here, here?

Where is the bottom?

It doesn't make sense.

If you could care less, you could care less.

So you care a little bit is what you are telling me.

If you are saying I could care less, you are telling me that you care at least a little

bit.

But that's not what you mean.

You mean you don't care.

If you don't care surely you would say 'I couldn't care less.'

There's nothing more for me to care.

This one guys, I'm sorry I don't understand.

Of course you know I love American English and all the incredible vocabulary and phrases

that come from American English and American culture, but this one I don't really understand.
