Learn the English Phrases BY THE BOOK and TO BOOK OUT - A Short English Lesson with Subtitles

- So on my other channel,

I'm having a giveaway where some people can win

free English lessons with me later this summer.

And I spent some time yesterday making the video

to announce the giveaway,

but I spent more time researching all the rules

because I wanted to make sure I did it by the book.

When you do something by the book,

it means that you do it properly.

When you do something by the book,

you research what all the rules and terms

and conditions are for doing something,

and then you make sure that you follow all of them

because I wanted to make sure

that I did the giveaway properly.

I wanted to make sure that I did it by the book.

Some people don't care about doing things by the book,

but I do.

I often do almost everything by the book in my life.

I like to obey the law, I like to do things properly,

I like to do things by the book all the time.

Hey, the other phrase I have for you today

is to book out, which has the word book in it,

but it means something completely different.

When you book out, it means that you leave.

Sometimes, it means that you leave really quickly.

So you could say, "Hey, I'm gonna book out right now

"and get some groceries."

Maybe you're at a party, and you say to someone,

"Hey, I can't stay too long.

"I'm gonna book out in about an hour

"because I need to go home."

So when you book out, it means that you leave.

I'm not sure where this phrase came from.

It actually seems kind of strange to me

to use the word book in the phrase to book out

to mean that you are leaving.

But anyways, if you do something by the book,

it means that you follow all of the rules

for that thing you are doing,

and if you book out of somewhere,

it means that you leave really, really quickly.
