Meaning of BRIGHT AND EARLY - A Really Short English Lesson with Subtitles

So when I was a kid, I lived on a farm

and I had to get up bright and early every day.

In English, when we say that

you have to get up bright and early,

it means that you get up really early,

like at five AM or even earlier.

I lived on a farm and we had cows,

and the cows needed to be milked every day,

so I got up bright and early,

and actually, yesterday, I had to go to Toronto,

which is a big city close to me,

but it sometimes takes a while to get there,

because traffic can be bad,

so yesterday, I got up bright and early

because I wanted to make it

to my meeting in Toronto on time.

So when you say that you are getting up bright and early,

it means that you are getting up early in the morning,

usually earlier than normal (laughs),

and usually just as the sun is coming up

or some time close to that.

I don't like getting up bright and early.

Hey, we have another phrase

which I actually looked at a few months ago,

which means exactly the same thing.

When you get up at the crack of dawn,

it means that you are getting up bright and early,

or that you are getting up really early in the morning.

I don't like to sleep in,

but I also don't like to get up

at the crack of dawn every day.

I do like my sleep

and I do like to sleep in just a little bit,
