Meaning of PERSONAL SPACE and PEOPLE PERSON - A Short English Lesson with Subtitles

- So in English, your personal space

is the area right around you.

When you are on a crowded train, or on the subway,

sometimes you have to stand really close to other people

and they are in your personal space.

Normally, most people like to have

a little bit of room around them,

we don't all like to have people crowded against us,

and so we call that area our personal space.

I personally don't like having a lot of people

in my personal space.

I'm a little bit claustrophobic,

I don't like being in crowded places

and I don't like it when people are really close to me

and they are in my personal space.

So, when I go on the train or when I go on the subway,

I love it when it's really, really empty

and right now because we're doing so much social distancing,

pretty much everywhere I go I have lots of personal space,

more than enough.

This is not really related, it's just another English phrase

I wanted to teach you,

and that's that you can sometimes describe someone

as being a people person.

A people person is someone

who really likes being around people.

We would also call this person an extrovert.

So someone who likes to go to parties,

someone who likes to go to big events

where there are lots of people,

and someone who likes to talk to people a lot

we would call a people person.

This might surprise you,

but I'm not really a people person all the time.

Sometimes I am, but sometimes I like to just be home

by myself and quietly reading a book.

So when I'm in that mode, when I'm not a people person,

I do actually enjoy being home right now, it's not too bad,

but I think a lot of people who are people persons

are having a difficult time right now.
