Learn the English Phrase IN DENIAL and TO DENY MYSELF

In this English lesson,

I wanted to help you learn the English phrase

to be in denial.

If someone is in denial about something,

it means that there are a lot of facts

that show that something is true,

but they still don't believe it.

There are a lot of people

in the world that are in denial about climate change.

There is a lot of scientific evidence

that climate change is happening

but a lot of people are in denial.

So when you are in denial about something

it means that there are lots of facts.

There's lots of scientific information

that proves something is true

but you still don't believe it, so you are in denial.

Sometimes people have this in life as well.

Maybe they love someone

and that person doesn't love them back,

but in their minds,

they think that they are still

having a romantic relationship.

We would say that that person is in denial

because they are not believing

that the other person doesn't love them anymore.

That's kinda sad.

The other phrase I wanted to teach you today

is the phrase to deny myself or to deny oneself.

If I deny myself something

it means I don't allow myself to have it.

Right now I'm trying to deny myself ice cream,

I thought I should stop eating ice cream.

It sometimes makes my stomach upset,

it's full of sugar and fat

and it's really not good for you.

So I'm trying to deny myself ice cream.

When you deny yourself something

when you say I'm going to deny myself this thing

or that thing,

it means you're not going to let yourself have it.

So once again to be in denial

means to not believe something that is scientifically true.

And when you deny yourself

or when you say I'm going to deny myself something

it means you're not going to allow yourself to have it.

I think I'm in denial a little bit

about the weather right now.

It's actually cold out here, my hands are cold

and I don't have my gloves or my hat,

'cause I think I'm in denial that it's actually cold.

It's been warm for so long.

I think I'm just in a little bit of denial.

Hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video.

but I love studying things and I always use my brain a lot.

One of my biggest fears is also

if one day my brain isn't with it

and my response is bonjour Patty

I use a little bit of French there.

My mom does Sudokus for her brain.

I don't know if I'm pronouncing that right by the way

but I say Sudokus, Sudokus.

Sudoku's I'm going to start doing them too.

So Sudoku's, if I'm saying it correctly

our little math puzzles where you have a grid of numbers

by the way, thank you Patty, for that comment,

it's a good one.

And it's from the video where I was talking

about being with it.

I wanna make sure when I'm old that I'm with it

and in that video as well, I think

or a comment from that video as well from Julia

was that she likes learning a language

because it's good for your brain as well.

So Patty, yes, I think that you do need to make sure

that you do things with your brain so that you stay with it.

It's good to always use your brain a lot.

And Julia as well from that previous comment said

learning a language is a good way to keep your brain active.

I'm gonna try and do both.

I'm gonna try and start doing

crossword puzzles and Sudoku's

I think that's the right pronunciation.

It's kind of a relatively new kind of puzzle here in Canada.

It's only been around for about 20 years, maybe more

but I'm gonna try to do those as well.

Jen has mentioned before, too

that she would like to start to learn, to play the piano

or learn another language as she gets older

so that she can keep her brain working really well.

I think it's important for us older people

to do things that keep us mentally fit that keep us with it.
