we are looking at prepositions of place.

We'll start with the ones that only really have one clear meaning.

So, first up,

I'm sitting next to the box.

私は箱の隣に座っています 。

Woah! In front of the box.

うわー！ 箱の前。

OK, next to the box again.

はい、また箱の隣です。

And I'm behind the box.

そして私はボックスの後ろにいる。

And I'm in front of the box.

そして私は箱の前にいる。

Now, I am under the box.

今、私は箱の下にいる。

Oh, no. I'm stuck.

なんてこった。 行き詰まってしまった。

I'm stuck under the box.

箱の下に閉じ込められてしまいました。

OK, the box is above my head.

OK、箱は頭の上にあります。

There box is above my head.

私の頭の上に箱があります。

What's happening now? Oh! Now

I am dancing between the chair and

the box. I'm dancing between the chair and the box.

OK, I'm sitting on the chair.

I am on the chair and I look very happy about it.

OK. So what about the confusing ones?

Like, why do we say 'I'm at school' and not

なぜ私たちは 「学校にいます」ではなく

'I'm in the school'. It's a good question.

「学校にいます」と言うのでしょう。 良い質問ですね。

Thanks! But it doesn't have a simple answer.

Let's compare 'in' and 'at'.

「in」と「at」を比較してみましょう。

We tend to use 'in' for spaces which are larger and more general,

私たちは、より広く、より一般的なスペースには「in」を使用する傾向があります

whereas we use 'at' for places with more specific activities.

が、より具体的なアクティビティがある場所には「at」を使用します 。

If you go to a supermarket,

スーパーに行くと、

you are probably buying food.

おそらく食べ物を買うでしょう。

If you go to an airport,

空港に行くなら、

You are probably catching a flight. But it's not always that easy.

おそらく飛行機に乗るでしょう。 しかし、それは必ずしも簡単ではありません。

Look at these weird examples. We say 'I'm in the office', but 'I'm at work'.

これらの奇妙な例を見てください。 私たちは 「オフィスにいます」と言いますが、「仕事中です」と言います。

We say 'I'm in the house', but 'I'm at home'.

私たちは「家にいる」と言っています が、「家にいます」です。

Why?! It's best not to question it.

through a lot of practice and exposure to the language. I'm sorry.
