We'll start with the ones that only really have one clear meaning.

So, first up,

I'm sitting next to the box.

Woah! In front of the box.

! 상자 앞.

OK, next to the box again.

And I'm behind the box.

그리고 나는 상자 뒤에 있습니다.

And I'm in front of the box.

그리고 나는 상자 앞에 있습니다.

Now, I am under the box.

이제 나는 상자 아래에 있습니다.

Oh, no. I'm stuck.

안 돼. 나는 붙어있다.

I'm stuck under the box.

상자 밑에 갇혀 있어요.

OK, the box is above my head.

What's happening now? Oh! Now

the box. I'm dancing between the chair and the box.

OK, I'm sitting on the chair.

I am on the chair and I look very happy about it.

OK. So what about the confusing ones?

Like, why do we say 'I'm at school' and not

'I'm in the school'. It's a good question.

Thanks! But it doesn't have a simple answer.

Let's compare 'in' and 'at'.

'in'과 'at'을 비교해 보겠습니다.

We tend to use 'in' for spaces which are larger and more general,

우리는 더 크고 일반적인 공간에 'in'을 사용하는 경향이 있는

whereas we use 'at' for places with more specific activities.

반면, 보다 구체적인 활동이 있는 장소에는 'at'를 사용합니다 .

If you go to a supermarket,

슈퍼마켓에 가면

you are probably buying food.

아마도 음식을 사게 될 것입니다.

If you go to an airport,

공항에 가면

You are probably catching a flight. But it's not always that easy.

아마도 비행기를 타게 될 것입니다. 하지만 항상 그렇게 쉬운 것은 아닙니다.

Look at these weird examples. We say 'I'm in the office', but 'I'm at work'.

이 이상한 예를보세요. 우리는 '나는 사무실에 있다'라고 말하지만 '나는 직장에 있다'라고 말합니다.

We say 'I'm in the house', but 'I'm at home'.

우리는 '나는 집에 있다'라고 말하지만 '나는 집에 있다'라고 말합니다.

Why?! It's best not to question it.

Just memorise the combinations
