still & no longer | English grammar in conversation

Today we're going to look at two adverbs, 'still' and 'no longer'.

Hoje veremos dois advérbios, 'ainda' e 'não mais'.

And use different contexts to make it clear for you how to use them correctly.

E use contextos diferentes para deixar claro para você como usá-los corretamente.

Make sure you watch the lesson till the end where we use these words in  two very typical daily conversations.

So, when you're ready, let's begin.

'No longer' means not anymore.

'Não mais' significa não mais.

Suppose someone asks you:

Suponha que alguém pergunte a você:

Do you still work out at the gym?

você ainda malha na academia?

You can answer:

Você pode responder:

No, I do not work out at the gym anymore or any longer.

Não, eu não malho mais na academia ou mais.

Or, you can replace 'not anymore' or 'not any longer'

Ou você pode substituir 'não mais' ou 'não mais'

by 'no longer' and simply say:

por 'não mais' e simplesmente dizer:

No, I no longer work out at the gym.

Não, eu não malho mais na academia.

Notice that 'no longer' goes directly before the main verb:

Observe que 'não mais' vem diretamente antes do verbo principal:

'work'.

'trabalhar'.

I no longer work out at the gym.

Não treino mais na academia.

But, there is one exception, and that's with the verb 'be'.

Mas há uma exceção: o verbo 'ser'.

So, let's take the example of someone saying to you:

Então, vamos pegar o exemplo de alguém que diz para você:

Are you still upset?

você ainda está chateado?

Your answer is: No, I am no longer upset.

Sua resposta é: Não, não estou mais chateado.

So, 'no longer' always goes after the verb 'be'.

Portanto, 'não mais' sempre vem depois do verbo 'ser'.

Alright, let's look at some other tenses where we have an auxiliary.

Tudo bem, vamos ver alguns outros tempos em que temos um auxiliar.

For example, Present Continuous tense.

Por exemplo, tempo presente contínuo.

The auxiliary is the verb 'be'.

O auxiliar é o verbo 'ser'.

Let's look at the question: Is it still snowing?

Vejamos a pergunta: ainda está nevando?

And the answer is: No, it is no longer snowing.

E a resposta é: Não, não está mais nevando.

Or, Future Simple:

Ou, Future Simple:

Will it still work?

ainda funcionará?

No it will no longer work.

Não, não vai mais funcionar.

So, notice that now when we have an auxiliary,

Portanto, observe que agora, quando temos um auxiliar,

the word 'no longer', like most adverbs, goes between the auxiliary verb and the main verb.

a palavra 'não mais', como a maioria dos advérbios, fica entre o verbo auxiliar e o verbo principal.

Now, what if we have a modal verb.

Agora, e se tivermos um verbo modal.

For example:

Por exemplo:

Can you still hear the music?

Você ainda consegue ouvir a música?

No, I can no longer hear it.

Não, não consigo mais ouvir.

Like with an auxiliary verb,

Como acontece com um verbo auxiliar,

it goes between the modal verb and the main verb.

ele fica entre o verbo modal e o verbo principal.

Okay! Let's look at two common mistakes.

OK! Vejamos dois erros comuns.

The first one is answering the question with 'still'.

A primeira é responder à pergunta com 'ainda'.

So saying: No, I can't still hear it.

Então dizendo: Não, ainda não consigo ouvir.

If you're using the negative verb 'can't', use 'anymore'.

Se você estiver usando o verbo negativo 'can't', use 'anymore'.

No, I can't hear it anymore.

Não, não consigo mais ouvir.

The second common mistake is using double negative.

O segundo erro comum é usar dupla negativa.

So: Is it still snowing?

Então: ainda está nevando?

And saying: No, it is not no longer snowing.

E dizendo: Não, não está mais nevando.

'No longer' is a complete negative expression.

'Não mais' é uma expressão totalmente negativa.

You don't need to make your verb negative.

Você não precisa fazer seu verbo negativo.

So, drop the 'not'. No it is no longer snowing.

Portanto, descarte o 'não'. Não, não está mais nevando.

So, can we ever use 'still' in a negative sentence?

Então, podemos usar 'ainda' em uma frase negativa?

The answer is... Yes! But in a very specific context.

A resposta é sim! Mas em um contexto muito específico.

Let's suppose you say to someone:

Suponhamos que você diga a alguém:

I can't hear the music. Could you turn it up please?

não consigo ouvir a música. Você poderia aumentá-lo, por favor?

And they say: Sure!

E eles dizem: Claro!

They turn it up and they ask you:

Eles aumentam e perguntam:

Can you hear it now?

você consegue ouvir agora?

And you can't, so you can say:

E você não pode, então pode dizer:

No, I still can't hear it.

Não, ainda não consigo ouvir.

Notice very importantly where 'still' goes in the sentence.

Observe muito importante onde 'ainda' vai na frase.

It goes before the negative modal verb.

Vai antes do verbo modal negativo.

You are stressing the point that you still cannot hear it.

Você está enfatizando o ponto que ainda não consegue ouvir.

Right! Let's put all of that together in two typical conversations.

Certo! Vamos juntar tudo isso em duas conversas típicas.

Starting with conversation number 1.

Começando com a conversa número 1.

Someone says:

Alguém diz:

Are you still waiting for your exam results?

Você ainda está esperando o resultado do seu exame?

Yes, I'm still waiting.

Sim, ainda estou esperando.

Do they still send them by post?

Eles ainda os enviam pelo correio?

No, they no longer post them.

Não, eles não os publicam mais.

They send them by email.

Eles os enviam por e-mail.

When did you check your emails?

Quando você verificou seus e-mails?

I checked them this morning and didn't see an email from them.

Eu os verifiquei esta manhã e não vi nenhum e-mail deles.

Have a look now!

Okay! Let me check again.

No, they still haven't sent me anything.

Okay, let's look at typical conversation number 2.

Ok, vamos ver a conversa típica número 2.

Someone says:

Are you still mad at me?

Você ainda está com raiva de mim?

No, I'm no longer mad at you.

Não, não estou mais com raiva de você.

So, are we still going out for dinner tonight?

Então, ainda vamos jantar hoje à noite?

No, we're no longer going out tonight.

Não, não vamos mais sair hoje à noite.

Why not?

Por que não?

My car has a flat tyre.

Meu carro está com o pneu furado.

Oh! Have you called the recovery people?

Oh! Você ligou para o pessoal da recuperação?

Yes, that was two hours ago and they still haven't sent anyone.

Sim, isso foi há duas horas e eles ainda não enviaram ninguém.

They let me down last time too, so I'm no longer going to use them.
