still & no longer | English grammar in conversation

Today we're going to look at two adverbs, 'still' and 'no longer'.

오늘은 '여전히'와 '더 이상'이라는 두 개의 부사를 ​​살펴보겠습니다.

And use different contexts to make it clear for you how to use them correctly.

So, when you're ready, let's begin.

'No longer' means not anymore.

Suppose someone asks you:

Do you still work out at the gym?

You can answer:

대답할 수 있습니다.

No, I do not work out at the gym anymore or any longer.

아니요, 더 이상 체육관에서 운동하지 않습니다.

Or, you can replace 'not anymore' or 'not any longer'

또는 '더 이상' 또는 '더

by 'no longer' and simply say:

이상'을 '더 이상'으로 바꾸고 간단히 '

No, I no longer work out at the gym.

아니오, 더 이상 체육관에서 운동하지 않습니다'라고 말할 수 있습니다.

Notice that 'no longer' goes directly before the main verb:

'더 이상'은 기본 동사

'work'.

'작업' 바로 앞에 옵니다.

I no longer work out at the gym.

나는 더 이상 체육관에서 운동하지 않습니다.

But, there is one exception, and that's with the verb 'be'.

하지만 한 가지 예외가 있는데 바로 'be' 동사입니다.

So, let's take the example of someone saying to you:

따라서 누군가가 당신에게 다음과 같이 말하는 것을 예로 들어 보겠습니다.

Are you still upset?

아직도 속상하십니까?

Your answer is: No, I am no longer upset.

당신의 대답은: 아니오, 나는 더 이상 화가 나지 않습니다.

So, 'no longer' always goes after the verb 'be'.

그래서 'no more'는 항상 동사 'be' 뒤에 옵니다.

Alright, let's look at some other tenses where we have an auxiliary.

자, 조동사가 있는 다른 시제를 살펴보겠습니다.

For example, Present Continuous tense.

예를 들어 현재 진행 시제입니다.

The auxiliary is the verb 'be'.

조동사는 동사 'be'입니다.

Let's look at the question: Is it still snowing?

And the answer is: No, it is no longer snowing.

대답은 다음과 같습니다. 아니요, 더 이상 눈이 내리지 않습니다.

Or, Future Simple:

또는 Future Simple:

Will it still work?

여전히 작동할까요?

No it will no longer work.

아니요, 더 이상 작동하지 않습니다.

So, notice that now when we have an auxiliary,

이제 조동사가 있으면

the word 'no longer', like most adverbs, goes between the auxiliary verb and the main verb.

대부분의 부사처럼 'no longer'이라는 단어가 조동사와 본동사 사이에 옵니다.

Now, what if we have a modal verb.

이제 조동사가 있으면 어떨까요?

For example:

예를 들면:

Can you still hear the music?

아직도 음악이 들리나요?

No, I can no longer hear it.

아니요, 더 이상 들리지 않습니다.

Like with an auxiliary verb,

조동사처럼

it goes between the modal verb and the main verb.

조동사와 본동사 사이에 옵니다.

Okay! Let's look at two common mistakes.

좋아요! 두 가지 일반적인 실수를 살펴보겠습니다.

The first one is answering the question with 'still'.

첫 번째는 '여전히'로 질문에 답하는 것입니다.

So saying: No, I can't still hear it.

즉, 아니요, 아직 들리지 않습니다.

If you're using the negative verb 'can't', use 'anymore'.

부정 동사 'can't'를 사용하는 경우 'anymore'를 사용하세요.

No, I can't hear it anymore.

아니요, 더 이상 들리지 않습니다.

The second common mistake is using double negative.

두 번째 일반적인 실수는 이중 부정을 사용하는 것입니다.

So: Is it still snowing?

그래서: 아직도 눈이 오나요?

And saying: No, it is not no longer snowing.

그리고 말하기: 아니오, 더 이상 눈이 내리지 않습니다.

'No longer' is a complete negative expression.

'더 이상'은 완전한 부정 표현입니다.

You don't need to make your verb negative.

동사를 부정적으로 만들 필요는 없습니다.

So, drop the 'not'. No it is no longer snowing.

따라서 'not'을 삭제하세요. 아니 더 이상 눈이 내리지 않습니다.

So, can we ever use 'still' in a negative sentence?

The answer is... Yes! But in a very specific context.

Let's suppose you say to someone:

누군가에게 다음과 같이 말한다고 가정해 보겠습니다.

I can't hear the music. Could you turn it up please?

And they say: Sure!

They turn it up and they ask you:

Notice very importantly where 'still' goes in the sentence.

It goes before the negative modal verb.

You are stressing the point that you still cannot hear it.

여전히 들리지 않는다는 점을 강조하고 있습니다.

Right! Let's put all of that together in two typical conversations.

Starting with conversation number 1.

Someone says:

Are you still waiting for your exam results?

Okay, let's look at typical conversation number 2.

Someone says:

Are you still mad at me?

No, I'm no longer mad at you.

So, are we still going out for dinner tonight?

No, we're no longer going out tonight.

Why not?

My car has a flat tyre.

Yes, that was two hours ago and they still haven't sent anyone.
