still & no longer | English grammar in conversation

Hello everyone, this is Minoo at Anglo-Link. Today we're going to look at two adverbs,

Today we're going to look at two adverbs, 'still' and 'no longer'.

Hoy vamos a ver dos adverbios, 'todavía' y 'ya no'.

And use different contexts to make it clear for you how to use them correctly.

Y use diferentes contextos para que le quede claro cómo usarlos correctamente.

Make sure you watch the lesson till the end where we use these words in  two very typical daily conversations.

So, when you're ready, let's begin.

Entonces, cuando estés listo, comencemos.

'No longer' means not anymore.

'Ya no' significa ya no.

Suppose someone asks you:

Supongamos que alguien te pregunta:

Do you still work out at the gym?

¿Todavía haces ejercicio en el gimnasio?

You can answer:

Puedes responder:

No, I do not work out at the gym anymore or any longer.

No, ya no hago ejercicio en el gimnasio o nunca más.

Or, you can replace 'not anymore' or 'not any longer'

O bien, puede reemplazar 'ya no' o 'ya no'

by 'no longer' and simply say:

por 'ya no' y simplemente decir:

No, I no longer work out at the gym.

No, ya no hago ejercicio en el gimnasio.

Notice that 'no longer' goes directly before the main verb:

Tenga en cuenta que 'no más' va directamente antes del verbo principal:

'work'.

'trabajar'.

I no longer work out at the gym.

Ya no hago ejercicio en el gimnasio.

But, there is one exception, and that's with the verb 'be'.

Pero hay una excepción, y es con el verbo 'ser'.

So, let's take the example of someone saying to you:

Entonces, tomemos el ejemplo de alguien que te dice:

Are you still upset?

¿Todavía estás molesto?

Your answer is: No, I am no longer upset.

Tu respuesta es: No, ya no estoy molesto.

So, 'no longer' always goes after the verb 'be'.

Entonces, 'no longer' siempre va después del verbo 'be'.

Alright, let's look at some other tenses where we have an auxiliary.

Muy bien, veamos algunos otros tiempos en los que tenemos un auxiliar.

For example, Present Continuous tense.

Por ejemplo, presente continuo.

The auxiliary is the verb 'be'.

El auxiliar es el verbo 'ser'.

Let's look at the question: Is it still snowing?

Veamos la pregunta: ¿Sigue nevando?

And the answer is: No, it is no longer snowing.

Y la respuesta es: No, ya no está nevando.

Or, Future Simple:

O Future Simple:

Will it still work?

¿seguirá funcionando?

No it will no longer work.

No, ya no funcionará.

So, notice that now when we have an auxiliary,

Entonces, fíjate que ahora, cuando tenemos un auxiliar,

the word 'no longer', like most adverbs, goes between the auxiliary verb and the main verb.

la palabra 'ya no', como la mayoría de los adverbios, va entre el verbo auxiliar y el verbo principal.

Now, what if we have a modal verb.

Ahora, ¿qué pasa si tenemos un verbo modal?

For example:

Por ejemplo:

Can you still hear the music?

¿Todavía puedes escuchar la música?

No, I can no longer hear it.

No, ya no puedo escucharlo.

Like with an auxiliary verb,

Al igual que con un verbo auxiliar

it goes between the modal verb and the main verb.

, va entre el verbo modal y el verbo principal.

Okay! Let's look at two common mistakes.

¡Bueno! Veamos dos errores comunes.

The first one is answering the question with 'still'.

El primero es responder a la pregunta con 'todavía'.

So saying: No, I can't still hear it.

Entonces, diciendo: No, todavía no puedo escucharlo.

If you're using the negative verb 'can't', use 'anymore'.

Si está usando el verbo negativo 'can't', use 'anymore'.

No, I can't hear it anymore.

No, ya no puedo oírlo.

The second common mistake is using double negative.

El segundo error común es usar doble negativo.

So: Is it still snowing?

Entonces: ¿sigue nevando?

And saying: No, it is not no longer snowing.

Y diciendo: No, ya no está nevando.

'No longer' is a complete negative expression.

'Ya no' es una expresión completamente negativa.

You don't need to make your verb negative.

No necesitas hacer que tu verbo sea negativo.

So, drop the 'not'. No it is no longer snowing.

Entonces, deja el 'no'. No, ya no está nevando.

So, can we ever use 'still' in a negative sentence?

Entonces, ¿podemos usar 'todavía' en una oración negativa?

The answer is... Yes! But in a very specific context.

¡La respuesta es sí! Pero en un contexto muy específico.

Let's suppose you say to someone:

Supongamos que le dices a alguien:

I can't hear the music. Could you turn it up please?

no puedo escuchar la música. ¿Podrías subirlo, por favor?

And they say: Sure!

Y dicen: ¡Claro!

They turn it up and they ask you:

Lo suben y te preguntan:

Can you hear it now?

¿Puedes escucharlo ahora?

And you can't, so you can say:

Y no puedes, entonces puedes decir:

No, I still can't hear it.

No, todavía no puedo escucharlo.

Notice very importantly where 'still' goes in the sentence.

Fíjate muy importante dónde va 'todavía' en la oración.

It goes before the negative modal verb.

Va antes del verbo modal negativo.

You are stressing the point that you still cannot hear it.

Estás enfatizando el punto de que todavía no puedes escucharlo.

Right! Let's put all of that together in two typical conversations.

¡Derecho! Pongamos todo eso junto en dos conversaciones típicas.

Starting with conversation number 1.

Comenzando con la conversación número 1.

Someone says:

Alguien dice:

Are you still waiting for your exam results?

¿Sigues esperando los resultados de tu examen?

Yes, I'm still waiting.

Sí, todavía estoy esperando.

Do they still send them by post?

¿Todavía los envían por correo?

No, they no longer post them.

No, ya no los publican.

They send them by email.

Los envían por correo electrónico.

When did you check your emails?

¿Cuándo revisaste tus correos electrónicos?

I checked them this morning and didn't see an email from them.

Los revisé esta mañana y no vi ningún correo electrónico de ellos.

Have a look now!

Okay! Let me check again.

¡Bueno! Dejame revisar otra vez.

No, they still haven't sent me anything.

No, todavía no me han enviado nada.

Okay, let's look at typical conversation number 2.

Bien, veamos la conversación típica número 2.

Someone says:

Alguien dice:

Are you still mad at me?

¿Sigues enojado conmigo?

No, I'm no longer mad at you.

No, ya no estoy enojado contigo.

So, are we still going out for dinner tonight?

Entonces, ¿seguiremos saliendo a cenar esta noche?

No, we're no longer going out tonight.

No, ya no saldremos esta noche.

Why not?

¿Por qué no?

My car has a flat tyre.

Mi coche tiene un neumático pinchado.

Oh! Have you called the recovery people?

Yes, that was two hours ago and they still haven't sent anyone.

They let me down last time too, so I'm no longer going to use them.

Okay! That brings us to the end of this lesson.
