Should we say I've been in Rome or I've been to Rome?

Well actually, they're both correct.

But, they mean different things.

So, when you're ready, let's look at 'been in' first.

So, what do we mean when we say:  He has been in Rome for three days?

では、「 彼はローマに 3 日間滞在している」とはどういう意味ですか?

We mean he arrived in Rome three days ago, and he's still there.

彼は 3 日前にローマに到着し、まだそこにいます。

So, what about 'been to'?

では、「been to」はどうでしょうか。

What do we mean when we say:

「

He has been to Paris three times.

彼はパリに 3 回行ったことがあります。」とはどういう意味ですか?

We mean he has visited Paris three times.

彼はパリを3回訪れたということです。

So, why is it 'to' in this case and not 'in'?

では、なぜこの場合は「in」ではなく「to」なのですか？

Why is it he has been to Paris?

Right, the verb 'go' has two past participle forms.

そうです、動詞「go」には 2 つの過去分詞形があります。

The first one is 'gone'.

最初のものは「なくなった」です。

go - went - gone.

行く - 行った - 行った。

When we use 'gone' as the past participle, we mean that the person is still there.

「gone」を過去分詞として使用する場合 、その人がまだそこにいることを意味します。

We can say: He's gone to Rome and he's been there for three days.

私たちは次のように言うことができます: 彼はローマに行って、そこに 3 日間滞在しました。

So, what's the other past participle form of the verb 'go'?

You will be surprised to find out that it's 'been'.

When we use 'been' as the past participle, we mean that the person is not there anymore.

The person is not there now.

That's why we say: He has been to Paris three times.

He last went to Paris in 2019.
