Should we say I've been in Rome or I've been to Rome?

Well actually, they're both correct.

Beh, in realtà, hanno entrambi ragione.

But, they mean different things.

In questa breve lezione scoprirai la differenza tra I've been in e I've been to.

So, when you're ready, let's look at 'been in' first.

Quindi, quando sei pronto, diamo prima un'occhiata a "stato in".

So, what do we mean when we say:  He has been in Rome for three days?

Quindi, cosa intendiamo quando diciamo: È a Roma da tre giorni?

We mean he arrived in Rome three days ago, and he's still there.

Intendiamo dire che è arrivato a Roma tre giorni fa, ed è ancora lì.

So, what about 'been to'?

What do we mean when we say:

Cosa intendiamo quando diciamo:

He has been to Paris three times.

è stato a Parigi tre volte.

We mean he has visited Paris three times.

Intendiamo dire che ha visitato Parigi tre volte.

So, why is it 'to' in this case and not 'in'?

Quindi, perché in questo caso è "to" e non "in"?

Why is it he has been to Paris?

Right, the verb 'go' has two past participle forms.

Esatto, il verbo "andare" ha due forme di participio passato.

The first one is 'gone'.

Il primo è "andato".

go - went - gone.

andare andato andato.

When we use 'gone' as the past participle, we mean that the person is still there.

Quando usiamo "gone" come participio passato, intendiamo che la persona è ancora lì.

We can say: He's gone to Rome and he's been there for three days.

Possiamo dire: è andato a Roma ed è lì da tre giorni.

So, what's the other past participle form of the verb 'go'?

Allora, qual è l'altra forma di participio passato del verbo "andare"?

You will be surprised to find out that it's 'been'.

Sarai sorpreso di scoprire che è "stato".

go - went - been.

vai - andato - stato.

When we use 'been' as the past participle, we mean that the person is not there anymore.

Quando usiamo "been" come participio passato, intendiamo che la persona non c'è più.

The person is not there now.

La persona non è lì ora.

That's why we say: He has been to Paris three times.

Ecco perché diciamo: è stato a Parigi tre volte. L'

He last went to Paris in 2019.

ultima volta che è andato a Parigi è stato nel 2019.

No, I haven't. I've been to Cambridge but not to Oxford.
