Common mistakes | prepositions of time for, since, from

In this lesson we're going to look at some common  mistakes I often hear with the prepositions

'for', 'since', and 'from'.

Remember that just learning  the rules is not enough to activate something into your own usage.

It's important to do a sufficient amount of practice as well.

Now, let's look at some common mistakes with the prepositions 'for', 'since', and 'from'

and see if you can correct them.

Starting with common mistake No.1.

よくある間違いNo.1から始めます。

Find the mistake in this sentence:

この文の間違いを見つけてください。

I have been living in Greece for 10 years between 2005 and 2015.

私は 2005 年から 2015 年までの 10 年間、ギリシャに住んでいます。

A very common mistake is to think that every time we see the word 'for' and a length of time,

we should use the Present Perfect Continuous tense.

That is not the case.

For example in this sentence, it's clear that the person no longer lives in Greece.

They lived in Greece between 2005 and 2015.

Right! Let's look at common mistake No.2.

Here's the sentence for you to correct:

I've been here since two hours.

です。I've been here since two hours.

I think you got that. It's not since two hours, but...

私はあなたがそれを得たと思います。 2 時間後ではありませんが

for two hours.

... 2 時間です。

Right, let's look at common mistake No. 3.

よくある間違い 3 を見てみましょう。

Here's the sentence: We've consulted three lawyers for the past two weeks.

次の文は次のとおり です。過去 2 週間、3 人の弁護士に相談しました。

What's the mistake here?

ここでの間違いは何ですか？

Right! Here we're using 'for' by mistake.

右！ ここでは、誤って「for」を使用しています。

The proposition we need here is 'in'.

ここで必要な命題は「in」です。

We've consulted three lawyers in the past two weeks.

過去 2 週間で 3 人の弁護士に相談しました。

Because we're referring to three completed actions.

完了した 3 つのアクションについて言及しているためです。

We can only use 'for' if we're referring  to an action that started in the past and still continues.

過去に開始され、現在も継続しているアクションを指す場合にのみ、「for」を使用できます。

For example:  We've been working on this problem for the past two weeks.

例: 過去 2 週間、この問題に取り組んできました。

Okay! Common mistake No. 4.

わかった！ よくある間違い 4.

I've been here from two o'clock.

2 時からここにいます。

I'm sure you got that one. It's...

私はあなたがそれを持っていると確信しています。 それは...

I've been here since two o'clock.

2時からここにいます。

It's important for you to understand what the word 'since' actually means.

「since」という言葉が実際に何を意味するのかを理解することが重要です。

'Since' means from a time in the past until now.

「Since」は、過去のある時点から現在までという意味です。

And that's why you can only use 'since' with Present Perfect Continuous and Present Perfect tenses,

そのため、'since' は 現在完了進行形と現在完了形でのみ使用できます。

which are tenses related to actions that started in the past,  or states that started in the past

これらの時制は、過去に開始されたアクション、 または過去に開始されて現在まで続いている状態に関連する時制

and continue until now.

So, when the action or state continues, we always use the word 'since'.

For example:  I've been living in Thailand since 2015.

例: 2015 年からタイに住んでいます。

Or: I have lived in Thailand since 2015.

または: 2015 年からタイに住んで

I've been here since 9 a.m.

Right! Let's look at mistake No. 5.

そうです！ 間違い 5 を見てみましょう。

We've been working on this issue since two weeks ago.

私たちは 2 週間前からこの問題に取り組んできました。

How could you improve this sentence?

この文をどのように改善できますか?

Now, although this sentence is not completely wrong,

さて、この文は完全に間違っているわけではありませんが、

if you're going to say 'two weeks', why make it so long?

「2 週間」と言うなら、なぜそんなに長くするのでしょうか?

Why say 'since two weeks ago'? Just use the preposition 'for'.

なぜ「2週間前から」と言うのですか？ 前置詞「for」のみを使用してください。

We've been working on this issue for two weeks.

私たちはこの問題に 2 週間取り組んできました。

Okay, let's look at mistake No. 6.

では、間違い番号 6 を見てみましょう

I've been here since the shop has opened.

。店がオープンして以来、私はここにいます。

The mistake here is using the Present Perfect tense instead of Past Simple in the 'since' clause.

ここでの間違いは、「since」節で単純過去形ではなく現在完了形を使用していることです 。

In the 'since' clause, always use the Past Simple tense.

「since」句では、常に過去形を使用します。

So: I've been here since the shop opened.

だから：私は店が開いたときからここにいます。

And finally, mistake No. 7.

そして最後に、ミス 7 です

I lived in Greece since 2005 until 2015.

。私は 2005 年から 2015 年までギリシャに住んでい

I'm sure you got that one. We don't use 'since' in this context but 'from'.

ました。 この文脈では「since」 ではなく「from」を使用します。

I lived in Greece from 2005 until or to 2015.

私は 2005 年から 2015 年までギリシャに住んでいました

Remember that we only use 'since' when we're talking about from the past until now.

。過去から現在までについて話しているときにのみ「since」を使用することに注意してください。

And one last thing to mention to you about the word 'from'.

そして、「from」という言葉について、最後にもう 1 つお知らせします。

When you use 'from' for a future time, it's common to add the word 'as'.

「from」を将来の時間として使用する場合、「as」という単語を追加するのが一般的です。

For example: As from tomorrow, I'll start studying an hour earlier.

例 : 明日から、1 時間早く勉強を始めます。

You can also say: As of tomorrow, I'll start studying an hour earlier.

次のように言うこともできます : 明日から、1 時間早く勉強を始めます。

'As of' is slightly more formal than 'as from', but they have the same meaning.

「as of」は「as from」よりも少しフォーマルですが、意味は同じです。
