Common mistakes | prepositions of time for, since, from

In this lesson we're going to look at some common  mistakes I often hear with the prepositions

Now, let's look at some common mistakes with the prepositions 'for', 'since', and 'from'

and see if you can correct them.

Starting with common mistake No.1.

흔한 실수 1번부터 시작합니다.

Find the mistake in this sentence:

이 문장에서 오류를 찾으세요.

I have been living in Greece for 10 years between 2005 and 2015.

저는 2005년에서 2015년 사이에 10년 동안 그리스에 살았습니다.

A very common mistake is to think that every time we see the word 'for' and a length of time,

매우 흔한 실수는 'for'라는 단어와 그 기간을 볼 때마다

we should use the Present Perfect Continuous tense.

현재완료를 사용해야 한다고 생각하는 것입니다. 지속적인 시제.

That is not the case.

그렇지 않습니다.

For example in this sentence, it's clear that the person no longer lives in Greece.

They lived in Greece between 2005 and 2015.

그들은 2005년에서 2015년 사이에 그리스에 살았습니다.

Right! Let's look at common mistake No.2.

Here's the sentence for you to correct:

수정해야 할 문장은 다음과 같습니다.

I've been here since two hours.

2시간 전부터 여기에 있었습니다.

I think you got that. It's not since two hours, but...

나는 당신이 그것을 가지고 있다고 생각합니다. 2시간 이후가 아니라...

for two hours.

2시간 동안입니다.

Right, let's look at common mistake No. 3.

자, 일반적인 실수 3번을 살펴보겠습니다.

Here's the sentence: We've consulted three lawyers for the past two weeks.

다음은 문장입니다. 지난 2주 동안 3명의 변호사와 상담했습니다.

What's the mistake here?

여기서 실수는 무엇입니까?

Right! Here we're using 'for' by mistake.

오른쪽! 여기서 우리는 실수로 'for'를 사용하고 있습니다.

The proposition we need here is 'in'.

여기서 필요한 명제는 'in'입니다.

We've consulted three lawyers in the past two weeks.

지난 2주 동안 3명의 변호사와 상담했습니다.

Because we're referring to three completed actions.

세 가지 완료된 작업을 언급하고 있기 때문입니다. 과거에 시작되어 여전히 계속되는 작업을

We can only use 'for' if we're referring  to an action that started in the past and still continues.

언급하는 경우에만 'for'를 사용할 수 있습니다 .

For example:  We've been working on this problem for the past two weeks.

예: 지난 2주 동안 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 노력했습니다.

Okay! Common mistake No. 4.

좋아요! 흔한 실수 4번.

I've been here from two o'clock.

2시부터 여기 있었어요.

I'm sure you got that one. It's...

나는 당신이 그것을 가지고 있다고 확신합니다. 그건...

I've been here since two o'clock.

2시부터 여기 있었어요.

It's important for you to understand what the word 'since' actually means.

'since'라는 단어의 실제 의미를 이해하는 것이 중요합니다.

'Since' means from a time in the past until now.

'Since'는 과거부터 현재까지를 의미합니다.

And that's why you can only use 'since' with Present Perfect Continuous and Present Perfect tenses,

그렇기 때문에

which are tenses related to actions that started in the past,  or states that started in the past

과거에 시작된 행동과 관련된 시제 또는 과거에 시작되어

and continue until now.

지금까지 계속되는 상태인 현재 완료 시제와 현재 완료 시제에만 '이후'를 사용할 수 있습니다.

So, when the action or state continues, we always use the word 'since'.

따라서 동작이나 상태가 계속될 때 항상 'since'라는 단어를 사용합니다.

For example:  I've been living in Thailand since 2015.

예: 저는 2015년부터 태국에 살고 있습니다.

Or: I have lived in Thailand since 2015.

또는 저는 2015년부터 태국에 살았습니다.

I've been here since 9 a.m.

저는 오전 9시부터 여기에 있었습니다.

Right! Let's look at mistake No. 5.

맞습니다! 5번 실수를 살펴보겠습니다.

We've been working on this issue since two weeks ago.

2주 전부터 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 노력했습니다.

How could you improve this sentence?

이 문장을 어떻게 개선할 수 있습니까?

Now, although this sentence is not completely wrong,

자, 이 문장이 완전히 틀린 것은 아니지만

if you're going to say 'two weeks', why make it so long?

'2주'라고 할 거라면 왜 이렇게 길게 할까요?

Why say 'since two weeks ago'? Just use the preposition 'for'.

왜 '2주 전부터'라고 말합니까? 전치사 'for'만 사용하세요.

We've been working on this issue for two weeks.

2주 동안 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 노력했습니다.

Okay, let's look at mistake No. 6.

자, 실수 6번을 봅시다.

I've been here since the shop has opened.

가게가 열릴 때부터 여기 있었어요.

The mistake here is using the Present Perfect tense instead of Past Simple in the 'since' clause.

여기서 실수는 'since' 절에서 과거 단순 대신 현재 완료 시제를 사용하는 것입니다.

In the 'since' clause, always use the Past Simple tense.

'since' 절에서는 항상 과거 단순 시제를 사용하세요.

So: I've been here since the shop opened.

그래서: 가게가 열렸을 때부터 여기 있었어요.

And finally, mistake No. 7.

마지막으로 실수 7번입니다.

I lived in Greece since 2005 until 2015.

저는 2005년부터 2015년까지 그리스에서 살았습니다

I'm sure you got that one. We don't use 'since' in this context but 'from'.

. 이 문맥에서는 'since'를 사용하지 않고 'from'을 사용합니다.

I lived in Greece from 2005 until or to 2015.

저는 2005년부터 2015년까지 그리스에 살았습니다.

Remember that we only use 'since' when we're talking about from the past until now.

과거부터 지금까지에 대해 이야기할 때는 'since'만 사용한다는 점을 기억하세요.

And one last thing to mention to you about the word 'from'.

그리고 마지막으로 'from'이라는 단어에 대해 언급할 것이 있습니다.

When you use 'from' for a future time, it's common to add the word 'as'.

미래에 'from'을 사용할 때는 일반적으로 'as'라는 단어를 추가합니다.

For example: As from tomorrow, I'll start studying an hour earlier.

예: 내일부터 한 시간 일찍 공부를 시작하겠습니다. 다음과 같이

You can also say: As of tomorrow, I'll start studying an hour earlier.

말할 수도 있습니다. 내일부터 한 시간 일찍 공부를 시작하겠습니다.

'As of' is slightly more formal than 'as from', but they have the same meaning.

'As of'는 'as from'보다 약간 형식적이지만 의미는 같습니다.
