Common mistakes | prepositions of time for, since, from

In this lesson we're going to look at some common  mistakes I often hear with the prepositions

'for', 'since', and 'from'.

"for", "since" e "from".

Remember that just learning  the rules is not enough to activate something into your own usage.

Now, let's look at some common mistakes with the prepositions 'for', 'since', and 'from'

and see if you can correct them.

Starting with common mistake No.1.

A partire dall'errore comune n.1.

Find the mistake in this sentence:

Trova l'errore in questa frase:

I have been living in Greece for 10 years between 2005 and 2015.

ho vissuto in Grecia per 10 anni tra il 2005 e il 2015.

A very common mistake is to think that every time we see the word 'for' and a length of time,

Un errore molto comune è pensare che ogni volta che vediamo la parola "for" e per un periodo di tempo,

we should use the Present Perfect Continuous tense.

dovremmo usare il Present Perfect Tempo continuo.

That is not the case.

Questo non è il caso.

For example in this sentence, it's clear that the person no longer lives in Greece.

Ad esempio, in questa frase, è chiaro che la persona non vive più in Grecia.

They lived in Greece between 2005 and 2015.

Right! Let's look at common mistake No.2.

Here's the sentence for you to correct:

Ecco la frase da correggere:

I've been here since two hours.

sono qui da due ore.

I think you got that. It's not since two hours, but...

Penso che tu abbia capito. Non da due ore, ma...

for two hours.

da due ore.

Right, let's look at common mistake No. 3.

Bene, diamo un'occhiata all'errore comune n. 3.

Here's the sentence: We've consulted three lawyers for the past two weeks.

Ecco la frase: abbiamo consultato tre avvocati nelle ultime due settimane.

What's the mistake here?

Qual è l'errore qui?

Right! Here we're using 'for' by mistake.

Giusto! Qui stiamo usando 'for' per errore.

The proposition we need here is 'in'.

La proposizione di cui abbiamo bisogno qui è "in".

We've consulted three lawyers in the past two weeks.

Abbiamo consultato tre avvocati nelle ultime due settimane.

Because we're referring to three completed actions.

Perché ci riferiamo a tre azioni completate.

We can only use 'for' if we're referring  to an action that started in the past and still continues.

Possiamo usare "for" solo se ci riferiamo a un'azione che è iniziata nel passato e continua ancora.

For example:  We've been working on this problem for the past two weeks.

Ad esempio: abbiamo lavorato a questo problema nelle ultime due settimane.

Okay! Common mistake No. 4.

Va bene! Errore comune n. 4.

I've been here from two o'clock.

Sono qui dalle due.

I'm sure you got that one. It's...

Sono sicuro che ce l'hai. È...

I've been here since two o'clock.

sono qui dalle due in punto.

It's important for you to understand what the word 'since' actually means.

È importante che tu capisca il significato effettivo della parola "da allora".

'Since' means from a time in the past until now.

'Da quando' significa da un tempo nel passato fino ad ora.

And that's why you can only use 'since' with Present Perfect Continuous and Present Perfect tenses,

Ed è per questo che puoi utilizzare "since" solo con i tempi Present Perfect Continuous e Present Perfect,

which are tenses related to actions that started in the past,  or states that started in the past

che sono tempi relativi ad azioni iniziate nel passato o stati che sono iniziati nel passato

and continue until now.

e continuano fino ad ora.

So, when the action or state continues, we always use the word 'since'.

Quindi, quando l'azione o lo stato continua, usiamo sempre la parola "da allora".

For example:  I've been living in Thailand since 2015.

Ad esempio: vivo in Thailandia dal 2015.

Or: I have lived in Thailand since 2015.

Oppure: vivo in Thailandia dal 2015.

I've been here since 9 a.m.

Sono qui dalle 9:00.

Right! Let's look at mistake No. 5.

Esatto! Esaminiamo l'errore n. 5.

We've been working on this issue since two weeks ago.

Stiamo lavorando a questo problema da due settimane.

How could you improve this sentence?

Come potresti migliorare questa frase?

Now, although this sentence is not completely wrong,

Ora, anche se questa frase non è del tutto sbagliata,

if you're going to say 'two weeks', why make it so long?

se hai intenzione di dire "due settimane", perché farla così lunga?

Why say 'since two weeks ago'? Just use the preposition 'for'.

Perché dire "da due settimane fa"? Basta usare la preposizione "per".

We've been working on this issue for two weeks.

Stiamo lavorando a questo problema da due settimane.

Okay, let's look at mistake No. 6.

Ok, diamo un'occhiata all'errore n. 6.

I've been here since the shop has opened.

Sono qui dall'apertura del negozio.

The mistake here is using the Present Perfect tense instead of Past Simple in the 'since' clause.

L'errore qui è usare il Present Perfect invece del Past Simple nella clausola "since".

In the 'since' clause, always use the Past Simple tense.

Nella clausola "since", usa sempre il passato semplice.

So: I've been here since the shop opened.

Quindi: sono qui dall'apertura del negozio.

And finally, mistake No. 7.

E infine, errore numero 7.

I lived in Greece since 2005 until 2015.

Ho vissuto in Grecia dal 2005 al 2015.

I'm sure you got that one. We don't use 'since' in this context but 'from'.

Sono sicuro che hai capito. In questo contesto non usiamo "since" ma "from".

I lived in Greece from 2005 until or to 2015.

Ho vissuto in Grecia dal 2005 fino al 2015.

Remember that we only use 'since' when we're talking about from the past until now.

Ricorda che usiamo "since" solo quando parliamo dal passato fino ad ora.

And one last thing to mention to you about the word 'from'.

E un'ultima cosa da dirti sulla parola "da".

When you use 'from' for a future time, it's common to add the word 'as'.

Quando usi "from" per un tempo futuro, è comune aggiungere la parola "as".

For example: As from tomorrow, I'll start studying an hour earlier.

Ad esempio: da domani inizierò a studiare un'ora prima.

You can also say: As of tomorrow, I'll start studying an hour earlier.

Puoi anche dire: da domani inizierò a studiare un'ora prima.

'As of' is slightly more formal than 'as from', but they have the same meaning.

"As of" è leggermente più formale di "as from", ma hanno lo stesso significato.
