Today, I'm going to share with you a four-step method that I know from experience  will help you to expand your active vocabulary.

Aujourd'hui, je vais partager avec vous une méthode en quatre étapes qui, je le sais par expérience , vous aidera à élargir votre vocabulaire actif.

By active vocabulary, I mean vocabulary that we can use spontaneously when we speak.

Par vocabulaire actif, j'entends un vocabulaire que nous pouvons utiliser spontanément lorsque nous parlons.

Okay! Let me start by telling you what I think is not the best way to improve your active vocabulary

Many of us think that reading is the best way to expand our vocabulary.

Beaucoup d'entre nous pensent que la lecture est le meilleur moyen d'élargir notre vocabulaire.

There are two reasons for this.

Il y a deux raisons à cela.

We start learning English at school through reading and translation.

Nous commençons à apprendre l'anglais à l'école par la lecture et la traduction.

This becomes a habit.

Cela devient une habitude.

Also, most of us have a better visual memory than an auditory memory.

De plus, la plupart d'entre nous ont une meilleure mémoire visuelle qu'une mémoire auditive.

So, we think that we will remember a new word better if we see it written down.

Donc, nous pensons que nous nous souviendrons mieux d'un nouveau mot si nous le voyons écrit.

Now, of course, reading expands our passive vocabulary and  will improve our reading comprehension.

Maintenant, bien sûr, la lecture élargit notre vocabulaire passif et améliore notre compréhension en lecture.

And maybe also our writing skills.

Et peut-être aussi nos capacités rédactionnelles.

But it will not help us with our listening and speaking skills at all.

Let's see why with an example.

Let's say you read this sentence in a book and you don't know the underlined word:

Supposons que vous lisiez cette phrase dans un livre et que vous ne connaissiez pas le mot souligné :

This will put our economic growth in 'new word', and therefore, it's a danger we cannot ignore.

cela mettra notre croissance économique dans un "nouveau mot", et par conséquent, c'est un danger que nous ne pouvons pas ignorer.

From the context, you can easily figure out that this new word means...

D'après le contexte, vous pouvez facilement comprendre que ce nouveau mot signifie...

'danger'.

Let's say you like this word and decide to learn it.

Disons que vous aimez ce mot et que vous décidez de l'apprendre.

So, you write it down on a flashcard or in your notebook, and you  write its translation in your own language next to it.

Donc, vous l'écrivez sur une carte mémoire ou dans votre cahier, et vous écrivez sa traduction dans votre propre langue à côté.

The way you learned to do it at school.

La façon dont vous avez appris à le faire à l'école.

So, what is the problem?

Alors quel est le problème?

Pronunciation!

Prononciation!

To pronounce a new English word correctly, you need to know two things.

Pour prononcer correctement un nouveau mot anglais, vous devez connaître deux choses.

Firstly, which syllable takes the stress.

Premièrement, quelle syllabe prend le stress.

And secondly, how each vowel is pronounced.

Et deuxièmement, comment chaque voyelle est prononcée.

Because in English, each vowel letter produces different vowel sounds.

Parce qu'en anglais, chaque lettre de voyelle produit des sons de voyelle différents.

 For example, letter 'e' can be pronounced in four different ways.

Par exemple, la lettre "e" peut être prononcée de quatre manières différentes.

It can be pronounced as 'ee'. Redo.

Il peut être prononcé comme 'ee'. Refaire.

It can be pronounced as 'i'. Repeat.

Il peut être prononcé comme 'i'. Répéter.

It can be pronounced as 'eh'. Sent.

Il peut être prononcé comme 'eh'. Expédié.

And it can also be pronounced as 'uh'. Absent.

Et il peut aussi être prononcé comme 'uh'. Absent.

So, let's now see how this new word is pronounced.

Alors, voyons maintenant comment ce nouveau mot est prononcé.

First, we have to decide where the stress is.

Tout d'abord, nous devons décider où se trouve le stress.

In this word, the stress is on the... first syllable.

Dans ce mot, l'accent est mis sur la... première syllabe.

Then, we need to find out what the letter 'e' sounds like.

Ensuite, nous devons découvrir à quoi ressemble la lettre "e".

Is it 'eh', or 'ee', or 'uh'?

Est-ce 'eh', ou 'ee', ou 'euh' ?

It is 'eh'.

C'est 'hein'.

And now in this word, the letter 'o' is silent.

Et maintenant, dans ce mot, la lettre 'o' est muette.

So, the pronunciation of this word is jeopardy.

Ainsi, la prononciation de ce mot est compromise.

jeopardy.

péril.

Now, your pronunciation doesn't have to be perfect.

Maintenant, votre prononciation n'a pas besoin d'être parfaite.

But, if you mispronounce a word completely, for example, if you say: Jeopardy.

Mais, si vous prononcez complètement un mot, par exemple, si vous dites : Jeopardy.

You will not be able to hear this word when others say it.

Vous ne pourrez pas entendre ce mot lorsque d'autres le prononceront.

And others won't be able to understand you when you say it.

Et les autres ne pourront pas vous comprendre lorsque vous le direz.

So, what is a better way of expanding your active vocabulary?

Alors, quelle est la meilleure façon d'élargir votre vocabulaire actif ?

Here's the four-step method I would recommend.

Voici la méthode en quatre étapes que je recommanderais.

Step 1. Listen first.

Étape 1. Écoutez d'abord.

Choose a topic you're interested in.

Choisissez un sujet qui vous intéresse.

Find a YouTube clip, or a podcast, or an audio book on that topic.

Recherchez un clip YouTube, un podcast ou un livre audio sur ce sujet.

Listen to it without subtitles once just to get familiar with the context.

Écoutez-le une fois sans sous-titres pour vous familiariser avec le contexte.

Step 2. Listen and read.

Étape 2. Écoutez et lisez.

Listen again, this time with the subtitles on or with the text in front of you.

Écoutez à nouveau, cette fois avec les sous-titres ou avec le texte devant vous.

When you hear and see a new word you'd like to learn, stop!

Lorsque vous entendez et voyez un nouveau mot que vous aimeriez apprendre, arrêtez !

Write it on a flashcard.

Écrivez-le sur une flashcard.

Step 3. Practice pronunciation.

Étape 3. Entraînez-vous à la prononciation.

When you've collected about five interesting new words, go to an online dictionary.

Lorsque vous avez collecté environ cinq nouveaux mots intéressants, accédez à un dictionnaire en ligne.

Listen and repeat each word several times.

Écoutez et répétez chaque mot plusieurs fois.

Then write its pronunciation also on your flashcard.

Ensuite, écrivez également sa prononciation sur votre flashcard.

You can use the symbols in the dictionary or you can create your own symbols.

Vous pouvez utiliser les symboles du dictionnaire ou créer vos propres symboles.

And finally, step 4. A very important step.

Et enfin, étape 4. Une étape très importante.

Choose an example sentence.

Choisissez un exemple de phrase.

Copy one good example sentence from the dictionary on the back of your flashcard.

Copiez un bon exemple de phrase du dictionnaire au dos de votre flashcard.

And make sure that you underline the other important words too.

Et assurez-vous de souligner également les autres mots importants.

For example, in our sentence:

Par exemple, dans notre phrase :

This will put our economic growth in jeopardy.

Cela mettra notre croissance économique en perte.

The other important words are... 'put' (the verb).

Les autres mots importants sont... "mettre" (le verbe).

And 'in' (the preposition).

Et 'dans' (la préposition).

So, you want to learn: Put in jeopardy as a collocation.

Donc, vous voulez apprendre : Mettre en danger en tant que collocation.

This is a really important step in allowing you  to create correct sentences with this new word.

Il s'agit d'une étape très importante pour vous permettre de créer des phrases correctes avec ce nouveau mot.

Of course, with this method, you will learn  fewer new words in the time that you spend studying.

Bien sûr, avec cette méthode, vous apprendrez moins de nouveaux mots pendant le temps que vous passerez à étudier.

But, you will be able to use these new words reflexively when you speak.

Mais vous pourrez utiliser ces nouveaux mots de manière réflexive lorsque vous parlerez.

You will change from a passive learner of vocabulary to an active explorer of vocabulary.

Vous passerez d'un apprenant passif de vocabulaire à un explorateur actif de vocabulaire.

And this will make you a much more confident speaker.

Et cela fera de vous un orateur beaucoup plus confiant.

To finish, I've got a little homework for you.

Here are three other words that you can go and explore this method with.

Voici trois autres mots avec lesquels vous pouvez explorer cette méthode.
