Today, I'm going to share with you a four-step method that I know from experience  will help you to expand your active vocabulary.

Hoy voy a compartir contigo un método de cuatro pasos que sé por experiencia que te ayudará a ampliar tu vocabulario activo.

By active vocabulary, I mean vocabulary that we can use spontaneously when we speak.

Por vocabulario activo, me refiero al vocabulario que podemos usar espontáneamente cuando hablamos.

Okay! Let me start by telling you what I think is not the best way to improve your active vocabulary

Many of us think that reading is the best way to expand our vocabulary.

Muchos de nosotros pensamos que leer es la mejor manera de ampliar nuestro vocabulario.

There are two reasons for this.

Hay dos razones para esto.

We start learning English at school through reading and translation.

Comenzamos a aprender inglés en la escuela a través de la lectura y la traducción.

This becomes a habit.

Esto se convierte en un hábito.

Also, most of us have a better visual memory than an auditory memory.

Además, la mayoría de nosotros tenemos una mejor memoria visual que una memoria auditiva.

So, we think that we will remember a new word better if we see it written down.

Now, of course, reading expands our passive vocabulary and  will improve our reading comprehension.

And maybe also our writing skills.

But it will not help us with our listening and speaking skills at all.

Let's see why with an example.

Veamos por qué con un ejemplo.

Let's say you read this sentence in a book and you don't know the underlined word:

Supongamos que lee esta oración en un libro y no conoce la palabra subrayada:

This will put our economic growth in 'new word', and therefore, it's a danger we cannot ignore.

esto pondrá nuestro crecimiento económico en 'palabra nueva' y, por lo tanto, es un peligro que no podemos ignorar.

From the context, you can easily figure out that this new word means...

Por el contexto, puedes deducir fácilmente que esta nueva palabra significa...

'danger'.

Let's say you like this word and decide to learn it.

Digamos que te gusta esta palabra y decides aprenderla.

So, you write it down on a flashcard or in your notebook, and you  write its translation in your own language next to it.

The way you learned to do it at school.

So, what is the problem?

Pronunciation!

To pronounce a new English word correctly, you need to know two things.

Para pronunciar correctamente una nueva palabra en inglés, necesitas saber dos cosas.

Firstly, which syllable takes the stress.

En primer lugar, qué sílaba lleva el acento.

And secondly, how each vowel is pronounced.

Y en segundo lugar, cómo se pronuncia cada vocal.

Because in English, each vowel letter produces different vowel sounds.

Porque en inglés, cada letra de la vocal produce diferentes sonidos de vocales.

 For example, letter 'e' can be pronounced in four different ways.

Por ejemplo, la letra 'e' se puede pronunciar de cuatro formas diferentes.

It can be pronounced as 'ee'. Redo.

Se puede pronunciar como 'ee'. Rehacer.

It can be pronounced as 'i'. Repeat.

Se puede pronunciar como 'i'. Repetir.

It can be pronounced as 'eh'. Sent.

Se puede pronunciar como 'eh'. Enviado.

And it can also be pronounced as 'uh'. Absent.

Y también se puede pronunciar como 'uh'. Ausente.

So, let's now see how this new word is pronounced.

Entonces, veamos ahora cómo se pronuncia esta nueva palabra.

First, we have to decide where the stress is.

Primero, tenemos que decidir dónde está el estrés.

In this word, the stress is on the... first syllable.

En esta palabra, el acento está en la... primera sílaba.

Then, we need to find out what the letter 'e' sounds like.

Luego, debemos averiguar cómo suena la letra 'e'.

Is it 'eh', or 'ee', or 'uh'?

¿Es 'eh', o 'ee', o 'uh'?

It is 'eh'.

es 'eh'.

And now in this word, the letter 'o' is silent.

Y ahora en esta palabra, la letra 'o' es muda.

So, the pronunciation of this word is jeopardy.

Entonces, la pronunciación de esta palabra es peligrosa.

jeopardy.

Now, your pronunciation doesn't have to be perfect.

Ahora, tu pronunciación no tiene que ser perfecta.

But, if you mispronounce a word completely, for example, if you say: Jeopardy.

Pero, si pronuncias una palabra completamente mal, por ejemplo, si dices: Jeopardy.

You will not be able to hear this word when others say it.

No podrá escuchar esta palabra cuando otros la digan.

And others won't be able to understand you when you say it.

Y los demás no podrán entenderte cuando lo digas.

So, what is a better way of expanding your active vocabulary?

Entonces, ¿cuál es una mejor manera de expandir tu vocabulario activo?

Here's the four-step method I would recommend.

Este es el método de cuatro pasos que recomendaría.

Step 1. Listen first.

Paso 1. Escucha primero.

Choose a topic you're interested in.

Elige un tema que te interese.

Find a YouTube clip, or a podcast, or an audio book on that topic.

Busca un clip de YouTube, un podcast o un audiolibro sobre ese tema.

Listen to it without subtitles once just to get familiar with the context.

Escúchalo sin subtítulos una vez solo para familiarizarte con el contexto.

Step 2. Listen and read.

Paso 2. Escucha y lee.

Listen again, this time with the subtitles on or with the text in front of you.

Escuche de nuevo, esta vez con los subtítulos activados o con el texto frente a usted.

When you hear and see a new word you'd like to learn, stop!

Cuando escuches y veas una palabra nueva que te gustaría aprender, ¡detente!

Write it on a flashcard.

Escríbelo en una flashcard.

Step 3. Practice pronunciation.

Paso 3. Practica la pronunciación.

When you've collected about five interesting new words, go to an online dictionary.

Cuando haya recopilado unas cinco palabras nuevas e interesantes, vaya a un diccionario en línea.

Listen and repeat each word several times.

Escucha y repite cada palabra varias veces.

Then write its pronunciation also on your flashcard.

Luego escribe su pronunciación también en tu tarjeta de memoria flash.

You can use the symbols in the dictionary or you can create your own symbols.

Puede usar los símbolos del diccionario o puede crear sus propios símbolos.

And finally, step 4. A very important step.

Y finalmente, el paso 4. Un paso muy importante.

Choose an example sentence.

Elige una oración de ejemplo.

Copy one good example sentence from the dictionary on the back of your flashcard.

Copie una buena oración de ejemplo del diccionario en el reverso de su tarjeta.

And make sure that you underline the other important words too.

Y asegúrese de subrayar las otras palabras importantes también.

For example, in our sentence:

Por ejemplo, en nuestra oración:

This will put our economic growth in jeopardy.

Esto pondrá en peligro nuestro crecimiento económico.

The other important words are... 'put' (the verb).

Las otras palabras importantes son... 'poner' (el verbo).

And 'in' (the preposition).

Y 'in' (la preposición).

So, you want to learn: Put in jeopardy as a collocation.

Entonces, quiere aprender: poner en peligro como una colocación.

This is a really important step in allowing you  to create correct sentences with this new word.

Este es un paso realmente importante que le permite crear oraciones correctas con esta nueva palabra.

Of course, with this method, you will learn  fewer new words in the time that you spend studying.

Por supuesto, con este método aprenderás menos palabras nuevas en el tiempo que dedicas a estudiar.

But, you will be able to use these new words reflexively when you speak.

Pero podrá usar estas nuevas palabras reflexivamente cuando hable.

You will change from a passive learner of vocabulary to an active explorer of vocabulary.

Pasará de ser un aprendiz pasivo de vocabulario a un explorador activo de vocabulario.

And this will make you a much more confident speaker.

To finish, I've got a little homework for you.

Here are three other words that you can go and explore this method with.
