Today, I'm going to share with you a four-step method that I know from experience  will help you to expand your active vocabulary.

By active vocabulary, I mean vocabulary that we can use spontaneously when we speak.

Per vocabolario attivo intendo il vocabolario che possiamo usare spontaneamente quando parliamo.

Okay! Let me start by telling you what I think is not the best way to improve your active vocabulary

Many of us think that reading is the best way to expand our vocabulary.

Molti di noi pensano che leggere sia il modo migliore per ampliare il proprio vocabolario.

There are two reasons for this.

Ci sono due ragioni per questo.

We start learning English at school through reading and translation.

Iniziamo a imparare l'inglese a scuola attraverso la lettura e la traduzione.

This becomes a habit.

Also, most of us have a better visual memory than an auditory memory.

So, we think that we will remember a new word better if we see it written down.

Now, of course, reading expands our passive vocabulary and  will improve our reading comprehension.

And maybe also our writing skills.

But it will not help us with our listening and speaking skills at all.

Let's see why with an example.

Let's say you read this sentence in a book and you don't know the underlined word:

This will put our economic growth in 'new word', and therefore, it's a danger we cannot ignore.

questo metterà la nostra crescita economica in una "nuova parola" e, pertanto, è un pericolo che non possiamo ignorare.

From the context, you can easily figure out that this new word means...

Dal contesto, puoi facilmente capire che questa nuova parola significa...

Let's say you like this word and decide to learn it.

So, you write it down on a flashcard or in your notebook, and you  write its translation in your own language next to it.

The way you learned to do it at school.

So, what is the problem?

To pronounce a new English word correctly, you need to know two things.

Per pronunciare correttamente una nuova parola inglese, devi sapere due cose.

Firstly, which syllable takes the stress.

In primo luogo, quale sillaba prende l'accento.

And secondly, how each vowel is pronounced.

E in secondo luogo, come viene pronunciata ogni vocale.

Because in English, each vowel letter produces different vowel sounds.

Perché in inglese ogni lettera vocale produce suoni vocalici diversi.

 For example, letter 'e' can be pronounced in four different ways.

Ad esempio, la lettera "e" può essere pronunciata in quattro modi diversi.

It can be pronounced as 'ee'. Redo.

Può essere pronunciato come 'ee'. Rifare.

It can be pronounced as 'i'. Repeat.

Può essere pronunciato come 'i'. Ripetere.

It can be pronounced as 'eh'. Sent.

Può essere pronunciato come 'eh'. Inviato.

And it can also be pronounced as 'uh'. Absent.

E può anche essere pronunciato come 'uh'. Assente.

So, let's now see how this new word is pronounced.

First, we have to decide where the stress is.

Innanzitutto, dobbiamo decidere dove si trova lo stress.

In this word, the stress is on the... first syllable.

In questa parola, l'accento è sulla... prima sillaba.

Then, we need to find out what the letter 'e' sounds like.

Quindi, dobbiamo scoprire come suona la lettera "e".

Is it 'eh', or 'ee', or 'uh'?

È 'eh', o 'ee', o 'uh'?

It is 'eh'.

È "ehi".

And now in this word, the letter 'o' is silent.

E ora in questa parola, la lettera "o" tace.

So, the pronunciation of this word is jeopardy.

Quindi, la pronuncia di questa parola è a rischio.

jeopardy.

Now, your pronunciation doesn't have to be perfect.

Ora, la tua pronuncia non deve essere perfetta.

But, if you mispronounce a word completely, for example, if you say: Jeopardy.

You will not be able to hear this word when others say it.

And others won't be able to understand you when you say it.

So, what is a better way of expanding your active vocabulary?

Here's the four-step method I would recommend.

Step 1. Listen first.

Passaggio 1. Ascolta prima.

Choose a topic you're interested in.

Find a YouTube clip, or a podcast, or an audio book on that topic.

Trova un clip di YouTube, un podcast o un audiolibro sull'argomento.

Listen to it without subtitles once just to get familiar with the context.

Ascoltalo senza sottotitoli una volta solo per familiarizzare con il contesto.

Step 2. Listen and read.

Passaggio 2. Ascolta e leggi.

Listen again, this time with the subtitles on or with the text in front of you.

Ascolta di nuovo, questa volta con i sottotitoli attivati o con il testo davanti a te.

When you hear and see a new word you'd like to learn, stop!

Quando senti e vedi una nuova parola che vorresti imparare, fermati!

Write it on a flashcard.

Scrivilo su una flashcard.

Step 3. Practice pronunciation.

Passaggio 3. Esercitati con la pronuncia.

When you've collected about five interesting new words, go to an online dictionary.

Quando hai raccolto circa cinque nuove parole interessanti, vai su un dizionario online.

Listen and repeat each word several times.

Ascolta e ripeti ogni parola più volte.

Then write its pronunciation also on your flashcard.

Quindi scrivi la sua pronuncia anche sulla tua flashcard.

You can use the symbols in the dictionary or you can create your own symbols.

Puoi utilizzare i simboli nel dizionario oppure puoi creare i tuoi simboli.

And finally, step 4. A very important step.

E infine, passaggio 4. Un passaggio molto importante.

Choose an example sentence.

Scegli una frase di esempio.

Copy one good example sentence from the dictionary on the back of your flashcard.

Copia una buona frase di esempio dal dizionario sul retro della tua flashcard.

And make sure that you underline the other important words too.

E assicurati di sottolineare anche le altre parole importanti.

For example, in our sentence:

Ad esempio, nella nostra frase:

This will put our economic growth in jeopardy.

Questo metterà a repentaglio la nostra crescita economica.

The other important words are... 'put' (the verb).

Le altre parole importanti sono... 'put' (il verbo).

And 'in' (the preposition).

E 'in' (la preposizione).

So, you want to learn: Put in jeopardy as a collocation.

Quindi, vuoi imparare: mettere in pericolo come collocazione.

This is a really important step in allowing you  to create correct sentences with this new word.

Questo è un passaggio davvero importante per consentirti di creare frasi corrette con questa nuova parola.

Of course, with this method, you will learn  fewer new words in the time that you spend studying.

Ovviamente, con questo metodo imparerai meno parole nuove nel tempo che dedichi allo studio.

But, you will be able to use these new words reflexively when you speak.

Ma sarai in grado di usare queste nuove parole in modo riflessivo quando parli.

You will change from a passive learner of vocabulary to an active explorer of vocabulary.

And this will make you a much more confident speaker.

To finish, I've got a little homework for you.

Here are three other words that you can go and explore this method with.
