Today, I'm going to share with you a four-step method that I know from experience  will help you to expand your active vocabulary.

By active vocabulary, I mean vocabulary that we can use spontaneously when we speak.

능동적 어휘란 우리가 말할 때 즉흥적으로 사용할 수 있는 어휘를 의미합니다.

Many of us think that reading is the best way to expand our vocabulary.

우리 중 많은 사람들은 읽기가 어휘를 확장하는 가장 좋은 방법이라고 생각합니다.

There are two reasons for this.

여기에는 두 가지 이유가 있습니다.

We start learning English at school through reading and translation.

우리는 읽기와 번역을 통해 학교에서 영어 학습을 시작합니다.

This becomes a habit.

이것은 습관이 됩니다.

Also, most of us have a better visual memory than an auditory memory.

So, we think that we will remember a new word better if we see it written down.

Now, of course, reading expands our passive vocabulary and  will improve our reading comprehension.

And maybe also our writing skills.

그리고 어쩌면 우리의 글쓰기 능력도요.

But it will not help us with our listening and speaking skills at all.

Let's see why with an example.

예를 들어 그 이유를 살펴보겠습니다.

Let's say you read this sentence in a book and you don't know the underlined word:

책에서 이 문장을 읽고 밑줄이 그어진 단어를 모른다고 가정해 보겠습니다.

This will put our economic growth in 'new word', and therefore, it's a danger we cannot ignore.

이는 우리의 경제 성장을 '새로운 단어'로 만들 것이므로 무시할 수 없는 위험입니다.

From the context, you can easily figure out that this new word means...

문맥을 보면 이 새로운 단어가 '위험'을 의미한다는 것을 쉽게 알 수 있습니다

'danger'.

Let's say you like this word and decide to learn it.

이 단어가 마음에 들어서 배우기로 결정했다고 가정해 보겠습니다.

So, you write it down on a flashcard or in your notebook, and you  write its translation in your own language next to it.

따라서 플래시 카드나 공책에 적고 그 옆에 모국어로 번역을 적습니다.

The way you learned to do it at school.

학교에서 배운 방식입니다.

So, what is the problem?

그래서, 문제가 무엇입니까?

Pronunciation!

발음!

To pronounce a new English word correctly, you need to know two things.

새로운 영어 단어를 올바르게 발음하려면 두 가지를 알아야 합니다.

Firstly, which syllable takes the stress.

첫째, 강세를 받는 음절입니다.

And secondly, how each vowel is pronounced.

두 번째는 각 모음이 어떻게 발음되는지입니다.

Because in English, each vowel letter produces different vowel sounds.

영어에서는 각 모음이 다른 모음 소리를 내기 때문입니다.

 For example, letter 'e' can be pronounced in four different ways.

예를 들어 문자 'e'는 네 가지 방식으로 발음될 수 있습니다.

It can be pronounced as 'ee'. Redo.

'이'로 발음할 수 있습니다. 다시 하다.

It can be pronounced as 'i'. Repeat.

'이'로 발음할 수 있습니다. 반복하다.

It can be pronounced as 'eh'. Sent.

'에'로 발음할 수 있습니다. 전송된.

And it can also be pronounced as 'uh'. Absent.

그리고 '어'로도 발음할 수 있습니다. 결석한.

So, let's now see how this new word is pronounced.

이제 이 새로운 단어가 어떻게 발음되는지 살펴보겠습니다.

First, we have to decide where the stress is.

먼저 스트레스가 어디에 있는지 결정해야 합니다.

In this word, the stress is on the... first syllable.

이 단어에서 강세는... 첫 음절에 있습니다.

Then, we need to find out what the letter 'e' sounds like.

그런 다음 문자 'e'가 어떻게 들리는지 알아내야 합니다. '에

Is it 'eh', or 'ee', or 'uh'?

'인가, '이'인가, 아니면 '어'인가?

It is 'eh'.

'에'입니다.

And now in this word, the letter 'o' is silent.

그리고 지금 이 단어에서 문자 'o'는 묵음입니다.

So, the pronunciation of this word is jeopardy.

따라서 이 단어의 발음이 위험합니다.

jeopardy.

위험.

Now, your pronunciation doesn't have to be perfect.

이제 발음이 완벽할 필요는 없습니다.

But, if you mispronounce a word completely, for example, if you say: Jeopardy.

하지만 예를 들어 다음과 같이 단어를 완전히 잘못 발음한 경우 : Jeopardy.

You will not be able to hear this word when others say it.

다른 사람이 말할 때 이 단어를 들을 수 없습니다.

And others won't be able to understand you when you say it.

그리고 당신이 말할 때 다른 사람들은 당신을 이해하지 못할 것입니다.

So, what is a better way of expanding your active vocabulary?

그렇다면 활성 어휘를 확장하는 더 좋은 방법은 무엇인가요?

Here's the four-step method I would recommend.

다음은 제가 권장하는 4단계 방법입니다.

Step 1. Listen first.

1단계. 먼저 들어보세요.

Choose a topic you're interested in.

관심 있는 주제를 선택합니다.

Find a YouTube clip, or a podcast, or an audio book on that topic.

해당 주제에 관한 YouTube 클립, 팟캐스트 또는 오디오북을 찾습니다.

Listen to it without subtitles once just to get familiar with the context.

문맥에 익숙해지기 위해 한 번만 자막 없이 들어보세요.

Step 2. Listen and read.

2단계. 듣고 읽으십시오.

Listen again, this time with the subtitles on or with the text in front of you.

이번에는 자막을 켜거나 텍스트를 앞에 두고 다시 들어보세요.

When you hear and see a new word you'd like to learn, stop!

배우고 싶은 새로운 단어가 들리거나 보이면 멈추세요!

Write it on a flashcard.

플래시 카드에 기록하십시오.

Step 3. Practice pronunciation.

3단계. 발음을 연습하세요.

When you've collected about five interesting new words, go to an online dictionary.

약 5개의 흥미로운 새 단어를 수집했으면 온라인 사전으로 이동합니다.

Listen and repeat each word several times.

각 단어를 여러 번 듣고 반복하십시오.

Then write its pronunciation also on your flashcard.

You can use the symbols in the dictionary or you can create your own symbols.

And finally, step 4. A very important step.

Choose an example sentence.

예문을 선택하세요. 플래시 카드 뒷면의

Copy one good example sentence from the dictionary on the back of your flashcard.

사전에서 좋은 예시 문장 하나를 복사하세요 .

And make sure that you underline the other important words too.

그리고 다른 중요한 단어에도 밑줄을 긋도록 하세요.

For example, in our sentence:

예를 들어 문장에서:

This will put our economic growth in jeopardy.

이것은 우리의 경제 성장을 위험에 빠뜨릴 것입니다.

The other important words are... 'put' (the verb).

다른 중요한 단어는... 'put'(동사)입니다.

And 'in' (the preposition).

그리고 'in'(전치사).

So, you want to learn: Put in jeopardy as a collocation.

그래서 배우고 싶은 것은 다음과 같습니다. 연어로 위험에 빠뜨리기.

This is a really important step in allowing you  to create correct sentences with this new word.

이것은 이 새로운 단어로 올바른 문장을 만들 수 있게 해주는 정말 중요한 단계입니다.

Of course, with this method, you will learn  fewer new words in the time that you spend studying.

물론 이 방법을 사용하면 공부하는 시간에 더 적은 수의 새로운 단어를 배우게 됩니다.

But, you will be able to use these new words reflexively when you speak.

하지만 말을 할 때 이러한 새로운 단어를 반사적으로 사용할 수 있습니다.

You will change from a passive learner of vocabulary to an active explorer of vocabulary.

당신은 수동적인 어휘 학습자에서 능동적인 어휘 탐색자로 바뀔 것입니다.

And this will make you a much more confident speaker.

이렇게 하면 훨씬 더 자신감 있게 말할 수 있습니다.

To finish, I've got a little homework for you.

Here are three other words that you can go and explore this method with.
