Which tense should we use with expressions like 'today' or 'this morning'?

Should we use the Present Perfect? Should we say: I've done it today?

Or, the Past Simple: I did it today.

Well actually, we can use both. The Past Simple and the Present Perfect.

But it depends on the context.

So, in this lesson we'll look at some very typical scenarios and situations to make it absolutely clear

So, let's now begin our lesson by looking at what the word 'today' actually means.

We can interpret 'today' in four different ways.

We can consider 'today' to mean from midnight to midnight.

That's the clock time a.m and p.m.

We can think of 'today' as from sunrise to sunset.

That's all the time we have daylight.

We can interpret 'today' as being the time I wake up until the time I sleep.

So, that will be your full day.

And we can also interpret 'today' as from the time you start your work or activities

That would be the active part of your day.

So, that's 'today'.

Now, let's look at the two tenses:

Have done and Did.

As you know, have done, which is the Present Perfect tense refers to an action that's completed until now.

Como saben, han hecho, que es el tiempo presente perfecto, se refiere a una acción que se completó hasta ahora.

But, without a specified past time. For example:

Pero, sin un tiempo pasado especificado. Por ejemplo:

I have spoken to my supervisor.

He hablado con mi supervisor.

Whereas, 'did' which, is the Past Simple,

Mientras que 'did', que es el pasado simple,

is also for a completed action but, this time we have a specified past time.

también es para una acción completada, pero esta vez tenemos un tiempo pasado específico.

For example: I spoke to my supervisor yesterday.

Por ejemplo: Ayer hablé con mi supervisor.

So, that brings us to the question:

Is today a past time reference?

Well it depends on two things.

Pues depende de dos cosas.

Firstly, which part of the day you're speaking in.

En primer lugar, en qué parte del día estás hablando.

And secondly, whether you're referring to your full day or just your active day.

Y en segundo lugar, si te refieres a tu día completo o solo a tu día activo.

Okay! We're going to look at three scenarios where today refers to different things.

¡Bueno! Vamos a ver tres escenarios donde hoy se refiere a diferentes cosas.

Let's start with scenario 1.

Let's say it's 4 p.m. You're still at work. You call your partner with good news.

Digamos que son las 4 p. m. Todavía estás en el trabajo. Llamas a tu pareja con buenas noticias.

Will you say to your partner:

I spoke to my supervisor today. I can take next week off.

So, it's 4 p.m. You're still at work.

So your work day is not over yet. You're still in that time frame.

And therefore we should use the Present Perfect tense:

Okay! Let's look at scenario number 2.

Now, it's 6 p.m. And you're back home.

And you share the good news with your partner.

Y compartes las buenas noticias con tu pareja.

Will you say:

Dirá:

I have spoken to my supervisor today. I can take next week off.

Or: I spoke to my supervisor today.

O: hablé con mi supervisor hoy.

Which one would you choose now?

¿Cuál elegirías ahora?

Right, in this case it's 6 p.m. Your work day is over. So, now 'today' becomes a past time reference in your context.

Correcto, en este caso son las 6 p.m. Tu día de trabajo ha terminado. Entonces, ahora 'hoy' se convierte en una referencia de tiempo pasado en su contexto.

Therefore, you should say to your partner:

Por lo tanto, debe decirle a su pareja: hoy

I spoke to my supervisor today.

Right, let's look at scenario number 3.

Now it's 10 p.m. on a Saturday evening. You're ready to go to bed.

You say to your partner:

I don't know why I feel so tired. I not do much today.

no sé por qué me siento tan cansada. No hago mucho hoy.

What do you think you'd say here?

Would you say:

I didn't do much today. Or: I haven't done much today.

No hice mucho hoy. O: No he hecho mucho hoy.

Right, now you're referring to your full day but, because you're just about to go to bed, that full day continues.

Correcto, ahora te refieres a tu día completo, pero como estás a punto de irte a la cama, ese día completo continúa.

You're still in that time frame.

Todavía estás en ese marco de tiempo.

So the correct answer here is:

Así que la respuesta correcta aquí es:

I haven't done much today.

No he hecho mucho hoy.

Alright, let's look at a similar time expression 'this morning'.

Muy bien, veamos una expresión de tiempo similar 'esta mañana'.

Two scenarios here. The first one.

It's 10 a.m. and you're at the office.

You notice your colleague, Mary, isn't there.

You say to another colleague:

I not see Mary this morning. Any idea where she is?

What would you say:

I didn't see Mary this morning. Or: I haven't seen Mary this morning.

The correct answer is:

I haven't seen Mary this morning.

No he visto a Mary esta mañana.

Because it's 10 a.m. Morning is not a past time reference yet.

Porque son las 10 a. m. La mañana aún no es una referencia de tiempo pasado.

Okay! Let's look at scenario number 2.

¡Bueno! Veamos el escenario número 2.

Now, it's 2 p.m. and you see Mary at her desk.

Ahora, son las 2 p. m. y ves a Mary en su escritorio.

What will you say to Mary?

¿Qué le dirás a María?

I haven't seen you this morning. Where were you?  Or: I didn't see you this morning. Where were you?

No te he visto esta mañana. ¿Dónde estabas? O: No te vi esta mañana. ¿Dónde estabas?

So now, it's 2 p.m. So, when we say this morning  we're talking about a past time reference.

Así que ahora, son las 2 p.m. Entonces, cuando decimos esta mañana , estamos hablando de una referencia de tiempo pasado.

This morning is clearly in the past.

Esta mañana está claramente en el pasado.

So the correct tense is:

I didn't see you this morning.

Now, let's look at a slightly different situation using the expression 'this afternoon'

but referring to all of this afternoon.

In which case we usually just say: All afternoon.

En cuyo caso solemos decir: Toda la tarde.

And usually in this case, the tense becomes a continuous tense.

Y, por lo general, en este caso, el tiempo se convierte en un tiempo continuo.

So I'm going to give you again two scenarios. Let's look at scenario 1.

It's 4:45 p.m. and you're still answering emails, which you started at 12:30.

What will you say:

I was answering emails all afternoon. Or: I have been answering emails all afternoon.

Pass Continuous or Present Perfect Continuous.

Pasa continuo o presente perfecto continuo.

Well, you're still at work. Your work day continues. So, all afternoon is not a past time reference yet.

Bueno, todavía estás en el trabajo. Tu día de trabajo continúa. Entonces, toda la tarde aún no es una referencia de tiempo pasado.

You should say:

Deberías decir:

I have been answering emails all afternoon.

He estado respondiendo correos electrónicos toda la tarde.

So, let's look at scenario number 2.

Now, it's 7 p.m. and you're back home. And you think to yourself:

What a boring day!

Qué día tan aburrido!

Would you say:

I was answering emails all afternoon. Or: I have been answering emails all afternoon.

Of course, now your workday is over. You're home. So, speaking about work.

'All afternoon' is a past time reference.

'Toda la tarde' es una referencia de tiempo pasado.

So, you should say:

I was answering emails all afternoon.

Right! Let's look at this evening.

I have two scenarios again.

Let's say you've had dinner at a friend's house and you see it's getting late.

What will you say to this friend with the verb 'have'?

I have a great time this evening. I'd love to stay longer, but it's getting late.

Would you say:

I had. Or: I've had.

The correct answer is:

La respuesta correcta es:

I've had. because this part of the evening that you're spending with your friend is not over yet.

he tenido. porque esta parte de la noche que estás pasando con tu amigo aún no ha terminado.

Now, let's look at our second scenario.

Ahora, veamos nuestro segundo escenario.

You've had dinner at a friend's house, and you've just returned home.

Has cenado en casa de un amigo y acabas de regresar a casa.

You say to your brother:

Le dices a tu hermano:

I a great time at Sally's this evening. I wish I could have stayed longer.

Me lo pasé muy bien en casa de Sally esta noche. Desearía haberme quedado más tiempo.

So, now would you say:

Entonces, ahora dirías:

I have had a great time. Or: I had a great time.

lo he pasado muy bien. O: Me lo pasé muy bien.

And this time the answer is: I had a great time.

Y esta vez la respuesta es: la pasé muy bien.

Because the part of the evening that you spent with your friend is over.

Porque la parte de la noche que pasaste con tu amigo ha terminado.

It's now a time frame in the past.

Ahora es un marco de tiempo en el pasado.

Right! How about expressions like 'this week', or 'this month', or 'this year'?

¡Derecho! ¿Qué tal expresiones como "esta semana", "este mes" o "este año"?

With these expressions, always use the Present Perfect.

Con estas expresiones, usa siempre el presente perfecto.

For example:

Por ejemplo:

I have seen several good films this week, or, this month, or this year.

he visto varias películas buenas esta semana, este mes o este año.

Except if you use the word ....

Excepto si usa la palabra ....

'earlier'.

'antes'.

For example, you can say:

Por ejemplo, puedes decir:

I saw several good films earlier this month.

Vi varias películas buenas a principios de este mes.

Or: Earlier this week, we signed a new contract.

O: A principios de esta semana, firmamos un nuevo contrato.

So, this week, or this month, or this year, they're always Present Perfect.

Entonces, esta semana, este mes o este año, siempre están presentes perfectos.

The frame always continues.

El marco siempre continúa.

If you put 'earlier', you make that a past time frame.

Si escribe 'anterior', lo convierte en un marco de tiempo pasado.

Right! One last thing before we wrap up,

and that is all usage guidelines I give you in my lessons apply to British English.

So, don't be surprised if you  the don't always hear the Present Perfect tense  used in the same way in American English.
