00:01
Welcome to www.engvid.com.
1
1000
1000
00:02
I'm Adam.
2
2000
1120
00:03
In today's video, we're going to look at vocabulary, and it sort of looks like phrasal
3
3120
5760
00:08
verbs, except there's a twist here.
4
8880
2880
00:11
We're not actually looking at phrasal verbs.
5
11760
2760
00:14
We're looking at nouns with prepositions that have a slightly different meaning when they're
6
14520
5520
00:20
put together than the two words.
7
20040
2600
00:22
And if you'll notice, all of these combinations use a body part.
8
22640
4880
00:27
Now, the difference between these and a phrasal verb is that all of these combinations need
9
27520
6160
00:33
a separate verb in order to work.
10
33680
2880
00:36
So, for example, "thumbs down" or "thumbs up", you're going to need the verb because
11
36560
5440
00:42
this by itself is not a verb.
12
42000
2680
00:44
You have the noun, "thumb", you have "up", you have "down", regular preposition.
13
44680
4800
00:49
Remember, phrasal verbs, you have a verb and a preposition creating a different meaning.
14
49480
5280
00:54
Here we have a noun and a preposition, and we need the extra verb.
15
54760
4000
00:58
So, "give a thumbs up" or "give thumbs down".
16
58760
4240
01:03
Basically, when you're giving thumbs up or when you get a thumbs up, so it could be "give"
17
63000
5440
01:08
or "get".
18
68440
3000
01:11
Basically, it's approval.
19
71440
4080
01:15
If you give someone the thumbs up, you're giving them approval, yeah, go ahead.
20
75520
4000
01:19
If you're getting the thumbs up, it means you've received approval or permission from
21
79520
4480
01:24
a higher authority, go ahead.
22
84000
2600
01:26
Thumbs down, obviously decline, reject something, right?
23
86600
4000
01:30
So, if you want to start a new project, you go to your manager or your boss and you say,
24
90600
4960
01:35
"I have a great idea for this project, can I go ahead with it?"
25
95560
4640
01:40
Then you come out and your co-worker says, "Oh, how did it go?"
26
100200
2840
01:43
He goes, "Well, he gave me a thumbs down" or "I got a thumbs down", okay?
27
103040
4240
01:47
And that's what this means, rejection or approval.
28
107280
3960
01:51
Leg up, so basically you have or you get, and you'll notice that a lot of these use
29
111240
7160
01:58
get and have as their verb.
30
118400
2280
02:00
Have a leg up or get a leg up.
31
120680
2560
02:03
When you have a leg up, it means you have an advantage, you have a bit of an edge on
32
123240
5000
02:08
somebody else or something else.
33
128240
2280
02:10
So, if I have a company and I'm selling a certain product, and another company has joined
34
130520
7040
02:17
the market, but I'm already in the process of producing or manufacturing this product,
35
137560
7160
02:24
so I have a leg up in terms of sales because I can start next year, whereas the other company
36
144720
6480
02:31
will need another year and a half to enter the market.
37
151200
3000
02:34
So, by having that leg up, I can get my name recognition going, the brand recognition,
38
154200
6480
02:40
etc.
39
160680
1440
02:42
Hair down, so let, if you let your hair down, it means you're relaxed or you're a little
40
162120
7520
02:49
bit wild.
41
169640
1000
02:50
It means you're not too serious, you allow yourself to have a good time, relax, do whatever
42
170640
6040
02:56
you want.
43
176680
1000
02:57
So, if you go on vacation, usually you're a very serious person, you go to work, you
44
177680
4000
03:01
wear a tie or a shirt or whatever, sorry, and then you're always very, you know, a very
45
181680
5480
03:07
conservative, very responsible person.
46
187160
2520
03:09
But then when you go on vacation, you just let your hair down, and you're drinking, and
47
189680
3360
03:13
you're dancing, and you're meeting all kinds of fun people and having a good time.
48
193040
4200
03:17
That's what hair down means.
49
197240
2320
03:19
Finger on, so to have...
50
199560
5800
03:25
To have your finger on something or to put your finger on something, okay?
51
205360
5560
03:30
So, you have your finger on something means you have your finger on the pulse of the nation
52
210920
5600
03:36
or you have your finger on the situation, it means you understand it.
53
216520
4520
03:41
You understand the situation, you understand the feeling very well.
54
221040
4560
03:45
When you put your finger on it, it means you identify.
55
225600
3360
03:48
It's very similar, you identify something, so I know what this is, but I can't put my
56
228960
6080
03:55
finger on it.
57
235040
1000
03:56
I can't exactly identify what this thing is, okay?
58
236040
3720
03:59
So, put a finger on.
59
239760
2360
04:02
Eyes on, so keep your eyes on, so to keep one's eyes on, basically you just watch.
60
242120
7360
04:09
Watch carefully, make sure nobody steals it.
61
249480
2240
04:11
So, if I'm in the coffee shop and I want to go use the washroom, I say to the person next
62
251720
4640
04:16
to me, "Can you just keep your eyes on my bag while I'm gone?"
63
256360
3320
04:19
And this person will just keep an eye on, watch it, make sure nobody does anything to
64
259680
4360
04:24
it.
65
264040
1000
04:25
If you keep an eye out, so keep eyes on, and notice also I have eyes, and here I have "eye",
66
265040
6680
04:31
so keep your eyes on, watch carefully.
67
271720
3000
04:34
Keep an eye out, and "often" can be used with "for".
68
274720
5560
04:40
Keep an eye out means just look carefully, make sure nothing bad is coming.
69
280280
5480
04:45
Keep an eye out for means pay attention for something specific, okay?
70
285760
6400
04:52
So, if you're doing something bad, let's say when you're a teenager, you're in the back
71
292160
4840
04:57
of the plaza and you're smoking your first cigarette, so you're always, you know, keeping
72
297000
4760
05:01
your eye out, make sure no adult comes or no police come.
73
301760
3440
05:05
And then if you get somebody else does something bad, like somebody does drugs, then they keep
74
305200
4240
05:09
an eye out for police, so something more specific, okay?
75
309440
5280
05:14
Not promoting either of those things, just giving you an example in English.
76
314720
4200
05:18
Head up or chin up, so again, keep, keep your head up.
77
318920
4840
05:23
Now, "chin up" can be a verb or "keep your chin up" as a noun.
78
323760
7120
05:30
Both of them essentially mean the same thing.
79
330880
2280
05:33
Let's say you had a basketball game and you lost, and your coach tells you, you guys played
80
333160
5760
05:38
a great game, you put a good effort, keep your heads up.
81
338920
3840
05:42
Chin up means be proud of yourself, don't feel dejected, don't feel sad, don't feel
82
342760
5720
05:48
upset about whatever happened.
83
348480
2660
05:51
Keep your chin up, be proud, okay?
84
351140
3620
05:54
Now, "heads up", again, notice that I have the head with an "s", heads.
85
354760
6400
06:01
It doesn't mean you have more than one head.
86
361160
2640
06:03
Usually when somebody shouts "heads up", and usually "heads up", right, like they do it
87
363800
5160
06:08
very loud, it means that something is flying in the air, everybody should look up to see
88
368960
5840
06:14
where it is, and just, it's a warning.
89
374800
3400
06:18
Now, realistically, if something is flying in the air, and somebody yells "heads up",
90
378200
5280
06:23
most people automatically go down because they know something is in the air.
91
383480
4400
06:27
If you put heads up, then you might get hit in the head, so it's a little bit risky.
92
387880
5240
06:33
It's just a warning shout, and you're shouting it to many people, that's why many heads,
93
393120
5760
06:38
okay?
94
398880
1000
06:39
"Head around", in this case, again, it could be a verb, "head around the building" means
95
399880
6200
06:46
go around the building, but if you're talking about, as a noun, oh, sorry, I got the wrong
96
406080
6360
06:52
colour here, you try to get your head around something, it means you have a problem or
97
412440
7680
07:00
something that is very difficult to understand, you're trying to get your head around.
98
420120
5920
07:06
Another verb you can use is "wrap", "wrap", so here's a puzzle, somebody did something
99
426040
6680
07:12
that just doesn't make any sense, and you're just, you know, you're just trying to get
100
432720
3960
07:16
your head around it, like, why did this person do that?
101
436680
2440
07:19
It doesn't make sense, so you're trying to understand.
102
439120
2800
07:21
Now, again, "hand out" could be a verb, the teacher hands out some assignment, but if
103
441920
6640
07:28
somebody has their hand out, if someone has their hand out, it means they're asking for
104
448560
7760
07:36
help, or they're asking for money, or they're asking for charity, right?
105
456320
3920
07:40
So that's what "to have one's hand out" means, to ask for something.
106
460240
5800
07:46
"To have a stomach for", to have a stomach for something means to be able to tolerate
107
466040
9480
07:55
it, okay?
108
475520
1400
07:56
If you don't have the stomach for high-risk manoeuvres, and like, let's say you're driving
109
476920
5960
08:02
and you want to make some really fast turns or things like that, some people don't have
110
482880
4880
08:07
the stomach for it, it means they're too afraid, or they can't stand it, or they get sick,
111
487760
4520
08:12
or whatever.
112
492280
1000
08:13
If you do have the stomach for something, it means you're willing to try to do it, okay?
113
493280
6240
08:19
And now, here, two expressions, "back up", to have your back up, or to have your back
114
499520
7640
08:27
up against, like against the wall, for example, okay?
115
507160
3880
08:31
So, again, "back up" could be a verb, to back up, or to back up your computer, but here
116
511040
6440
08:37
we're talking about your actual back, right?
117
517480
2800
08:40
So, if you have your back up, now, think of a cat.
118
520280
3800
08:44
When a cat thinks it's about to be attacked, its back goes up, and it gets into, like,
119
524080
5480
08:49
this little curve, right?
120
529560
1000
08:50
So, it's the same thing.
121
530560
1300
08:51
If you have your back up, it means you're defensive, you're ready to fight, you think
122
531860
4540
08:56
someone is attacking you, so you get very defensive.
123
536400
3340
08:59
If you have your back up against something, it means also you're in a very difficult position,
124
539740
6060
09:05
you don't have options, right, and you think that you, somebody's trying to attack you
125
545800
5000
09:10
as well.
126
550800
1000
09:11
So, if you have your back up against the wall, you don't really have any options, and you're
127
551800
4520
09:16
probably going to attack at some point, because that's your only option.
128
556320
4320
09:20
Now, so all of these are nouns with prepositions.
129
560640
3960
09:24
This one, it's an actual phrasal verb.
130
564600
4060
09:28
This is a verb, so "muscle", you have muscles all over your body.
131
568660
3940
09:32
To "muscle through" means to force your way through something.
132
572600
4400
09:37
So, if a door is locked, you just, you know, use a little bit of muscle power, and you
133
577000
4720
09:41
muscle through the door.
134
581720
1920
09:43
If you...
135
583640
1000
09:44
So, for example, if you're at the office, you want to get something done, you want your
136
584640
4540
09:49
boss to sign something, you just muscle it through to his desk, he signs it, you're off.
137
589180
5580
09:54
Again, I only added it because it's a body part, it's an interesting phrasal verb, I
138
594760
4040
09:58
thought you should know about it.
139
598800
2200
10:01
So, that's it.
140
601000
1540
10:02

607840
5240
10:13
expressions.
