How to Learn Spanish FAST and Start Speaking!

bilingual, trilingual

She speaks Russian, English and Spanish

And today I wanted to ask her tips and tricks

how she learns Spanish

because it took her a little time to learn it

And now she's proficient

And she's going to share her experience with us

You started learning Spanish when you went to University, right?

Yeah

16, 17 something like this

And this was your second foreign language

after English

Tell me when did you feel that

your Spanish is getting better

and you actually can start speaking Spanish

Well, maybe it was after half a year

Firstly because when you're in the university

you start with

you start with

phonetics

some theoretical things

Actual speaking starts a little bit later.

It took me half a year just not to be shy

because when for example you speak one foreign language

at rather good level as English for example

it's impossible for you to understand O my God

I'm starting to learn a new language

and I'm so rabish

I make stupid mistakes

I'll rather keep shut up

It was a little bit difficult

After a half a year it was okay for me

Then I went to Spain

for a language course

Something changes in your mind

when you can go to a country where you can actually speak language

And then there was no problem

You learned Spanish for a year

and then you realised you wouldn't be able to improve it

Well, I had an experience of a language exchange program

with English

Something really changes in your head

when you speak English in native country

I decided maybe it would be the same thing with Spanish

My groupmates and I

decided to go to Spain to improve our Spanish

break this barrier

And it helped actually

You took 3 week course

It was something like a 3 week course

Not much but it really helped

because on the third day you realise that you

you're not translation from Russian into Spanish

But you actually talk

like a normal human being

and when you're surrounded by people who speak Spanish

you just think a little bit in a different way

it really helped

From the 3 day it worked okay

When you came back, what did you do to improve your language?

Was it just university?

University and watching movies in Spanish

watching serials

reading books as well

Great tip was watching euro news

Euro news has a website in all the languages possible

I watched it in Spanish

Then I read just the Spanish transcript

If there were some things I didn't understand

I could put on Russian version

That's it

Many people who think that news produced by their own country

somehow biest

expresses a different point of view

you can just watch in other language

Yeah, cool

Can you recommend any films that you watched?

Some my university works

on movies

I watched lots of

but in Russia we have

google it

I like the movie Azuloscurocasinegro

What else?

You can just google film director, I don't remember him

You'll find lots of movies

he made and we'll post it below

If you have a movie already translated into

your native language

If you watch it in your native language

you can just watch it in Spanish as well

If it was Spanish originally

Some people find it easier to watch like if you're American

and you have an American film translated into Spanish

The translation will be easier

They'll use like American idioms, phrases

translated into Spanish

and try any tv series that you watch now

and watch them in Spanish

because the culture will be familiar, I think

Or you can watch Spanish serials as well

They're not so nice but

What did I watch?

The website is telecinco

It's a Spanish channel

They have lots of serials, you can choose what you want

And antenna free I guess

Something like this

You can google it, download and watch online

And there are torrents

It's not good to say it

We'll cut it out

Okay, you can just download that

Okay, you know how

If somebody wants to go to Spain

or Mexico, that would be a different language?

It would be a different accent I'd say

That's important when you go to the classroom

with teachers and everybody

they speak to you in castellano

That's Spanish that is spoken in Madrid

just the central part

the right one

In Mexico, no

If you're talking about Spain, yeah

In Spain teachers have a standardized version of Spanish

In Mexico or Latin America

that would be different

They have their own not only accent

but the version of language

When I worked with Spanish language

I was translating I don't remember the country

it was some serial from Latin America

And were moments like "what the hell is that?"

I contacted my friend from Spain

like I have a problem with my work and need help

what does it mean?

He said: "I have no idea".

Just google it please

Maybe there is some different between

Spanish in Spain and Spanish in Latin America

That's not great. If you want to improve your language

just some skills and some vocabulary

any destination you like

If you're in Europe

of course it'll be easier for you to go to Spain

In you're in other parts of the world

Maybe Latin America

That's really no difference

If you're in the States, go to Miami

or to San Francisco

everything in two languages

Exactly, in the Bay area

When Daria came to California

she said all of the names are in Spanish

Los Altos

Yeah

It was a part that spoke Spanish

What really suprised me

you see some, I don't know, even in shops

some writing in Spanish

In Spanish districts

Go on and practice, you don't even have to travel

If you want to learn proper Spanish

that has to be a proper language school

somewhere like in Mexico

or in Spain and then

you go out and experience real language

Yeah, that's even better

because in the crowded classroom you have classes

standard language is very standard

When you go out on the street

you brain starts working in different manner

and that's a good practice

When you understand 30% of all the information

but you hear really language

it's really good for you

And choosing the destination,

the best in not the popular one

like Barcelona

In Barcelona everything is for tourists

If you know English, nobody will speak Spanish to you

Everybody wants to practice English

Go to some not very remote places but

just not so popular

in your country

The best way to practice Spanish is to do it without

people who speak your language

When you meet people who speak your language

It's impossible not to talk to them

Choose not very popular destination

and that would be okay

Did you stay with a host family?

No, I stayed in a flat share

and in a residence

Did you have a chance to speak Spanish?

Yeah, we had our neighbors

In Spain everyone is friendly

if you're going to some school in Spain

you have lots of parties

some class activities

and everything will be with your professor and activity leaders

You'll make lots of new friends

friends of your professor

and everyone

My last question - how did you beat the fear of speaking

a foreign language

to a native speaker?

My English is I hope quite okay

But I practiced my Spanish not so much

as I want to

And unfortunately I really have this fear

The only way to beat it

is just go and speak

Go to Spain and tell some native speaker

like you know I studies Spanish and I can speak a little bit

In this very moment he'll start speaking Spanish with you

And you have practice

The only way - just start speaking

Just go there and speak Spanish

And it's the best way to learn it

beat the stress
