How This Football Manager Learns English (3 Ways)

and in this English lesson we're going to look at

how Unai Emery learns English.

(upbeat music)

If you don't know who Unai Emery is,

he is a football manager from Spain who

currently manages Arsenal, in the English Premier League.

And the English Premier League

has a lot of foreign players and managers.

Some come over and learn great English,

so they speak really well,

they understand everything

and they do this very quickly.

Others, never get there.

So there are certain players who have been playing

in the English Premier League for years,

but they still have an A1 or an A2 level of English.

Recently, Unai Emery, who joined Arsenal in the summer,

talked about how he is learning English,

and we're going to look at the three things

that he is doing to help him improve his English.

But first we're going to look at some quotes

he made in a recent press conference

where he talked about his passion for football,

and I'm just going to correct some of the things he said.

Talking about his passion for football, he said

"It's my work, but I don't think every day

that it is my work, it's my best hobby.

I feel very big the passion.

I am doing my work with my desire.

I can stay with my family, my son, and my friends."

Now there are quite a lot of mistakes here,

or some of this doesn't sound very natural,

but you can understand the general meaning.

He loves what he's doing, it's his favorite hobby,

he is very passionate about football,

and he's also spending time with his family and friends.

So let's just make a couple of changes.

Firstly, "I feel very big the passion."

It's better to say "I'm very passionate about football."

So I'm very passionate about football.

I'm passionate about politics.

I'm passionate about whatever subject

you are passionate about.

And the last one,

"I can stay with my family, my son, and my friends."

It's better to say

"I can spend time with my family and my friends."

So, to spend time with people.

So what he's saying is even though he's very busy

in what he's doing, he can still have time

for his family and friends.

Let's now talk about the three ways he is learning English,

and the third way is a great way to learn

and we're gonna obviously take about that later.

But first, he talked about

how he has taken intensive courses.

So I can't find anymore information about this,

but he has said somewhere that he takes intensive courses

in order to learn English.

And I've talked about taking intensive courses

and studying at an English-speaking country before,

so be sure to watch that video.

I'll leave a link in the description.

Secondly, and I think this is really important,

is he's always speaking in English.

Now, like I said before, some players and managers

come over and they use a translator in press conferences,

or they speak in their native language while they're around

other players from the same country.

But Unai Emery, from day one,

has only spoken English at press conferences.

And like you saw before, the English he's using

isn't perfect, it doesn't sound completely natural,

but you can tell by watching his press conferences,

and I'll leave a link below,

that he enjoys speaking in English,

that he finds it fun.

And also, that he's not worried about making mistakes.

So, that's a great lesson to learn here,

is that you need to practice in order to learn

and to overcome your fear of making mistakes.

The third way he's learning

is by watching certain TV series.

Here's what he said:

"Now I am watching English series to improve my English.

Peaky Blinders. It is good

but it is difficult to understand, from Birmingham,

and it's very aggressive. But it's good, it's good."

I'm going to put a poll up here asking a simple question,

"Have you watched Peaky Blinders before?"

Now if you don't know what Peaky Blinders is,

it's a TV series set just after World War 1,

in Birmingham, and it's this gangster family TV series,

which my wife and I started watching

but we only got up to episode three.

Because it's set in Birmingham,

most characters have a brummie accent, a brummie accent.

Now I'm not gonna try using a brummie accent here,

but there's an old joke that says,

"If you say kipper tie out loud, it sounds

like you're saying cup of tea in a brummie accent."

So just try it:

Kipper tie, kipper tie.

Going back to Unai Emery,

it looks like he's taking his obsession for football

into learning English too.

So he is doing all the right things,

he's taking courses, hopefully the right ones

that will help him improve.

He is surrounding himself in English

which obviously is easy to do if you are

in an English-speaking country,

but again, not everyone does this.

Some people want to isolate themselves with people

who speak their native language when they move abroad.

But he's different. He seems like he's surrounding

himself with the right people and is also

making an effort to speak English

even in these stressful situations like press conferences.

And finally, he is watching TV.

And like I've said many times before,

watching TV is a great way to learn English.
