Advanced English Test! Can YOU Answer These 10 Questions (Do vs Make)

- Hello, this is Jack from ToFluency.com.

Now, in this video, we're going to do something

a little bit different.

I am going to give you a test.

(upbeat music)

(logo whooshing)

The test is going to be on the difference between

do and make, and I'm making this video

for two main reasons.

The first one is, I know how much people love

to test their English, in fact, my most watched video

on this channel is how you can test

your own level of English, how you can evaluate

your own level of English.

And secondly, it's because I want to focus on something

that I think is important, and it's this,

collocations, a collocation is just two or more words

that go together in a natural way.

So, when people use collocations, they're using

natural English and when it comes to knowing the difference

between do and make, the vast majority of this

is learning these collocations,

just knowing which one to use, which one, do or make,

is more natural for that situation.

So, here is how it's going to work.

I'm going to give you a sentence

and you're going to see this on your screen,

but there'll be one word missing

and that word is either do or make,

but it's not just that easy.

You also have to use the correct form.

So it might be to do, I do, he does, I've been doing,

I am doing, I have done, you get the picture.

After each question, I'm going to give you the answer

and I'll give you some more examples, too.

And speaking of examples, as always,

check the description because I'm going to leave a list

of the examples that I use in this video

so that you can practice over the long term.

Okay, are you ready for number one,

because here it is.

(air whooshes)

Don't something a fool of yourself.

Don't make a fool of yourself.

Now, to make a fool of yourself means to do something

that is stupid or something that is embarrassing.

For example, if your friend goes to a party,

maybe he has a little bit too much to drink,

and he starts saying things, he's loud,

he's like knocking things over

and everyone feels a little bit tense

and a little bit unsure of what to say,

then this person is making a fool of himself.

(air whooshes)

Okay, here is number two.

I hate something the bed.

I hate making the bed.

This one might have been easy for you,

but to make the bed means to arrange the sheets

and the duvet and the pillows so that it looks really nice.

Now, I don't necessarily hate making the bed,

I just don't think I'm very good at it.

I'm not very good at making the bed look good

after I have slept in it.

Now, a quick question for you.

Number three, have you any research on that?

Have you done any research on that?

Now, to do research means to investigate something,

to get information about something.

For example, I did a lot of research

before I bought this camera.

I did a lot of research before I bought this camera.

I went on forums, I looked at YouTube videos,

and I just read as much as I could about this camera

and the other ones that I was considering.

Sometimes before you buy something

you can do too much research and it feels like

you just waste time, like you're in this black hole

of time, just looking at review after review after review.

But if you are someone like this, then here's a quick tip.

Do it in English.

It's a fantastic way to get more input,

to read more, to watch videos about topics

that you're interested in,

because if you're doing a lot of research,

for example, about buying a camera,

then it's something that you are interested in

and you can learn all the words and phrases

and get all of this input by doing your research in English.

We can also use the word research as a verb, too.

For example, I need to research that.

(air whooshes)

Number four, come on, your mind up!

Come on, make your mind up!

This one is very common and it just means

to finally make a decision.

I wish he would hurry up and make his mind up.

We could also change the order of the sentence.

For example, don't try and persuade me,

I've already made up my mind.

Which means that the decision is set.

But if the decision isn't set, you can say,

hm, I'm gonna change my mind.

Or I've changed my mind.

I think Manchester United are going to win.

Number five, I haven't any exercise for a few days.

I haven't done any exercise for a few days.

Well, here's a sentence from my life.

Before this morning, I hadn't done

any exercise for a few days.

So, before this morning, when I went to the gym,

I hadn't done any exercise for a few days,

which is a great example of the past perfect.

Now, you can say, do you exercise

or again, you can just use the verb exercise.

I haven't exercised for a few days.

Or you'll also hear the phrase or verb to work out.

I haven't worked out for a few days.

Number six, that sense.

That makes sense.

This can be used in various ways,

but they all have similar meanings.

For example, if you are explaining something to me

and I say, that makes sense,

with that type of intonation, that makes sense,

then I'm saying that what you are saying

is reasonable or logical.

In the negative form, that doesn't make any sense.

What I'm saying here is what you're saying

isn't logical or reasonable.

You can also say, you're not making any sense.

You're not making any sense.

And in a lot of my videos and when I give classes,

I often say, does that make sense.

Does that make sense?

And what I'm asking here is

do you understand what I'm saying.

Are you following what I'm saying.

Let's a list.

Let's make a list.

Personally, I love making lists.

So, I make to do lists before we go on vacation.

I make lists of all the things

that we need to take on vacation.

I make lists for all the videos

I want to make for this YouTube channel.

And I do this inside Apple Notes.

Many language learners like to make lists

of the new words and phrases that they learn,

which is a great idea.

But if you want to remember the words and phrases

over the long term, then I recommend making flashcards.

Number eight, I need the washing.

I need to do the washing.

I'm the one in the house who does all the washing.

I don't really enjoy it, but I'm the one who does it.

Now in America, you'll hear people say

do the laundry, and it basically means the same thing,

to do the washing and to do the laundry.

And we use the verb do for both of these terms.

We use do for a lot of the household tasks,

like to do the washing, do the laundry,

do the dishes, do the cleaning up.

Number nine, have you your hair yet?

Have you done your hair yet?

Come on, we're late.

Have you done your hair yet?

No one's there, let's talk about my hair.

It doesn't make me long to do my hair

because, well, at the moment it's very short.

After a shower, I'm quickly drying it,

put in a little bit of product,

and then take about 10 seconds to style it.

In addition to doing your hair,

people can also do their makeup and do their nails.

Number 10, we're at the end, the last one.

Are you any progress with that report?

Are you making any progress with that report?

To make progress means to move towards a goal

or to get closer to completing a certain task.

I use this phrase all the time

when talking about learning English.

So I'll say things like, to make faster progress

with your English, then you need to use flashcards,

you need to listen more, you need to watch

more of my lessons, and here's a question for you.

that it's important to learn these differences.
