In the real world, you can walk into a gallery,

buy a one-of-a-kind artwork that is signed and authenticated as original,

take it home, put it on the wall, enjoy it,

show it to your friends;

it might even be an investment.

The artwork becomes part of your story and adds meaning to your life.

It marks a time and a feeling for you.

Now, we can have the exact same experience

While this might seem like an obscure niche on the internet,

let's take a look at a recent auction sale that you might have heard of.

아마 들어보셨을 최근 경매 사례를 보시죠.

In March of 2021,

the major auction house Christie's

sold a purely digital artwork by an artist named Beeple

비플이라는 예술가가 디지털로만 작업한 예술품이

for 69 million dollars in cryptocurrency.

The auction, the artwork and the currency was virtual,

but the transaction was very real.

But who can afford a Beeple?

Don't worry,

The revolutionary instrument

that allowed for a digital file to be sold as a unique artwork

is the same tool that will allow our students to make livings

as freelance creators.

There is a paradigm shift happening

예술계의 관점이 바뀌면서

that is turning the world of content creation

창작의 세계가 바뀌고 창작의 경제적 대가가 앞섭니다.

and its financial rewards on its head.

Gone are the days of the internet being a giant copying machine,

인터넷이 거대한 복사기였던 시대,

of intermediaries taking a larger cut than the creators,

중간 매개가 창작가보다 더 많은 몫을 챙기던 시대,

and of artists not receiving royalties.

예술가가 사용료를 받지 못하던 시대는 지났습니다.

This new automated tool

that allows for guaranteed proof of origination and ownership

of music, videos, images and even text

독창성과 소유권을 보장하며

is called an NFT:

NFT, 즉, 대체 불가 토큰이라고 부릅니다.

non-fungible token.

The NFT is allowing everyone to own their own data,

NFT로 예술부터 시작해서 모두가 자신의 데이타를 소유할 수 있습니다.

starting with art,

and there is a hope that it will revolutionize

how value is created online

and how digital labor is monetized.

So the eternal question:

근본적인 질문으로 NFT란 무엇일까요?

What is an NFT?

Simply put,

쉽게 비유하자면 영구적인 추적 장치로서

it is a permanent tracking device

that proves ownership of a digital file,

디지털 파일의 소유권을 증명하는 것이죠.

somewhat similar to the way that you can chip a pet

반려 동물에게 칩을 심어서

to identify it as yours if it runs away,

잃어버렸을 때 누가 주인인지 알 수 있게 하는 것과 비슷합니다.

an NFT is a cryptographic token connected to a digital asset

NFT는 디지털 자산에 연결된 암호 토큰으로

to preserve ownership rights in the metaverse.

메타버스에서 소유권을 지킵니다.

Non-fungible means "not exchangeable."

‘대체 불가’란 교환할 수 없다는 뜻입니다.

Most things in the real world are non-fungible,

현실에서는 대개 대체 불가능하죠.

because most physical objects are unique

물리적 사물은 대부분 독특하고

and can't be traded one for one.

일대일로 대응되는 것이 없으니까요.

There is no painting, pet or person that is exactly equivalent to another.

똑같은 그림이나 반려 동물, 사람은 없습니다.

Money, on the other hand,

그런데 돈은 몇 안 되는 대체 가능한 것입니다.

is one of the few items that is fungible,

meaning one dollar is equivalent to another dollar

즉, 1달러는 다른 1달러와 같은 가치를 지니며

and one Bitcoin is equivalent to another Bitcoin.

비트코인도 마찬가지입니다.

The underlying decentralized technology

비트코인 같은 가상 화폐를 가능하게 하는 탈중앙화 기술은

that enabled digital currencies such as Bitcoin

is blockchain.

블록체인입니다.

Blockchain prevents digital money from being duplicated or hacked,

블록체인은 가상 화폐를 복제하거나 해킹할 수 없도록 하고

and it removes the need for a centralized authority,

중앙 기관의 필요성을 제거합니다.

such as a bank,

은행처럼 거래를 검증하는 기관이 필요없는 거죠.

to validate transactions.

And like Bitcoin, the record of ownership of an NFT

is kept in a public database on the internet

that is maintained by millions of computers

that keep track, via consensus,

of all content origination and transactions.

At the Blockchain Lab at Georgia State University,

we study how to monetize creative labor

using blockchains and other decentralized ledger technologies.

and to create an equitable foundation for its next phase: the metaverse.

This decentralized business model gives financial power back to the creators

Amy Rader is a fine artist in Atlanta who shows in traditional galleries.

so that she could expand to an online audience

and to add a new revenue stream to increase her income.

In the metaverse, humans are represented as avatars.

메타버스에서는 개인은 아바타로 나타납니다.

An eight-year-old probably knows,

but did you know that you can buy clothes for your avatar?

아바타의 옷도 살 수 있다는 거 아셨나요?

This is Kadine James.

She is leading the way in digital fashion

that can only be worn in the virtual world.

가상 세계에서만 입을 수 있는 패션이죠.

Today, Gucci sells sneakers that only exist in the virtual world,

현재 구찌는 가상 세계에만 존재하는 운동화를 팝니다.

and you can never wear them,

현실에서는 신을 수 없고 가상 세계의 아바타만 신을 수 있죠.

but your avatar can.

Alternatively,

you can use augmented reality

to overlay virtual sneakers onto your in-real-life feet.

가상의 운동화를 현실의 발에 겹쳐볼 수 있습니다.

And because of NFTs,

anyone, not just well-known companies like Gucci,

can create digital fashion to be bought, sold and worn in games,

Take the pioneer 18-year-old FEWOCiOUS,

The use of augmented and virtual-reality fashion

is becoming mainstream,

but because NFTs as art and collectibles are so new,

the predictions are too volatile for anyone to make.

But it is a sign that heavy hitters like Mark Cuban and Snoop Dogg

This is the new frontier for artists and their fans.

make limited editions to control for scarcity,

But with NFTs,

you can also sell directly to your buyer without an intermediary,

expand your audience to the entire internet,

OK, so how does this work,

and how do you get involved as an artist?

Your artwork is a digital file.

여러분의 작품은 디지털 파일입니다.

To protect this file

파일을 보호하고 디지털 작업의 가치를 영원히 보존하려면

and capture the value of your labor in perpetuity,

you go to a digital goods marketplace and "mint" it,

디지털 시장에 ‘민팅’해야 합니다.

meaning you register your work as a token, for a fee, on the blockchain.

블록체인에 토큰을 등록하는 일입니다.

It will contain a signature, time stamp,

and any rules around its resale.

Once you’ve minted your work and you want to sell it,

you connect with your community

사람들에게 여러분의 NFT를 ‘드랍’했다고 알리면 됩니다.

and let them know that your NFT has "dropped,"

meaning it is for sale.

판매 중이라는 뜻이죠.

It is important to note

명심해야 할 점은

that all the same rules that make for good art and business

훌륭한 예술품이나 사업에 필요한 모든 규칙이

가상 세계에도 똑같이 적용된다는 것입니다.

apply in the virtual world:

a strong connection to your followers,

사람들과 친밀하게 교류하고

an authentic or compelling story

진실되거나 흥미로운 이야기가 있고

and consistent output and work ethic.

꾸준한 활동과 직업 윤리가 필요합니다.

So who will buy your art,

그럼 누가 여러분의 작품을 살까요?

or how do you get involved as a collector?

혹은 그런 예술품을 구매하려면 어떻게 해야 할까요?

Buyers go to the same marketplaces that artists use.

구매자는 판매자가 있는 디지털 시장에 갑니다.

There, you look for art that you appreciate

거기서 마음에 드는 작품을 찾고

and artists you want a direct connection with.

직접 연결하고 싶은 예술가를 찾습니다.

Some people invest because the artwork resonates with them,

투자자들은 작품이 마음에 들어서 투자할 수도 있고

or they recognize great talent,

or they see a potential for that artist to play a significant part in history.

Once purchased directly from the artist,

The metaverse is a place where we will spend

Who builds it, who owns it and how it is built

누가 만드는지, 누가 소유하는지, 어떻게 만드는지에 따라

will determine what this world becomes.

But just like the real world,

the metaverse is very complex,

and there are many problems yet to be solved.

And that is where you come in.

a digital citizen

whose responsibility it is to be a good steward to the metaverse,

making sure that it is diverse, equitable, accessible and sustainable.

지속 가능한 공간으로 만들 책임이 있습니다.

This is just the beginning of the decentralized movement.

NFTs will revolutionize most online industries,

but it is starting with the creative economy.
