So let's start with what prompted you

자 그럼, 제일 먼저...

어떤 계기로 기후운동가가 되었는지 한번 얘기해볼까요?

or what brought you to become a climate activist,

to become aware of the climate issue from the beginning?

기후 문제에 관심을 갖게 된 계기가 무엇인가요?

You must have been very young, but you're still very young.

아마 아주 어렸을 것 같아요, 지금도 충분히 젊지만요.

Vanessa Nakate: My journey started in 2018.

바네사 나카테: 그 시작은 2018년이었어요.

That is when I started reading about the challenges

여러 기사를 통해서

저희 우간다 사람들이 겪고 있는 어려움에 대해 알게 되면서부터였죠.

that the people in my country, Uganda, were facing.

And at that point,

그중 하나가 기후변화라는 걸 그때 알게 되었어요.

I found out that climate change was one of those challenges.

And I remember in school

그리고 학교 지리 수업시간에 배웠던 기후변화에 대한 내용이 떠올랐죠.

studying about climate change in geography class.

It never made me realize that it was actually an emergency

수업 때는 기후변화가 정말 시급한 문제라는 걸 전혀 몰랐어요.

or something that was happening at that time.

당장 일어나고 있는 일이라는 것도 몰랐죠.

So I was really surprised to find that it is the greatest threat

그래서 정말 많이 놀랐습니다.

기후변화가 정말 큰 위협이고 사람들의 생존이 달렸다는 사실에요.

facing the lives of so many people.

MR: And what was it in 2018 that kind of prompted you?

메리: 2018년도의 어떤 일이 그런 생각을 하게 만들었나요?

VN: I remember speaking to one of my uncles, Charles,

바네사: 제 삼촌 찰스와 이야기를 나눈 적이 있습니다.

and asking him if he has seen any changes

삼촌의 어렸을 때와 지금이 얼마나 달라졌냐고 물어봤죠.

from when he was much younger and right now.

And he explained to me that 20 years ago in a specific place,

삼촌의 말에 따르면 20년 전에는

예를 들어, 미탄야라는 지역에서는

he mentioned in Mitanya

that they would expect rains at a specific time.

비가 내리는 정확한 시기를 미리 알 수 있었다고 해요.

But then he said now, 20 years later,

하지만 20년이 지난 지금은

that the farmers cannot tell when the rains would come.

농부들이 언제 비가 올지 알 수 없게 되었다고 하셨어요.

So he actually said there's been a change, but no one is talking about it.

실제로 기후 변화가 있지만 아무도 관심을 두지 않는다고 하셨죠.

So that really triggered me to start doing something about it.

그 말에 저는 뭔가 해야겠다고 결심하게 되었습니다.

I didn't know what exactly I had to do,

뭘 해야 할지 정확히 몰랐지만요.

하지만 스웨덴의 그레타 툰베리가 했던 시위를 보고 큰 영감을 얻었습니다.

but after seeing Greta Thunberg from Sweden strike, I was really inspired.

MR: You saw those photographs of her in front of the Swedish parliament.

메리: 스웨덴 의회 앞에서의 1인 시위 사진을 보았군요.

바네사: 네. 2018년 말이었죠.

VN: Yes. In 2018, towards the end of the year.

So I was really inspired by her actions,

그녀의 행동에 큰 영감을 얻었고,

and I decided that I would start striking as well.

저 역시도 시위를 해야겠다고 생각했어요.

However, I was quite scared to go to the street.

하지만 막상 거리로 나서기가 두려웠어요.

MR: Why were you scared?

메리: 어떤 것이 두려웠나요?

VN: I think I've always been nervous to face people, so many people.

바네사: 저는 사람들 앞에 나설 때 늘 긴장을 했던 것 같아요.

MR: Are you a bit shy?

메리: 조금 내성적인가요?

VN: A bit, yes.

바네사: 네, 조금 그래요.

Yeah, but I tend to manage it, I should say.

하지만 이제 좀 익숙해진 거 같아요.

MR: You were in Davos with Greta Thunberg

메리: 바네사씨는 다보스에서 그레타 툰베리와 함께 했었죠.

and some other well-known climate activists.

다른 유명한 기후운동가들과 함께요.

And there was a photo taken, I think, of five of you,

그때 찍은 사진도 있었죠. 아마 다섯 명이었던 것 같은데,

and the other four were white women, white young women,

다른 네 명은 백인이었잖아요.

다들 어린 나이의 젊은 백인 여성들이었죠.

you were all very young.

And you were cut out of the photograph.

그런데 바네사씨는 사진에서 잘렸어요.

VN: Yes.

바네사: 네. 맞아요.

MR: You could have just, you know, accepted that, but you didn’t.

메리: 그냥 넘어갈 수도 있겠지만 바네사씨는 그러지 않았어요.

Tell us about why, how you felt

그때 기분이 어땠는지 말해주세요.

and then why you decided to react the way you did

그리고 왜 그런 반응을 보였는지, 또 어떻게 했는지도요.

and what you did.

VN: When I first saw the photograph, I was, of course, really frustrated

바네사: 처음 그 사진을 봤을 땐 당연히 정말 화가 났어요.

because I remember one of the messages

왜냐면 제가 기자회견에서 정말로 강조했던 이야기 중 하나는

I really emphasized at that press conference

was the need to listen to the voices,

전 세계의 다양한 운동가들의 이야기에 귀를 기울여야 한다는 것이었거든요.

you know, of different activists across the world.

MR: And suddenly, you were cut out.

메리: 그런데 사진에서 잘라냈군요. 바네사: 네, 바로 그거예요.

VN: Exactly.

정말 실망스러웠고, 화도 났어요.

So it was quite disappointing to see and also frustrating for me.

But also at that point,

그런데 한편으론, 왜 저를 사진에서 잘라냈는지 물어보고 싶었어요.

I just wanted to ask why I have been removed from the picture.

And that's exactly what I did.

그래서 그렇게 행동했던 거예요.

I asked why.

왜냐고 물어봤죠.

And that really gave me the opportunity to talk about, you know,

그 덕분에 이야기할 수 있는 기회가 생겼어요.

예를 들면, 기후변화와 인종차별간의 교차점 같은 것에 대해서요.

some of the intersections of climate change, for example,

with racial justice.

MR: Talk about this big long word that we use, intersectionality.

메리: 이걸 우리는 ‘교차성’라고 말하죠.

(Laughter)

VN: Yeah, so when when we talk about intersectionality,

바네사: 네, 맞아요. 교차성이 무슨 의미냐면

it's just something that explains

기후변화는 그 자체만의 문제가 아니라는 것입니다.

that climate change is not just on its own.

Climate change is more than weather,

기후변화는 단지 날씨와 통계를 뛰어넘어 사람에 대한 문제라는 거죠.

it's more than statistics,

it's about the people.

And when we bring in the conversation of intersectionality,

그래서 교차성에 대해 이야기할 때는,

it makes us talk about, you know, things like poverty eradication.

빈곤 퇴치와 같은 것을 이야기할 수밖에 없고

It makes us talk about racial justice in our fight for climate justice.

기후변화를 위한 투쟁안에서의 인종적 형평성에 대해 이야기하게 되죠.

MR: Yes.

메리: 네, 맞아요.

And you know, you’ve been the face on Time magazine.

바네사씨는 타임지에 실린 적도 있죠.

You have reached very high visibility as a voice for Africa.

아프리카의 대변인으로서 꽤 많이 조명되고 있는 편인데요.

How has that been?

그건 어떤가요? 그 과정은 어땠나요?

How has the journey for you been?

How have you felt internally?

내면적으로 어떤 것을 느꼈나요?

How have you managed to cope with, you know, being well-known,

잘 알려지는 것에 대해 어떻게 스스로를 관리하고 있는지,

presumably you get lots of social media messages, lots of everything,

아마 소셜미디어나 다른 것을 통해 많은 연락을 받을 테고

and maybe some of them are negative.

부정적 시각도 있을 텐데요.

How do you cope?

어떻게 대처하고 있나요?

VN: Well, I want to first of all say that, you know,

바네사: 음, 먼저 말씀드리고 싶은 것은

I'm not the voice of Africa,

저는 아프리카의 대변인이 아닙니다.

yeah, there are so many --

목소리를 내는 많은 사람들이...

MR: You are one of the voices.

메리: 그중 하나죠.

VN: Yes.

바네사: 네.

And the publicity or the fame, if I should say that,

말하자면, 언론의 관심이나 명성 같은 것들은

comes with that.

따라오는 것일 뿐이에요.

It can be both positive and also negative.

거기엔 긍정적인 면도 있고 부정적인 면도 있죠.

And negative, it can be, you know,

부정적인 것들은, 아시겠지만,

the people who will say that what you're doing is not real

제가 하고 있는 것들이 비현실적이라고 말하거나

or you're exaggerating the climate crisis

제가 기후위기를 과장하고 있다든지

or people who tell you you're, you know,

또 어떤 사람들은

젊은 여성은 나서지 말고 결혼이나 하라고 하기도 하죠.

a young woman, you should get married instead of standing on the street.

So it comes with all that.

그런 반응들이 뒤따랐지만

But one thing I realized that, you know,

그러면서도 제가 깨달은 한 가지는

부정적인 것은 단지 1% 일뿐이고

the one percent is the negativity,

but the 99 percent,

나머지 99%는

it's the support from different parts of the world.

세계 곳곳에서 보내주시는 지지와 응원이라는 것이에요.

So amidst all that, I look at the support from the different people.

그 가운데서 저는 다양한 분들의 응원을 바라보게 돼요.

MR: And you take steps to make sure

메리: 그러면 바네사씨 스스로

that your own self-care is, you know, going well,

하고 있는 일에 대해서 중심을 잘 잡으면서

that you've got a balance in what you're doing.

스스로 잘 돌보고 있다는 말씀이시군요.

VN: Yes.

바네사: 네.

MR: What do you do?

메리: 어떤 것들이 있나요?

VN: Apart from the activism,

바네사: 기후운동에서 멀어져서

I do many other things in my own personal life.

제 개인적인 삶에서도 많은 것을 하려고해요.

One, like you've talked about, self-care, I really love to rest.

말씀하신 것처럼 스스로를 잘 돌보는 것, 휴식시간을 갖는 것을 정말 좋아해요.

And many times for me, rest is actual sleep.

저에게 휴식시간이라는 것은 대부분 잠을 자는 시간이에요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Yes, so I really love to get good sleep.

네, 저는 푹 자는 걸 정말 좋아해요.

And literally everyone here at home knows that.

저희 가족들 모두 그걸 잘 알고 있죠.

And also, I love getting involved in church activities.

또 교회 활동을 하는 것을 좋아해요.

Yes.

네.

메리: 제가 알기로 바네사씨는

MR: I know you've talked about

capitalism as being part of a problem in degrading land

자본주의가 토지 황폐화의 원인 중 하나라고 하셨는데요.

and extracting and degrading, etc.

자원 고갈과 황폐화 문제에 있어서요.

What kind of structures would you like to see in a broad sense?

넓은 시각에서 앞으로 어떤 구조를 기대하고 계신가요?

What kind of world would you like to see?

어떤 세상을 보고 싶으신가요?

VN: Yes, I would like to see a kind of world that respects people,

바네사: 네, 제가 원하는 세상은

사람들이 존중받는 동시에 지구가 존중받는 세상이에요.

but also respects the planet as well.

And it's important to note

중요한 사실은

that we are in a system that has created the climate crisis

우리가 속해 있는 이 시스템이 기후위기를 만들어냈고,

and many other challenges that people are facing.

우리가 마주하고 있는 많은 문제들을 일으켰다는 것입니다.

And when we demand for system change,

이 시스템을 바꾸기를 요구한다면,

we mean that the system actually has to change.

실제로 이 시스템이 바뀌어야 한다고 생각해요.

We cannot solve, you know,

우리가 가진 지금의 문제들은

the problems that are happening right now

그 문제들을 일으킨 시스템 안에서는 해결 할 수 없기 때문이에요.

with the very system that created them.

So we need something new,

뭔가 새로운 것,

something that will ensure that people are protected

사람들을 보호하면서 지구도 보호할 수 있는

and the planet is protected as well.

그런 새로운 것이 필요해요.

When it comes to consumption,

소비 문제에 있어서도 정부의 역할이 필요합니다.

I think it's a place of governments

helping to make cities more sustainable for people.

정부가 나서서 더욱 지속가능한 도시들을 만들어야 한다고 생각해요.

Because it could be transportation.

교통수단 같은 것 말이죠.

For example, when you're in a country within Europe,

예를 들어, 유럽의 어느 나라를 가보면

you can very easily use the train to get to so many places

기차로 여러 곳을 쉽게 방문할 수 있어요.

to even go through, I mean, get to another country,

심지어 다른 나라로 이동할 수도 있죠.

which may be difficult in some places or in some countries.

반면 어떤 나라나 장소에서는 이것이 아주 어려운 일일 수 도 있어요.

So I think it's really a place of making our cities

그래서 도시나 국가가 먼저 지속가능한 환경을 만든다면

and our countries more sustainable

so that people can live more sustainably

사람들도 지속가능한 삶을 살게 될 거예요.

when it comes to, you know, food, when it comes to transportation,

음식, 교통. 모든 것이 될 수 있어요.

when it comes to clothing itself.

옷도 될 수 있죠.

You know, the issue of population,

인구 문제같은 것은

it is not the problem in our fight for the climate crisis.

기후 위기에 대한 싸움에 비하면 문젯거리도 아니에요.

MR: I agree.

메리: 저도 동의해요.

VN: Because it's important to know that, you know,

바네사: 왜냐하면, 아주 중요한 사실이 있는데요.

아프리카에는 엄청난 인구가 있지만,

while Africa has a huge population,

it is responsible for less than four percent of the global emissions.

세계 탄소 배출량의 단 4%에도 미치지 못합니다.

And a family of maybe ten in Uganda

우간다의 10인 가구가

will emit way less than a family of four

유럽의 4인 가구에 비해 훨씬 더 적은 양의 탄소를 배출하죠.

in a country within Europe.

So it's really a place of understanding who has caused this crisis

누가 위기를 만들어 내는지를 이해하는 것이 중요해요.

and what needs to be done to make people live more sustainably.

또 더 지속가능한 삶을 살기 위해 무엇이 필요한지 아는 것이 중요해요.

MR: And you've turned the focus, which I want to do,

메리: 그래서 바네사씨는 스스로 하고 싶은 것을 하기로 했군요

on your continent, Africa.

자신이 사는 대륙, 아프리카에서요.

There are so many crises at the moment.

지금 많은 위기들이 있어요.

There is, you know, a food crisis, a fuel crisis,

식량위기, 연료위기, 그리고 코로나도 있었고요.

there was the COVID crisis

and a lack of equitable access to vaccines.

백신에 대한 접근도 부족했죠.

And behind that, and there all the time,

그런 것들 외에도 훨씬 이전부터 늘 기후위기가 있었습니다.

and much earlier, has been the climate crisis.

So how do you want the conference that we're going to see,

그렇다면 앞으로 있을 국제 컨퍼런스인

the African Conference in Egypt in November, COP27,

11월 이집트에서 열릴 아프리카 컨퍼런스, COP27에서

how do you see the priorities?

어떤 것들이 우선되어야 할까요? 기대하고 있는 게 있나요?

What do you want to see happen?

VN: When it comes to loss and damage,

바네사: 손실과 피해로 생각해봤을 때

the climate crisis is pushing so many communities beyond adaptation.

공동체들이 적응하기 힘들 정도로 기후위기가 밀어닥치고 있어요.

When, you know, a family loses a family member,

우리가 가족 구성원을 잃었을 때는 그 빈 자리에 익숙해지겠죠.

you can adapt to a loss of life.

You know, you've talked about the food crisis,

방금 식량위기에 대해서 말씀하셨는데,

for example, in the Horn of Africa

예를 들어 아프리가 북동부에는

that has left more than 20 million people with no access to food.

2천만 명 이상의 사람들이 식량을 얻지 못한 채 살고 있어요.

You can’t adapt to starvation.

굶주림은 적응할 수 없는 것이죠.

You know, when islands are being washed away

아시겠지만, 해수면 상승이나 홍수로 인해

and being submerged by flooding or by the rising sea levels,

섬들이 물에 잠겨 사라져가고 있습니다.

it’s evident that you can’t adapt to lost islands or to sinking coastlines.

섬을 잃거나 해안이 잠기는 것에는 절대 적응할 수 없어요.

So this is where loss and damage comes in.

바로 이때 손해와 피해가 생겨나죠.

MR: One of the things about development is, you know,

메리: 개발에 대해 말해보자면,

industrialized countries built their economies on fossil fuel.

선진국들은 그들의 경제를 화석 연료를 기반으로 이뤘습니다.

And African countries have wanted to go as green as possible,

아프리카 국가들은 최대한 환경친화적으로 이루려고 하는데

but they haven't got the investment and support.

그에 대한 투자나 지원을 받지 못했어요.

And some countries want to go more into the gas they found

어떤 나라들은 찾아낸 가스를 더 사용하려고 하거나

or the coal they've found,

찾아낸 화석 연료를 쓰려고 합니다.

in particular, gas more recently.

특히 요즘은 가스를 더 쓰려고 하고 그리고 파이프라인을 만들죠.

And pipelines.

그에 대해 글을 쓰셨는데

You've written about this.

You feel very strongly about this as a young African climate activist.

젊은 아프리카 기후운동가답게 아주 강하게 표현하셨잖아요.

Tell us more.

더 말씀해 주시겠어요.

VN: Yes, there is a very big challenge

바네사: 네, 현재 아프리카 국가들에게는 중요한 도전 과제가 있습니다.

that so many African nations are facing right now.

There is a pressure to transition to renewable energy.

재생가능 에너지로의 전환에 대한 압박이 있고

There's a pressure to lift people out of energy poverty.

많은 사람들을 에너지 빈곤에서 벗어나게 해야 하는 압박도 있죠.

But then there is no climate finance to do that.

하지만 그렇게 하기 위한 기후 관련 자금은 전혀 없어요.

So what is happening is that fossil fuel companies

그러다 보니 지금 벌어지는 일은

화석 연료 기업들이 협상하러 찾아오는 거예요.

are coming with all these deals for the gas or for the oil

가스나 화석연료를 다른 나라에 팔도록 말이죠.

in the different countries.

MR: Because they're finding it harder in other regions.

메리: 다른 곳에서는 찾기 어렵기 때문이군요.

바네사: 정확해요.

VN: Exactly.

그래서 그 자금이...

But then if the climate finance that is very much needed

이 나라들이 정말로 필요로 하는 자금 지원이 늦어지게 된다면

by these nations is delayed,

they are being pressured to lift their communities

자국의 에너지 빈곤을 없애는 것에 계속 부담을 느끼게 됩니다.

out of energy poverty.

So, you know, that's what makes the climate crisis more than weather.

이런 것들이 날씨보다 더 큰 기후위기를 만들어 내는 것이죠.

So now there is an issue of energy poverty.

현재 에너지 빈곤 문제로 인해

And we know that millions of people across Africa

아프리카 전역 수백만 인구가 전기 없이 살고 있어요.

have no access to electricity.

So that's why the demands of climate finance are very clear.

이 때문에 그 나라들이 기후자금을 필요로 하고 있죠.

We need the money to help communities, those that are on the front lines,

그런 지역들을 돕기 위한 자금이 필요합니다.

기후 위기의 최전선에 있는 사람들을 에너지 위기에서 벗어나도록 도와야 해요.

to help people, to lift people out of energy poverty.

But in a more cleaner way, while transitioning to renewable energy.

하지만 재생 가능 에너지로 전환하며 더 투명한 방식으로 해야겠죠.

메리: 거기에 예외 상황도 있을까요?

MR: Would you make any exception for, you know,

the possibility of clean cooking gas as a temporary, just transition

과도기에 임시로 취사를 위해 청정 가스를 사용한다든가 말이죠.

to help, as one of the solutions,

한 가지 방법으로써 취사를 위해 청정 연료를 쓴다거나

there are other solutions to clean cooking

or getting, you know, electricity into homes.

혹은 집에 전기를 공급할 수도 있고요.

I'm just wondering, I mean,

제가 궁금한 것은...

are you of the view that there's no room at all,

바네사씨는 지금 다른 방법이 전혀 없다고 생각하는 건가요?

because many people feel

개발도상국들이 어느 정도 탄소 배출권을 가져야 한다고 말하는 이들도 있는데요.

the developing countries should have some leeway.

바네사씨가 말씀한 바에 의하면

Because of the very reason you gave,

Africa is such a low emitter internationally

아프리카가 그렇게 국제적으로 적은 양만 배출하고 있지만

and yet has real development needs.

여전히 개발이 필요하죠.

I'm not talking about new infrastructure.

저는 새 인프라에 대한 이야기가 아니라

I'm talking about getting to people who need clean cooking

청정 취사가 필요한 사람들의 에너지 접근성을 말하고 있어요.

or who need electricity in their home.

또는 집안에 전기가 필요한 사람들이요.

VN: Well, I think that when it comes to, you know,

바네사: 제 생각에는 청정 취사나

clean cooking and getting electricity to people,

전기에 대한 접근, 이런 것들을 이뤄낼 때도

still we have to take the renewable way.

재생 가능한 방법을 선택해야 해요.

Unfortunately, gas is unsustainable,

안타깝게도, 가스는 지속가능하지 않고

and it can be very harmful to so many people.

많은 사람들에게 해가 될 수 있어요.

I know that when climate finance is made available,

기후자금의 운용이 가능하게 된다면

a lot of transformation can be made.

더 많은 전환이 이뤄지게 될 거예요.

I run a project that I started in 2019,

제가 2019년도에 시작한 프로젝트는

and it involves the installation of solar panels

우간다 학교들에 태양광 패널과 친환경 취사시설을 설치하는 거였어요.

and eco-friendly cook stoves in schools in Uganda.

I don't have, you know, specific climate finance

이 프로젝트를 위해 구제척인 자금 지원은 없었지만

that is coming in for that project,

but it's been different people that are supporting,

다양한 사람들이 이 프로젝트를 지원해 주었어요.

you know, online through our GoFundMe.

GoFundMe 같은 모금 사이트를 통해서요.

And we've done installations in 31 schools now.

그래서 지금까지 31개의 학교에 설치를 할 수 있었죠.

They have access to electricity through solar.

태양광으로 전기를 얻을 수 있게 되었어요.

You know, they have access to clean cooking

또 친환경 조리 시설로 청정 취사를 할 수 있게 되었죠.

through eco-friendly cook stoves.

So I think the solutions are available.

저는 해결책이 있다고 생각해요.

We just need political will and money to be available.

정치적인 의지와 실현할 자금이 필요할 뿐이죠.

MR: So you would even say, you know,

메리: 그렇다면 바네사씨는

that you wouldn't even have gas as a temporary, just transition solution

전환기의 해결책으로 임시적인 가스 사용도 안된다고 생각하시나요?

예를 들면, 특별히, 청청 취사를 위한

to help women, for example, in particular,

to get more choices of access to clean cooking?

VN: We cannot bring gas.

I believe there are more sustainable ways to help women.

MR: So you you are very firm.

VN: Yes.

MR: I'd love you to talk more

about the Africa that could be there

우리가 더 빨리 행동한다면 아프리카를 살릴 수 있다고 하는데요.

if we move more quickly.

What would it mean?

그것의 진정한 의미는 무엇일까요?

How do you see, for example, in wetlands,

예를 들어 습지대라든지,

how do you see it in terms of what would change in cities?

어떤 변화가 있어야 한다고 생각하시나요?

What would change, I mean, yes, there would be electricity in households,

물론, 가정 내 전기공급 그런 것들도 이뤄져야겠지만

but how else could there be significant difference

어떤 분명한 변화들이 있어야 한다고 생각하시나요?

in jobs as well as in better livelihoods?

더 나은 삶을 위해서 말이죠.

VN: Yeah, I'll start by sharing something I told a friend of mine

바네사: 제가 유럽에 있을 때, 제 친구에게 한 이야기를

while I was in Europe,

들려드리고 싶은데요.

and we were going to take the train from one country to another.

저와 친구는 다른 나라로 가는 기차를 타려고 했어요.

And I told him that if I had lots of money right now,

그때 친구에게 이런 말을 했죠.

만약 내가 돈이 많으면 이 대중교통을 우리나라 우간다로 가져가고 싶다고요.

I would take this public transportation to my country, Uganda, as well.

So I think those are some of the things

바로 이런 것들이

that we could see happen if things start moving.

변화를 통해 얻을 수 있는 것들입니다.

To see that public transportation is made more accessible,

대중 교통에 대한 접근이 더 가능해지고

is made more affordable

그 비용도 저렴해지고,

and also more sustainable for people.

더 지속 가능해지는 것 말이죠.

Because when public transportation is made, you know,

왜냐하면 대중교통이 지속가능하고 더욱 저렴해진다면

sustainable and affordable for people,

it moves things very fast

많은 것들이 빠르게 변화할 수 있기 때문이죠.

because you can easily move from one place to another,

이곳에서 저곳으로 더 쉽게 이동할 수 있으면서도

but in the most sustainable way possible.

가장 지속가능한 방법이니까요.

So I think that when things start moving, actual money,

그래서 실제로 자금이 움직이기 시작한다면,

because here what we are talking about is political will

지금 저희가 이야기하고 있는 것은 정치적 의지에 대한 것과

and making climate finance available.

기후자금을 가능하게 하는 것이니까요.

This is what will enable African nations to build more sustainable cities.

그 자금은 아프리카 국가들이 더 지속가능한 도시들을 만들게 하겠죠.

MR: Yeah, you mentioned the projects that you are working on

메리: 지역 학교에서 진행하고 계신 프로젝트에 대해 말하셨는데요.

in rural schools

to have solar panels and a better cook stove system.

태양광 패널과 더 나은 취사 시설을 설치하는 거요.

What other projects that you know of or that you've seen

또 어떤 다른 프로젝트들을 보거나 알고 계신 게 있나요?

or that you've heard of particularly excite you?

특히 흥미로운 프로젝트들이 있었나요?

VN: So this project is really to educate young people about trees

바네사: 나무에 대해 젊은 사람들을 교육시키는 프로그램이 있는데

and also to grow these trees with them.

같이 나무를 기르기도 헤요.

So what I've seen with her project is that she teaches, you know,

제가 그 프로젝트를 통해서 본 것은

학생들이 단지 나무를 심는 것이 아니라 그 나무를 기르도록 가르친다는 거에요.

the students in schools to not only plant but to also grow the trees.

MR: To nurture them.

메리: : 나무를 돌보는 군요.

VN: Exactly, nurture them.

바네사: 네 맞아요. 돌보는 거죠.

So I think that is something that I find very exciting.

저는 그 점이 아주 흥미로웠어요.

And also here in Uganda, I've seen, you know,

또 여기 우간다에서는

different activists during different tree-planting projects,

나무 심기에 대한 여러 활동이 있어요.

especially fruit trees,

특히 과일나무요.

to help the communities where they're taking these trees

이 나무들을 가지고 지역을 돕는데

to not only have, you know, trees for environmental reasons,

환경적인 이유만 생각하는 것이 아니라,

but also for food because they are fruit trees.

식량에도 도움이 되죠. 과일나무니까요.

MR: And sometimes for health as well.

메리: 그리고 건강도 돕고요.

VN: Exactly, yes.

바네사: 맞아요. 네.

So those are some of the things that I have seen here

이런 것들이 제가 보아온 활동들이에요.

that are very inspiring.

그리고 저에게 영감을 주죠.

I remember being in a conversation at COP26,

COP26에서 담화를 나눈 적이 있는데요.

and it was with some Indigenous leaders.

지역의 토착 리더분들과의 대화에서

And one of the leaders said that usually before they make decisions,

한 분이 말하시길,

이전에는 그분들이 결정을 내릴 때

they always sit in a community and ask themselves,

지역사회 분들이 함께 모여 서로에게 물으셨대요.

will this decision be good for the children?

이것이 아이들을 위해 옳은 결정인지를요.

And if they say no,

만약 반대 의견이 있고

there is a possibility that it could harm the children in this way,

그것이 아이들에게 좋지 않을 가능성이 있다고 하면

then that immediately would disqualify that decision.

그 결정을 바로 무효화한다고 해요.

So I do agree that there is a place of choosing the decisions,

저도 그런 의사결정 방식에 동감해요.

like, making decisions that will ensure that children are protected

아이들과 지구를 보호할 수 있는 방식이니까요.

or the planet is protected.

And also, just to add something, in scripture I've read

또, 덧붙이자면, 제가 읽은 성경구절에서

that says, you know, I've given you a choice of life and death,

생명과 죽음의 선택지를 줄테니

so you choose between life and death.

생명과 죽음 중 고르라는 말씀이 있는데요.

So when I bring it to the climate crisis,

이걸 기후위기로 가져와보면,

we have a choice.

우리는 선택할 수 있어요.

A choice to either walk into a world that is beneficial for all of us

우리 모두에게 이로운 세상으로 들어갈 것인가

or a choice that will take us into the world

아니면 이전에는 몇 사람에게만 해로웠지만

that may harm some people earlier,

결국 모두를 해롭게 할

but in the end it would impact everyone.

그런 세상으로 들어갈 것인지를요.

So I do agree that we must make a choice.

우리 모두가 선택을 해야 해요.

MR: But I like that wisdom

메리: 그 생각이 맘에 드네요.

that you shouldn't take decisions

미래 세대에게 안 좋은 영향을 줄 선택은 하지 않는다는 생각이요.

that may impact wrongly on future generations.

This gets back to oil and gas in Africa.

다시 아프리카의 석유와 가스로 돌아가

You know, it sounds, you know, short term,

아시겠지만, 단기적으로...

but it's not actually short term

정말 단기적인 것은 아니죠,

because putting in that infrastructure will take some years.

왜냐하면 인프라를 갖는다는 것은 몇 년씩 걸리니까요.

그 시기가 되면 우리는 그것이 문제를 일으킨다는 것을 알게 되죠.

And by that time, and then we know it's actually adding to the problem.

Yeah, so it's a kind of very,

그러니까

very good point to think about the future impacts of all actions

모든 것이 미래에 미칠 영향을 생각해보는 것이 중요한데,

and the impact particularly on, as you say, children and grandchildren.

특히 그 영향은 아이들, 또 미래의 아이들에게 가는 것이겠죠.

VN: Yeah, I believe that all life on Earth is sacred,

바네사: 네. 저는 지구의 모든 인류가 두려움에 빠질 거라고 생각해요.

and I believe that there is an intersection,

그리고 또 지구상 모든 생명체 간에 교차점이나 상호작용이 있다고 믿어요.

or interconnection of all life on the planet.

And just to really add on that,

덧붙이자면,

in my tribe, I am a Muganda by tribe,

저는 무간다 부족인데,

we have different clans.

제 부족은 각각 다른 씨족이 있어요.

And I mean, the Njovu clan, njovu means elephant.

은조부 씨족은, 은조부는 코끼리라는 뜻이에요.

So recently I got to learn that you know,

최근에 알게 되었는데

one of the reasons for putting the clans was to preserve wildlife.

씨족으로 나뉘게 된 것은 야생지를 보호하기 위해서였어요.

And what happens with the clans

씨족들이 했던 것은,

it means if I'm in the elephant clan,

제가 만약 코끼리씨족이라면

I can't eat an elephant.

저는 코끼리를 먹을 수 없는 거죠,

I cannot harm or kill an elephant.

코끼리를 해치거나 죽일 수도 없어요.

So it will be the same for another person who is maybe in a lion clan.

이건 다른 씨족도 마찬가지에요. 어떤 사람은 사자 씨족일수도 있죠.

And there are different clans,

또 다른 씨족들도 많아요.

you find that there are different clans of tree species

또 각각의 다른 나무에 관련한 씨족들도 있고

or plant species or animals or marine species.

식물이나 동물, 해양동물 종류도 있죠.

And in that way,

이런 방식은

that was the wisdom to preserve the different animals

다양한 동물을 보호하기 위한 지혜였어요.

and the different plants and the different trees.

또 다른 식물과 나무들도요.

So I do believe that in a way there is a connection between, you know,

그래서 저는 이처럼 지구의 여러 종류의 생명들이

the different kinds of life on this Earth.

연결되어 있다고 믿어요.

MR: And what I wanted to ask you about is the importance, if you think so,

메리: 바네사씨께서는 세대 간의 대화를 중요하게 생각하시는지

of intergenerational conversation.

여쭤보고 싶네요.

VN: So I do believe that we need an intergenerational conversation

바네사: 저는 세대 간의 대화가 꼭 필요하다고 생각해요.

to address the climate crisis,

기후위기를 다루기 위해서요.

because I am not the first climate activist in the whole world.

저는 전 세계 최초의 기후운동가가 아니에요.

And I know that, you know,

또 저의 활동이

the movement is not the first movement in the whole world.

전 세계 최초의 기후운동도 아니고요.

I know that there have been people who have been organizing and mobilizing,

여러 사람들이 단체를 만들고 활동해 온 것을 저도 알고 있어요.

you know, for so many years,

아주 오랫동안

demanding for, you know, climate justice or a better environment for all of us.

기후 정의나 더 나은 환경을 위해 활동한 사람들이 있죠.

I know that you've been doing incredible work as well,

선생님께서도 그동안 정말 대단한 일들을 해오셨잖아요.

you know, for the environment.

환경을 위한 일들이요.

So I believe I have something to learn from you

분명히 선생님으로부터 제가 배울 것이 있다고 생각해요.

and many other people

또 저보다 먼저 이 일을 시작한 분들에게 배울 것이 있죠.

who started this work way before I did.

And I also believe there is a place for them to learn from me as well.

또 그분들도 아마 저에게서 배울 점들이 있을 거예요.

So I think it's a place of bridging the different wisdoms

그래서 다양한 지혜들을 모아야 할 때라고 생각해요.

of the older generation and the younger generation

기성 세대와 젊은 세대 간에 말이죠.

to come up with that one conversation.

한 가지 대화를 해나가기 위해서요.

Because, you know,

왜냐하면,

the fight is not just for the younger generation.

이 싸움이 젊은 세대들로 국한된 것이 아니라

The fight is for everyone.

모두를 위한 싸움이니까요.

MR: So Vanessa, how do you see the increasing climate shocks basically,

메리: 바네사씨는, 증가하고 있는 환경위기들이

and impacts impacting on the rights of people in African countries?

아프리카 국가들의 인권에 대해 어떤 영향을 미치고 있다고 보시나요?

VN: I will first of all mention something I remember in school

바네사: 학교에서 배웠던 것에 대해 먼저 이야기하고 싶어요.

that was taught about rights.

인권에 대한 것인데요.

So being told that people have the right to clean air

사람은 깨끗한 공기를 누릴 권리가 있고

or people have the right to water or to housing,

수자원, 거주지에 대한 권리가 있다고 하죠.

and these are the very things that the climate crisis is destroying.

그런데 이것들이 바로 기후 위기로 망가지고 있는 것들이에요.

When it comes to water sources,

수자원만 보더라도

we know that for so many people, so many communities,

많은 사람들, 많은 지역들이

when they experience dry spells,

가뭄을 겪는다는 것을 알고 있죠.

they have to walk long distances to look for water.

물을 얻기 위해 먼 거리를 걸어야 해요.

And, you know, when it comes to housing,

거주지와 관련해서도

we know that many people have lost their homes

많은 사람들이 살 집을 잃었다는 것도 알고 있어요.

because of flooding, because of landslides.

홍수나 산사태 때문에요.

We've had recent floods in Mbale region here in Uganda.

우간다에도 음발레라는 지역에서 최근 홍수가 있었어요.

And thousands of people were displaced, and their homes were destroyed.

수천 명의 사람들이 난민이 되었고 그들의 집이 파괴되었어요.

So it's really a place of understanding

여기에서 알 수 있는 사실은

that the very rights that we were taught in school, you know,

우리가 학교에서 배웠던 그 권리들이

they are being affected by the climate crisis.

기후위기로부터 영향을 받고 있다는 것이죠.

Many times women are on the front lines of the climate crisis.

대체로 여성들이 기후위기에 가장 먼저 영향을 받아요.

And this is because for many communities,

왜냐하면 많은 지역에서

women have the responsibilities of providing food,

여성들이 가족의 식량과 마실 물을 책임지고 있기 때문이죠.

providing water for their families.

메리: 농사도 그렇죠.

MR: Many are farmers.

바네사: 맞아요. 작물들이 말라가고 있어요.

VN: Exactly. So when, you know, crops are drying

because of, you know, too much heat,

너무 높은 온도때문에요.

it's the women that are on those farms.

여성들이 그곳에서 농사를 짓죠.

When the farms are destroyed or washed away,

농장이 파괴되고 홍수에 쓸려 나가게 되면,

it's the women that are impacted,

여성들이 영향을 받아요.

they are the ones working on those farms.

그 농장에서 일하는 사람이니까요.

When water systems dry out,

물이 다 마르면,

it's women that have to walk very long distances.

여성들이 그 먼 거리를 걸어가야만 해요.

For some communities, it's even worse for, you know, children,

또 어떤 지역에서는 더 심하죠.

아이들이 해야 하니까요. 특히 여자아이들이요.

especially girls, who have to drop out of school.

학교도 그만 둬야 하죠.

Some are forced into early marriages,

어떤 아이들은 조혼을 강요받아요.

because their families can't take them to school anymore.

가족들이 더 이상 아이를 학교에 보낼 수 없기 때문에

And when they get them married off,

그냥 시집을 보내버리고

they expect a bride price

지참금을 챙기려고 해요.

that can help them recover from the climate impacts.

그것으로 기후위기를 통해 받은 피해를 회복하려고 하죠.

So it's really evident

이것이야말로

that the climate crisis disproportionately affects so many girls

기후위기가 많은 여자아이들에게 불균형적으로 영향을 주는 증거예요.

and so many women across Uganda,

우간다와 아프리카, 그리고 전 세계의 많은 여성들에게 말이죠.

across Africa and across the world.

MR: I wonder what kind of message you would give

메리: 혹시 다른 전할 메세지가 있다면

you know, just at the end of this conversation,

마지막으로 말씀해주세요.

a final message of what action everybody can take.

모두가 참여해야 하는 행동들에 대한 것들이요.

And now I'm not talking about Africa.

단지 아프리카뿐 아니라 더 나아가 세계적으로

I'm actually talking more about the world

that needs to move more quickly

예를 들면, 화석연료를 대체하는 것으로 빠르게 옮겨가야 하는 것처럼,

out of fossil fuel, for example.

But what message would you have

이 대화를 듣고 있는 사람들에게

for those who are listening to this conversation?

어떤 메세지를 주고 싶으신가요?

VN: Yeah, I would first of all, say that many times, you know,

바네사: 이미 많이 말했지만, 가장 먼저 말하고 싶은 것은,

the climate crisis seems very complex.

기후위기는 아주 복잡해보이고

And many people want to do something,

많은 사람들이 뭔가 하기를 원하죠.

but they don't know exactly what they can do.

하지만 정말로 무엇을 할수 있는지는 잘 모르고 있어요.

But there are so many things that can be done.

정말 많은 것들을 할 수 있죠.

And you know, we all won't do everything.

우리가 모든 것을 다같이 할 순 없어요.

But it's finding that thing that will transform something.

무언가를 변화시킬 수 있는 그런 것들을 찾는다면,

You know, no one is too small to make a difference

변화를 일으키는 것에는 하찮은 일이라는 것은 없어요.

and no action is too small to transform the world.

세상을 바꾸어나가는 것에는 어떤 행동이라도 소중해요.

It's like we are all one body,

마치 우리가 하나의 몸이고

and every part of that body has different actions.

몸의 모든 부위들이 각자 역할이 있는 것과 같죠.

So it's a place of finding your part and lot in the body and say,

몸의 많은 부분 중에 내가 담당할 부분을 찾는 거예요.

I would do this.

“제가 이걸 맡을게요” 하는 거죠.

That if you are in law,

만약 여러분이 법조계에 있다고 하면,

we did an event about law together --

법률 관련 행사도 있었는데요.

MR: Yes, at COP26.

메리: COP26 총회 말씀이죠.

VN: At COP26.

바네사: 네. COP26 총회요.

So if you are in law,

그래서 법조계에 계신 분들이라면,

you can find your place in what you're doing

여러분이 할 수 있는 일들을 찾을 수 있을 거예요.

that as a lawyer or as a judge,

변호사 혹은 판사로서 다양한 활동들을 지지할 수 있어요.

you're going to support different activists

because you've seen activists take, you know,

많은 활동가들이 기후 문제들로 여러 소송에 관여되어 있으니까요.

different cases to court in regards to climate issues.

That if you're a teacher,

만약 여러분이 선생님이라면

you're going to use your space as a teacher in school

학교에서 선생님으로서 할 수 있는 일들이 있어요.

to teach the students,

학생들을 가르치면서

to tell them not only about what is happening,

지금 일어나고 있는 일들을 단지 알려주기만 하는 게 아니라

but about what they can do.

우리가 뭘 할 수 있을지 알려주는 거죠.

So it's really a place of finding your part in the body

내가 어떤 부분을 담당할지 찾으시면 되요.

and just doing your part,

그리고 그 일을 하시면 되죠.

because in the end,

결국에는,

when we put all the different actions

각각의 다른 분야에서

of the different members of the body,

다양한 활동들을 함께 모은다면

we actually transform the whole world.

결국 우리는 세상을 변화시킬 거예요.

MR: Yeah.
