"Maaaaaan ...

“세상에...

You don't really let paint dry,"

넌 페인트가 마를 틈을 주지 않는구나.”

one of my mentors said to me one day.

언젠가 제 멘토가 해준 말이었어요.

He meant it as a compliment.

칭찬의 표현이었죠.

"Yeah, I guess you're right,"

“네, 제가 봐도 그런 것 같네요.”

I grinned back pseudo-shyly,

전 미소를 띠며 부끄러운 척 했지만

as I took said compliment and placed it on my head

사실 그 칭찬에 속으로는 우쭐했죠.

like a half-cocked crown.

I've always taken pride in being the kind of artist

제가 쉴 틈 없이 작품을 만들어내는 예술가로 성장해가는 거 같아서

that's always making moves.

자부심이 느껴지더라고요.

We were having one of our catch-up sessions, my mentor and I,

2019년 7월에 저는 수업 진도를 따라잡으면서

July 2019,

I, between shooting episodes of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,"

“The Marvelous Mrs.Maisel”을 촬영하기도 하고

and moving into my new apartment uptown in Harlem.

할렘 외곽의 새 아파트로 이사도 했어요.

I'd just returned from Paris.

파리에서 돌아온 지 얼마 안 됐을 때였죠.

I was just going out there to hang.

파리를 즐겨보고 싶었거든요.

You know --

shop a little, take in a couple museums,

가서 쇼핑도 좀 해보고 박물관에도 가보고

sit down at cafés and watch the people go by.

카페에서 사람 구경도 해봤죠.

You know -- très parisien.

말로만 듣던 파리지앵들이잖아요.

Laissez–faire and whatnot.

자유로움이 느껴지더라고요.

Little did I know that my vacation would turn into a work-cation,

그런데 그 휴식의 시간에도 일하게 될 줄 꿈에도 몰랐어요.

and I would be asked to perform with my friend Ray

제 친구 레이와 페스티벌 공연도 하게 됐죠.

as he headlined at the international music festival AFROPUNK.

그가 AFROPUNK 음악 페스티벌의 주연을 맡았거든요.

OK, I might have known a little bit.

인정해요. 좀 쉴만도 하지만...

그래도 쉬지 않고 새 페인트를 부었죠.

But I wasn't going to let that paint dry.

Mm hmm.

(Tapping sounds)

(발 구르는 소리)

Upon my return, Dave Chappelle was making his Broadway debut,

제가 귀국했을 때, 데이브 샤펠이 브로드웨이 데뷔 쇼를 열었어요.

followed by an invite-only impromptu jam session.

아무나 못 들어가는 즉흥 공연 무대였죠.

I had an invite.

전 초대를 받았어요.

I jammed at the session.

무대에서 몇 마디 거들기도 했고요.

Ehhhh!

That's all right.

꽤 괜찮은데요.

A week from then, Tituss Burgess's album will be released,

그리고 그 다음 주엔

제가 참여했던 타이터스 버지스의 앨범이 발매됐을 거예요.

on which I had two features,

and two days prior, "Deadline" would announce

그 이틀 전엔 Deadline지에 이런 기사가 떴죠.

"Broadway's 'Tina' Musical Finds its Ike Turner

“브로드웨이 뮤지컬 ‘Tina’의 차기 아이크 터너(Ike Turner) 역을

in 'The Last O.G.' Co-star Daniel J. Watts."

‘The Last O.G’ 시리즈의 조연 다니엘 J. 왓츠가 맡게 되다.”

Ohhhh, wet paint!

페인트가 마를 틈이 없네요!

And I had not yet started painting like this.

그때는 이런 페인팅 작업을 하기 전이었죠

The week before rehearsals,

리허설 일주일 전에는

my mother and I would travel to Clarksdale, Mississippi.

어머니와 함께 미시시피로 여행을 떠났죠.

Memphis, Tennessee, and Nutbush, Tennessee,

테네시 주 멤피스와 너트부시도 돌아다녔고요.

to see how a younger Ike Turner might have maneuvered through life,

젊은 시절 아이크 터너가 누렸던 삶을 들여다 보고 싶은 마음에서였죠.

then back to NYC to finish shooting "Maisel,"

그리고는 다시 뉴욕으로 돌아와 “Maisel”의 마지막 촬영을 진행했고

then a quick trip to L.A. for an album release concert,

곧장 L.A.로 날아가 앨범 준비를 했죠.

then back to New York City to start "Tina" rehearsal.

그리고 다시 뉴욕으로 돌아와 “Tina” 공연 리허설을 시작했어요.

Four weeks of rehearsal,

리허설을 진행하면서 4주를 보내고

three weeks of tech,

3주 동안은 앨범 작업에 몰두하다가

four more weeks of previews.

시사회를 위해 4주를 보냈더니

And now it's November, and it's opening night.

달력은 뮤지컬이 시작되는 11월을 가리키고 있었죠.

My family, which consists of my mother, my two aunts,

그리고 저희 가족들, 어머니를 비롯해서

고모들과 사촌들

my two cousins and my 91-year-old granny

올해 91세의 저희 할머니까지

fly up to support.

절 응원하러 먼 길을 찾아오셨죠.

They are drenched -- drenched -- in Southern pride

다들 정말 굉장히 좋아해주셨어요.

가문의 자랑이고 영광이라고 생각해주셨죠.

and basking in familial glory

as Tina Turner pretends to give me a light smacking around at the curtain call,

특히 무대 인사에서 티나 터너가 제 어깨를 두드릴 때가 최고였어요.

in front of 1,500 people.

그것도 1,500명 관객 앞에서 말이죠.

(Tapping sounds)

It was awesome.

엄청난 경험이었어요.

Skip over to Thanksgiving, which means it's basically Christmas,

추수감사절을 지나서 바로 크리스마스로 가볼게요.

so you might as well say it's a new year.

그럼 새해가 다가온 거네요.

스포 하나 할게요. 이제부터 정말 정신없습니다.

일들이 빠르게 지나갈 거예요.

But I wasn't about to let that 2020 paint get dry.

2020년에도 페인트 마를 틈이 없었죠.

Yeahhhh.

First off,

시작해볼게요.

performances of my one-man show overlap with my eight shows a week at 'Tina,'

저는 한 주에 8번의 ‘Tina’ 무대와 저의 개인 공연을

fully equipped with no days off

정말 하루도 쉬지 않고 소화했어요.

and a midnight performance on a Friday night,

금요일 밤엔 심야 공연까지 했죠.

the night before a two-show Saturday.

다음 토요일에 2개 공연이 있었는데도요.

Wet paint, wet paint, wet paint!

페인트가 아주 흘러넘치는군요!

Bleeding into February, I'm starting to feel the effects.

어느새 2월이 되자 슬슬 부작용이 일어났어요.

Everything's starting to blend.

모든 게 꼬이기 시작했죠.

I'm only three months into my one-year contract,

아직도 계약이 9개월이나 남아 있었지만

and I'm already feeling like I need a break, I need a vacation.

다 떠나서 쉬고 싶은 마음이 굴뚝같았어요.

Moving into March,

결국 3월로 접어들었을 때에는

and now taking on the role of Ike Turner has started to take its toll,

아이크 터너라는 제 배역에도 영향을 끼치기 시작했죠.

and I can't tell whose trauma is whose.

어디서부터 트라우마가 찾아온 건지

I can't tell whose trauma is hues ...

어떤 부분이 문제였는지 구분이 가질 않았어요.

And there's news of this mysterious illness making its Broadway debut.

그런데 브로드웨이 첫 무대에 서면 누구나 그런 과정을 거친다네요.

Uh, but this paint, though.

음 지금 이 페인트들을...

All cylinders are firing, I'm firing all cylinders

다 써버려야겠어요.

because there's Tony buzz -- got to pack those interviews in! --

토니상 수상 연락이 왔거든요! 얼른 인터뷰를 준비해야 했죠.

which means suits, purple suits, blue suits, green.

뭐가 좋을지 몰라서 옷이란 옷은 다 입어봤어요.

Suits you, it suits me.

이것도 괜찮은 거 같고 저것도 괜찮은 거 같았죠.

And is that a hazmat suit?

방호복도 있길래 한번 입어봤더니

Aquamarine.

바다색인 게 나쁘지 않더라고요.

And as it seems the paint is beginning to dry,

그러다가 잠시 멈춰서 말라가는 페인트들을 지켜봤죠.

I ask myself:

문득 제 자신에게 묻게 되더라고요.

Do I really want all this?

“이 모든 게 내가 원하던 거였나?”

I mean, all of this, the fortune and the fame and the celebrity?

전 이런 부와 명성을 바란 적이 없었던 거 같거든요.

Because Dave Chappelle said to David Letterman

데이브 샤펠이 이런 말을 한 적이 있어요.

that the more you invest into yourself as a celebrity,

유명해지려고 노력을 하면 할수록

the less of yourself you get to own.

자기 스스로를 잃게 될 거라고요.

Hmm.

And I asked myself:

저는 다시 제게 물었어요.

Am I really going anywhere?

내가 지금 어디에 있는 거지?

Like, what's my sense of direction?

대체 어디로 가야 하는 거지?

Because I feel like I'm not going anywhere

제자리 걸음만 하는 것 같았어요.

or like I'm running in place on a hamster wheel

쳇바퀴에 갇힌 햄스터 같았지만

that I don't know how to get off of.

어떻게 벗어나야 할지 모르겠는 거예요.

And it's like I have to ask permission

저를 위한 시간을 갖고 싶어도 누군가의 허락을 받아야 될 거 같았죠.

to do the thing that I know that I need to do for myself,

그렇게 걱정으로 시간을 보내다가...

and then, and then, and then, and then ...

The world finally stops.

모든 게 멈췄죠.

And because everything is in flux,

뭐든 지나가기 마련이니까요.

I am forced to take a much-needed reprieve

저는 제 마음 속에 있는 이 병을

as that mysterious illness has been granted an extension.

받아들여 보려고 했어요.

And though I know the answer is not for a while,

물론 이게 답이 아니라는 걸 저도 알고 있었지만

I kept asking myself:

그래도 저는 계속 되물었어요.

When’s Broadway coming back?

언제쯤 다시 무대에 설 수 있을까?

Because even though I really, really, really need to take this break,

저도 정말, 정말, 정말로 쉬고 싶었지만

I really, really, really, really, really need a check,

자꾸 일정을 확인하게 되고

and I keep checking the status on this mysterious illness

제 한계를 시험해보게 되더라고요.

새로운 페인트가 너무 필요했거든요.

because I need that paint to dry now.

And now everyone's dazed and confused, our greys turned to blues.

그리고 나서는 모든 게 혼란스러웠어요.

I'm off all of the socials,

그래서 전 세상과 거리를 뒀죠.

but I stay glued to the news

그래도 뉴스는 챙겨봤어요.

because I'm watching the paint dry

정말로 제가 아무것도 안 하면

that will not dry fast enough for me to keep going.

다시 일어나기가 쉽지 않을테니까요.

Hmm.

Skip to the summer.

이번엔 여름으로 가볼게요.

Skip to the summer,

저흰 여름으로 가고 있는 거예요.

now the country's on fire.

온 나라에 난리가 났네요.

I'm back on all the socials,

전 다시 세상으로 돌아왔죠.

because my one-man show has been revived and revamped for the virtual space

제 개인 공연도 다시 살아났고

온라인 공연으로 바뀌었죠.

so I can comment on the death of Ahmaud, Breonna and George.

덕분에 아마드 알베리, 브레오나 테일러, 조지 플로이드를 추모할 수도 있었죠.

Broadway still doesn't know when it's going to come back,

그 와중에도 브로드웨이 공연은 열릴 기미가 안 보였고

but now it's in the hot seat for all of its past transgressions.

과거와는 달리 모든 게 침체되어 있었어요.

And I think it might be time for me to take a break from the city.

결국 지금이 휴식을 가질 때라는 결론을 얻었죠.

Three weeks in North Carolina, two weeks in L.A., one week in Portland.

3 주간 노스캐롤라이나를 여행하고

2 주는 L.A.에서, 일주일은 포틀랜드에서 보낸 뒤에

I come back to New York.

뉴욕으로 돌아왔는데

Broadway still doesn't know when it's going to come back.

아직도 공연은 열릴 기미가 보이질 않더군요.

그래서 저는 이 코로나 상황을 어떻게 떨쳐버릴까 고민했어요.

I need something to take my mind off all these pandemics,

그렇게 시작하게 된 게 바로...

and the next thing I know ...

I'm painting with my feet.

발로 페인트를 칠하는 거였죠.

I needed something live and in color

뭔가 생동감 있고 다채로운 게 필요했거든요.

that wasn't "Live and in color!"

그렇다고 엄청 대단한 걸 원한 건 아니었죠.

And now I realize I'm obsessed with diving in colors.

그러다보니 이 색깔들에 빠져 매료되기 시작했어요.

Watching them splatter, swirl and blend

온갖 색들이 흩어져 뒤섞이는 걸 관찰하고

and do all the things people shouldn't be doing right now.

보통 사람들이라면 하지 않을 것들을 시도해봤어요.

And as I'm in the midst of my deep dive,

그렇게 온전히 저에게 집중하게 되었을 때

I realize

그제야 깨달았죠.

I had to learn how to let paint dry.

페인트에게도 마를 시간이 필요하다는 것을요.

I have to stop

하던 일을 내려놓고

and take a break,

잠시 쉬었다 갈 필요가 있다는 걸요.

because if I don't,

그렇지 않으면

my yellows and my blues will make green,

색과 색이 만나 전혀 다른 색을 만들어버리는 것처럼

even if that's not what I really, really want.

원하지 않은 결과가 나타나버릴 수도 있으니까요.

And then I started to think about all the other times

그리고는 지금까지의 저를 돌아보는 시간을 가져봤어요.

페인트가 마를 틈도 주지 않았고

when I wasn't letting paint dry,

when I wasn't taking time away to let things heal,

회복하는 시간도 사치라고 생각했었죠.

like when I was still dancing on two sprained ankles,

발목 인대 손상으로 병원에서는 좀 쉬라고 했는데도

even though the doctor told me I needed to take a break for a while.

전 그 상태에서도 춤을 췄거든요.

Or when I was trying to force closure in a newly broken-up relationship

관계를 대하는 제 모습을 돌아보기도 했어요.

because I didn't want to deal with the healing process.

화해 같은 건 질색이었죠.

Or when I fussed out my reps

호들갑을 떨던 제 모습도 있었어요.

because ... because Netflix haven’t called to offer me a deal

왜냐하면...

제 개인 공연을 마치고 나서 넷플릭스가 계약하자고 할 줄 알았거든요.

a week after my one-man show.

All the times when I didn't want time

쉴 틈 없이 달려왔던 그 모든 시간들이

to take the time it takes

to reveal itself to me.

눈에 들어오기 시작했죠.

All the times when I didn't believe

저에 대한 믿음이 부족해서

that what I had already done was enough

제가 이룬 것에 만족하지 못했고

and that I didn't have to keep going back in with more color.

계속 페인트를 붓기만 했던 시간들이었습니다.

Broadway can't come back.

이제 브로드웨이 공연도 예전 같지 않을 거예요.

It has to come forward.

이제 제가 기회를 만들어야 하죠.

And when it does, it has to be more expressive with the colors that it uses.

그 기회는 분명 다른 어떤 것보다 아름다울 거예요.

And unfortunately, I can't finish this piece for you right now.

아쉽지만 지금 여기에서 이 작품을 완성시키지는 못하겠네요.

Because in order for me to do what I really want to be able to do,

왜냐하면 제가 정말로 원하는 작품을 만들기 위해서는

I have to let this paint dry.

우선 이 페인트들을 말려야 하거든요.

Ohhh, and that's something that I'm ...

아직도 조금은 어색하지만...

I'm still really, really, really

저는 그래도 계속해서

learning to be OK with.

적응해보려고 해요.

But I know it'll be worth the wait.

기다림이 헛되지 않다는 걸 이젠 아니까요.
