5 ENGLISH PHRASAL VERBS YOU MUST KNOW

English phrasal verbs can be tricky, right?

I know.

As an English learner, sometimes you really don't want to study them.

Well, I guarantee today's lesson is going to help you master five English

phrasal verbs that you must know.

Are you ready?

Well then.

I'm Teacher Tiffani, let's jump right in.

All right.

The first phrasal verb is act like.

I want you to repeat after me.

Here we go!

Act like.

Excellent!

One more time after me for pronunciation practice.

Act like.

Excellent!

Now this phrasal verb just means similar to or in the manner of.

So again, act like just means similar to or in the manner of.

Now, let me show you an example sentence that will help you

understand this even more.

Here's the first example sentence using this phrasal verb.

He always acts like he's the boss of everyone when he's not.

Now think about this situation, maybe when you were back in school, maybe

in middle school or even in high school and there was that one student

that always thought he knew the right answer or always thought he knew what

to do and where you guys had to go.

And you guys could have said, "Man, he always acts like he's the teacher

or he always acts like he's the boss."

Make sense, right?

Again, to be similar to or in the manner of a teacher or a boss.

Now what about this example sentence right here.

In the school play, I will be acting like a bad guy, but

really I'm an undercover cop.

Again, act like.

This phrasal verb in the sentence is just saying the individual will be acting

similar to a bad guy but in actuality, the individual is an undercover cop.

Make sense, right?

Again, phrasal verbs can be tricky but as long as you follow the same patterns

and understand them, you will be able to use them like a native English speaker.

So what about this last example sentence for act like.

My mom always asks why I act like a maniac running around the house.

Again, a maniac, someone crazy.

Think about kids, little kids, toddlers when they're running around the

house, screaming and making noise.

Sometimes all of that noise can cause parents to be a little bit stressed.

So a parent could say, "Why are you guys acting like maniacs?"

Your behavior is similar to a crazy person.

You got it, right?

Okay.

So again, act like is the first English phrasal verb that you must know.

So, let's move on to number two.

Number two is act up.

It's so interesting.

Phrasal verbs can be very short but the meaning of each phrasal verb is very deep.

So here we go!

Act up.

Now this just means someone or something is behaving badly.

That's right!

Someone or something is not acting in the right way.

So, for example, you know what, here's an extra story time.

I got another one for you but when I was in South Korea teaching, I had

one class that I will never forget.

I was teaching a group of children.

Now this class, they knew me very well but one day a new student joined the class and

he just happened to be kind of a bad kid.

Now in the beginning, so when he joined my class, he did not know me.

So he came to the class and immediately started talking while I was talking.

He started throwing things around the classroom.

He wasn't listening when I was giving instructions.

He started acting up in my class.

Again, behaving badly.

Now you know me well, that did not last long.

Again, he became one of my favorite students after I helped

him understand that it was not right to act up in my class.

Again.

Great student, started off a little bit bad but he ended up being a great student.

So let's look at an example sentence.

Here we go!

My mom said that if I act up again, I would lose my privileges.

Again.

If a child, if an individual does not follow the rules, acts badly, they will

have certain privileges taken away.

So again, if you act up or behave badly, your privileges will be taken away.

Now what about this second sentence right here.

The man at the concession stand is acting up.

The man at the concession stand where they're selling snacks and different

food items, he's not behaving properly.

He's really behaving badly.

He is really acting up.

You're understanding, right?

I know you're smart.

Here we go!

Let's look at another example, example sentence.

Here we go!I hope my back doesn't start acting up again.

Now this is interesting.

Your back.

Yes!

Sometimes you have back pain.

I actually have experienced back pain that really was not fun and my back

would start acting or behaving badly.

It would start hurting while I was working because of what happened.

So you can actually say that your back is acting up.

It just means your back hurts.

Your back is supposed to support you, right?

Help you as you walk or even when you're sitting down to

give you the support you need.

So when it doesn't, it is acting up.

Make sense, right?

Okay.

Now let's check out the next one.

This one is also very important.

An English phrasal verb that you must know.

Add up.

Again, another short one but another very important one.

Now add up just means to seem reasonable or to make sense and you

know that I say, make sense, right?

All the time.

So you understand what I mean when I say that.

Now add up just means to seem reasonable or to make sense.

So let's check out the first example sentence and see if you

can understand from this example.

After reanalyzing the results, everything is starting to make sense.

Everything is starting to add up.

You understand, right?

There's a connection because in your brain you're already familiar with that phrase

that teacher Tiffani uses all the time.

Make sense, right?

Now we have add up.

So again, after reanalyzing the results, everything is starting to add up.

You got it!

All right, let's go to the next example sentence.

Here we go!

The details of his story we're not adding up.

Again.

The details of his story...

they were not making sense.

They were not adding up.

Again.

Add up just means to seem reasonable, to make sense, to be logical.

I don't think what you're saying adds up.

All right.

Here we go!

Sentence number three.

Nothing is making sense.

Nothing is adding up so I think I need to call our CPA.

Certified Public Accountant.

Just an accountant but this is the abbreviation we use.

All right.

So again, nothing is adding up.

So I think I need to call our CPA.

I can't, I can't break these numbers down.

I don't know how to crunch the numbers.

So again, let's check out another sentence using add up.

Going back to the first one.

After reanalyzing the results, everything is starting to make sense.

Add up.

I understand it better.

You got it, right?

Okay!

Let's go to phrasal verb number four.

Here we go!

Ask out.

Again.

Another short one.

Ask out.

Now ask out just means to invite someone out on a romantic date in

hopes of a future relationship.

Again, these phrasal verbs, you must know them because we native

English speakers use them all the time and I want you to start sounding

like a native English speaker.

So ask out.

When you are interested in someone, when you would like a future relationship with

that person, you ask them out on a date.

So here's the example sentence right here.

I heard that John is planning to ask Susan out.

"What?

Wait a minute, tell me more.

So you're telling me that John actually likes Susan?

(Yes...

John likes Susan girl and John actually wants to take her on a date.

So he asked her out.) You got it, right?

So again for you, you're learning English maybe if you're not married yet.

Maybe as time goes on, you will find someone that kind of catches your eye and

you may want to ask her out on a date.

Yes, exactly!

That's how you can use the phrasal verb.

The second example sentence.

I can't believe he hasn't asked me out yet.

I know he likes me!

Listen!

I know that guy really is interested in me.

He watches me every time I walked by but why hasn't he requested?

Why hasn't he asked me to go on a date?

Why hasn't he asked me out yet?

You got it, right?

Okay.

Here we go!

Last one, sentence three.

Finally!

I was beginning to think he would never ask me out.

Eventually, he finally came around and he asked you on a date.

You got it?

This happened to me when I was in college, there was this guy, he was cute.

He had a really deep voice.

I liked him and I think while I knew he liked me as well but he

just hadn't asked me out yet.

So I was wondering what is taking him so long?

Eventually, he asked me out and we started dating.

So again, this happens all the time.

Ask out.

All right.

Now let's get to the fifth phrasal verb you must know.

Here we go!

Back down.

Back down.

Again.

Another phrasal verb you must understand.

This just means take back a demand or an opinion that

people are strongly opposed to.

No!

We don't like that.

And you decide to take back your opinion or to admit defeat.

Again, back down.

It's so interesting.

Actually, a little while ago, I went to take my sister's puppy

on a little short walk and also to help him go to the bathroom.

To let him go to the bathroom and when we went out for that walk,

you know, he wants to stay outside.

So he kind of was pulling against me.

He was showing me that I want to stay outside and I pulled a little bit

and said, "No, we have to go inside."

Then he decided to back down and just follow me inside.

Again.

He admitted, "I lost, she won."

And followed me inside the house.

Again, back down.

I heard he backed down after losing the election.

He said, "Okay well, I admit my defeat.

I lost the election.

You can have it."

He backed down.

All right, next one.

The contenders backed down from their original pledge.

Backed down.

"Hey!

We admit defeat.

We're taking back our opinion.

We're not gonna move forward."

And finally, Man, this person does not back down.

He is really stubborn!

He constantly pushes his own opinion.

He does not back down.

Make sense, right?

Okay.

Hey!

I said it's story time.

All right.

So today, I'm going to tell you a story about my nephew.

Now my nephew unfortunately passed away several years ago.

He unfortunately got cancer but my family and I, we have so many amazing

memories because he was a great kid.

So I want to tell you one of my favorite memories.

Now, he was a very good kid.

So there was something I used to do all the time with him.

Now, one day we were in the store.

He was about three years old and I had him inside of the cart and I was

pushing the cart at the supermarket.

We were walking through the supermarket and I was, you

know, getting things I needed.

Some bread, some chips, and he asked.

He said, "Auntie Tiff, can I get outside of the back?

Can I get out the basket?"

"Sure!

No problem munchkin."

I called him munchkin.

So I took him out of the basket and he was just kind of walking

alongside me in the cart.

So I was continuing to shop and I was pushing the cart forward and

I noticed that he had stopped.

So I also stopped and I turned around.

Now, remember I said he was a good kid but he was bending over

and I said, his name was Brayden.

I said, "Brayden, what are you doing?"

He said, "TiTi," and he tapped his butt.

He said, "Spank me!"

Now listen, listen.

Exactly how I just said it is how that three year old boy in the middle

of the supermarket yelled out loud.

"Auntie Tiff, spank me!"

I don't know how things are in your country but in America you cannot

hit children in public like that.

You can get in big trouble but remember at the beginning I told you I used

to do something with my nephew.

I do with my nieces as well.

I would spank them during playtime.

Not to hurt them but for some reason it felt to them like a game.

So I would grab them and I'd start tickling them at home and then I'd

start play spanking them not hard at all but they would just laugh and they

start rolling, last week's lesson.

You remember that?

So, he was in the middle of the store and he kept saying, "TiTi, spank me!

Spank me!"

So I said, "Brayden, stop!

Stop!"

And again, in his mind, he was like, "Oh!

Auntie Tiff always plays this game with me and I want her to play it now.

So I told him, "Hey!

We can't do that in the store.

Again.

I was worried about people looking at me.

So, again.

He got back inside of the basket and we finished shopping.

As soon as I got home, I told my parents, told my sister and brother-in-law

and we were all rolling because this three year old boy in the middle

of the store who never acted up.

He did not act up in the store but today, on that day, he said, "Spank me!"

like a child that was acting out.

It was a wonderful day for me, a memory that I will cherish.

I truly loved him.
