It's vs Its | Contraction vs Possessive | Difference in Meaning and Grammar with Examples

Among students, but also, among native speakers.

ネイティブスピーカーの間でも。

It's a difference between 'it's' meaning 'it is'.

「それは」という意味の「it's」の違いです。

And 'its' being the possessive adjective.

そして、「it」は所有形容詞です。

Okay let's and take a few sentences  and I'm sure you'll get it.

それでは、いくつかの文を見てみましょう。きっと

理解できると思います。

So we have 'It's a sunny day'.

それで「晴れた日です」ということになります。

In this case 'it's' is the verb 'to be'.

この場合、「it's」は動詞「to be」です。

So it means 'It is a sunny day'.

つまり「晴れた日です」という意味になります。

If we take the second sentence:

2 番目の文を取ると、

'The dog ate its food'.

「犬は食べ物を食べた」になります。

This is not the verb 'to be'.

これは動詞「to be」ではありません。

It's the possessive adjectives  for an object or an animal.

物や動物を表す

所有形容詞です 。

So the food belongs to the dog. It is its food.

つまり、食べ物は犬のものです。

それはその食べ物です。

Okay so these are two different cases

さて、これらは 2 つの異なるケースです

but sometimes when we write, we confuse the two,

が、文章を書くときに時々

この 2 つを混同してしまい、

and we will write the dog ate it's food with apostrophe s.

犬が餌を食べたとアポストロフィ s を付けて

書きます 。

you know getting confused  between its possessive adjectives

所有形容詞

and it's being the contraction  of the verb 'to be'.

と動詞「to be」の短縮形の間で混同されることはご存知でしょう。

This is a very common mistake.

これは非常によくある間違いです。

if we take for example the sentence:

たとえば、

'Its my pen'.

「それは私のペンです」という文を考えてみます。

Now look at the sentence.

では文を見てください。

What do you think?

どう思いますか？

Is this right? Or is this the wrong spelling?

これは正しいですか？

それともこれはスペルが間違っているのでしょうか？

Well it's wrong.

まあ、それは間違いです。

'It's my pen' is the verb 'to be'.

「それは私のペンです」は動詞「である」です。

Now the best tip that I can give you

混乱した場合に

if you get confused, try and say it with the full form.

私があなたに与えることができる最善のヒントは

、 完全な形で言ってみてください。

Try and say 'It is'.

「そうだ」と言ってみてください。

If it makes sense, then it's the contraction of the verb 'to be'

意味がある場合、

それは動詞「to be」の短縮形であり

and it should be apostrophe 's'.

、アポストロフィ「s」である必要があります。

If it doesn't make sense, then it's probably the possessive adjective.

意味がわからない場合は、

おそらく所有形容詞です。

So for example, I can say, 'It is a sunny day'.

たとえば、「今日は晴れた日です」と言うことができます。

That makes sense.

Can I say the dog ate it is food?

犬が食べたものは食べ物だと言えるでしょうか？

No, I can't. that doesn't make any sense.

Okay if I say, 'It's my pen',

「それは私のペンです」と言ったら

What do you think? Can I say 'It is my pen'?

どう思いますか? 「それは私のペンです」と言えますか?

I can.

できます。

So it's actually the  contraction of the verb 'to be'.

つまり、実際には動詞「to be」の短縮形です。

So it should be 'it' + apostrophe 's' + my pen.

したがって、「it」 + アポストロフィ「s」 + mypen となるはずです。

And just so you know one last thing.

最後にもう一つ知っておいてください。

Be careful because sometimes in some cases

場合によっては、 「it's」

'it's' can also be the contraction of  the verb 'to have' and not 'to be'.

が「to be」ではなく「to have」 動詞の短縮形になる場合もあるので

注意してください。

If we take those two sentences:

この 2 つの文を取り上げると、

It's been great to meet you.

次のようになります。

It means - It has been great to meet you.

それは意味します - あなたに会えてとてもうれしかったです。

'It's got four legs' means it has got four legs.

「It's got four feet」とは、足が4本あるという意味です。

Okay so the verb in those cases is 'to have' so be careful.

このような場合の動詞は「to have」

なので注意してください。
