Sa mga mag-aaral, ngunit din,

sa mga katutubong nagsasalita.

It's a difference between 'it's' meaning 'it is'.

Ito ay isang pagkakaiba sa pagitan ng 'ito' na nangangahulugang 'ito ay'.

And 'its' being the possessive adjective.

At 'nito' ang pagiging possessive na adjective.

Okay let's and take a few sentences  and I'm sure you'll get it.

at sigurado akong makukuha mo ito.

So we have 'It's a sunny day'.

Kaya mayroon kaming 'It's a sunny day'.

In this case 'it's' is the verb 'to be'.

Sa kasong ito, ang 'ito' ay ang pandiwa na 'maging'.

So it means 'It is a sunny day'.

Kaya ang ibig sabihin ay 'Ito ay isang maaraw na araw'.

If we take the second sentence:

Kung kukunin natin ang pangalawang pangungusap:

'The dog ate its food'.

'Kinain ng aso ang pagkain nito'.

This is not the verb 'to be'.

Hindi ito ang pandiwa na 'to be'.

It's the possessive adjectives  for an object or an animal.

Ito ay ang possessive adjectives

para sa isang bagay o isang hayop.

So the food belongs to the dog. It is its food.

Kaya ang pagkain ay pag-aari ng aso.

Ito ang pagkain nito.

Okay so these are two different cases

but sometimes when we write, we confuse the two,

but sometimes when we write,

we confuse the two,

and we will write the dog ate it's food with apostrophe s.

and we will write

the dog ate it's food with apostrophe s.

you know getting confused  between its possessive adjectives

and it's being the contraction  of the verb 'to be'.

at ito ay ang pagiging contraction ng pandiwa na 'to be'.

This is a very common mistake.

Ito ay isang napakakaraniwang pagkakamali.

if we take for example the sentence:

kung kukunin natin halimbawa ang pangungusap:

'Its my pen'.

'Its my pen'.

Now look at the sentence.

Ngayon tingnan ang pangungusap.

What do you think?

Ano sa tingin mo?

Is this right? Or is this the wrong spelling?

tama ba ito?

O ito ba ay maling spelling?

Well it's wrong.

Eh mali naman.

'It's my pen' is the verb 'to be'.

'It's my pen' ay ang pandiwa na 'to be'.

Now the best tip that I can give you

Ngayon ang pinakamahusay na tip na maibibigay ko sa iyo

if you get confused, try and say it with the full form.

kung nalilito ka,

subukan at sabihin ito nang may buong anyo.

Try and say 'It is'.

Subukan at sabihin ang 'Ito ay'.

If it makes sense, then it's the contraction of the verb 'to be'

Kung ito ay may katuturan,

kung gayon ito ay ang pag-urong ng pandiwa na 'to be'

and it should be apostrophe 's'.

at ito ay dapat na apostrophe 's'.

If it doesn't make sense, then it's probably the possessive adjective.

Kung hindi makatwiran,

malamang na ito ay ang pang-uri na may hawak.

So for example, I can say, 'It is a sunny day'.

Kaya halimbawa, masasabi kong, 'Ito ay isang maaraw na araw'.

That makes sense.

Na may katuturan.

Can I say the dog ate it is food?

Masasabi ko bang pagkain ang kinakain ng aso?

No, I can't. that doesn't make any sense.

Hindi, hindi ko kaya. walang kwenta yan.

Okay if I say, 'It's my pen',

Okay kung sasabihin kong, 'It's my pen',

What do you think? Can I say 'It is my pen'?

Ano sa palagay mo? Masasabi ko bang 'Ito ang aking panulat'?

I can.

Kaya ko.

So it's actually the  contraction of the verb 'to be'.

Kaya ito talaga ang pag-urong ng pandiwa na 'to be'.

So it should be 'it' + apostrophe 's' + my pen.

Kaya dapat 'ito' + apostrophe 's' + ang aking panulat.

And just so you know one last thing.

At para lang malaman mo ang isang huling bagay.

Be careful because sometimes in some cases

Mag-ingat dahil minsan sa ilang pagkakataon

'it's' can also be the contraction of  the verb 'to have' and not 'to be'.

ang 'it's' ay maaari ding maging contraction ng verb na 'to have'

at hindi 'to be'.

If we take those two sentences:

Kung kukunin natin ang dalawang pangungusap na iyon:

It's been great to meet you.

Masaya akong makilala ka.

It means - It has been great to meet you.

Ibig sabihin - Napakasaya na makilala ka.

'It's got four legs' means it has got four legs.

'Mayroon itong apat na paa' ibig sabihin mayroon itong apat na paa.

Okay so the verb in those cases is 'to have' so be careful.

Okay kaya ang pandiwa sa mga kasong iyon ay 'to have'

kaya mag-ingat.
