학생들 사이에서 뿐만 아니라 원어민 사이에서도 마찬가지입니다.

It's a difference between 'it's' meaning 'it is'.

'그렇다'는 '그렇다'의 차이입니다 .

And 'its' being the possessive adjective.

그리고 'its'는 소유 형용사입니다.

Okay let's and take a few sentences  and I'm sure you'll get it.

좋아요. 몇 문장만 들어보세요. 확실히 이해하실 겁니다.

So we have 'It's a sunny day'.

그래서 우리는 '맑은 날'이 있습니다.

In this case 'it's' is the verb 'to be'.

이 경우 'it's'는 동사 'to be'입니다.

So it means 'It is a sunny day'.

그래서 '맑은 날이다'라는 뜻입니다.

If we take the second sentence:

두 번째 문장을 보면

'The dog ate its food'.

'개가 음식을 먹었다'입니다.

This is not the verb 'to be'.

이것은 '되다'라는 동사가 아닙니다.

It's the possessive adjectives  for an object or an animal.

사물이나 동물의 소유 형용사입니다.

So the food belongs to the dog. It is its food.

따라서 음식은 개에게 속합니다. 그것은 그것의 음식입니다.

Okay so these are two different cases

자, 이것들은 두 가지 다른 경우

but sometimes when we write, we confuse the two,

이지만 때때로 우리가 글을 쓸 때 우리는 두 가지를 혼동합니다.

and we will write the dog ate it's food with apostrophe s.

그리고 우리는 아포스트로피와 함께 개가 음식을 먹었다고 쓸 것입니다 .

you know getting confused  between its possessive adjectives

and it's being the contraction  of the verb 'to be'.

This is a very common mistake.

if we take for example the sentence:

예를 들어

'Its my pen'.

'It's my pen'이라는 문장을 보자.

Now look at the sentence.

이제 문장을 보세요.

What do you think?

어떻게 생각하나요?

Is this right? Or is this the wrong spelling?

이게 옳은 거니? 아니면 맞춤법이 틀린건가요?

Well it's wrong.

글쎄요.

'It's my pen' is the verb 'to be'.

'It's my pen'은 동사 'to be'입니다. 혼란스러울 경우

Now the best tip that I can give you

제가 드릴 수 있는 최고의 팁은

if you get confused, try and say it with the full form.

전체 형식으로 말해보라는 것입니다.

Try and say 'It is'.

시도하고 '그렇습니다'라고 말하십시오.

If it makes sense, then it's the contraction of the verb 'to be'

말이 된다면 'to be' 동사의 축약형

and it should be apostrophe 's'.

이고 아포스트로피 's'여야 합니다.

If it doesn't make sense, then it's probably the possessive adjective.

이해가 되지 않는다면 아마도 소유 형용사일 것입니다.

So for example, I can say, 'It is a sunny day'.

예를 들어 '날이 맑다'라고 말할 수 있습니다.

That makes sense.

말이 됩니다.

Can I say the dog ate it is food?

개가 먹은 것을 음식이라고 말할 수 있습니까 ?

No, I can't. that doesn't make any sense.

아니, 할 수 없어. 그것은 말이 되지 않습니다.

Okay if I say, 'It's my pen',

그래 내 펜이야' 하면

What do you think? Can I say 'It is my pen'?

어때? '내 펜이다'라고 말할 수 있나요?

I can.

저 할 수 있어요.

So it's actually the  contraction of the verb 'to be'.

따라서 실제로는 동사 'to be'의 축약형입니다.

So it should be 'it' + apostrophe 's' + my pen.

따라서 'it' + 아포스트로피 's' + my pen이어야 합니다.

And just so you know one last thing.

마지막으로 한 가지만 알아두세요.

Be careful because sometimes in some cases

경우에 따라

'it's' can also be the contraction of  the verb 'to have' and not 'to be'.

'it's'는 'to be'가 아닌 'to have' 동사의 축약형일 수도 있으므로 주의하세요.

If we take those two sentences:

이 두 문장을 보면:

It's been great to meet you.

만나서 반가워요.

It means - It has been great to meet you.

즉, 만나서 반가웠습니다.

'It's got four legs' means it has got four legs.

'It's got four legs'는 다리가 4개 있다는 뜻입니다 .

Okay so the verb in those cases is 'to have' so be careful.

알겠습니다. 그런 경우 동사는 '가지다' 이므로 조심하세요.
