Welcome to this English course on adverbs.

क्रिया-विशेषण के इस अंग्रेज़ी पाठ्यक्रम में आपका स्वागत है।

And in this video we're gonna talk about adverbs.

और इस वीडियो में हम क्रिया-विशेषण के बारे में बात करने वाले हैं।

Now the simplest definition of an adverb is that it's a word that describes or modifies a verb.

अब क्रिया-विशेषण की सबसे सरलतम परिभाषा यह है के यह एक ऐसा शब्द है जो कि एक क्रिया को वर्णित अथवा संशोधित करता है।

Now actually adverbs can modify other parts of the sentence like other adverbs.

अब वास्तव में क्रिया-विशेषण वाक्य के अन्य अंगों को, जैसे अन्य क्रिया-विशेषणों को भी संशोधित कर सकते हैं।

But in this video, we will focus on verbs and four kinds of adverbs.

किन्तु इस वीडियो में हम क्रियाओं तथा चार प्रकार के क्रिया-विशेषण पर ही केंद्रित होंगे।

Adverbs of time. Adverbs of place. Of Manner and Adverbs of Degree.

समयवाची। स्थानवाची। रीतिवाचि, एवं परिमाणवाची।

Usually they will answer the following questions about the verbs:

प्रायः यह क्रियाओं पर निम्न प्रश्नों का उत्तर देंगे:

When? Where? How? and To what extent?

कब? कहाँ? कैसे? और किस सीमा तक?

Let's look at these sentences.

आइये इन वाक्यों को देखते हैं।

"The boy ran."

“The boy ran.” ‘लड़का दौड़ा।‘

And then we have, "The boy ran excitedly."

और फिर है हमारे पास, “The boy ran excitedly.” ‘लड़का उत्तेजनापूर्वक दौड़ा।‘

Now this example shows the power of adverbs.

अब यह उदाहरण क्रिया-विशेषण की शक्ति दर्शाता हैं।

In the second sentence you find out how the boy ran.

दूसरे वाक्य में आपको पता चलेगा के लड़का कैसे दौड़ा।

In the first sentence you don't have any information on how the boy ran.

पहले वाक्य में लड़का कैसे दौड़ा, इसके बारे में कोई जानकारी नहीं है।

So in the second sentence, we find out that the boy was very excited.

तो दूसरे वाक्य में हमें पता चलता है के लड़का बहुत उत्तेजित था।

So it's very important to understand adverbs and understand how to use them

अतः क्रिया-विशेषणों को समझना, और उन्हें उपयोग करना आना अत्यंत महत्त्वपूर्ण है

because they will make you speak English a lot better.

क्योंकि इस से आपकी अंग्रेज़ी बोली कहीं श्रेष्ठतर बन जाएगी।

So let's get started.

तो आइए प्रारंभ करते हैं।

First let's talk about the position of an adverb.

सर्वप्रथम, आइये बात करते हैं क्रिया-विशेषण के पद के बारे में।

So where do we put the adverb in the sentence?

अच्छा तो हम क्रिया-विशेषण को एक वाक्य में कहां डालें?

Now that is a bit tricky because the adverb in an English sentence can be in different parts of the sentence.

अब यह थोड़ा कठिन है क्योंकि एक अंग्रेजी वाक्य में क्रिया-विशेषण वाक्य के भिन्न-भिन्न भागों में हो सकता है।

Let's look at a few examples:

कुछ उदाहरणों को देखते हैं:

She climbed the mountain slowly.

She climbed the mountain slowly. वह पर्वत धीमे चढ़ी।

Slowly she climbed the mountain.

Slowly she climbed the mountain. धीमे वह पर्वत चढ़ी।

She slowly climbed the mountain.

She slowly climbed the mountain. वह धीमे पर्वत चढ़ी।

Can you guess which word is the adverb?

क्या आप अनुमान लगा सकते हैं के कौन सा शब्द क्रिया-विशेषण है?

The word 'slowly' is the adverb.

‘Slowly’ शब्द ही क्रिया-विशेषण है।

It describes how she climbed the mountain.

यह वर्णित करना है के वह किस रीति से पर्वत चढ़ी।

And as you can see, the adverb is in three different parts of the sentence but the meaning is exactly the same.

और जैसा के आप देख सकते हैं, क्रिया-विशेषण वाक्य के तीन भागों में आ पा रहे हैं, किन्तु वाक्य का अर्थ ठीक-ठीक वही है।

So let's practice pronunciation.

तो चलिए, उच्चारण का अभ्यास करते हैं।

Repeat after me please.

कृपया मेरे पीछे दोहराएं।

She climbed the mountain slowly.

She climbed the mountain slowly. वह पर्वत धीमे चढ़ी।

Slowly she climbed the mountain.

Slowly she climbed the mountain. धीमे वह पर्वत चढ़ी।

She slowly climbed the mountain.

She slowly climbed the mountain. वह धीमे पर्वत चढ़ी।

Great guys. let's move on.

बहुत बढ़िया दोस्तों। चलिए आगे बढ़ते हैं।

Let's now talk about how to make adverbs.

अब बात करते हैं के क्रिया-विशेषणों को कैसे बनाया जाए।

Now most adverbs, not all of them, but most of them end in -ly.

अब अधिकतर क्रिया-विशेषण, सारे नहीं, पर अधिकतर -ly में समाप्त होते हैं।

So it's actually very easy.

इसीलिए, यह वास्तव में बहुत सरल है।

You take the adjective and you add 'ly' at the end.

आप विशेषण लेंगे और उसमें -ly अंत में जोड़ देंगे।

Let's look at a few examples.

कुछ उदाहरणों को देखते हैं।

If you have the adjective 'nice', and you add 'ly' to it, you make the adverb 'nicely'.

यदि आपके पास है ‘nice’ विशेषण, और आप उसमें जोड़ते हैं ‘ly’ तो आप बना लेते हैं क्रिया-विशेषण ‘nicely’ को।

So for example you could say,

तो उदाहरण के लिए आप कह सकते हैं,

"He is a nice speaker" using the adjective 'nice'.

“He is a nice speaker.” ‘वह एक अच्छा वाचक है।‘

But you could also use the adverb 'nicely' and say,

किन्तु आप nicely' किया-विशेषण का भी प्रयोग कर सकते हैं और कह सकते हैं,

"He speaks nicely."

“He speaks nicely.” ‘वह अच्छे से बोलता है।‘

A second example - If we take the adjective 'quick', and we add 'ly', we can make the adverb 'quickly'.

दूसरा उदाहरण – यदि हम ‘quick’ विशेषण को लेंगे, और उसमें ‘ly’ जोड़ेंगे, तो हमें मिल जाता है क्रिया-विशेषण ‘quickly’।

So we could say,

अतः, हम कह सकते हैं,

"He is a quick runner."

“He is a quick runner.” ‘वह एक त्वरित दौड़ने वाला है।‘

But we could also say,

किन्तु हम यह भी कह सकते हैं,

"He runs quickly."

“He runs quickly.” ‘वह तीव्रता से दौड़ता है।‘

Okay. Let's practice pronunciation.

ठीक है। आइये उच्चारण का अभ्यास करें।

Repeat after me please.

कृपया मेरे पीछे दोहराएं।

"He speaks nicely."

“He speaks nicely.” ‘वह अच्छे से बोलता है।‘

"He runs quickly."

“He runs quickly.” ‘वह तीव्रता से दौड़ता है।‘

Be careful guys.

Not all adverbs end in 'ly'.

सारे क्रिया-विशेषण ‘ly’ में समाप्त नहीं होते।

Some adjectives don't change form when they become adverbs.

कुछ विशेषण क्रिया-विशेषण में परिवर्तित होते समय रूपांतरित नहीं होते।

They're called flat adverbs.

यह मंद क्रिया-विशेषण कहलाते हैं।

Typical flat adverbs would be 'early' or 'late' and a few others.

कुछ ठेठ मंद क्रिया-विशेषण ‘early’, ‘late’ आदि जैसे कुछ अन्य हैं।

And it's very important to know these flat adverbs.

और इन मंद क्रिया-विशेषणों को जानना अत्यंत महत्त्वपूर्ण है।

Because a lot of my students try to add 'ly' to some adjectives

क्योंकि मेरे कई सारे विद्यार्थीगण कुछ विशेषणों में ‘ly’ जोड़ने का प्रयास करते हैं

and unfortunately they make incorrect sentences.

और दुर्भाग्यवश वे त्रुटिपूर्ण वाक्य बनाते हैं।

So let's take a look at an example.

तो आइए एक उदाहरण को देखते हैं।

Okay. If I tell you

ठीक है। यदि मैं आपको कहूँ

"The car drove fastly"

“The car drove fastly”

Do you think that makes sense?

क्या आपको लगता है के इसमें अर्थ है?

Now it does make sense to try to add 'ly' to the adjective 'fast',

अब ऐसा लगेगा के ‘fast’ के साथ ly' जोड़ने में अर्थ बन रहा है,

but unfortunately guys 'fastly' does not exist in English.

किन्तु दुर्भाग्यवश दोस्तों ‘fastly’ जैसा अंग्रेज़ी में कोई शब्द ही नहीं है।

So the correct sentence is,

तो फिर उचित वाक्य है,

"The car drove fast."

“The car drove fast.” ‘गाड़ी तीव्रगति से चली.’

Another example,

एक और उदाहरण,

"He arrived 'late' or 'lately' to class."

“He arrived ‘late’ or ‘lately’ to class.”

What do you think's the correct answer?

क्या लगता है कौन सा उत्तर उचित है?

Again, it makes sense to try to add 'ly' to the adjective 'late',

पुनः, विशेषण ‘late’ के साथ ‘ly’ लगाना सार्थक लगेगा,

but 'lately' is not the adverb of the adjective 'late'.

किन्तु ‘lately’ विशेषण का क्रिया-विशेषण‘late’ नहीं है।

The adverb is 'late'.

क्रिया-विशेषण भी यहाँ ‘late’ ही है।

So the correct sentence is, "He arrived late to class."

अतः उचित वाक्य है, “He arrived late to class.” ‘वह कक्षा विलंबित पहुंचा।‘

Let's practice pronunciation. Please repeat after me.

कृपया मेरे पीछे दोहराएं।

"The car drove fast."

“The car drove fast.” ‘गाड़ी तीव्रगति से चली.’

"He arrived late to class."

“He arrived late to class.” ‘वह कक्षा विलंबित पहुंचा।‘

Let's now take a look at a few sentences to practice finding and making adverbs that modify verbs.

आइए कुछ वाक्यों पर दृष्टि डालते हुए क्रियाओं को संशोधित करने वाले क्रिया-विशेषणों को पहचानने में एवं उन्हें बनाने का अभ्यास करते हैं।

Now remember, adverbs tell us so much about the verb.

अब स्मरण रहे, के क्रिया-विशेषण हमें क्रिया के बारे में बहुत कुछ बतलाते हैं।

Usually they tell us 'when' or 'where' or 'how' or 'to what degree'.

बहुधा वे हमें बतलाते हैं ‘कब’ अथवा ‘कहां’ या ‘कैसे’ या ‘किस सीमा तक’।

So the first example we have is,

तो हमारा पहला उदाहरण है,

"He easily lifted the box."

“He easily lifted the box.” ‘उसने सरलतापूर्वक डिब्बा उठा लिया।‘

Can you spot the adverb in this sentence?

क्या आप इस वाक्य में क्रिया-विशेषण को पहचान सकते हैं?

Of course the adverb is 'easily' - ending in 'ly'.

निस्संदेह यहाँ क्रिया-विशेषण है ‘easily’ – जो की ‘ly’ में समाप्त होता है।

Okay and it tells us how he lifted the box.

अच्छा और यह बताता है के उसने किस रीति से डिब्बा उठाया।

It's an adverb of manner.

यह एक रीतिवाचक क्रिया-विशेषण ह।

Now the second sentence,

अब दूसरा वाक्य,

and this is a bit more difficult,

और यह वाला और भी थोड़ा कठिन है।

"I will download the file tomorrow."

“I will download the file tomorrow.” ‘में कल संग्रह का अधोभारण/को डाउनलोड करूँगा।‘

Now where is the adverb?

किन्तु अब क्रिया-विशेषण कहाँ है?

Because there is no word ending in 'ly', so it's a bit more complicated.

क्योंकि यहाँ कोई शब्द नहीं है जिसकी समाप्ति ‘ly’ से हो, इसीलिए यहाँ थोड़ी अधिक उलझन है।

Well the adverb is 'tomorrow' and it tells you 'when'.

अच्छा, यहाँ क्रिया-विशेषण है ‘tomorrow’ और यह आपको यह बताता है के ‘कब’।

It's an adverb of time.

यह एक समयवाचि क्रिया-विशेषण है।

And these are sometimes a bit more difficult.

और कभी-कभी ये तनिक और कठिन होते हैं।

Our third example now.

Again no words ending in 'ly'.

The adverb is the word 'there'.

इसमें क्रिया-विशेषण है ‘there’ शब्द।

And it tells us 'where'.

और यह हमें बताता है के ‘कहाँ’।

It's an adverb of place.

यह एक स्थानवाची क्रिया-विशेषण है।

And our last example,

और हमारा अंतिम उदाहरण,

"You didn't study enough for the test."

“You didn't study enough for the test.” ‘तुमने परीक्षा के लिए पर्याप्त पढ़ाई नहीं कि।‘

The adverb is the word 'enough'.

इसमें क्रिया-विशेषण है ‘enough’ शब्द।

And it's an adverb of degree.

और यह एक परिमानवाची क्रिया-विशेषण है।

Okay. It tells us to what degree.

यह हमें क्रिया के परिमाण के बारे में बताता है।

Again it's not a word ending in 'ly'.

पुनः यह एक ऐसा शब्द नहीं है जो ‘ly’ में समाप्त हो।

And we will talk about adverbs of degree in our next videos.
