In today’s video, I’m going to tell you about compound nouns.

They are very common in English and there are thousands of them.

Ils sont très courants en anglais et il y en a des milliers.

You need to know about them.

Vous devez les connaître.

Let’s get started.

Commençons.

A compound noun is made up of two different words.

Un nom composé est composé de deux mots différents.

So you take two words, you put them together, to create a new noun.

Alors vous prenez deux mots, vous les mettez ensemble, pour créer un nouveau nom.

They’re usually quite easy to understand.

Ils sont généralement assez faciles à comprendre.

For example, ‘full moon’.

Par exemple, "pleine lune".

‘Full’ is obviously the adjective describing the moon.

"Plein" est évidemment l'adjectif décrivant la lune.

Let’s take a look at other examples, and how to create compound nouns.

Examinons d'autres exemples et comment créer des noms composés.

Sometimes, compound nouns are a single noun.

Parfois, les noms composés sont un seul nom.

Like, ‘toothpaste’.

Comme, "dentifrice".

Sometimes, they’re two or more words hyphenated.

Parfois, ce sont deux ou plusieurs mots séparés par un trait d'union.

Such as ‘mother-in-law’.

Comme "belle-mère".

And sometimes, they’re two separate words, like ‘ice cream’.

Et parfois, ce sont deux mots distincts, comme "crème glacée".

Now, you have to be careful.

Maintenant, il faut être prudent.

Sometimes, you have a simple adjective plus a noun like ‘a green house’.

Parfois, vous avez un simple adjectif plus un nom comme « une maison verte ».

But you also have a compound noun which is a different meaning.

Mais vous avez aussi un nom composé qui a un sens différent.

‘A greenhouse’.

'Une serre'.

Now, ‘a green house’, is a house which is green.

Or, « une maison verte », est une maison qui est verte.

But the compound noun, ‘a greenhouse’, is a place where you grow plants.

Mais le nom composé, "une serre", est un endroit où vous faites pousser des plantes.

Completely different meaning.

Sens complètement différent.

Ok, so you have to be careful.

Ok, donc il faut être prudent.

Stresses can help.

Le stress peut aider.

Usually the stress is on the first syllable in compound nouns.

Habituellement, l'accent est mis sur la première syllabe des noms composés.

Let’s take a closer look now at compound nouns.

Ok, let’s now take a look at the parts of speech that make up a compound noun.

We can have a noun and another noun.

On peut avoir un nom et un autre nom.

Like, ‘bedroom’.

Comme, "chambre".

We can also have a noun and a verb.

On peut aussi avoir un nom et un verbe.

Like, ‘haircut’.

Comme, "coupe de cheveux".

A noun and a preposition.

Un nom et une préposition.

Like, ‘passer-by’.

Comme, "passant".

A verb and a noun.

Un verbe et un nom.

Like, ‘washing machine’.

Comme, "machine à laver".

A verb and a preposition.

Un verbe et une préposition.

Like, ‘drawback’.

Comme, "inconvénient".

A preposition and a noun.

Une préposition et un nom.

Like, ‘underground’.

Comme, "souterrain".

An adjective and a ver.

Un adjectif et un ver.

Like, ‘dry-cleaning’.

Comme, "nettoyage à sec".

An adjective and a noun.

Un adjectif et un nom.

Like, ‘software’.

Comme, "logiciel".

Or a preposition and a verb.

Ou une préposition et un verbe.

Like, ‘input’.

As you can see guys, there are so many ways to create compound nouns with different words.

Comme vous pouvez le voir les gars, il y a tellement de façons de créer des noms composés avec des mots différents.

Now let’s get back to our example for pronunciation.

Now let’s now move on to plural compound nouns.

Passons maintenant aux noms composés au pluriel .

So when we want to make compound nouns plural, there are rules to follow.

Alors quand on veut mettre des noms composés au pluriel, il y a des règles à suivre.

If you have a single word, you simply add an ‘s’.

Si vous avez un seul mot, vous ajoutez simplement un « s ».

But if you have separate words, whether hyphenated or not, you will make the most significant

Mais si vous avez des mots séparés, avec un trait d'union ou non, vous mettrez le mot le plus significatif au

word plural.

pluriel.

Let’s take a look at examples.

Jetons un coup d'œil à des exemples.

‘Newspaper’ will simply be ‘newspapers’.

"Journal" sera simplement "journaux".

So I have man newspapers.

J'ai donc des journaux d'hommes.

Swimming pool.

Piscine.

Now, what’s the most significant word?

Maintenant, quel est le mot le plus significatif ?

Well, it is ‘pool’.

Eh bien, c'est "piscine".

So we will say, ‘there are two swimming pools’.

Alors on va dire « il y a deux piscines ».

You cannot say, ‘there are two swimmings pools.’

Vous ne pouvez pas dire "il y a deux piscines".

No ‘s’ at swimming.

Pas de "s" à la natation.

Brother-in-law What’s the most significant word?

Beau-frère Quel est le mot le plus significatif ?

Well of course, it is ‘brother’.

Bien sûr, c'est "frère".

So you will say, “I have two brothers-in-law”.

Alors vous direz : « J'ai deux beaux-frères ».

And finally, ‘woman doctor’.

Et enfin, "femme médecin".

Now, what’s the most significant word?

Maintenant, quel est le mot le plus significatif ?

Actually, both words are significant.

En fait, les deux mots sont significatifs.

So we will both make them plural.

Nous allons donc tous les deux les mettre au pluriel.

Remember, the plural form of ‘woman’ is ‘women’.

N'oubliez pas que la forme plurielle de "femme" est "femmes".

So we will say, “Four women doctors work at the hospital”.

Alors on va dire : « Quatre femmes médecins travaillent à l'hôpital ».

Let’s work on pronunciation.

Travaillons la prononciation.

I have man newspapers.

There are two swimming pools.

And finally, Four women doctors work at the hospital.

Et enfin, Quatre femmes médecins travaillent à l'hôpital.

Four women doctors work at the hospital.

Quatre femmes médecins travaillent à l'hôpital.

To practice, I have a few sentences.

And I want you to tell me if we are using compound nouns or not.

I want to drink some cold water.

Je veux boire de l'eau froide.

Is ‘cold water’ a compound noun?

Est-ce que « eau froide » est un nom composé ?

What do you think?

Qu'est-ce que tu penses?

It isn’t.

Ce n'est pas le cas.

‘Cold’ is a simply adjective describing the water.

"Froid" est un simple adjectif décrivant l'eau.

She has a new boy friend.

Elle a un nouveau petit ami.

Is boy friend a compound noun?

Est-ce que petit ami est un nom composé ?

Well, it isn’t in this case.

Eh bien, ce n'est pas dans ce cas.

He’s your friend and he’s a boy.

C'est ton ami et c'est un garçon.

But the compound noun, ‘boyfriend’, in one word, exists and has a different meaning.

Mais le nom composé, "petit ami", en un mot, existe et a une signification différente.

Then, your boyfriend is more than a friend.

Ensuite, votre petit ami est plus qu'un ami.

He’s the boy you’re having a relationship with.

C'est le garçon avec qui tu as une relation.

Other example.

Autre exemple.

The blue bird was singing in the tree.

L'oiseau bleu chantait dans l'arbre.

Is ‘blue bird’ a compound noun?

Est-ce que « oiseau bleu » est un nom composé ?

Not in this case.

Pas dans ce cas.

It’s a simple bird and it’s blue.

C'est un oiseau simple et il est bleu.

But, the compound noun, ‘bluebird’, in one word, exists.

Mais, le nom composé, 'bluebird', en un mot, existe.

It’s a specific bird.

C'est un oiseau particulier.

Let’s meet at the bus stop.

Rendez-vous à l'arrêt de bus.

Is ‘bus stop’ a compound noun?

Est-ce que « arrêt de bus » est un nom composé ?

It is.

Il est.

I have two alarms clock.

J'ai deux réveils.

What about ‘alarms clock’?

Qu'en est-il du "réveil" ?

Well, it is a compound noun, but there is a big mistake.

Eh bien, c'est un nom composé, mais il y a une grosse erreur.

Can you see it?

Peux-tu le voir?

Of course, the plural form.

Bien sûr, la forme plurielle.

The plural form is not ‘alarms clock’.

La forme plurielle n'est pas "réveil".

But, ‘alarm clocks’.

Because the most significant word is ‘clock’.
