Learn English Contractions using OF | Grammar and Pronunciation

In today's video, I’m going  to be telling you about some

Now, it's important to remember that these  types of contractions are just for conversation.

You don't want to use them in writing. So pay close attention.

And if you memorize how to say these  contractions, you’re gonna start sounding

Let’s take a look.

Alright, let’s take a look at my list of  common contractions including the word ‘of’. 

Muy bien, echemos un vistazo a mi lista de contracciones comunes, incluida la palabra "de".

Now, in this list, instead of saying  ‘of’,

Ahora, en esta lista, en lugar de decir 'of',

we're going to use the ‘schwa’ sound, the kind of ‘uh’ sound  to make these contractions. 

usaremos el sonido 'schwa', el tipo de sonido 'uh' para hacer estas contracciones.

I have six examples. I’ll say each of them twice. 

Tengo seis ejemplos. Diré cada uno de ellos dos veces.

The first time, I’ll say it slowly.

La primera vez lo diré despacio.

The second time, I’ll say it at  a normal speed like a native speaker.

La segunda vez lo diré a velocidad normal como un hablante nativo.

It's really important that you repeat after me out loud each time.

Es muy importante que repitas conmigo en voz alta cada vez.

Okay, first one. ‘kind of’ = ‘kinda’ 

Bien, el primero. 'kind of' = 'kinda'

‘She's kinda cute.’ ‘She's kinda cute.’

Next. ‘sort of’ = ‘sorta’ ‘I’m sorta tired’ 

Próximo. 'más o menos' = 'más o menos' 'Estoy más o menos cansado'

‘I’m sorta tired’ 

'Estoy más o menos cansado'

‘out of’ = ‘outta’ ‘I’m outta money.’ 

'sin' = 'sin' 'Me he quedado sin dinero.'

‘I’m outta money.’ ‘a lot of’ = ‘alotta’ 

"Me he quedado sin dinero". 'mucho' = 'alotta'

‘They ate alotta cake.’ ‘They ate alotta cake.’ 

'Comieron mucho pastel.' "Comieron mucho pastel".

‘lots of’ = ‘lotsa’ ‘He has lotsa money.’ 

'muchos' = 'mucho' 'Tiene mucho dinero'.

‘He has lotsa money.’ 

"Tiene mucho dinero".

Last one. ‘cup of’ = ‘cuppa’ 

El último. 'taza de' = 'cuppa'

‘Would you like a cuppa coffee?’ ‘Would you like a cuppa coffee?’ 

'¿Quieres una taza de café?' '¿Quieres una taza de café?'

Did you guys hear that schwa that ‘uh’ sound?

¿Oyeron ese schwa, ese sonido de 'uh'?

All right, let's take a look at a few dialogues.

And really pay close attention to these because I promise if you do it's going to  help you master these contractions.

Yes, these ones. “Buy me a cuppa coffee.”

“Sorry. I’m outta money.” 

"Lo siento. Me he quedado sin dinero”.

Conversation 2. Which of these can be made into contractions? 

Conversación 2. ¿Cuáles de estas se pueden convertir en contracciones?

Yes, these ones. “It's getting kinda hot.” 

Sí, estos. "Se está poniendo un poco caliente".

“Yes, we need to drink alotta water.” 

"Sí, necesitamos beber mucha agua".

Conversation 3. Which of these can be made into contractions? 

Conversación 3. ¿Cuáles de estas se pueden convertir en contracciones?

Yes, these ones. “I’m sorta tired.” 

Sí, estos. "Estoy un poco cansado."

“Go home and get lotsa rest.” 

"Vete a casa y descansa mucho".
