Hey, how are you?

00:01
Not Much.
1
1960
1680
00:03
That answer doesn’t actually make sense.  ‘Not much’ is a great answer to the question,
2
3640
5520
00:09
‘what’s up?’ but not to ‘how are you?’
3
9160
3280
00:12
Today we’re going to go over 6 different  ways to answer ‘how are you?’ A typical
4
12440
5480
00:17
conversation starter and greeting  in American English. We’ll go over
5
17920
4080
00:22
a range of answers to reflect that life  is going well for you, or terribly.

00:39
The first thing you need to know  about the question “How are you?”
9
39200
3920
00:43
is that sometimes it’s just a  greeting. It’s like saying hi,
10
43120
4400
00:47
and the person is not actually  wanting to know how you are doing.
11
47520
3720
00:51
If you run into a friend on the street and  they say, How are you? They want to know.
12
51240
4960
00:56
They want you to answer. But if you’re  starting a meeting at work for example,
13
56200
4480
01:00
and someone says “how are you?” they probably  don’t want to start a conversation about how
14
60680
5280
01:05
you are unless the meeting is not happening for  several minutes. They are just using it as a
15
65960
5560
01:11
greeting. And the answer you want to give in these  situations is “Good, how are you?” They will then
16
71520
6320
01:17
say “Good” or “fine” and the greeting is over.  Then you move on to other things, for example:
17
77840
6560
01:24
Hey Rachel, how are you?
18
84400
1560
01:25
Good, how are you?
19
85960
1360
01:27
Good. Did you get the updated  agenda for the meeting?
20
87320
2880
01:30
Yep, got it. I’m ready to go.
21
90200
2160
01:32
So that is an example of ‘how are  you’ being used as a greeting. Let’s
22
92360
4880
01:37
say you’re at work and someone  says How are you? Like this:
23
97240
4600
01:41
Hey Rachel, how are you?
24
101840
2600
01:44
In this case, the person looks like they’re in a  hurry, this is a greeting. This person does not
25
104440
5440
01:49
want to actually have a conversation about  how you are. But let’s say you’re at work,
26
109880
5040
01:54
and it’s a more casual situation, like, you’re  passing someone in the hallway that you spend
27
114920
5400
02:00
quite a bit of time with, and that person doesn’t  look like they’re rushing. Then it’s appropriate
28
120320
4920
02:05
to assume it’s not just a greeting, they actually  want to know how you are. For example:
29
125240
5680
02:10
Hey Rachel, how are you?
30
130920
2240
02:13
Great, it is such a relief to be heading into  the weekend with the Johnson project done!
31
133160
7280
02:20
Heading into is a phrasal verb that  means going into something. For example,
32
140440
5560
02:26
“I was heading into the kitchen when I saw a  mouse run across the floor.” But we also use
33
146000
5720
02:31
it for time, when we’re at the beginning  of a chunk of time like heading into the
34
151720
4640
02:36
weekend or I could say “I’m heading into  the summer with no vacation plans.”
35
156360
6040
02:42
Yeah, totally. You put in so  much overtime for that.
36
162400
3640
02:46
I did. That was a tight deadline.
37
166040
3320
02:49
A deadline is the date at which you  have to have something done. A tight
38
169360
5400
02:54
deadline is one where you’re not sure if you have
39
174760
2880
02:57
enough time to complete the task.  Tight deadlines are stressful!
40
177640
7160
03:04
Let’s recap. If it’s just a greeting and someone
41
184800
3280
03:08
says “How are you?” Then just  answer: Good, how are you?
42
188080
3920
03:12
If it’s more of a conversation starter,  then you can answer how you’re doing. The
43
192000
5120
03:17
most neutral quick answers are ‘good’  and ‘fine’. But maybe you want to say
44
197120
6080
03:23
more about how you’re doing. Things are going  well for you. Then you can say ‘great’. And say
45
203200
6840
03:30
a bit about why you’re doing so well.  Let’s see that conversation again.
46
210040
4680
03:34
Hey Rachel, how are you?
47
214720
2240
03:36
Great, it is such a relief to be heading into  the weekend with the Johnson project done!
48
216960
6720
03:43
Yeah, totally. You put in so  much overtime for that.
49
223680
3680
03:47
I did. That was a tight deadline.
50
227360
2880
03:50
So, how are you? Put your answer in  the video comments right now.
51
230240
5440
03:55
Let’s look at the range of answers  you can give to ‘how are you?’:
52
235680
4000
04:00
Great – things are going very well  for you, you’re in a good mood.
53
240280
5200
04:05
Good or Fine – neutral, you’re having a  regular kind of day. You’ll probably follow
54
245480
6040
04:11
this up with something positive, but you’re  a little less enthusiastic about it than if
55
251520
6120
04:17
you said ‘great’. Let’s look at a sample  conversation where the answer is ‘good’
56
257640
6920
04:24
Oh hey! How are you?
57
264560
2160
04:26
Good! We just got back from  visiting my parents in Florida.
58
266720
4200
04:30
Oh, Where in Florida?
59
270920
2040
04:32
My parents are in Gainesville, which  is where I grew up. So I still have a
60
272960
3520
04:36
bunch of childhood friends there and it’s  just great to see them and catch up.
61
276480
4920
04:41
Catch up is a phrasal verb, it has lots  of meanings. But here it means to find out
62
281400
5000
04:46
what’s been going on in someone’s  life since you’ve last seen them.
63
286400
4760
04:51
Oh, that’s really nice. And Florida. Talk  about a nice place to visit in February!
64
291160
6480
04:57
No doubt!
65
297640

70
321480
6040
05:27
So we’ve got great. We’ve got ‘good’ or ‘fine’.  Another neutral way to answer without giving much
71
327520
7920
05:35
information is something like I’m doing alright.  And remember, if you don’t feel like sharing
72
335440
5960
05:41
anything you can always just ask the question  back without saying anything more. For example:
73
341400
6720
05:48
Hey! How are you?
74
348120
1440
05:49
I’m doing okay, just gearing up  for the holidays. How are you?
75
349560
4680
05:54
How are you? The word r, it reduces.  Think of it as just an er ending on
76
354240
6240
06:00
the end of the word how. How  are, how are, how are you?
77
360480
4280
06:04
How are you?
78
364760
920
06:05
We’re good. Keeping busy – Brian is  in soccer and John is the coach.
79
365680
5640
06:11
Oh fun! Does he enjoy coaching?
80
371320
2880
06:14
It’s a bunch of 7-year-olds, so sometimes  I think he feels like he’s herding cats,
81
374200
5960
06:20
but overall I think he’s enjoying it.
82
380160
3320
06:23
Herding cats. This is not the same as hurting  cats even though it’s pronounced the same.
83
383480
6000
06:29
Herding cats. This is an idiom that means  trying to organize or manage people or groups
84
389480
5960
06:35
of people that are very difficult to organize  or manage, like a bunch of 7-year-olds.
85
395440
6760
06:42
Herding cats. Yes! That makes sense.
86
402200
4080
06:46
What about when things aren’t going well?  You could respond with “only okay”.
87
406280
5840
06:52
Hey. How are you?
88
412120
1680
06:53
Only okay. John has been traveling  a lot for work a lot this month,
89
413800
4600
06:58
and honestly I think we’re all just  a little run down because of it.
90
418400
5120
07:03
Run down is a phrasal verb  that means low on energy,
91
423520
3880
07:07
starting to feel exhausted, and maybe  even getting a little bit sick.
92
427400
5760
07:13
Sorry to hear that. You know what? I’m  baking bread today. Why I don’t I bring
93
433160
4800
07:17
it over with a pot of soup? That way you  don’t need to worry about dinner.
94
437960
4520
07:22
Oh, you don’t need to do that.
95
442480
2360
07:24
It’s no extra work for me. I’m already making for dinner and I
96
444840
3960
07:28
know I’ll have extra. Let me do this  for you. I’ll stop by around 5.
97
448800
6160
07:34
Wow, okay, thanks! That would be great!
98
454960
3560
07:38
Or, even worse than ‘only okay’,  we have ‘not very good.
99
458520
5560
07:44
Hey, how are you?
100
464080
1120
07:45
Hi. Honestly, not very good.  Last week I was laid off.
101
465200
5560
07:50
We use the word fired when someone is let  go from their job for poor performance
102
470760
5160
07:55
or for doing something wrong. But we  usually use ‘laid off’ when it wasn’t
103
475920
5160
08:01
the person’s fault but the company was  downsizing or something like that.
104
481080
5080
08:06
Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry to hear that.
105
486160
4000
08:10
Yeah, it’s a huge bummer, my  whole team was let go.
106
490160
4520
08:14
Oh no.
107
494680
1760
08:16
So. Not doing great today.
108
496440
3360
08:19
That’s hard. I’m really sorry.
109
499800
2680
08:22
Thanks. I’m just taking a  few days just to lay low,
110
502480
2800
08:25
and then I’ll start looking  for work next week.
111
505280
3000
08:28
Good luck.
112
508280
1443
08:29
What if life is just terrible? You’re in a  really bad mood, life seems really hard?
113
509723
6437
08:36
Hey, how are you?
114
516160
2360
08:38
I’m doing terribly. Our contractor is ghosting us  and the kitchen is sitting there unfinished.
115
518520
7040
08:45
If someone is ghosting you, this means  they’ve stopped communicating with you.
116
525560
3920
08:49
They’re not replying to any of your  messages but they never told you that
117
529480
4560
08:54
they were going to stop communicating  with you. They’ve just ghosted you.
118
534040
5360
08:59
Oh gosh.
119
539400
2080
09:01
And, a client at work doesn’t like any of  the creative that I’ve sent over, so I have
120
541480
4640
09:06
to start over for that. It’s back to the drawing  board after two weeks of working full-tilt.
121
546120
7320
09:13
Back to the drawing board means she’s saving  nothing from what’s she’s already done to
122
553440
4680
09:18
work on this project, she has to start over  from the beginning with totally new ideas.
123
558120
6080
09:24
If you’re working full tilt on something,
124
564200
2600
09:26
that means you’re putting in every bit of  energy you have on that one thing. All of
125
566800
5680
09:32
your focus is going to get that done  because you’re working full tilt.
126
572480
5680
09:38
I can’t believe they didn’t  like it. I thought it was so
127
578160
2640
09:40
fresh and new. Can you reuse any of the ideas?
128
580800
4680
09:45
No. they want a completely different  direction, so I am starting from scratch
129
585480
5840
09:51
Just like back to the drawing board,  starting from scratch means you’re
130
591320
4320
09:55
not using any of your previous ideas or  work, you’re completely starting over.
131
595640
6480
10:02
I’m sorry.
132
602120
1680
10:03
Thanks. I just really need a vacation.
133
603800
3480
10:07
The question ‘how are you?” is  actually asking for an adverb,
134
607280
4720
10:12
because it’s short for ‘how are you doing?’.  If you’re answering how you’re doing,
135
612000
4920
10:16
you’re describing DOING, a verb, so that’s  an adverb. How are you doing? Terribly. But
136
616920
7160
10:24
you can change it to an adjective  by describing yourself, a noun,
137
624080
4200
10:28
by starting with I am or I’m,. I’m terrible. I’m  doing terribly, or more simply, I’m terrible.
138
628280
9160
10:37
Now, we’ve gone over great, good or fine,
139
637440
3760
10:41
doing alright, only okay, not  very good, and terribly.
140
641200
6840
10:48
You can use any adjective or adverb to describe  yourself: I’m doing well. I’m fantastic! I’m
141
648040
6840
10:54
over the moon, my daughter just had a baby! Or,  I’m struggling, I’m horrible. I’m bummed.
142
654880
9440
11:04
Over time, as you notice the phrase ‘how  are you’ and the responses in conversation,
143
664320
6240
11:10
movies, and TV, you’ll start to build  your awareness: Is this person actually
144
670560
5760
11:16
starting a conversation about how I  am, or is this just a greeting?
145
676320
5040
11:21
Let’s review our 6 conversations,  how to respond to How are you?
146
681360
5080
11:26
Hey Rachel, how are you?
147
686440
2160
11:28
Great.
148
688600
1130
11:29
Hey, how are you?
149
689730

11:31
Only okay.

I’m doing terribly.

Hey. How are you?
163
725920

12:07
Only okay. John has been traveling  a lot for work a lot this month,
164
727640
4560
12:12
and honestly I think we’re all just  a little run down because of it.

know I’ll have extra. Let me do this  for you. I’ll stop by around 5.

Wow, okay, thanks! That would be great!
