In this lesson you'll learn the difference between two commonly confused prepositions,

which are "to" and "at".

"to" et "at".

So, the thing to remember is that "to" always suggests movement or direction.

Alors, il faut se souvenir que "to" suggère toujours un mouvement ou une direction.

"To" with movement, you're going to someone, to someplace, or towards something.

"To" indique un mouvement vers une personne, un lieu, un objet.

So, "to" is movement or direction, and "at" suggests a location in place or time.

Donc, "to" indique un mouvement ou une direction, et "at" un emplacement ou un instant.

So, "to" something, but "at" somewhere.

Donc, "to" quelque chose, mais "at" quelque part.

"To" something, "at" somewhere.

"To", there's movement.

All right, here are some other common verbs.

Super, voici quelques autres verbes très communs en Anglais.

There are lots and lots of verbs that we can use with this preposition "to", which implies movement.

Ils y a beaucoup de verbes que l'on peut employer avec cette préposition "to", laquelle applique cette notion de mouvement.

These are some examples.

Quelques exemples.

You go to someplace, you go to school.

"Tu va quelque part, à l'école,

You go to the university.

à l'université,

You go to work.

You run to something.

You fly to London.

"Tu prends l'avion pour Londres."

You return to somewhere.

"Tu retournes quelque part."

Or you can also use lots of verbs with "to" plus a person.

You explain something to someone, send a letter to someone, read it to someone, write to someone,

Tu explique quelque chose à quelqu'un, tu lit quelque chose à quelqu'un, tu écris à quelqu'un,

or speak to someone.

There's a direction.

Il y a une direction.

Right?

Whether you're speaking, or writing, or walking, or running

C'est bon ?

Quand tu parles, écris, marche, cours,

- "to" is always movement and direction.

"to" témoigne toujours d'une direction et d'un mouvement.

Good.

Bien.

Now, "at" is steady.

Au contraire, "at" est posé.

Whereas "to" is moving, "at" is very steady.

Au moment où "to" est mouvant, "at" est très calme.

"At" stays in one place, "at" is location, location and place, location and time.

"At" reste à un endroit précis, c'est un emplacement précis, un moment précis.

For example: "We arrived"-where?-"at the airport."

We drove to the airport, and then we arrived at the airport.

But here are some examples.

We stayed at the hotel, for example.

I eat at this restaurant.

I shop at the mall.

Okay?

O.K. ?

So, "at" plus place or sometimes "at" plus time.

Call me at 5:00.

Let's meet at noon.

So we have "at", location.

Arrival, and "to" is always movement or direction.

In all of these cases you have to choose between "to" and "at".

What do we say?

The direction of your speech is towards Jack.

Next: "She went _______ the bank."

"to the bank" or "at the bank"?

"She went", so "went" is movement.

Right?

Think of the verb.

The verb is talking about movement.

Next: "I bought this keychain _______ the gift shop."

"to the gift shop" or "at the gift shop"?

So here the answer would be

What do we say?

"Meet me

"Rencontre-moi

at", right?

Because it's a place.

"to 4:00", "at 4:00"?

Which one is right?

Lequel ?

"The movie starts

"Le film commence

at", okay?

à".

We always use "at" for very specific times.

On utilise toujours "at" pour des moments très spécifiques.

Next: "We flew _______ Amsterdam."

What do we say?

"We flew..."

Flew, movement.

Nous volions du verbe voler, un mouvement.

Right?

Flying is movement.

"to Amsterdam", very good.

"I sent a card _______ my Mom."

Sending, is it movement?

Envoyer, est-ce un mouvement ?

Yes.

Oui.

Sending implies movement, so for movement we have to say:

"I sent a card to my Mom."

"She read a story _______ her son."

When you're reading, the activity is directed towards someone, so:

"She read a story

And the last one: "John studied _______ the library."

So, where was he?

Was he in one place or was he moving?

He was in one place, one location.

So we can say: "John studied

at the library."
