DON'T say 'GOODBYE' in English! | Learn THESE to sound like a NATIVE

Okay, so this is an advanced English lesson.

And in this advanced English lesson, we're looking at other ways to say goodbye.

What's this?

You find it in your kitchen, it's called a microwave Ha, that microwave.

So we're looking at ways to say goodbye.

And in total, I've got 16 different ways in which you can say goodbye.

So I'll give you the situation when you can use it.

This is only just to give you a little bit of variety and variation.

So you don't have to say goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye.

Little bit boring.

But there are certain situations when you might want to use something a little longer,

something a little shorter, something a little different.

Okay.

Okay.

And at the end, as always, I'll give you my address, if you wish to contact me if you

need some further clarification or information.

Okay, so let's get started 16 ways of saying goodbye.

I bet you didn't think there were so many.

Okay, so here we go.

Number one.

I'm off now.

Okay.

So you're ready for work.

You've got the kids in the car, your wife is doing something or your partner's doing

something.

And you just shout a general.

I'm off now.

Okay.

So I'm off notice means I'm gone.

Or I'm going or I'm just going out the door.

I'm off now.

And then she might reply, or he might reply.

See you or see ya.

Yeah.

So see you is more formal, more British English.

See ya, that is a little bit American.

Yes.

See ya see you.

But it means exactly the same.

So I'm off now.

Okay.

See you.

See ya.

See you tomorrow.

See you later, whatever it might be, she might put a particular time reference on it.

See you in a little while.

See in an hour.

See you later.

See you tonight.

See you when I see you.

Yeah.

Because then you might be just using see you and I see you.

Because you're not quite sure.

When you'd be home, you're not quite sure when the meetings will finish and not quite

sure when both of you would be in the house at the same time.

So see you, see you when I see you, see you later, whatever it might be.

Okay.

Now, the Americans have an expression and you come across it in a lot of movies.

And I'm not so sure they use it themselves, but you certainly hear it in movies.

Later, dude.

Later, dude.

Yeah, later, dude, meaning See you later.

Yeah, dude, meaning a person.

So later, dude.

That's another way of expressing it.

So if you hear an American saying it of your own holidays, you know what it means later,

dude.

So see you later whenever I catch up with you.

Okay.

And nice, polite way of saying goodbye is.

Take care.

Okay, so somebody's leaving your your parents, your sister, your brother, colleagues, whoever

it might be just Oh, yeah.

Okay, take care.

And so it's just a general statement to say yeah, Mind yourself busy roads, busy streets,

or it's just a general take care covers all sorts of ways.

Yeah.

Um, so you could be on the telephone to somebody.

And at the end of the conversation, they say goodbye, say, Okay, take care, and so on.

And then maybe something added like with catch up again, or see you soon would ever that

might be.

And that gets us on to our next way of saying goodbye, which is catch up soon, or catch

up later, man.

So catch up, meaning we'll get together.

So again, that telephone conversation that mobile phone conversation, okay, look, that's

all I can do for you for now.

Or I have to run again, another meeting, catch up later, or catch up soon, or let's catch

up later, or let's catch up soon.

And then you disconnect the phone.

So no need to say goodbye.

Because the words themselves mean exactly that.

So catch up soon.

Catch up later.

Back later.

Yeah, yeah, I'll be back later.

So this is another way to say goodbye.

Yeah.

I'm, I'm off.

I'm going to the office.

I'm going to work.

I'm going to university.

I'm going into the city.

I'm going to the supermarket back later now.

Meaning I will be back later.

Yeah.

So back later, just a shortened version of that.

Or back in a while.

Yeah.

Okay.

So you'll be back in a while.

It could be 20 minutes could be at the end of your lunch hour.

It could be at any time later but you do intend to To return so you're leaving for lunch from

the office and your pass your colleague in the corridor and the elevator.

Yeah, back in a while, I'll be back in a while.

Yep.

Meaning, when I've done whatever I have to do the jobs you've gone to do the personal

business you have to attend to or just simply grabbing that cup of coffee, grabbing the

sandwich, bowl of soup, whatever it is, back in a while, back later.

Now, if we're not quite sure, when we're going to see our friends again, it could be you

know, you're sitting around the coffee table, people drifting in, drifting out in the coffee

shop, gang of you getting together, college mates, classmates, old friends, members of

the football club, the tennis club, so you're just lots of people coming and going.

And yeah, you're not quite sure when you want to connect again.

So you might just say something like, see you sometime, yeah.

So there's nothing definite nothing planned, but somebody will organise it.

And then you will be included in whatever the the roundup of all the emails.

So it's an it's a good way just to say to people, yes, see you sometime.

So that might be sometime soon.

See you sometime.

see you sometime soon.

Could be next week, next month, whenever Okay, so there's no firm date, no firm arrangement,

no firm follow up to be done.

Okay, so just see us sometime.

Yeah, see you soon.

Yeah, actually, we're meeting on Sunday with the girls, yeah.

Or I Yeah, look, we've got a club meeting next week.

So you're probably going to be there.

I'll be there.

So see you soon.

So it doesn't have to be a very specific date.

But it's sometime in the near future when you'll both be back or three or four of you

will be back together again on a nother separate occasion.

So see you soon.

Now there's a one I used to use with my my kids and I still use it now with my grandkids.

See you later alligator.

And then the reply will be in a while crocodile.

Yeah, so I used to teach them that see you later alligator.

In a while crocodile.

So it's a little bit funny, a bit of a joke, but it's a good way to get the kids involved.

See you later alligator, in a while crocodile.

So so you can try to just, see you later alligator.

And that's it or in a while crocodile will be the response that you will expect.

So try it with your kids or with your grandkids.

And another one a little bit funny is See you soon and the reply is not if I see you

first.

Yeah.

So see you soon, not if I see you first.

So it's a little bit of a funny way of saying goodbye and the response that you would expect

to get.

A very simple way of saying goodbye is just cheers.

Now, usually we use cheers when we're having a drink with somebody and we raise our glasses

and we toast each other cheers.

Yeah.

But choose is often used as a form of farewell greeting.

Okay, cheers.

Until next time, we can write it on the end of a letter.

Cheers.

We can say it on the mobile, cheers.

Or just say it to our friends.

We get up leaving the coffee table.

Cheers.

See you soon.

Yep, see you sometime.

See you around.

What all of these different ways of saying goodbye.

See you soon.

Yeah.

Cheers.

See you sometime.

Yeah.

Yep.

Cheers, yeah.

So it's all about the different ways in which you can say goodbye.

Or they can say goodbye to you.

Another real Irish way of saying goodbye is don't be a stranger.

They mean drop in when you have a chance.

So don't be afraid to drop in or don't be shy about dropping in.

If you're driving past just call it as they say the door is always open.

And literally, it means that so if you're driving past or driving around, they'd actually

be quite insulted.

If you didn't call in to see them if you if you knew people in the area.

So the expression their use is don't be a stranger.

Meaning don't wait for an invitation.

Don't drive past without saying hello, we'd expect you to call in and say hello.

Okay, so don't be a stranger.

Now, here's one I really don't use.

And when I checked it out, some people use it but to me it sounds like a throwback to

the hippie days of the 1970s.

Peace or peace out.

And it's a bit of a slang word.

I mean, I would be embarrassed to use it to be honest.

Yeah.

I don't know who I know that I'm going to say piece when when I'm leaving or when they're

leaving, unless they thought it was a little bit of an idiot.

Okay, but it certainly sounds to me like one of those retro expressions from the 1970s.

I must ask my sister because she was a hippie of the 1970s and into all these strange things,

and I was a little bit young for that.

So I'll ask her, did they use it?

And do they still use it today?

So, peace or goodbye.

Another wait is just I'm outta here.

Okay, so it's a funny way to say goodbye, say, Oh, look at the time.

I'm outta here.

I've got a meeting in 50 minutes or I've got to pick up the kids.

Or I'm meeting my wife in town.

I'm outta here.

So I have to go see you later.

Okay, so it's a bit of slang.

I'm outta here.

Meaning that's the sort of slang version of it.

And you'll see it on the screen.

Or if you want to put it in its proper pronunciation.

I'm out of here.

Yeah.

So yeah, run it together.

I'm out of here.

Yeah.

So I'm out of here mean, I have to go I'm under a bit of pressure.

I can't wait any longer the traffic is going to be bad.

And I'd be in terrible trouble with my better half if I'm late.

So I'm out of here.

So goodbye.

So just one word we can use later.

Okay, so it means See you later.

Catch up later, whatever.

It's just later.

Okay.

So get up, leave the coffee on the table, the bottle of beer, whatever it is, and off

you go later.

Okay.

And everybody shouts their own ways.

Yeah.

Good luck or catch up soon or Yes.

See you around or whenever.

Yeah, okay.

So there's all different ways in which you can practice saying goodbye to your friends,

your colleagues, your mates, your family, your kids, whoever it happens to be.

Let me go through them.

One by one again, just in case you got a little bit confused with all of those.

So as I said, 16 and talk.

I'm off now.

See you or see it.

Number three later, dude.

Real American later, dude.

Number four, take care.

Very British.

Number five.

Catch up soon or catch up later.

Number six, back later.

Number seven, back in a while.

Number eight.

see you sometime.

Number nine.

See you soon.

Number 10.

See you later alligator in a wild crocodile.

Number 11.

See you soon not if I see you first.

Number 12.

Cheers.

Don't be a stranger.

This slang of the 70s hippies.

Very strange.
